De bosbranden in Australië zullen hun weerslag op de hele wereld hebben

De klimaatverandering en zaken als luchtvervuiling 'trekken zich' niets aan van grenzen, zo schopt Tracey Keeling terecht een open deur in, met een artikel op The Canary. Niet moeilijk te bedenken dat de bosbranden in Australië* sinds september vorig jaar een enorme bak CO2 extra hebben toegevoegd aan de atmosfeer en dat dit de klimaatverandering verder aanjaagt...

Bovendien zullen de gebieden in Australië die door de brand grotendeels ontbost zijn meer zon opnemen, waar bomen de opname van warmte nog tegen konden houden, zoals je begrijpt zullen deze gebieden extra warmte opnemen en zal de warmteontwikkeling zorgen dat de temperatuur op aarde nog verder op zal lopen..... Daarnaast zullen deze gebieden hoogstwaarschijnlijk extra wind genereren, de oorzaak van het moeilijk onder controle krijgen van deze branden.....

Ondanks alle klimaattoppen, die zelf al een aanjager zijn van de klimaatverandering, stijgt de uitstoot van CO2 nog steeds, jaar op jaar wordt er meer CO2 uitgestoten, je behoeft dan ook geen professor te zijn om te concluderen dat met het grote aantal bosbranden dit jaar weer een fikse stijging te zien zal zijn van de CO2 uitstoot.....

Jammer dat Keeling niet schrijft over het feit dat de rook van deze bosbranden over de hele wereld trekt, zo liet men een dag of tien geleden al weten dat de rook zich inderdaad verspreidt over de hele aarde..... Als dit nog een paar maanden doorgaat en bedenk dat het bepaald niet Australië alleen is dat deels in brand staat (Australië waar de zomer nog maar net een maand gaande is), wordt de kans steeds groter dat we misoogsten over de hele wereld zullen gaan zien......

The terrifying fallout from the Australian fires that is about to hit the whole world

When it comes to the climate, our obsession with national borders is immaterial. The world has watched in horror as Australia has burned over the last five months. But the fires aren’t solely affecting those in their immediate and devastating path or, indeed, those choking on the smoke from them in near (or far) countries.

As the UK’s Met Office has recently pointed out, one terrifying fallout from the fires is coming to all of us this year. Because, on this shared planet, we really are all in this together.

A grim forecast

Australian wildfires will help push up carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere to new highs in 2020, the Met Office has said. It predicts 2020 will see one of the highest annual increases in CO2 levels since records began more than 60 years ago.

This year, levels of CO2 are set to rise by around 2.7 parts per million (ppm) compared to 2019, peaking at 417ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere in May. 2019 itself also saw a steep rise in CO2 by 3.5ppm in May compared to the previous year, with the overall level rising to 414.8ppm that month. May is generally the month of the year where CO2 levels reach their yearly peak; September/October is usually the lowest annual point.

The predicted average CO2 level for 2020 is 414ppm. Pre-industrial levels of CO2 were around 280ppm. Levels are set to remain above 410ppm throughout the year for the first time, according to the Met Office

The increasing levels of greenhouses gases like CO2 in our atmosphere push up the temperature of the planet. As NASA explained in a 2010 study:

carbon dioxide is responsible for 80 percent of the radiative forcing that sustains the Earth’s greenhouse [warming] effect.

Actions have consequences

Detailing the cause of the CO2 increase, the Met Office said:

While human-caused emissions cause the CO2 rise in concentration, impacts of weather patterns on global ecosystems are predicted to increase the rise by 10% this year.  Emissions from the recent Australian bushfires contribute up to one-fifth of this increase.

As the Met Office noted, human activities such as burning fossil fuels have been pushing up levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere every year. But around a tenth of the projected increase in 2020 is due to the impact of weather patterns. According to analysis in 2019 by Carbon Brief:

68% of all extreme weather events studied to date were made more likely or more severe by human-caused climate change. Heatwaves account for 43% such events, droughts make up 17% and heavy rainfall or floods account for 16%.

These weather patterns create conditions in which plants grow less and absorb less CO2. Weather patterns linked to swings in temperatures in the Pacific Ocean also affect the rise in carbon dioxide levels, because in years with a warmer tropical Pacific many regions become warmer and drier.

This will make blazes such as Australia’s devastating bush fires more likely.
As Professor Richard Betts, of the University of Exeter and the Met Office Hadley Centre, explained:

Although the series of annual levels of carbon dioxide have always seen a year-on-year increase since 1958, driven by fossil fuel burning and deforestation, the rate of rise isn’t perfectly even because there are fluctuations in the response of ecosystem carbon sinks, especially tropical forests.

Essentially, ecosystems have limited some of the potential temperature rise on our earth, by absorbing the CO2 we’ve put into the atmosphere. But human-induced warming and atmospheric disruption drive weather patterns that are damaging those ecosystems. That leaves nature in much less of a position to help us.

A downward spiral

In short, we’re heading nowhere good – and we’re hurtling towards that destination fast. Scientists say we must not exceed CO2 levels of 450ppm, which would set us on course for global warming of 2°C. Indeed, many argue we should not go beyond a temperature rise of 1.5°C. That is if we want to avoid catastrophe.

We’ve now seen a dramatic increase in CO2 levels for eight years running. The average temperature increase in 2019 reached 1.1°C. Yet we’re still destroying forests and gobbling up fossil fuels. We’re literally sprinting towards the apocalypse with open arms.

Corbyn als schietschijf voor het Britse leger, reactie Tories: Corbyn is een groot gevaar voor Brittannië......

Terecht grote ophef dat het Britse leger Labourleider Corbyns portret gebruikt als schietschijf...... E.e.a. geeft ten overvloede nog eens aan dat het (Britse) beroepsleger vooral (extreem-) rechts georiënteerd is..... 'Britse' tussen haakjes daar hetzelfde geldt voor het overgrote deel van de legers van andere westerse landen, inclusief het Nederlandse.......

Uitermate schandalig is de reactie van de 'conservatieven' op deze belachelijke gang van zaken in het Britse leger (de Tory Party, of de conservatieven zoals ze vaak worden aangeduid, is sinds de tijd dat hare gitzwarte kwaadaardigheid Thatcher premier was van deze partij en daarbij Groot-Brittannië verrampeneerde*, een neoliberale partij en dat van de ergste soort....) 

In niet verholen uitspraken gedaan na de openbaring over de schietoefeningen van het Britse leger, stellen leden van de zogenaamde conservatieve partij dat Corbyn een gevaar is voor Groot-Brittannië, waarmee ze in feite het leger gelijk geven, sterker nog met die uitlatingen is zelfs het leven van Corbyn in gevaar gebracht, immers er zijn meer dan voldoende rechtse gekken die de beschikking over wapens hebben en die Corbyn, na dergelijke uitspraken van de regeringspartij, wel om willen leggen...... 

Hier wat men letterlijk durfde te zeggen over Corbyn: "The Labour leader is a Marxist, terrorist-loving Russian stooge who’s determined to ruin Britain", ofwel: Corbyn is een Marxistische terreur-lievende stroman van Rusland die vastbesloten is om GB te ruïneren...... Een uiterst smerige (en belachelijke) aantijging, ook May heeft aan deze oproep tot geweld tegen Corbyn meegedaan...... May voegde zelfs nog een leugen toe bij het demoniseren van Corbyn......

Moet je nagaan: tegelijk is er een grote discussie ontstaan over de gang van zaken rond de Brexit, waarbij de conservatieven terecht worden afgemaakt over de lamlendige gang van zaken..... Bij BBC Scotland radio was op het moment dat ik dit bericht in klad opstelde, op 4 april 2019**, een inbelprogramma bezig (rond 10.33 u.), waar de uitermate vervelende presentator Kaye Adams, het opnam voor de arme conservatieven en de zo geplaagde May die zo haar best heeft gedaan en doet voor de Brexit...... Ofwel ook in deze discussie nam de BBC het op voor de regering May, een regering die als haar premier verantwoordelijk is voor een onnoemelijk aantal oorlogsmisdaden.......

De BBC, de zogenaamde onafhankelijke zendgemachtigde, is tevens één van de mediaorganen die Corbyn volkomen ten onrechte beschuldigen van antisemitisme........

A video emerged on 3 April that appeared to show soldiers using Jeremy Corbyn’s face for target practice. Given the very real or threatened violence faced by MPs, the discovery is chilling.

The Conservatives’ response to it, however, was also deeply disturbing. Because since the video appeared, the party’s politicians have variously insinuated – or claimed outright – that the Labour leader is a Marxist, terrorist-loving Russian stooge who’s determined to ruin Britain. Even the prime minister has joined in the attacks.

Most of the accusations are part of the pushback against a bigger role for Corbyn in Brexit. But it’s beyond irresponsible to promote that sort of narrative in the current climate overall, let alone after a video of soldiers allegedly ‘taking down’ the leader of the opposition emerges.

PMQs

On 2 April, Theresa May announced that she would enter talks with Corbyn over the Brexit impasse. Seemingly in reference to this, Conservative MP David Jones asked her a question at PMQs on 3 April:

“Does it remain the position of the PM that the leader of the opposition is not fit to govern?”

In response, May said:

“I do not think that the Labour Party should be in government… The right honourable gentleman, the leader of the opposition, and I have different opinions on a number of issues. If I may just highlight one issue… when we suffered a chemical weapons attack on the streets of Salisbury in this country, it was me as prime minister, this government, that stood up against the perpetrators of that attack. The right honourable gentleman said he preferred to believe Vladimir Putin than our own security agencies. That is not the place of somebody who could be prime minister.”

In reality, Corbyn did nothing of the sort. When former Russian and UK spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by a chemical weapon in Salisbury in 2018, the Labour leader said the UK should hold the perpetrators to account “on the basis of the evidence”. He also called for “firm multilateral action” to ensure such a crime never happens again.

Nonetheless, May should have thought better than to spread this blatant falsehood on the day the ‘target practice’ video appeared. Especially when media outlets are linking the footage to Corbyn’s “security credentials”:

Of course, none of these accusations are new. The establishment class has long tried to use Corbyn’s positions on defence and the economy as a stick to beat him with – despite substantial public support for those positions.

But for high profile officials to repeat these smears on the day that a video emerges appearing to show government employees, i.e. soldiers, practising blowing the Labour leader’s head off, is beyond irresponsible. In fact, it shows that it’s the Conservatives who are fundamentally ‘not fit to govern’.

In het hieronder door Tracy Keeling geschreven artikel, eerder verschenen op The Canary, vertelt ze over Tom Bower, een bekende anti-Corbyn fantast, die een boek schreef over Corbyn, genaamd 'Corbyn's Ruthless Plot For Power'. Colomnist Peter Oborne van The Daily Mail schreef een artikel op Middle East Eye over dit boek, waarin hij o.a. stelt dat het boek diverse onwaarheden bevat, verder dat Bower systematisch belangrijke feiten weglaat en op catastrofale manier de standaard mist voor politieke berichtgeving........

Oborne stelt voorts dat hij Bowen meermaals heeft gevraagd te reageren op zijn kritiek, alvorens tot publicatie over te gaan, maar dat hij geen antwoord kreeg van Bowen......

Mensen je gelooft je ogen niet als je leest hoe belachelijk Bowen zijn beweringen doet, zoals die over een extreme speech, die in de 80er jaren werd geschreven, maar sindsdien door elke Labour leider werd genegeerd, behalve door Corbyn..... Oborne nam contact op met de schrijver van de speech, Richard Heller en deze bevestigde dat geen Labour-leider contact met hem had opgenomen over deze speech, inclusief Jeremy Corbyn........

Echt smerig zijn uiteraard de aantijgingen dat Corbyn een antisemiet is, waar een paar Britse mediaorganen hem zelfs al uitmaken voor fascist......*

De reguliere westerse media en het grootste deel van de westerse politiek zijn als de dood dat Corbyn de volgende verkiezingen wint en dan een radicaal ander (socialistisch) politiek beleid zal voeren, een beleid voor de burgers en niet voor oorlogsvoering en het welzijn van de rijke bevolking en de grote bedrijven en banken.... Alleen daarom beschuldigt men Corbyn van antisemitisme!

Bovendien zijn dit soort beschuldigingen door politici en de zogenaamde onafhankelijke massamedia, een trap na voor de slachtoffers van de holocaust*, daar men hun dood misbruikt voor het belasteren van mensen, die niets hebben met antisemitisme, maar wel met de vervolging van het Palestijnse volk door de nu officieel fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël..... Nogmaals: verzet tegen de uiterst bloedige onderdrukking van Palestijnen heeft niets, maar dan ook helemaal niets met antisemitisme te maken!!

An anti-Corbyn author appears to have gone into hiding after a journalist exposed his book as an utter sham.

Writing in Middle East Eye on 9 March, Peter Oborne dismantled Tom Bower’s Dangerous Hero: Corbyn’s Ruthless Plot For Power. The Daily Mail columnist says the book “contains numerous falsehoods”, “systematically omits relevant facts” and “catastrophically” fails to meet the standards for political reporting.

Oborne also says that, prior to publishing, he made numerous attempts to contact Bower “in order to give him the chance to defend himself”. But his efforts via email, text and phone were to no avail.

Here are a few examples of Oborne’s research into the book’s claims about Jeremy Corbyn. They may help explain why Bower isn’t eagerly stepping up to face the music.

The “extreme” speech

In his book, Bower asserts that Corbyn adopted a speech written by freelance speechwriter Richard Heller for the 2015 party conference. Bower said Heller wrote the speech in the 1980s and that it:

had been repeatedly offered to every Labour leader since Michael Foot, and always rejected as too extreme

Oborne contacted Heller about this claim. He confirmed that he did offer the speech to previous Labour leaders. But, contrary to Bower’s assertion about its rejection, Heller toldOborne:

None of the previous leaders replied to me at all.

So, no Labour leader appears to have branded the speech “extreme”. It’s Bower that does so – and conveniently gives his readers the idea that Corbyn leans towards the “extreme” in the process.

“The enemy of the [Jewish] working class”

Trying to suggest that Corbyn is antisemitic, Bower also writes:

For Corbyn, Jews were automatically assumed to be rich capitalist financiers and bankers backed by Wall Street, and were all undoubted swindlers. They were not victims of racism, but the enemy of the working class.

As Oborne argues, Bower ignores the fact that Corbyn has “a long record of opposing anti-semitism” in his book. But he even disproves his own propaganda on this supposed prejudice. Bower asserts that Corbyn:

conjured a tale of a brave personal fight against exploitative Jewish employers of sweatshop labour. Parochialism and fantasy fed the original source of his anti-Semitism – namely, as he saw it, the malign collective power of Jews. Corbyn was immersed in an unfamiliar world. The union was dealing with struggling, overworked, self-employed Jews

So, he highlights the Labour leader’s time as a trade union official ‘railing’ against largely Jewish employers in the garment industry as an example of antisemitism. But, as Oborne notes, in the next sentence Bower admits that Corbyn was fighting for Jewish workers.

Bower’s own bias

Meanwhile, Bower’s book reveals a lot about his own prejudices and his capacity for hypocrisy. As Oborne explains:

Bower’s concern with anti-semitism is clear. However, he talks of other minority groups with a language which he would be unlikely to tolerate if used about Jews.

One such passage, about Corbyn’s constituents in the 1990s, reads:

By 1998, new arrivals from Somalia, Pakistan and Bangladesh had packed into Islington North. Queues of migrants and asylum seekers at the Red Rose sought Corbyn’s help to obtain homes, welfare benefits, character references for bail, help to reduce their sentences after criminal convictions, and intercession to avoid deportation.

Bower is suggesting that these “new arrivals” to Islington are scroungers and criminals. But, as immigration lawyer Colin Yeo told Oborne:

The casual conflation of immigration with crime is extremely unfortunate. I seriously doubt there was much call for his assistance with bail, benefits, character references or criminal appeals, more like help with family members and refugee claims.

Clearly, Bower’s offensive description of these immigrants speaks much more about him than it does about them.

“Ugly hatchet job”

Through these examples, and many more, Oborne proves that Bower’s book is nothing more than an “ugly hatchet job”. But it’s one which has received rave reviews from the mainstream press. For Oborne, this begs a question:

Are British journalists allowing hostility to Corbyn to get in the way of telling the truth?

The incessant smears against Corbyn – including in Oborne’s Daily Mail – since he put himself up for Labour leader in 2015 provide the answer to that. This “ugly hatchet job” of a book is just the nail in the British media’s reputational coffin. Yes, if UK journalists still feel under any obligation to tell the truth (it’s clearly not a high priority), that completely goes out of the window with Corbyn.
