Het Braziliaanse Amazonewoud staat alweer in brand

Vorig jaar maakten de branden in het Amazonewoud nogal wat los, zelfs de neoliberale hufter en leugenaar premier Rutte stelde geschokt te zijn...... Terwijl hij ook toen wist dat hij zelf hoofdverantwoordelijk is voor het subsidiëren van oliemaatschappijen en steenkoolboeren met het belachelijk hoge bedrag van 8,3 miljard op jaarbasis, geld door ons opgebracht, een investering in het naar de gallemiezen helpen van ons aller thuis, de aarde....... 

Verder is het zeker dat Rutte beseft dat Nederland op wereldniveau de nummer 2 importeur is van de soja die daar wordt geteeld, soja voor onze belachelijke grote veestapel van 500 miljoen dieren die hier jaarlijks worden groot en doodgemarteld...... En dan durft men Rutte 3 het meest groene kabinet ooit te noemen..... (80% van de wereldsojaproductie gaat naar diervoer...)

Het 'vuurseizoen' is nog niet begonnen in het Amazonewoud en nu al staan er enorme delen van dat woud in brand, overigens was e.e.a. al eerder bekend gemaakt op 21 augstus jl. besteedde ik hier an een bericht aan.....* De vrees is dan ook dat dit jaar nog meer van het Amazonewoud in rook op zal gaan dan eerder gezien, dit ales gepromoot door de fascistische Braziliaanse president Bolsonaro....... 

Uiteraard sterven door deze bosbranden ongelofelijk grote hoeveelheden diersoorten en wordt het leefgebied van de oorspronkelijke volkeren sterk teruggebracht, waar deze mensen zelfs worden vermoord door de zogenaamde kolonisten die gebieden 'willen ontwikkelen' door deze in brand te steken.....

Bossen die in rook opgaan voor o.a.: -onze intensieve martelveehouderij (soja, eiwitrijk voedsel voor het vee van dierenbeuilen die zich boer durven te noemen....),  -intensieve veeteelt in dat woud (afgepaste percelen die bomvol runderen staan....) en -palmolie, een ronduit slecht vet voor de volksgezondheid dat in ongelofelijk veel voedsel en zelfs snoep wordt verwerkt (zo is Unilever een grootgebruiker van palmolie), maar ook wordt gebruikt als 'duurzaam onderdeel' ('biomassa') van biodiesel..... Duurzame palmolie bestaat niet, zolang er vraag zal zijn naar dit voor de gezondheid gevaarlijke onzin product, zullen er enorme gebieden van tropiche wouden worden platgebrand......

Bij het platbranden van oerwoud wordt niet alleen een gigantische hoeveelheid CO2 geproduceerd, maar komt ook nog het veel sterkere broeikasgas methaan vrij (meer dan 80 keer zo sterk dan CO2!!). Ik hoef je natuurlijk niet uit te leggen dat deze zaak een enorme aanjager is van de klimaatverandering, waardoor het nog warmer wordt op aarde en we steeds vaker grote bosbranden zien die worden veroorzaakt door die opwarming, neem nu weer de enorme bosbranden in Californië..... Ook bij die bosbranden gebeurt hetzelfde wat betreft het produceren van CO2 en het vrijkomen van methaangas.... Bijna hopeloos mensen...... 

Eén ding is zeker, de temperatuur aan het eind van de eeuw zal veel hoger zijn dan de op de klimaattop van Parijs voorziene stijging van 1,5 graad Celsius, waar je moet denken aan een plus van 4, of 5 graden C., althans als het daarbij blijft.......

We 'mogen trots zijn op onze Rabobank en ING': de topschoften van deze banken investeren in oliewinning in het Amazonewoud en in 'duurzame palmolie' en dan durven deze banken te beweren dat men maatschappelijk verantwoord opereert en duurzaam bezig is........**

Big Agribusinesses are using the global pandemic — and the lack of media coverage — to their advantage: moving in equipment, clearcutting land, and illegally setting forests on fire, hoping they won’t get caught. In their relentless pursuit of profit they’re pushing animals to the brink of extinction, stealing land from Indigenous communities during a pandemic, and ushering in climate chaos. 

The mass scale burning of rainforests last year was just a preview of what’s to come this year. And right now, as Indigenous and local communities in the Amazon struggle to respond to the health crisis, corporations are taking their land in order to grow products like soy, beef and palm oil. They’re being forced to fight a war on two fronts.

The fires in the Amazon and Indonesia impact each and every one of us, from the air we breathe, to the clean water we drink and the food we eat. They threaten Indigenous Peoples and the survival of critically endangered species like jaguars, tigers and orangutans.

The fire season in the Amazon has just begun, but these fires aren’t natural — they’re intentional. Drought, along with the aggressive expansion of illegal burning could mean this year’s fires are even more destructive than last year.

When the Notre Dame Cathedral went up in flames, the world came together to support rebuilding. We can’t replace the Amazon rainforest — but we can keep it from disappearing. Will you be part of the solution? Because without the lungs of our planet, we can’t survive.

Politie VS arresteerde 3 zwarte misdaadslachtoffers, 3 tieners.....

De politie van Santa Clarita, een stad in de buurt van Los Angeles, kreeg een spoedmelding over de aanval van een man met een mes op 3 gekleurde tieners. Alsof alle demonstraties n.a.v. de politiemoord op George Floyd en alle andere gekleurde VS burgers die door de politie werden vermoord, niet hebben plaatsgevonden, arresteerde de politie niet de dader, maar de 3 jongens die het slachtoffer waren van een psychopathische gek...... 

De mensen die 911 hadden gebeld maakten de agenten duidelijk dat ze bezig waren de slachtoffers te arresteren, in plaats van de dader, echter de politie maande deze mensen zich te verwijderen en gingen 'doodleuk' door met de arrestatie.....

De jongens mogen van geluk spreken dat ze niet werden vermoord door de agenten, die hen o.a. onder schot hielden met de AR-15, een semi-automatisch wapen......

De VS, het land van de ongekende mogelijkheden, in (uiterst) negatieve zin wel te verstaan....... En dan zijn er zelfs in ons land mensen die de Black Lives Matter (BLM) demonstraties tegen politiegeweld en voor gelijkschakeling van alle burgers in de VS, zwaar overdreven noemen, ja de demonstranten zelfs voor terroristen durven uit te maken.......

Hier de petitietekst van het Care2 team, die eist dat de bewuste agenten worden ontslagen en dat het tijdens de arrestatie gebruikt semi-automatisch wapen, het korps wordt ontnomen, immers wat moet de politie met dergelijke wapens?? Te zot voor woorden!!

Police pointed guns at three innocent black boys

TheseBlack teenagers were victims of a crime, but police surrounded them with guns and ignored the real suspect.

It was 5pm and three adolescent boys were holding their skateboards, waiting for the bus in Santa Clarita, California near Los Angeles. It should have been a normal Friday evening, but then suddenly a man approached the teens, asking if they could provide him with crack cocaine, and then attempting to rob them. Multiple witnesses watched, horrified, as the man suddenly pulled out a knife and a whip and rushed to attack the three boys.


 
Scrambling to intervene and save their lives, the manager of a local business called the police, asking for help. But when the police arrived, they pointed all their guns — including an AR-15 rifle — on whom? On the teenagers. Because they were Black.Sign the petition to fire the cops involved and remove all AR-15 weapons from the force!

Onlookers immediately began calling out to the police, clarifying that the teenagers were instead the victims of a crime, and informing authorities who the actual suspect was:

"It's the other guy!"

"I am the one who called you; [that's] not them."

"Put your guns down — they're kids. They weren't doing anything!"

"I told your sergeant who was the problem and what was going on. For you guys to act this way is ridiculous."

But police didn't care to immediately listen. Instead, they told the onlookers to back away while they continued to keep the children in their guns' line of fire. Then they told each teen to walk backward with their hands up, until they reached the police cars. At that point, they were handcuffed and detained, though all three were ultimately released about 30 minutes later.

We know that all this happened because one witness recorded the 11-minute ordeal on her phone. As of August 12th, that video has been viewed more than 8 million times, and it's probably the only reason this catastrophe ever appeared in the news. 

While we're relieved beyond words that these boys are still alive and ultimately returned home safely, their safety should never have been in question. We shouldn't have to be grateful and relieved that the police didn't shoot Black kids. We shouldn't have to be glad they didn't kill or arrest unarmed, innocent civilians. We should be able to expect that our supposed "law enforcement" officers actually protect people — particularly children and victims of crimes. On top of that, what in the world are police doing with AR-15s? These are assault-style semi-automatic rifles that are designed for combat and warfare. But we are not at war on our streets. Police have no business carrying these terrifying military weapons!

All three of these kids could have been shot and killed that day. They each could have become just another face on a protest sign. Just another name in an Instagram post. Just another statistic on a sickening chart of police murders. Just another grave. Thank goodness they weren't. But it's not thanks to the cops.

So far, the Sheriff for Los Angeles County, Alex Villanueva, has said that "The matter is being investigated," but what does that really mean? In the past, it's often meant that killer and would-be-killer cops get off scot free. NOT THIS TIME!



These cops were reckless, they endangered young lives, and they were ready to hunt down three boys, only suspecting them because — essentially — it is a crime to live while Black in the United States.

The Sheriff says he's watched the video. It's time for him to act. Demand that Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva actually do something by removing all AR-15 military weapons from his department and by firing the dangerous police officers who almost killed three young teens!

Het zal een ieder wel duidelijk zijn dat de VS maatschappij racistisch is, of het nu gaat om onderdak, de gezondheidszorg, onderwijs of het financiële systeem (hypotheken enz.) t.b.v. de gekleurde bevolking, is gelijkheid met het witte deel van de bevolking ver te zoeken.....

Ook het justitiële systeem is doordrenkt van racisme, zwarte en andere gekleurde mensen lopen in verhouding veel vaker de kans (zwaar) te worden gestraft voor misdaden, dan de witte meerderheid.... Niet voor niets dan ook dat de gevangenissen onevenredig zijn bevolkt met zwarte (en anders gekleurde) minderheden....... Lullig genoeg zitten er zelfs mensen al meer dan 20 jaar vast omdat ze 3 maal een misdaad hebben begaan, en dan gaat het bepaald niet om moord, roofoverval of andere ernstige misdaden.........

Door een meer dan achterlijke bepaling in de grondwet van de VS en dan bepaald in het deel waarin slavernij wordt verboden zit een fiks gat: de grondwet stelt dat slavernij of onvrijwillige tewerkstelling niet zal bestaan in de VS of in gebieden waar haar jurisdictie geldt, behalve als straf voor een misdaad waarvoor men overtuigend als schuldige is aangewezen....... Uiteraard is dit geen letterlijke vertaling, echter daar komt deze 'loophole' wel op neer.......

Tel dat eens op bij het feit dat de meeste gevangenissen in de VS door een beursgenoteerd bedrijf worden bestuurd en je snapt dat de slavernij weer welig tiert in de VS, gevangenen krijgen niets of amper betaald voor hun werk en van de overheid wordt een gelijkmatige stroom van gevangenen gevraagd, zodat de gevangenissen economisch levensvatbaar blijven, waar deze in werkelijkheid fikse winsten schijnen te behalen voor de grofgraaiers die men aandeelhouders noemt........

Lees en teken ajb de petitie van het Care 2 team, aan deze vorm van moderne slavernij moet een eind gemaakt worden, zeker na alle geweld tegen vreedzame demonstranten die volgde n.a.v. de politiemoord op George Floyd! 

Overigens is de woede van gekleurden die wel geweld gebruikten te begrijpen, immers zij leven voor een overgroot deel in armoede en krijgen veel minder betaald dan hun witte collega's (als die een bepaald soort werk al willen doen), terwijl men hen het stemmen onmogelijk probeert te maken........ (en dat lukt bij elke verkiezing 'redelijk goed.....')


AFP Gevangenen uit de gevangenis van Oak Glen op weg om te helpen bij het bestrijden van een bosbrand op 28 september 2019 eveneens in Californië

Onder de eerste petitie is nog een extra petitie van het Care2 team toegevoegd, deze ontving ik vanmorgen in m'n mail. Deze petitie gaat in tegen een nog schandaliger vorm van slavernij, die overigens in de eerste petitie al even is aangegeven: in Californië zijn weer een groot aantal bosbranden en daar er behoefte is aan een enorm aantal brandweerlieden, die echter niet voorradig zijn, worden gevangenen gedwongen mee te helpen bij het blussen van deze bosbranden...... Dit bluswerk is al gevaarlijk voor geroutineerde brandweerlieden, laat staan wat dit betekent voor gevangenen die geen ervaring hebben met dit werk..... Overigens ook vorig jaar gebeurde e.e.a., zie foto hierboven. 

De gevangenen die dit werk meermaals hebben uitgevoerd, komen ondanks hun opgedane kennis, als ze vrijkomen, nooit in aanmerking voor een baan bij de brandweer, dat geldt overigens voor alle kennis over beroepen die ze elders in de gevangenis hebben opgedaan, zoals die voor het produceren van bepaalde goederen.....

In de eerste petitie nog even aandacht voor de andere gevangenen die volop ontsmettingsmiddelen produceren, veel te dicht op elkaar gepakt, maar ach, 'het gaat ten slotte alleen maar om gevangenen......'

En dan durft de fascistische racist Trump op de Republikeinse conventie te zeggen dat juist hij tegen racisme is.......

Teken beide petities ajb mensen en geeft het door!

This Constitutional loophole makes slavery still legal in the U.S.

Slavery is still legal as long as this loophole is in the U.S. Constitution. Demand an amendment to truly and fully abolish slavery, now!

Racism exists in every single system that makes up the United States' infrastructure — healthcare, education, credit, and finance, to name just a few. But one of the most blatantly racist structures is the criminal justice system, where a disproportionate amount of imprisoned people are Black. When they are imprisoned, Black folks are stripped of their rights thanks to the 13th amendment of the Constitution. This amendment, meant to abolish slavery, actually just dressed it up in different clothes by including this massive caveat:

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

People in prison are forced to perform labor for free or shockingly low pay, while kept locked up and being denied their autonomy. Additionally, prisons compel incarcerated people to pay for basic necessities like calling their families and reading library books.

Some inmates have been forced to risk their lives fighting fires even though they won't be eligible to become firefighters — or to enter many other professions — upon release.

Others are now making hand sanitizer for COVID-19 while being packed into overcrowded spaced where the disease runs unchecked, with minimal (if any) protections. Prison labor is modern-day slavery, but we have the power to end it. Climate change is burning California. In response, California is choosing to burn its inmates.

California is, once again, on fire. From north to south, wildfires are raging and causing even more unprecedented death and destruction. And it's getting worse every year, due to Trump administration policies that continue to let climate change spiral out of control. But since California doesn't have enough salaried, professional firefighters to combat these disasters, the state is turning to prisons. Locked up, shackled, with their rights and freedoms stripped away, incarcerated people — who are disproportionately Black and Brown — have little control over their lives, and the state is fully exploiting this fact.

To make up for the shortage in firefighters, prisons are compelling inmates to go out and battle the flames — paying them as little as $2 a day to put their lives on the line, while denying them the opportunity to become professional firefighters upon release. But because prisons have been the sites of some of the largest COVID-19 outbreaks in the country, due to cramped conditions and insufficient masks and hand sanitizer, many incarcerated people are simply too sick to help. The answer to this problem is not to shove more prisoners into the flames — it's to fight climate change and stop these fires once and for all. Please sign the petition demanding that the federal U.S. government take action against climate change and send federal aid now!

Elon Musk: de duistere kant van een genie en zijn bedrijf SpaceX

Elon Musk wordt door de media geprezen als een genie (en dat is hij), waar men hooguit wat opmerkingen heeft als hij weer eens uit de kerk klapt en mededelingen doet die verboden zijn voor een topgraaier van zijn beursgenoteerd bedrijf Tesla.

Musk is tevens de eigenaar van SpaceX, een particulier ruimtevaartbedrijf en juist daarmee laat hij een andere kant van zichzelf zien.... Als je SpaceX 'Googelt' zie je aan de rechterkant van de pagina staan dat SpaceX is gesitueerd in Hawthorne, Californië. Echter SpaceX heeft ook een onderdeel dat is gevestigd in Boca Chia in het zuiden van Texas, een dorp dat is gelegen in een natuurgebied.

Toen Musk met het plan kwam een vestiging van SpaceX te realiseren in Boca Chia, beloofde hij de inwoners dat hij een voorbeeldige buur zou zijn en zij geen overlast zouden ondervinden van de werkzaamheden, echter dat bleek een loze belofte....

Het ruimtevaartprogramma van Musk met zijn Falcon raketten is intussen geadopteerd door de VS overheid, iets dat onlangs nog eens werd beklonken met een bemande raket van SpaceX naar het internationaal ruimtestation. Daarmee, of eigenlijk al een fikse tijd daarvoor werd het terrein van SpaceX beveiligd en kregen de inwoners te maken met controleposten als zij hun dorp in of uit willen.....

Daar bleef het niet bij, de bewoners worden uit hun slaap gehouden door luidruchtige werkzaamheden en er zou nog al eens sprake zijn van een soort ontploffingen (waarschijnlijk tests met raketmotoren)...... Niet vreemd dus dat de bewoners ten einde raad zijn, waarop Musk bekend maakte het dorp, waar families al vele generaties wonen, te willen verplaatsen en/of de bewoners uit te kopen, zodat SpaceX 'ongestoord' haar werk kan doen...... 

Bij het voorgaande moet nog worden opgemerkt dat Musk over het natuurgebied heeft gezegd dat er niemand woont en mocht de boel ontploffen er in feite niets aan de hand is, immers niemand heeft er last van (wat nog meer opgaat als Musk het voor elkaar krijgt dat het dorp wordt gesloopt......) Nogmaals: het gaat niet alleen om het dorp maar ook om een belangrijk natuurgebied met o.a. een bedreigde soort zeeschildpadden, een natuurgebied dat tevens een corridor is naar andere natuurgebieden......

Het uitkopen van huiseigenaren is voor de bewoners en natuuractivisten geen optie, immers het dorp bevindt zich in een natuurgebied en ook voor de dieren in dat gebied zijn de werkzaamheden van SpaceX een grote bedreiging...... (neem alleen al de raketbrandstof waar mee wordt gewerkt, uitermate giftig en gegarandeerd dat een deel van deze troep weglekt en dat een deel van de giftige uitlaatgassen neerdaalt in de omgeving van het SpaceX werkterrein.....)

Boca Chia is a tiny, quiet community on the southernmost tip of Texas. Many of its residents' families have lived there for generations, and they describe it as "paradise." But since egomanic billionaire Elon Musk moved his SpaceX project into town, things have taken a turn for the worse. In the beginning, Elon Musk promised to to be an exemplary neighbor and to never interrupt residents' lives. Then came strange checkpoints leading in and out of the village, workplace explosions, and experiments that could shatter residents' windows. SpaceX's work started lasting into the wee hours of the night under blinding floodlights, while workers operated deafeningly loud equipment. Now, Musk wants all of the residents of Boca Chica to leave their treasured homes — forever. And then he's going to raze those homes to the ground.

 


The people of Boca Chica aren't the only ones in danger. The community is located within a national wildlife refuge and is part of a "wildlife corridor" that connects vital habitat for endangered sea turtles and migratory birds. But, as Musk has said, "We've got a lot of land with nobody around, so if it blows up, it's cool." This is truly evil. Musk seems to think that because he's rich, he can just do whatever he wants. Don't let this bully buy his way out of acting ethically! Sign the petition to demand that Elon Musk back down and stop his tyrannical campaign to take these people's homes away!

27 olietankers voor de westkust van de VS met een hoeveelheid van 20 miljoen vaten olie waarvoor geen opslag is

Een groot aantal mammoettankers ligt vooral voor de kust van Californië, terwijl de lading niet kan worden gelost. Het gaat hier om een hoeveelheid die gelijkstaat aan 20 miljoen vaten ruwe olie. Door het Coronavirus ligt de industrie en het 'kantoorleven' ook in de VS voor een fiks deel op haar gat en is de vraag naar olie op een niveau dat niet eerder werd gezien (uiteraard in verhouding tot het verbruik in het verleden).

Dit zet overigens nog eens een heel groot vraagteken bij de claim dat de VS zelf voorziend is wat betreft olieverbruik, blijkbaar is ook dat een onderdeel van de tactiek die de grootste leugenaar op aarde, Trump hanteert om zijn achterban te besodemieteren.... 

Om e.e.a. in verhouding te zien: het gaat in die mammoettankers om een hoeveelheid olie die 20% vertegenwoordigt van het dagelijkse wereldwijde verbruik aan olie (althans in 'normale tijden').......

Het is de vraag hoelang deze tankers voor anker moeten blijven liggen, waar de meeste van deze tankers zich al vanaf half april bevinden, waar de kans dat er iets misgaat groeit met de dag, als één van die tankers bijvoorbeeld door zwaar weer zou vergaan, is de ramp voor het zeeleven niet te overzien.....

Voor de kust van Singapore liggen zelfs honderden olietankers voor anker....*

Oil tankers carrying enough crude to satisfy 20% of the world’s daily consumption are gathered off California’s coast with nowhere to go as fuel demand collapses.

Almost three dozen ships -- scattered in waters from Long Beach to the San Francisco Bay -- are mostly acting as floating storage for oil that’s going unused as the coronavirus pandemic shutters businesses and takes drivers off the road. Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s (MPC) refinery in Martinez, California, has been idled and others, including Chevron Corp.’s El Segundo refinery, have curtailed crude processing as the state orders residents to stay at home.

The more than 20 million barrels of crude is the highest volume of crude to ever float off the West Coast at one time, according to Paris-based Kpler SAS, which tracks tanker traffic. 
About three quarters of those tankers are holding oil in storage, meaning they have been floating steadily for seven days, also a record.

Storage has become increasingly scarce as a growing supply glut collides with collapsing fuel demand. As traditional tanks have filled, oil has been pushed onto tankers to float off Singapore, the U.S. Gulf Coast and, now, the U.S. West Coast.

The slowdown in oil deliveries into California was already becoming evident last quarter, when 38.8 million barrels of crude was delivered into Long Beach, down from 42 million barrels a year earlier, according to Port of Long Beach data.

The Seaexpress, a tanker that normally carries fuel, is currently holding crude for Royal Dutch Shell Plc. for at least a month in Puget Sound, Washington, after data on the ships draft indicated it loaded up at the company’s Anacortes refinery.

PFAS vergiftiging grondwater in delen van Californië

WorldBeyond War (WBW) brengt o.a. een artikel waarin het leger van de VS wordt aangewezen als schuldige voor PFAS vergiftigingen van waterbronnen, iets waar wij in Nederland wat betreft de PFAS crisis geen of veel te weinig aandacht voor hebben gehad, immers de niet afbreekbare PFAS chemicaliën belanden uiteindelijk in het grondwater en het is maar de vraag of de waterzuiveringsinstallaties deze verontreiniging kunnen verwijderen uit het water dat wij drinken......

In Californië zoals gezegd vervuiling door jarenlange oefening met foute blusvloeistoffen/poeders door het Amerikaanse leger, dat zo nogmaals en geheel ten overvloede nog eens laat zien, dat het niet alleen in het buitenland, maar ook binnenlands terreur uitoefent......

Nog een 'mooi feitje': ook de PFAS vergiftiging van grond in ons land is voor een fiks deel terug te brengen op een blusvloeistof/poeder, waar al in de 70er jaren van de vorige eeuw over bekend was dat ze o.a. kanker veroorzaken, ofwel ook in Nederland moet men hebben beseft dat deze stoffen gevaarlijk zijn voor de volksgezondheid (uit het artikel van WBW blijkt dat men dit inderdaad al in de 70er jaren wist!!!).... Toch is men in de VS gewoon doorgegaan met het gebruikt van deze stoffen en hetzelfde moet hier zijn gebeurd........

In het artikel van WBW dat ik overnam wordt m.n. over 1 plek in Californië bericht, echter daar zijn veel meer van deze plakken te vinden, waar het grondwater al is verontreinigd met een aantal gevaarlijke PFAS chemicaliën en zoals de schrijver van het artikel terecht opmerkt: alle chemicaliën in PFAS zijn gevaarlijk!! (zie ook de lijst met aandoeningen in het artikel hieronder, aandoeningen die je over kan houden aan PFAS inname of anders gezegd: vergiftiging met PFAS chemicaliën) 

In Nederland passen we nu de normen aan, zodat er meer PFAS chemicaliën in de grond mogen zitten als men deze grond wil verplaatsen of op andere manier wil gebruiken......* Te zot voor woorden en levensgevaarlijk!

PFAS Contamination Near George Air Force Base Threatens Public Health

The groundwater in Victorville and throughout much of California is contaminated with PFAS, the “forever chemicals.”

On September 10, 2018 the Lahontan Regional Water Board tested the well water of the home owned by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Culberton located at 18399 Shay Road in Victorville, California. The water was found to contain high levels of 25 separate PFAS chemicals, several that are known to be human carcinogens. Culberton’s home is a few hundred feet from the eastern boundary of the shuttered George Air Force Base.

Culberton declined to be interviewed so we’ll rely on the public record. The letter he received from the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board on February 11, 2019 states:

“Based on the Air Force’s interview with you, we understand that you and your tenant use bottled water as your water source, and this well is being used only for irrigation purposes. 
 The comparison of the combined PFOS and PFOA concentration with USEPA’s concentration level (see the table below) suggests that this well water may not be suitable for human consumption as it exceeds the lifetime HA level.”

The house next door, located at 18401 Shay Road, was found to have a similarly contaminated well. The property was sold on June 19, 2018 to Matthew Arnold Villarreal as sole owner. The transfer took place three months before the well was tested by the water board. Villarreal is the Water Supply Supervisor of the City of Victorville Water Department. 

The level of contaminants of other private wells in the vicinity of George AFB is unknown.
George Air Force Base, which shut down in 1992, used aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) in routine fire training exercises, along with nearly 50 other bases in the state. Per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are the active ingredient in the foams, which were allowed to leach into groundwater and surface water.

Despite knowing since the 1970’s that the practice threatened human health, the military continues to use the chemicals at installations in the U.S. and around the world.

Groundwater collected on September 19, 2018 at Production Well Adelanto 4 Victorville, near the intersection of Turner Road and Phantom East, also showed the presence of dangerous levels of various PFAS chemicals. The notice from the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) was addressed to: Ray Cordero, Water Superintendent, City of Adelanto, Water Department.

According to the October, 2005 George AFB Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) Adjournment Report, groundwater plumes containing contaminants had not
migrated into drinking water wells or in the Mojave River. “The drinking water in the community continues to be safe for consumption,” according to the final report.

People in the community have likely been drinking poisoned water for two generations. Restoration Advisory Boards have been criticized for trivializing severe environmental contamination caused by the military while serving to track and contain community resistance.

Culberton’s water puts the PFAS epidemic into perspective. The following chart is taken from the water board’s letter to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Culberton:

The 25 PFAS compounds found in the Culberton well totaled 940 parts per trillion (ppt.) 
Neither the federal government nor the state of California track or regulate contamination in private wells. Meanwhile, public health scientists have warned of the cumulative effect of these carcinogens. The nation’s top public health officials say 1 ppt of PFAS in drinking water is potentially dangerous. The NIH’s National Library of Medicine provides a brilliant search engine that provides the toxicological effects of the contaminants above, along with others regularly found in our drinking water and environment.

Many of the substances are harmful if they come into contact with the skin. Simply click on the link to the NIH site above to begin the process of investigating the disastrous impacts on human health. Some of these chemicals are used with pesticides as the active ingredient for ant bait traps. In addition, many PFAS chemicals described above either cause or contribute to the following conditions:

• Alterations in thyroid hormone levels, especially in in aging populations
• Death from cerebrovascular disease
• Increased serum cholesterol and triglycerides levels
• Positive association between PFAS levels and ADHD
• Maternal PFAS levels in early pregnancy were associated with smaller abdominal circumference and birth length.
• Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
• Positive association between the maternal concentrations of PFOA and the number of episodes of common cold for the children
• Increased episodes of gastroenteritis.
• Mutations of DNA
• Increased levels of prostate, liver and kidney cancer
• Liver and brain dysfunction
• Airway inflammation and altered airway function
• Male reproductive disorders
• Hypoactive response to nicotine
  

At the risk of beating the dead horse mutagen, two of the most prevalent PFAS contaminants in Culberton’s water – PFHxS (540 ppt) and PFHxA (72 ppt) are extraordinarily present in California’s municipal water wells used for drinking water. Neither the federal government nor the state seem too concerned with these contaminants. Instead, they’re fixated on just two of the 6,000 types of PFAS chemicals – PFOS & PFOA – which are no longer produced or used.

On February 6, 2020 the California State Water Resources Control Board (CSWRCB) lowered its “Response Level” to 10 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and 40 ppt for PFOS. If a water system exceeds the response levels for these carcinogens, the system is required to take the water source out of service or provide public notification within 30 days of the confirmed detection. Meanwhile, of the 568 wells tested by the state in 2019 164 were found to contain PFHxS and 111 contained PFHxA.

Specifically, PFHxS has been detected in umbilical cord blood and is transmitted to the embryo to a larger extent than what is reported for PFOS. Prenatal exposure to PFHxS is associated with occurrence of infectious diseases, such as ottis media, pneumonia, RS virus, and varicella in early life.

PFHxA exposure may be associated with Gilbert Syndrome, a genetic liver disorder, although the material has not been widely studied. The following charts detail the state’s water systems with the highest levels of PFHxS and PFHxS in wells used for drinking water, based on the very limited 2019 data:
