Oliemaatschappij ENI krijgt boete voor leugen dat biodiesel goed is voor het milieu en de luchtvervuiling vermindert

De Italiaanse (staats-) oliemaatschappij ENI is door de Italiaanse waakhond (voor foute reclames) gepakt voor het 'greenwash verhaal' dat biodiesel goed zou zijn voor de luchtkwaliteit en het milieu in het algemeen........ 

In werkelijkheid is palmoliediesel drie keer zo slecht als gewone diesel, zo heeft de EU geconcludeerd na onderzoek...... Te gek voor woorden dan ook dat men pas vanaf 2023 gaat beginnen met het terugdringen van palmolie voor diesel en pas in 2030 moet het geheel afgelopen zijn met deze dieselsoort...... Kortom ook in deze laat de EU zien meer op te hebben met de maatschappijen die de aarde naar de kloten helpen dan met het volk waarvan men de belangen zou moeten behartigen als volksvertegenwoordiging...... (moet je nagaan: drie keer zo slecht als gewone diesel en alsnog toestaan dat daar nog jarenlang mensen onder moeten lijden en oerwoud voor wordt verbrand, schande!!!)

De uiterst grove leugen dat biodiesel goed is voor het milieu en de luchtkwaliteit, duikt overigens ook met de regelmaat van de klok op in ons land, gemiddeld bijna 1 keer per week is er wel een pias die met dit belachelijke verhaal hoopt de noodzaak tot echte actie tegen de klimaatverandering te kunnen tackelen..... (alsof we niet ook moeten stoppen met de enorme vervuiling vanwege het grote aantal mensen dat daar wereldwijd jaarlijks aan overlijdt en dat jaren eerder na een akelig ziekbed......)

ENI gebruikt palmolie om haar diesel 'te vergroenen', echter zoals je wellicht weet is niet alleen de verbranding van palmolie wel degelijk schadelijk voor het milieu en de volksgezondheid, maar wordt de lucht zeker niet schoner door extra productievan het kankerverwekkende ultrafijnstof dat vrijkomt bij verbranding..... (deze fijnstof is gebonden aan de giftige stoffen die bij verbranding van palmolie wordt geproduceerd......)

De vraag naar palmolie, of die nu zogenaamd duurzaam is of niet, zorgt ervoor dat men oerwoud blijft verbranden zoals in Indonesië en Brazilië........ Er is maar één vorm van duurzame palmolie en dat is de palmolie die niet wordt geoogst!! Hier de link naar een aantal vragen over palmolie, beantwoord door Milieudefensie. Deze in feite flutorganisatie durft niet te stellen dat palmolie slecht is voor de gezondheid, terwijl men in de beantwoording wel aangeeft dat palmolie vol zit met verzadigde vetten en die zijn wel degelijk slecht voor de gezondheid, sterker nog: Milieudefensie geeft zelfs aan dat verzadigde vetten cholesterol verhogend zijn en daarom hart en vaatziekten veroorzaken (daarnaast veroorzaakt het obesitas)....... Ongelofelijk!!

Italian regulators today fined Italy’s oil giant Eni over advertisements on TV and in newspapers, digital media and petrol stations that falsely claimed Eni Diesel+ was ‘green’. The watchdog states that the marketing campaign deceives consumers when it claims that the ‘green’ diesel has a positive impact on the environment, saves fuel and reduces air pollution. It is the first ruling against greenwashing in Italy’s history.

Italy’s Competition and Market Authority (all'Autorità Garante per la Concorrenza e il Mercato in Italian) inflicted the highest possible fine (5 million euros) on the state-backed energy giant. The agency told Eni not to use the advertisement again after a complaint was lodged by Italy’s consumer organisation Movimento Difesa del Citadino, environmental NGO Legambiente and Brussels-based campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E). The oil company has been running ads on TV, print and online platforms since 2016. The energy company withdrew the advertising campaigns months ago.

The watchdog’s decision delivers a blow to attempts by fossil fuel companies to portray biofuels to politicians and the public as environmentally friendly and part of the solution to climate change. The ruling follows three extensions requested by Eni to provide further information and data to prove their case.

Francesco Luongo, president of the consumers’ association Movimento Difesa del Cittadino, said: “Today’s Authority decision represents the first important sanction for ‘greenwashing’ over misleading advertising messages about how green a product really is. 
The protection of the environment is a fundamental challenge in the evolution of the global economy, as stated by the Green New Deal (GND), approved yesterday by the EU Commission, and claims should not be distorted, or worse falsified, by companies through unscrupulous marketing that translates into unfair commercial practices to the detriment of consumers”.

Stefano Ciafani, president of Legambiente, said: “Today’s a historic decision because for the first time in Italy we officially talk about greenwashing and finally this big deceit against citizens, performed by one of greatest climate enemy, ENI, is exposed. The Authority proved we were right. But this is not enough. It’s high time for the Government to finally bet on truly sustainable development, starting right now and stop subsidies for palm oil diesel,  until finally putting an end to all direct and indirect subsidies to those sectors causing climate change.”

Eni Diesel + is a new diesel fuel that is 15% composed of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) from Eni’s Venice refinery. This ENI refinery makes HVO from crude palm oil and its derivatives, as shown by official data from the governmental energy agency Gestore Servizi Energetici.

The watchdog ruling states that “it’s particularly deceitful to use the denomination “Green Diesel’ and the qualifications ‘green’ and ‘renewable’ to refer to the HVO component of the product”, mainly because of the indirect land-use change emissions associated with palm oil use. It also argues that there's no justification or calculation that justifies the 40% reduction in air pollution. 

Italian green NGOs urge the government to stop incentives for the use of palm oil in diesel, as over 50,000 Italians have requested already at www.change.org/unpienodipalle.
Italy is the second largest palm oil biodiesel producer in the European Union. More than half (54%) of all palm oil and derivatives imported into Italy in 2018 was used to make biodiesel, mainly at Eni’s refinery at Porto Marghera, Venice. The palm oil comes predominantly from Indonesia and, to a lesser extent, from Malaysia, two countries with notable deforestation rates in the past two decades. 

Europe labelled palm oil in diesel as unsustainable 

Europeans are increasingly eating less and less palm oil but are inadvertently burning more and more in cars and trucks. Last year 65% of all the palm oil imported into the EU was used for energy. 53% of all palm imports was used to make biodiesel for cars and trucks - an all-time high - and 12% to generate electricity and heating - another record. 

Palm oil used for biodiesel grew again in 2018 - by 3% - while the use of palm oil to make food and animal feed dropped significantly, by 11%. This trend proves that the imported deforestation from palm oil is mainly driven by EU and national biofuels policy. 

Last March, the EU decided that palm oil is not a green fuel and should not be promoted because it causes deforestation. The use of palm oil in diesel will be gradually reduced from 2023 and should reach zero in 2030, with some exemptions. Thus, Italy, like any other EU country, can amend today the national targets for renewable energy in transport to remove incentives for using palm oil and its derivatives in biodiesel,

Veronica Aneris, manager of Transport & Environment in Italy, said: “There is no such thing as green diesel made from palm oil or any other food crop because they cause deforestation. Oil companies need to stop trying to mislead drivers and politicians with the fake claim that biodiesel protects the environment and our health. Instead they should invest in proper clean fuels such as renewable electricity. The government should push oil companies to do their fair share to decarbonise the economy.”

Palm oil is known to be an important driver of the destruction of rainforests and wildlife. 
According to a study for the European Commission, biodiesel from palm oil is three times worse for the climate than regular diesel when indirect emissions from changes in the use of land are accounted for.

Afgelopen dinsdag kwam ik al met een artikel over de enorme invloed die oliemaatschappijen uitoefenen op klimaattoppen*, waar ze zelfs aan mogen zitten en dat voor meer dan 90% van de tijd, terwijl milieugroepen die onze aarde nog enigszins wensen te beschermen, niet eens voor 10% van de tijd mogen meespreken.......

Mijn schrijven werd begeleid door een petitie van Corporate Accountability, een petitie die wij als niet VS burgers niet kunnen tekenen. 

Gelukkig komt SumOfUs (SOU) wel met een petitie die eist dat de oliemaatschappijen en andere grote vervuilers niet langer mogen aanzitten bij klimaattoppen

SumOfUs wijst op een verdrag van 25 jaar geleden waarbij soevereine regeringen voor het gerecht kunnen worden gesleept als zij milieumaatregelen nemen die tegen het belang van de grote vervuilers zijn.... De geheime rechtbank (ISDS) die zich hiermee bemoeit is dezelfde die voor het TTIP verdrag zou worden ingesteld, of zal worden ingesteld, mocht de VS alsnog akkoord gaan...   Volgens SOU zou dit verdrag dat geheim is gehouden voor het grote publiek, zelfs het akkoord van de klimaattop Parijs te niet kunnen doen (blijkbaar heeft men bij SOU nog een hoge pet op van dit waardeloze akkoord). Wel maakt dit nog eens duidelijk dat de grote vervuilers de macht hebben om te eisen dat ze deel mogen uitmaken van klimaattoppen!! SumOfUs hoeft zich dat overigens niet af te vragen, daar Shell het akkoord van Parijs nu al op meerdere manieren schendt....** 

Dan te bedenken dat naast Exxon, ook Shell al decennia lang uit eigen onderzoek weet dat de klimaatverandering wordt veroorzaakt door de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen en ondanks dat klimaatsceptische 'wetenschappers' inhuurt om het tegendeel te beweren........ (een zware misdaad tegen de mensheid in haar geheel en rijp voor het Internationaal Strafhof >> ICC)

Uniper, een bedrijf dat in handen is van de Finse staat en dat van het Duitse energiebedrijf E-On de kolen- en gascentrales (ook in Nederland en België) heeft overgenomen, bereidt een rechtszaak voor tegen de Nederlandse staat vanwege het sluiten van (oude) kolencentrales.........  Boycot smeerpijp bedrijf Uniper en zegt het voort!!

The Energy Charter Treaty gives fossil fuel companies power over governments. It’s time to end it.

Europe’s got a dirty secret.

It could kill the Paris Climate Agreement, and even block EU countries from implementing a Green New Deal.

A piece of paper signed 25 years ago gives big oil, gas, and coal companies the power to sue entire countries for billions over laws that damage their profits. And right now, they’re using that power to block a green energy transition and accelerate climate chaos.

The Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) can be used to challenge oil drilling bans, the rejection of gas pipelines and taxes on fossil fuels. And it works. Governments are forced either to relax their clean energy laws, or pay eye-watering sums of money in compensation to fossil fuel companies.

Tell the EU and the government of the Netherlands to pull out of the Energy Charter Treaty!

Citizens all over the EU want a Green New Deal (GND). But that’ll only happen if we rip up this unfair agreement and stop letting fossil fuel corporations boss us around. Italy already did it. Now, the rest of Europe has to follow suit.

The number of lawsuits under the ECT -- which take place not in normal courts, but in closed-door tribunals -- has exploded in recent years. There have been over 83 cases in the past six years alone, and the majority have been decided or settled in favour of dirty energy corporations. This so-called "Investor State Dispute Settlement" (ISDS) regime must end.

Take the multinational Vattenfall, which was able to relax environmental restrictions on one of its coal plants by suing Germany for €1.4 billion. Or Germany’s own Uniper, which is threatening the Netherlands with a massive lawsuit if it goes ahead with a coal ban.

But we’ve got a chance to strike back. All over the continent, people like you and me are pushing our governments to take action against the dirty fossil fuel industry. We’ve made climate change a major issue in recent elections and staged millions-strong climate strikes.

Now, we need to use that same people power to end the Energy Charter Treaty -- because if we don’t, we’ll soon be back at square one.

There’s no time to waste -- tell European governments to stop the fossil fuel industry’s bullying and pull out of the Energy Charter Treaty.

De democratische politici Earl Blumenauer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez en Bernie Sanders wijzen de Trump administratie op de vreselijke gevolgen van de klimaatverandering, gevolgen waar de VS nu al mee te maken heeft, gezien de steeds vaker optredende bosbranden en de steeds heviger en vaker optredende verwoestende orkanen. Niet vreemd dus dat de voornoemde politici aan de bel trekken, waar zij stellen dat Trump de vluchtelingen die de VS willen bereiken, wel heeft uitgeroepen tot noodtoestand (waarbij hij hen afschildert als misdadigers...) en de ogen sluit voor de klimaatramp die zich voor zijn ogen (en de rest van zijn administratie) voltrekt. 

Uiteraard is het afroepen van de noodtoestand over vluchtelingenstromen door Trump te belachelijk voor woorden*, waar Trump en zijn administratie keer op keer durven te stellen dat de klimaatverandering een leugen is van linkse krachten..... Dit terwijl zoals gezegd de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering al velen in de VS in diepe ellende hebben gestort en deze verhevigde natuurrampen het volk van de VS al honderden miljarden dollars aan belastinggeld hebben gekost.....

De VS wordt in feite deels bestuurd door het bedrijfsleven, inclusief de oliemaffia, waar de grote bedrijven op z'n zachtst gezegd grote moeite hebben met maatregelen die de klimaatverandering nog enigszins kunnen afremmen, daar hun winsten daar onder zullen leiden en zelfs zouden kunnen leiden tot het sluiten van hele bedrijfstakken die niet anders doen dan de klimaatverandering aanjagen.......

The US Government Should Declare Climate Emergency

The havoc that will soon be wrought by climate change is unfathomable. It's a crisis — one which Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Bernie Sanders demanded yesterday the US government recognize. It's a needed step towards winning a Green New Deal.

To justify his administration’s barbaric actions at the Southern border, Donald Trump is using the language of crisis. In May 2019, a scaremongering statement from the White House declared that the United States “has been invaded by hundreds of thousands of people coming through Mexico.” This “sustained influx of illegal aliens” is “overwhelming our schools, overcrowding our hospitals, draining our welfare system, and causing untold amounts of crime,” the administration said.

This, of course, is bullshit.

The United States is currently seeing a net outflow of undocumented immigrants. And even if we weren’t, these people have a right to migrate in order to create a life free from wanton violence and economic devastation — chaos largely created by the United States.

Immigrants do not “overwhelm” us; they are us, and their presence in this country does not constitute a crisis. Their abuse at the hands of our government, however, absolutely does.

The Trump administration recently invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify its inhumane treatment of immigrants on US soil. This struck Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Oregon as unjustifiably hypocritical. What if we used the language of crisis to instead describe an actual mass emergency: the looming threat of climate disaster, which the Trump administration categorically neglects and which, unlike the presence of undocumented immigrants, requires drastic and immediate political action in order to ensure public safety?

Blumenauer has teamed up with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to propose legislation declaring global warming a national and international emergency.

The resolution was submitted to the House of Representatives on Tuesday. In order to address the crisis at hand, it calls for “a national, social, industrial, and economic mobilization of the resources and labor of the United States at a massive-scale to halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations.”

The legislation may have been inspired by Trump’s duplicity, but the idea did not spring fully formed from Blumenauer’s mind. It is a response to climate activists, who have been increasingly demanding that national, state, and local governments around the world declare the climate crisis an emergency.

In April, the new group Extinction Rebellion occupied central London for ten days. “The science is clear: It is understood that we are facing an unprecedented global emergency,” says the group. “We are in a life or death situation of our own making. We must act now.” Extinction Rebellion’s first demand is that governments “must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.”

Declarations of emergency are also the most urgent demand of The Climate Mobilization, a US-based climate activist group waging a campaign to pressure governments to sign on. The group states that “declaring Climate Emergency is the critical first step to launching the comprehensive mobilization solution required to rescue and rebuild civilization.”

In response to the Extinction Rebellion protests, the United Kingdom House of Commons declared emergency in May. Similar declarations around the world are pouring in. To date, climate emergency has been declared by 740 jurisdictions globally, one of which is New York City, which declared emergency in June. Los Angeles appears set to follow suit. The joint resolution proposed by Blumenauer, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders would make the United States the seventeenth and largest nation to heed the crisis declaration call from climate activists.

It remains to be seen whether the US federal climate emergency resolution has the support needed to pass into law. The United States government sustains intimate ties with the fossil fuel industry, ties that have so far prevented political representatives from touching anything that opens the door, as this resolution does, to a national mobilization to cease fossil fuel extraction and transition to a zero-emissions economy. Even though the resolution is nonbinding, it clearly gestures toward the implementation of a Green New Deal (GND) which, as envisioned by Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, would spell the end of the fossil fuel era.

There’s another reason legislators may be hesitant, despite clear evidence that we are indeed facing a climate emergency, to vote for a bill that paves the way for a Green New Deal. The GND isn’t just about saving the planet: it’s about doing so in a way that builds the power of working people and erodes inequality, on the basis that the current capitalist system brought us to the brink of destruction to begin with.

To this end, the GND would create millions of green jobs, and insists that they come with “a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States.”

American politicians aren’t just beholden to the fossil fuel industry; they’re beholden to the capitalist class writ large. Reducing unemployment and building worker power — including providing universal healthcare, education, and housing, also outlined in the GND — makes exploitation harder, which means profits for the few will sink even as living standards for the many improve. There’s no doubt that the GND will face tremendous pushback in the halls of power, and that pushback may begin with shooting down this declaration.

The best shot we have at muscling this bill through is to raise hell in the streets. It’s sound politics: when the people in power don’t want to budge, the majority must create pressure from the outside to force their hand. It’s no easy task. But if people fight hard enough, we might be able to get the United States — the biggest carbon polluter in world history — to formally acknowledge the real crisis at hand.

The Canary bracht afgelopen vrijdag een artikel van Bryan Wall waarin deze het tweede debat van de democratische presidentskandidaten beschrijft. Met name de aanval van kandidaat Bernie Sanders op de oorlogsmachine van de VS trok zijn aandacht, hoewel het bekend is dat Sanders om het zacht te zeggen, geen voorstander is van het uiterst agressieve VS buitenlandbeleid, beter gezegd 'terreurbeleid.......'

Het steekt Sanders vooral dat een enorme groep VS burgers in armoede moet leven, waarvan ruim 50 miljoen zelfs afhankelijk is van voedselbonnen....... Uiteraard is ook de toegang van arme groepen tot de gezondheidszorg een speerpunt voor Sanders, waar de grote onderlaag nog steeds geen of slechte toegang tot gezondheidszorg heeft......

De VS geeft nu meer dan 700 miljard dollar uit aan oorlogsvoering, althans volgens het SIPRI, echter er wordt nog veel meer uitgegeven aan oorlogsvoering, daar er bijvoorbeeld geen budgetten voor geheime oorlogsvoering (o.l.v. de CIA) bekend worden gemaakt, noch de kosten voor het opzetten van opstanden (om tot een coup te leiden van VS niet welgevallige landen), noch de kosten voor geheime cyberaanvallen (ofwel cyberterreur), noch die voor economische oorlogsvoering die bijvoorbeeld in Venezuela al tot 40.000 doden heeft geleid......*

Sanders houdt het oorlogsbudget overigens op 1,5 triljard dollar, wat in onze weergave van die getalsaanduiding dik meer dan 1 biljoen dollar is...... Terwijl de VS tegelijkertijd amper iets doet tegen de klimaatverandering, is oorlogsvoering ook nog eens een enorme aanjager is van de klimaatverandering........

Vergeet verder niet dat de VS jaarlijks miljoenen kwijtraakt door de enorme bosbranden, waarbij vorig jaar zelfs een stadje bijna geheel werd weggevaagd...... Om over de vele miljarden schade door orkanen maar te zwijgen, beiden weergerelateerde rampen die één op één te danken zijn aan de klimaatverandering, ofwel: hoe dom en/of gevaarlijk moet je zijn om dan nog klimaatscepticus te spelen, zoals Trump en andere fascisten/neoliberalen (2 kanten van dezelfde medaille), zoals Bolsonaro in Brazilië dat doen......

Bernie Sanders took aim at both the US war machine and climate catastrophe during the second Democratic Party debate on 28 June. Sanders insisted that, instead of spending obscene amounts of money on weapons, tackling climate catastrophe should be a key priority.

He also attacked the levels of poverty and inequality that exist in the US. And he argued that people must stand up and be counted if they want things to change.

War and climate

Sanders slammed both US militarism and Washington’s lack of action on climate breakdown. He insisted that “instead of spending a trillion and a half dollars on weapons of destruction”, the real enemy is climate catastrophe. Calling it the “common enemy”, he went on to declare that the goal should be to:

“transform the world’s energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy”.

The world’s future, he said, “rests on us doing that”:

Sanders also laid out his history of anti-war activism. Unlike his fellow presidential hopeful Joe Biden, Sanders voted against the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also revealed that he pushed to end US support of Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen:

Not stopping there, Sanders also proclaimed his opposition to a war with Iran. He asserted:

“I will do everything I can to prevent a war with Iran which would be far worse than the disastrous war with Iraq”.

Change

Sanders went on to state that many people watching the debate probably believe that nothing changes in the US and wonder:

“How come, for the last 45 years, wages have been stagnant for the middle class? How come we have the highest rate of childhood poverty? How come 45 million people still have student debt? How come three people own more wealth than the bottom half of America?”

His answer was that:

“nothing will change unless we have the guts to take on Wall Street, the insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the military-industrial complex, and the fossil-fuel industry”.

And if this doesn’t happen, he argued, the “rich will get richer” while everyone else struggles:

Bernie Sanders showed during the debate that he understands this holistic approach. From his criticism of US militarism to his understanding of inequality in the US, he is head and shoulders above the likes of Biden.

If change is going to happen, Sanders becoming president would be a strong step in the right direction.
