Europese Commissie overweegt genetisch gemanipuleerd voedsel toe te staan: de weg naar CETA en TTIP

De Europese Commissie maakt een grap van haar zogenaamde bezorgdheid over de klimaatverandering en hoe die moet worden aangepakt. Nog steeds is deze commissie met haar valse 'green deal' voor het verbranden van hout als biomassa, terwijl die verbranding nog een fractie vuiler is dan die van steenkool, bovendien worden daar bewezen hele bossen voor gekapt...... Daarnaast heeft de Europese Commissie onlangs gesteld dat ook gas (wat vooral zal bestaan uit LNG) en kernenergie behoren tot groene energie, anders gezegd deze commissie heeft lak aan wat voor de EU bevolkingen belangrijk is..... Dat blijkt ook uit de overweging van deze commissie gentech voedsel toe te staan in de EU, terwijl die commissie niet eens democratisch wordt gekozen...... (ofwel deze commissie die ongelofelijk belangrijke beslissingen neemt is daarvoor niet geroepen door de EU bevolking)

Gas of beter gezegd LNG, wordt door de Europese Commissie als duurzame energie neergezet, puur en alleen daar deze commissie achter de enorme anti-Russische propaganda staat en dat zelfs promoot..... Gas dat vanuit Rusland wordt aangevoerd is 1.000 keer te prefereren boven  LNG,  daar de laatste vooral zal moeten worden aangevoerd uit de VS en de Golfstaten, waarbij de export van LNG uit de Golfstaten duurzamer dan die uit de VS..... Het omzetten van aardgas naar LNG is een milieuvervuilend proces, waarbij methaangas vrijkomt, een 80 keer zo sterk broeikasgas dan CO2..... De geproduceerde LNG moet dan ook nog eens worden vervoerd met uiterst vervuilende tankers naar Europa.... LNG uit de VS is al helemaal de dood in de pot, dit gas wordt middels fracken verkregen (schaliegas), waarbij grote hoeveelheden methaangas vrijkomen en waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van (ook kankerverwekkende) chemicaliën gemengd met water om dat gas te kunnen winnen..... Het uiterst gevaarlijk vervuilde water dat overblijft na fracken mag vrijelijk worden geloosd op open water, een vorm van subsidie die de VS overheid geeft aan de oliemaatschappijen, immers als die maatschappijen dat water eerst zouden moeten reinigen zou de prijs per kubieke meter gas enorm stijgen..... Echter volgens de Europese Commissie is LNG dus duurzaam......

Dezelfde Europese Commissie overweegt nu om gentech voedsel toe te staan op de EU markt.... Voedsel dat bol staat van het gif dat de planten niet aantast vanwege de genetische manipulatie..... De reden voor het grote verzet tegen gentech voedsel was en is vooral ook gericht tegen de vrijhandelsverdragen CETA en TTIP, de eerste is een verdrag met Canada, dat nog door een paar EU-lidstaten moet worden geaccordeerd en de tweede is een verdrag waarvoor de EU onder Trump tevergeefs heeft gelobbyd in Washington..... Je behoeft niet de hersencapaciteit van Einstein te hebben om te bedenken waarom de EU gentech troep wil toestaan in de EU, immers daarmee wordt de grootste tegenstand van EU burgers tegen dat gentech Frankensteinvoedsel teniet gedaan en staat in feite nog maar weinig in de weg om ons ook het smerige TTIP verdrag door de strot te duwen..... (en CETA voor de landen die nog niet hebben getekend) De enige drempel zullen dan nog de geheime rechtbanken (ISDS*) zijn waarvoor bijvoorbeeld de grote bedrijven uit de VS en Canada afzonderlijke EU lidstaten kunnen dagen als zij hun producten weigeren op hun markt....

De praktijk wijst uit dat de rechtszaken voor dergelijke rechtbanken voor het overgrote deel worden gewonnen door de bedrijven en niet door de gedaagde landen..... Deze rechtszaken zijn geheim zodat de burgers niet weten wie de grote bedrijven zijn die lak hebben aan hun gezondheid, immers dan zouden burgers kunnen besluitende producten van die bedrijven niet langer te kopen...... Je kan er dan ook donder op zeggen dat we ook hier te maken zullen krijgen met een etikettering die nu al in de VS wordt toegestaan waarbij bepaalde ingrediënten niet worden genoemd, zodat burgers niet kunnen besluiten een artikel in de winkel te laten staan als zij weten dat dit de gezondheid ernstig kan schaden.......

Grote bedrijven die middels een machtige lobby bijna continu toegang hebben tot de burelen van de Europese Commissie hebben het dan ook bijna voor elkaar dat onze etikettering zal worden aangepast ten voordele van hun producten..... Kortom de kans dat EU burgers de vrijhandelsverdragen CETA en TTIP nog kunnen tegenhouden wordt met het toestaan van gentech voedsel bijna onmogelijk......

Lees en teken daarom de petitie ajb we hebben geen Frankensteinvoedsel nodig en we willen al helemaal niet voedselafhankelijk zijn van gifmengers als Bayer (ook eigenaar Monsanto) en Syngenta, die keer op keer proberen patenten te verkrijgen van gewassen als broccoli...... (en geeft het door aan familie, vrienden en bekenden!!) Door omstandigheden ben ik deze petitie vergeten en de consultatie van de EU burgers zou al een paar dagen zijn gesloten, echter de petitie staat nog steeds open ter tekening en dat gebeurt nog steeds op grote schaal (!!), doe dat dan ajb ook, laat het geteisem in Brussel weten dat we onze gezondheid nog steeds uiterst belangrijk vinden en dat de macht van grote bedrijven veel te groot is.... De lobby van grote bedrijven in de politiek is niets anders dan een smerige vorm van corruptie, zoals onlangs weer bleek toen hare VVD kwaadaardigheid Neelie Kroes door de mand viel met haar heimelijke lobby voor Uber in Brussel......** (Uber, je weet wel het smerige bedrijf dat werknemers uitneemt....) Kroes was door de EU uitdrukkelijk verboden te werken voor Uber, echter deze psychopaat had daar lak aan en heeft geprobeerd de Europese Commissie te bewegen, om de taxiwetgeving aan te passen, voorts heeft ze geprobeerd om een strafrechtelijk onderzoek van het Openbaar Ministerie naar het handelen van Uber te beïnvloeden..... Trouwens een groot voorbeeld dat lobbyen en politiek verboden zou moeten worden is het aannemen van een baan door CDA palingtrut Mona Keijzer, die een baan aannam bij EnergieBericht, een lobbyorganisatie voor de fossiele maffia, een overduidelijke connectie met haar portefeuille als staatssecretaris van Economische Zaken en Klimaat...... (het spreekt nog voor haar dat ze zich tegen de achterlijke Coronamaatregelen heeft uitgesproken, waarvoor ze werd ontslagen als staatssecretaris)

In Europe, we have strict regulations on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) – for our safety and transparency. Genetically modified foods have their DNA changed via genetic engineering - a way that does not occur naturally. 

Big chemical companies have convinced the EU Commission to stop labelling GM foods in our supermarkets. There would be no way to know whether we're buying genetically modified food. Our governments still have a chance to make the EU stand up for safe, healthy and transparent food. It's up to us to make sure they do.

But now, big chemical companies have convinced the EU Commission to stop checking and labelling some GMOs. [1, 2] They're trying to increase their profits by getting the "GMO" label off their products. [3] More of us would buy their products without knowing that we're eating GM food.

As a result, farmers would start using more patented seeds that rely on toxic pesticides. Many new GM plants are resistant to pesticides, such as those that are "Roundup ready". This could put the fate of our entire food system directly into the hands of Bayer-Monsanto and other big corporations. Deregulating these GMOs would be a huge step backward for farming communities, people and the environment.

Our national governments need to stand up for safe, healthy, and transparent food. Only a few do at the moment. That's why it's so important that we send a strong message to all our governments and the EU Commission that we want them to prioritise safety and transparency over corporate profits.

Europe, keep checking and labelling GMOs!

Exempting new GMOs from the rules is an industry attempt to divert our money and attention away from the real solutions we need. Agroecology and permacultures can lead Europe toward true sustainability - new GMOs cannot.

Now, the Commission is gauging public opinion for its deregulation plans. It's running a biassed consultation that's framed almost all questions in a way to support deregulation. [4] Alongside this, our national ministers will discuss their positions within the month! This could be our last chance to raise our voices before the EU moves ahead. Europese Commissie (van o.a. de Green Deal) dreigt glyfosaat nog 15 jaar toe te staan

Het Monsanto Tribunaal luidt de noodklok: het lijkt er sterk op dat de Europese Commissie nog eens een vergunning afgeeft voor het kankerverwekkende en DNA aantastende landbouwgif glyfosaat en dat voor 'maar liefst' 15 jaar....... (glyfsaat is het belangrijkste ingrediënt van Roundup) 

Het Tribunaal heeft al 837.000 handtekeningen van EU burgers maar dat is niet genoeg, op 30 september moeten het er minstens 1 miljoen zijn. 

Grootschalige verspreiding van glyfosaat

Sinds glyfosaat op de markt is, begin 70er jaren van de vorige eeuw), is al 70% van de insecten uitgestorven...... Doordat vogels insecten eten is ook de vogelstand sinds de 70er jaren met 30% afgenomen en dan durft men dit toe te schrijven aan het houden van katten, deze leugen gaat zover dat de EU eerder besloot dat katten niet langer vrij mogen rondlopen*, terwijl dezelfde EU keer op keer vergunningen verlengt voor het gebruik van dit levensgevaarlijk gif..... Voorts heeft glyfosaat al aan een fiks aantal mensen het leven gekost, dit vanwege de kankerverwekkende eigenschap van dit smerige gif......

Vergeet niet dat groente en fruit dat is bespoten met dit gif ervoor zorgt dat jij het ook binnenkrijgt, terwijl de meesten van ons al een aardige opstapeling in het lichaam hebben van meerdere soorten landbouwgif en dat moet eindelijk afgelopen zijn.... Het is dan ook bijzonder smerig dat de politici-lobbyisten voor Bayer (de eigenaar van Monsanto) en lobbyisten van Bayer zelf stellen dat de hoeveelheid glyfosaat die je binnenkrijgt zo klein is dat je er geen last van krijgt, echter daarbij verzwijgt dit geteisem die stapeling van meerdere soorten gif in je lichaam......

Als ik het goed begrepen heb is de valsgroene politicus Bas Eickhout nu ook voor een verbod, eerder heeft deze oplichter gekozen voor langer toestaan, moet je nagaan.....?? 

Belachelijk genoeg heeft de EU besloten dat het gebruik van landbouwgif met 50% moet worden gereduceerd, i.p.v. te stellen dat het zo snel mogelijk helemaal afgelopen moet zijn met gif dat insecten en vogels uitroeit en dat de mens ernstige gezondheidsproblemen kan geven, zelfs zo dat er mensen daadwerkelijk overlijden aan deze letterlijke kankertroep

Ook EU politici vormen een volksvertegenwoordiging, wat lullig dan dat ze zich vooral laten zien als bedrijvenvertegenwoordiging..... (één van de belangrijkste redenen om te stoppen met de EU....)

Heb je nog niet getekend, teken dan ajb en geeft het door, we moeten af van gif dat niet alleen dieren maar ook mensen doodt!! Vergeet niet dat ook kinderen deze troep binnenkrijgen en gezien de genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden van Bayer-Monsanto, is de hoeveelheid gif op groenten en fruit nu hoger dan ooit tevoren (door het genetisch manipuleren van zaden kunnen de gewassen uit die zaden enorme hoeveelheden gif verdragen......)

The EU is planning to give the green light for a 15 year renewal of glyphosate. The plans for pesticide reduction announced by the EU Commission are effectively countered by the pesticide industry. Pesticide sales still increase every year, biodiversity is suffering and bees and pollinators are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Only a strong signal from society can change this toxic tide. But a brave attempt to do so could stumble on the threshold of success. Unless... you come in!

 

The EU Citizens' Initiative Save Bees and Farmers demands a phase out of pesticides and a change towards nature-friendly agriculture. If 1 million Europeans sign by September 30th, the EU Commission has to come with proposals. But with 900.000 online and paper signatures, we’re not going to make it. The champagne bottles are already cooled in the Bayer-Monsanto offices.

The Glyphosate saga – failing control in the EU and the US

To protect health and environment, the authorities have set up a system. Bodies like the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in the EU and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US take care of our health and the environment. Or... Do they really?

This system is now exposed as not working. Not for the people, not for the planet. For the pesticide producers, it works perfectly. Almost every product is admitted for sale. How does that work? The agencies don’t do their own studies, they rely on studies provided by the industry. Only these studies. That is because EFSA has adopted a proposal by three BASF employees, the Klimisch Score. All studies must comply with criteria set up by the industry. This was meant to prevent fraud (which is good, see below) but at the same time excludes all independent scientific studies.

EU Citizens’ Initiative on Glyphosate Made a Change

Until recently the Industry studies were secret. That changed after the successful EU Citizens Initiative on Glyposate in 2017. In a very short period, 1.3 million Europeans asked to ban glyphosate. It didn’t lead to a ban, but also not to the 15 years permit that was asked for by Monsanto. Glyphosate got a 5-year permit and that’s why we’re discussing it again now. Another important result was that the EU Commission promised transparency in the process. They said they would make the Industry studies available.

Since they didn’t do that fast enough, some Green politicians started a court case and won. In a landmark verdict the EU Court of Justice decided in 2019 that the studies are part of the authorisation and should therefore be made public. The organisation SumOfUs sent in an Access to Documents request and received the studies. They consulted independent experts and what did they find?

Most Studies Used to Allow Glyphosate Are Not Reliable

Finally, independent scientists could have a look at the studies provided by the glyphosate manufacturers. Two experts from the Institute for Cancer Research from the University of Vienna scrutinized the studies with remarkable results. Their analysis shows that out of 53 industry studies, only 2 can be assessed as scientifically ‘reliable’, when using the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guidelines that are used normally for toxicological studies. 34 are ‘not reliable’ and 17 only ‘partly reliable’ to draw conclusions on the question if glyphosate can cause cancer. Moreover, most studies used the wrong methods and not the methods that would show a relation with cancer.

Their conclusion: based on these studies the EFSA could not conclude that glyphosate is not able to cause cancer. There was no basis to contradict the conclusion of the International Institute on Cancer Research (IARC) that glyphosate probably causes cancer.

This is quite explosive information. Products that cause cancer should not be allowed according to the EU regulations. For this means that the EU authorities should have banned glyphosate already in 2017!

And what do the independent scientific studies tell us?

Industry studies are secret, even for most fellow scientists. This is in stark contrast to the way independent scientists work. Before a study is published in a scientific review, it is controlled by fellow experts who are not involved in the study.

In this overview you see 53 studies by the producers of glyphosate. None of them show damage to DNA, which is a strong indication to cause cancer. Compare this to the 72 independent studies, among which three quarters concludes that glyphosate and its formulations cause damage to DNA. So we can conclude that the methods used by the producers and accepted by EFSA don’t detect carcinogens. The claims of the industry are not ‘science-based’, they are based on quicksand.

EPA Manipulating Pesticide Research

Managers and staff in the Environmental Protection Agency’s in the US tampered with the assessments of dozens of chemicals to make them appear safer, according to 4 scientists who work at the agency. This happened in the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.

The whistleblowers’ job was to identify the potential harms posed by new chemicals. They provided journalists from The Intercept with detailed evidence of pressure within the agency to minimize or remove evidence of potential adverse effects of the chemicals. This included neurological effects, birth defects, and cancer.

Together, the evidence they provided shows a pattern in which the EPA failed to follow the law that oversees chemical regulation. One of the whistleblowers says, ‘Like a lot of us who are in this, we came to work at the EPA because I wanted to preserve the environment for our children’s children. It’s infuriating that I have to push back against managers to do that.’

What’s happening in the glyphosate cancer court cases in the US?

Bayer – Monsanto tried to settle the more than 42,000 court cases on Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (a form of cancer) caused by glyphosate. The company wanted to spend some 10 billion dollars in the settlement. However, by far not all victims agreed. Also, the attempt to stop new cases failed. On May 27th a judge ruled that parts of the plan were ‘clearly unreasonable’.

Following this ruling Bayer announced that they consider to stop selling Roundup products to the public in the US and would only sell it to professional users. The next trial to go ahead is the case of Donnetta Stephens v. Monsanto, set for trial on July 26 in California.

FAO (VN Wereldvoedselorganisatie) werkt samen met gifmengers en gentech bedrijven

Donderde vanmorgen van m'n stoel toen ik een petitie van Pesticide Action Network (PAN) onder ogen kreeg, hieruit blijkt dat de VN Wereldvoedselorganisatie, de FAO, samenwerkt met de lobbyclubs van gifmengers als Bayer-Monsanto en Syngenta, de agrochemische industrie en grote bedrijven die genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden fabriceren (alweer bedrijven als Monsanto en Syngenta). 

Planten uit genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden kunnen grote hoeveelheden gif aan zoals het DNA verstorende en kankerverwekkende glyfosaat..... Daarmee is de groente op je bord in feite zwaar giftig, echter de instanties die gif toestaan op de markt en de bedrijven die dit gif verkopen durven met droge ogen te beweren dat dit geen kwaad kan daar de hoeveelheid gif minimaal zou zijn, een leugen van schandelijke proporties, daar we middels ons voedsel meerdere gifsoorten binnenkrijgen, die zich stapelen in ons lichaam en op de wat langere termijn ernstige klachten kunnen geven zoals het al eerder genoemde kanker..... (ook kunnen deze klachten optreden na een ernstige ziekte, daar het lichaam dan flink is verzwakt....) Je kan  e.e.a. voorkomen door ecologisch geteelde groenten en fruit te eten, echter dat is niet weggelegd voor de grote onderlaag, daar deze groenten en fruit een stuk hoger zijn geprijsd.....

Hoe is het mogelijk dat de FAO samenwerkt met gifmengers, alsof er bijvoorbeeld in arme landen (waarvoor de FAO zich met name inzet) al niet veel te veel gif wordt gebruikt, gif dat hier vaak is verboden, maar wel in het westen wordt gefabriceerd...... 

Gegarandeerd dat de FAO stelt dat we niet anders kunnen en deze giftige technieken nodig hebben in de strijd tegen honger, echter daarvoor is maar een geschikt middel: stoppen met het eten van vlees, daar dit zwaar inefficiënt is en een onnodig groot beslag legt op beschikbare groenten en granen (en op de watervoorraad)*, waarbij nog aangetekend moet worden dat veel van deze groenten worden geteeld in arme landen, zoals soja in Brazilië en soja en mais in een aantal arme Afrikaanse landen........ Overigens komen via import van groenten en fruit van buiten de EU (niet zelden geteeld door Nederlandse landbouwers bijvoorbeeld in Afrika) deze hier verboden gifsoorten toch op ons bord.....

Landbouwgif als glyfosaat en atrazine zorgen voor alarmerende teruggang in vruchtbaarheid van de mens, dit nog naast de kankerverwekkende eigenschappen

In een kort maar krachtig artikel stelt F. William Engdahl dat het grootschalig gebruik van Monsanto's glyfosaat en Syngenta's atrazine niet alleen de oorzaak zijn van kanker en andere ernstige aandoeningen, maar schaden ook nog eens de menselijke voortplanting op een alarmerende manier......

In 1962 schreef zeebioloog Rachel Carlson een boek waarin ze gedetailleerd inging op het gebruik destijds van het uiterst giftige DDT en het effect van dit gif op levende wezens. Sindsdien hebben de grote gifmengers hun les geleerd en weten hoe ze efficiënt de gevaren van het gif dat ze produceren kunnen verdoezelen, o.a. middels een machtige lobby bij een groot aantal regeringen zoals die van de EU en haar lidstaten......

Pogingen om glyfosaat te verbieden in de EU zijn al een paar keer gestrand door de machtige lobby van de grote gifmengers, zelfs GroenLinks EU grofgraaier Bas Eickhout stemde voor het langer toestaan van dit kankerverwekkende en vruchtbaarheidsschadende gif..... 

Volgens Engdahl heeft dit alles te maken met eugenetica, al zo aangehangen door nazi-Duitsland en volgens hem is het zelfs opzet om mensen minder vruchtbaar te maken als wapen tegen de overbevolking, waarbij hij bekende personen, als prins Philip (Groot-Brittannië) aanhaalt, die daar uitlatingen over hebben gedaan. Zo zei deze prins (ha! ha! ha!) ooit dat de menselijke kudde moet worden uitgedund en in een voorwoord van het boek met de titel: 'If I were an Animal' (1986) zei deze flapdrol dat hij het verleidelijk vond om in reïncarnatie te geloven en dat hij dan hoopt terug te komen als een dodelijk virus..........

Henry Kissinger, de vreselijke oorlogsmisdadiger die als Obama volkomen onterecht de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede kreeg heeft tijdens de Nixon en Ford administraties in de VS geopperd dat het verminderen van de wereldbevolking een absolute prioriteit moet zijn daar de groeiende VS bevolking anders met grote tekorten aan grondstoffen e.d. zou komen te zitten.......

Nog zo één: opperploert Bill Gates die opmerkte dat de wereldbevolking (op dat moment 6,8 miljard mensen groot, dit aantal was in april 2019 al gegroeid tot 7,7 miljard mensen) snel zou groeien naar 9 miljard, volgens hem kunnen 'we' als 'we' goed ons best doen met vaccins, volksgezondheid en reproductieve gezondheidszorg dat aantal verminderen met 10 tot 15%........ 

Lees het schrijven van Engdahl en trek je eigen conclusie, zelf vind ik het ver gezocht dat men doelbewust uit is op actief de wereldbevolking te verminderen middels gif, immers daardoor zou ook de elite getroffen kunnen worden, daar gif tegenwoordig overal om ons heen is en zou zelfs op veel plekken in drinkwater zijn te vinden, zoals hij zelf ook schrijft, maar toch je weet maar nooit, de machtigen van de wereld zijn tot alles instaat.......... (neem als voorbeeld nogmaals de uitlatingen van prince Philip, Bill Gates en Henry Kissinger, echter je kan ook bedrijven als Unilever nemen, met een enorme 'duurzaamheidscampagne' verbergt dit bedrijf haar verantwoordelijkheid voor het volpompen van mensen met het uiterst slechte palmolie, dat niet alleen niet duurzaam is, maar ook nog eens schadelijk is voor de gezondheid en zelfs winkelketen Ekoplaza doet hier aan mee, daar veel van haar producten palmolie bevatten...... (er is maar één duurzame vorm van palmolie >> die niet geoogst wordt!!)

I want to share with you something I wrote regarding an alarming research and new book documenting how common agriculture pesticide chemicals, such as the most widely used Roundup with glyphosate and Syngenta’s Atrazine, are having a devastating impact on human fertility. Since the 1962 publication of the book Silent Spring by the courageous American marine biologist, Rachel Carson, detailing the toxic impact of the then-most widely used pesticide, DDT on living creatures, the agrichemical industry has become far more efficient at hiding the dangers in their toxins. Widespread efforts to ban Roundup and glyphosate in the EU were sabotaged by a massive campaign from the pesticide industry led by Monsanto-Bayer. It is easy to think of eugenics, the race purity practiced by the Third Reich as something in the past. Hardly. The same Bill Gates who is pushing radical gene-edited vaccines for covid19 has backed eugenics initiatives including vaccines to reduce population. The most shocking about the piece contained here is that so little notice is taken in mainstream media of the charges.

Will Mankind Be Extinct In a Few Years?

It’s no secret that Bill Gates and the advocates of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 are also devout promoters of human eugenics, the “thinning of the Human Herd” as Britain’s misanthropic Prince Philip once put it. Some such as Joachim Schnellnhuber, climate adviser to the Pope, openly welcome a human population to below one billion as “sustainable.” Now serious research is emerging that one of the most effective reducers of the human population is being spread by so-called “modern scientific agriculture” through the select use of toxic agrochemicals, pesticides deemed safe which are anything but safe.

According to a new book by Dr Shanna Shaw, Count Down, the male sperm count in Western industrial countries, including the EU and USA, is falling at a dramatic rate. Shaw estimates that over the past four decades the average sperm count has dropped by 50% or more. In other words a young male today seeking to have a family has only half the sperm count his grandfather did. Shaw estimates that unless toxic chemical exposures in agriculture and the environment are dramatically altered, we may not have the ability to reproduce naturally much longer and by 2050 most human beings in the industrial countries, including China, will need technological assistance to procreate. ^[i]

Shaw’s book is a further elaboration of a 2017 peer-reviewed scientific paper which Shaw and colleagues published. In the paper, Shaw carefully analyzed a total of 244 estimates of Sperm Concentration and Total Sperm Count (TSC) from 185 studies of 42 935 men who provided semen samples in 1973–2011. What they found was alarming to the extreme, but beyond a few media headlines, no changes of consequence resulted as the powerful agrochemical corporations such as Bayer-Monsanto, Syngenta, DowDuPont (now Corteva) lobbied regulators to ignore the findings.

Shaw found that “Among Unselected Western studies, the mean Sperm Concentration declined, on average, 1.4% per year with an overall decline of 52.4% between 1973 and 2011.” The same group of males, had “an average decline in mean TSC of 1.6% per year and overall decline of 59.3%.” That is a sperm count decline as of a decade ago of more than 59% in men, unselected by fertility, from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. And it continues to decline year by year. ^[ii]

Because of lack of serious support for new studies, updated data is limited. Fifteen years ago, over half of potential sperm donors in Hunan Province, China, met quality standards. Now, only 18% do, a decline blamed on endocrine disrupting chemicals according to one study. A similar fall in sperm count was registered by researchers in Taiwan, as well as a similar result for Israel. Shaw concludes, “male reproductive health, not just semen quality by the way, is in trouble, and this has consequences, not just for the ability to have a child, but it also impacts the health of the man.” She cites as examples, “low sperm count, infertility, testicular cancer, and various general defects. One of them is undescended testicles, another one is a condition where the opening of the urethra is not where it should be…” ^[iii]

Endocrine Disruptors

Swan, today with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, believes the cause is to be found in the huge rise in toxic chemical exposures in recent decades, especially of chemicals known as “endocrine disruptors” or hormone disruptors.  She points to “chemicals that make plastics soft, which are phthalates, or chemicals that make plastics hard like Bisphenol A, or chemicals that are flame retardants, chemicals that are in Teflon, and so on, pesticides...” ^[iv]

The last, pesticides, is the group that should send loud alarm bells ringing because it is proven to get into groundwater and the human food chain. Today the two most widely used pesticides in the world are Bayer-Monsanto’s Roundup containing the probable carcinogen, glyphosate, and Azatrine made by Syngenta, which today is owned by ChemChina.

In 2010 a renowned University of California, Berkeley scientist, Tyrone B. Hayes, professor of integrative biology, led a major study of the effect of Atrazine exposure for frogs. He found that the pesticide, widely used on US corn crops and sugarcane, wreaks havoc with the sex lives of adult male frogs, emasculating three-quarters of them and turning one in 10 into females. He found ,“These male frogs are missing testosterone and all the things that testosterone controls, including sperm.” Moreover Hayes noted that the 10% of frogs exposed to Atrazine that “turn from males into females – something not known to occur under natural conditions in amphibians – can successfully mate with male frogs but, because these females are genetically male, all their offspring are male.” ^[v] Hayes declared, “I believe that the preponderance of the evidence shows atrazine to be a risk to wildlife and humans.”

Atrazine is a potent endocrine disruptor. Atrazine is also the second-most widely used herbicide in the US behind Monsanto’s glyphosate product, Roundup. Despite the evidence, in a controversial ruling the US Environmental Protection Agency, in 2007 ruled that “Atrazine does not adversely affect amphibian sexual development and that no additional testing was warranted.” End of story? Hardly. But in 2004 the EU banned Atrazine saying Syngenta failed to prove its safety in drinking water.

Another agrochemical that has been determined to be an endocrine disruptor is Monsanto’s Roundup with glyphosate. Roundup is the world’s most widely used pesticide, in over 140 countries including Russia and China. Its use on US GMO crops has exploded in recent years as almost 90% of US corn is GMO, and a similar percent of its soybeans. Between 1996 when GMO Monsanto corn and soybeans were authorized in the USA, and 2017, Americans’ exposure to the chemical grew 500 percent. It has been tested in drinking water, cereals in stores and in urine of pregnant women. ^[vi] Almost all meat and poultry is saturated with glyphosate from animal feed.

A recent study carried out in Australia by researchers at Flinders University found that Roundup killed the cells that produce progesterone in women, causing their levels to drop. Glyphosate and Roundup have been “linked to birth defects, reproductive problems and liver disease, and it has been shown to have the potential to harm the DNA of human umbilical cord, placental and embryonic cells.” ^[vii]

In 2015 scientists in Nigeria examined the effects of combined exposure to both glyphosate and Atrazine on rats. They found the combination was even worse with effects on sperm, testosterone synthesis and male reproductive organs.

In 2016 China’s state-owned chemicals giant, ChemChina, bought Syngenta for a colossal $43 billion. At the time ChemChina had distribution rights in China and other Asian countries for Monsanto Roundup as well. On the ChemChina website it lists Atrazine among the herbicides it sells, calling it a “safe and efficient herbicide for corn fields…” ChemChina is also the leading producer of glyphosate for the Chinese agriculture market. ^[viii]

Today China is facing, by its own admission, a major agriculture crisis and is also struggling with ways to insure food security. Reports are that an increased role for GMO crops with Chinese patents will be a central part of a new five year plan which would undoubtedly mean using glyphosate and Atrazine. At the same time the state is increasingly alarmed by the falling birth rate which has not improved despite relaxations on the One Child policy. With Chinese farmers using significant amounts of pesticide chemicals including glyphosate and Atrazine to improve yields,  they are pursuing a disastrous combination that will not only not solve the growing food crisis, but also may destroy the reproductive potential of a major portion of its 890 million  rural population, as well as countless millions of urban citizens. 

Are these dangerous endocrine disrupting agrochemicals allowed worldwide  because of bureaucratic ignorance of the damage caused by glyphosates, Atrazine and other endocrine disrupters on the human reproduction? Is it only because of corporate greed for hyper profits that they exist? A 1975 quote from Henry Kissinger, author of the eugenics document NSSM-200 during the Nixon-Ford era is instructive:  “Depopulation should be the highest priority of foreign policy towards the third world, because the US economy will require large and increasing amounts of minerals from abroad, especially from less developed countries.” And from Bill Gates: “The world today has 6.8 billion people…that’s headed up to about 9 billion.
