Ongelofelijk de enorme hysterie plus hypocrisie na het optreden van Bob Vylan op het meerdaagse muziekfestival Glastonbury in Engeland. De oproep 'Free, Free Palestine' en de hypothetische leus: "Death, death to the IDF", zijn volgens de totaal afhankelijke staatsmedia en commerciële Britse media, plus veel andere westerse media met dezelfde eigenschap, niets anders dan uitingen van antisemitisme, haatspraak en aanzetten tot geweld.... Hetzelfde geldt voor de meeste Britse politici, rechtse denktanks en 'deskundigen'. Waarmee zeker deze media en politici de 2 bandleden demoniseren, terwijl ze al meer dan 20 maanden lang een genocide ofwel zelfs goedpraten met de meer dan schunnige 'reden' dat Israël het recht heeft zich te verdedigen >> blijkbaar ook door geheel openlijk een genocide uit te voeren, dan wel eenvoudigweg te verzwijgen dat Israël een genocide uitvoert in de Gazastrook met het stellen dat Israël in oorlog is met Hamas, alsof het Israëlische leger (IDF) en Hamas twee gelijkwaardige partijen zijn en Israël daarbij de burgers zoveel mogelijk ontziet..... Sterker nog: het stellen dat Israël een genocide uitvoert op de Palestijnen, of zelfs het rondlopen met een T-shirt waarop de Palestijnse vlag is te zien kan je een aanklacht wegens antisemitisme opleveren in zowel Groot-Brittannië als Duitsland >> waarvoor je strafrechtelijk kan worden vervolgd.....

Dan was er nog een tweede band, te weten >> Kneecap, een trio uit Noord-Ierland dat al bekend stond om hun openlijke uitspraken tegen de Israëlische genocide, waar dat woord zoals gezegd al genoeg is om door de regering Starmer en de reguliere Britse media voor antisemiet te worden uitgemaakt....

De IDF, ofwel de 'Israel Defense Forces' is met het leger van de VS het meest moderne leger ter wereld en de notie dat dit leger aangevallen zou kunnen worden op grond van een leus tijdens een muziekfestival, een leus die meer een symbolische, hypothetische leus is, is te dom voor woorden, immers hoe ongelofelijk leeg in je bol moet je zijn als je die leus letterlijk opvat als zou je op grond daarvan dat leger moeten aanvallen.... Terwijl de genocide die de IDF uitvoert alles behalve symbolisch dan wel hypothetisch is, zo hebben we nu al bijna 21 maanden lang openlijk kunnen zien!! 

Als men de IDF al aanvalt is dat te danken aan de enorme agressie van dit fascistische psychopatenleger, ten eerste de genocide die dit leger van monsters uitvoert op de Palestijnen en daarnaast ten tweede, derde, vierde en vijfde: het oorlogvoeren tegen Jemen, Libanon, Syrië en Iran.... En ten slotte: wie het Israëlische leger aanvalt heeft voor 99% kans om zelf om het leven te komen!! Zelfs het uit pure frustratie simpel gooien van een steen naar een IDF-militair of legervoertuig kan je een kogel in het hoofd kosten, ook als je maar 15 jaar oud bent.....

De Britse premier Starmer zei over de 'omstreden uitlatingen' tijdens het optreden van Bob Vylan: “There is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech.....” Geen excuus?? Hoeveel meer weerloze Palestijnse mensen en hun kinderen moet dat genocidale leger van psychopathische moordenaars dan nog maken, voordat je er een opmerking over mag maken Starmer, enorme schoft??!!! Starmer heeft meermaals laten weten dat Israël het recht heeft om de Palestijnen voedsel, water en medicijnen te onthouden wat hij verwoord als: "Israël heeft het recht zich te verdedigen...." Het valt me nog mee dat er intussen geen mensen zijn die Starmer openlijk dood wensen..... (hoewel dat onder de Palestijnen in en buiten het bezette Palestina wel anders zal zijn)

En dan te bedenken dat Groot-Brittannië Israël bij de door dat gestolen land uitgevoerde genocide (die nog steeds doorgaat, dag in dag uit) niet alleen politiek steunt, maar ook militair, waarvoor zeker Starmer, zijn minister van defensie Healey en zijn minister van buitenlandse zaken Lammy, door het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) moeten worden vervolgd voor 'zware' medeplichtigheid aan genocide!!

Schandelijk te horen dat de leiding van muziekfestival Glastonbury zo laf was om de uitlatingen tijdens het optreden van Bob Vylan als ongewenst te bestempelen. Alsof die leiding niet over meer dan voldoende geld beschikt om een rechtszaak over dit optreden te kunnen winnen. Nog zo'n stel laffe geldwolven: de organisatoren van andere Europese festivals die de beide bands in de programmering hadden, hebben Bob Vylan uit die programmering gehaald.... Walgelijk en schunnig!! 

Het is wel duidelijk: het hypocriete westen tilt veel zwaarder aan de terechte woorden van Bob Vylan en Kneecap, dan aan een al bijna 21 maanden voortgaande genocide waarin naar grote waarschijnlijkheid meer dan 300.000 Palestijnse mensen werden vermoord, waarvan bijna de helft bestaat uit kinderen..... Nee, men neemt al bijna 21 maanden lang bijna elke 3 weken nieuwe sancties tegen Rusland en dat voor 99% op basis van leugens, terwijl een al bijna 21 maanden lang durende openlijk uitgevoerde genocide door de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël zelfs niet één sanctie van het westen heeft opgeleverd!!!

Is a Glastonbury Chant the Real Problem, or Israel’s Genocidal Violence in Gaza?

Israel, Starmer’s Government and the Media Are Fomenting a Moral Panic

Keir Starmer expressed predictable outrage at the weekend that the BBC had inadvertently broadcast punk band Bob Vylan leading crowds at Glastonbury in a chant of “Death to the IDF”—the so-called “Israel Defence Forces” that have been responsible for slaughtering many tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza over the past 21 months.

He called the chant “appalling hate speech”—apparently unaware that there are far worse crimes than hating soldiers carrying out the mass slaughter of children. Those worse things, of course, include slaughtering children en masse.

The BBC apologised, calling the band’s comments “deeply offensive”—more offensive, apparently, than Israel bombing and starving the children of Gaza.

Glastonbury’s organisers condemned the chant, saying there was no space for “hate speech or antisemitism”—apparently assuming, wrongly, that all Jews identify not just with the state of Israel but with an Israeli military widely accused by genocide experts of committing genocidal violence in Gaza.

Police are investigating Bob Vylan, a musical duo, to see whether they have committed a criminal offence, or possibly a terrorist one. As far as we know, the same police are doing nothing to investigate some 10 British citizens known to have travelled abroad to join the Israeli military, the IDF, committing the Gaza genocide.

On Sunday, the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire grilled Starmer’s health secretary, Wes Streeting, on remarks from the Israeli embassy in London condemning what it termed “the normalisation of extremist language” and the “glorification of violence” at Glastonbury.

Unexpectedly, Streeting avoided jumping whole-heartedly on the media outrage band-wagon, led by the Mail on Sunday, whose front page demanded the arrest of the two band members for what the paper wrongly described as a chant demanding “Death to Israelis”. The Mail, apparently, believes that all Israelis, presumably including the country’s children, are currently serving in the Israeli military.

There are four important points to make about the interview between Derbyshire and Streeting:

1. The Israeli embassy in London, like the Israeli government it represents, has precisely no concerns about the “glorification of violence” when Israel is doing either the glorifying or the violence. Israel is currently celebrating its “success” in slaughtering and maiming hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, including huge numbers of children; attacks by its soldiers and state-backed Jewish settler militias on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank; its eradication of whole communities in Lebanon; and its bombing of residential tower blocks across Tehran, killing many hundreds.

Violence has been Israel’s signature policy for the past 21 months—and long before that. Israel has revelled in the carnage it has inflicted on populations across the region.

In a post on social media, the Israeli embassy additionally argued of Bob Vylan’s chant: “When speech crosses into incitement, hatred, and advocacy of ethnic cleansing, it must be called out—especially when amplified by public figures on prominent platforms.”

And yet public figures from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to British prime minister Keir Starmer have incited against the Palestinians, with Netanyahu comparing them to “Amalek”, a people the Israelites were commanded by God to exterminate, and Starmer terming the wholesale starvation of the people of Gaza “self-defence”.

Israeli officials from Netanyahu down have advocated the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. And, even more seriously, Israel has not just threatened but repeatedly carried out the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians under its belligerent rule.

2. It is beyond ridiculous for the BBC to echo the Israeli government in prioritising a harsh crackdown on words at Glastonbury "glorifying violence" towards Israeli soldiers ahead of the actual violence of genocide being committed by those Israel soldiers.

The BBC has avoided criticising the Israeli government for its actual violence—its bombing and active starvation of Palestinian civilians—and the Starmer government for colluding in that violence, or what the International Court of Justice termed more than a year ago a “plausible” genocide by Israel.

As a recent report by the Centre for Media Monitoring confirmed, the BBC has dramatically skewed its language to present Israel, the aggressor, in a more favourable light than the victim, the Palestinians of Gaza. The BBC’s own whistleblowing journalists have warned that the state broadcaster has all but banned the use of the word “genocide”, even by experts on the matter.

By arming Israel, by organising spy flights over Gaza from RAF base Akrotiri on Cyprus, and by providing diplomatic cover, Starmer has effectively glorified Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian children in the enclave. Bob Vylan’s chants of “Death to the IDF” have a far more dangerous counterpart in Starmer’s recital of Israel’s “right to defend itself” when that “defence” involves Israel mercilessly starving Gaza’s population of food, water and power.

Bob Vylan are a punk band; Starmer is the British prime minister, the man who directs Britain’s foreign policy and directs its army.

No one, least of all the BBC, has held Israeli or British officials accountable not just for glorifying violence but for actually carrying it out on an industrial scale for nearly two years.

But the BBC is suddenly interested in holding to account two punk musicians for leading a chant—one that made a symbolic, hypothetical threat of violence—against an Israeli military carrying out the ultimate form of violence, an actual genocide. In a serious media, Israel’s supposed “concerns” about the glorification of violence and extremist language would be laughed off the stage rather than respectfully aired.

3. Wes Streeting is being congratulated and condemned in equal measure on social media for refusing to be drawn into the Mail and BBC’s confected outrage. “I’d say to the Israeli embassy, get your own house in order,” he responded to Derbyshire. But hang on a minute. Streeting’s resistance to Derbyshire’s line of questioning was perhaps unexpected. But it also, let us not forget, serves the interests of both the Starmer and Israeli governments.

Streeting’s insistence that Israel “get its house in order” had, as he made clear, nothing to do with its 21-month slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. Starmer is still defining the Gaza genocide as Israel’s supposed “right to defend itself”. In responding to Derbyshire, Streeting expressed concern only at what he called violent “settler attacks” in the West Bank. He said the Israeli embassy needed to “get your own house in order in terms of the conduct of your own citizens and the settlers in the West Bank”.

This was intended purely as deflection, designed to serve Starmer and Israel, the West’s key  client state in the oil-rich Middle East. It benefits the UK government to make an issue of West Bank settler attacks—and present them as disorganised, random violence by individual extremists that the Israeli government is not responsible for but needs to get a firmer grip on.

By highlighting problems in the West Bank, the Starmer government can avoid addressing the genocide in Gaza and the Israeli state’s clear responsibility for that genocide. Which is precisely why in recent weeks Britain has made so much noise about imposing feeble penalties on a handful of extremist settlers and two fascist ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government that represent those settlers.

Starmer and Streeting’s prioritising of Israel’s West Bank violence over Israel’s Gaza violence is a switch and bait twice over.

Most of the violence in the West Bank is not coming from settler extremists, even though they are the ones being punished by the UK. It is coming from the Israeli military, which has bulldozed thousands of homes there over the past year, driving 40,000 Palestinians off their lands.

Further, settler violence is not random. It is coordinated with Israeli field commanders, many of them settlers themselves, to uproot Palestinians so that Israel can move in Jewish settlers to colonise the land—or, in the words of successive Israeli governments, “Judaise” it.

None of this is new either. Israel has engineered and imposed a violent, apartheid system on Palestinians for decades to make life unbearable and encourage them to leave their homeland.

Second, Glastonbury’s anger-fuelled chant against the IDF was not primarily motivated by Israel’s violent actions in the West Bank. It was against the Israeli military for committing a genocide in Gaza, which the British government has been supporting. Streeting’s aim was to drag the debate on to safer territory for him and Starmer: that Britain needs to deal not with a genocide in Gaza but with a handful of violent loons in the West Bank.

Even in criticising the Israeli government for not doing enough to tackle settler violence, Streeting is still operating within the confines of a public discourse dictated by Israel, which prefers any criticism to be directed at individuals not at the Israeli state behind those individuals.

4. The BBC, the Starmer government and the Israel lobby are all delighted to play their part in this game of deflection and deception because these kinds of moral panics obscure the real issue: that all these parties are actively colluding in Israel's genocide in Gaza. While the media and government can now have a long backwards and forwards about whether criticism of Israel's genocidal army needs to be defined in law as a criminal offence or "terrorism", Israel will get a free pass to continue with the real terrorism: a genocide in Gaza.

Famously, the black civil rights fighter Malcolm X observed of the role of the media: “They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. … If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” Sixty years on, nothing has changed.

Westerse berichtgeving over Oekraïne vs. Gazastrook: word wakker en laat je niet langer manipuleren door de msm

De regelmatige bezoeker van mijn blog weet dat ik nogal de pest heb (om het nog voorzichtig uit te drukken) aan de reguliere westerse (massa-) media, bijna overal aangeduid als mainstream media >> msm. Zie wat Wikipedia daarover zegt:

In de journalistiek zijn de mainstream media de traditionele massamedia die het grote publiek voorzien van informatie en daarbij voornamelijk de algemeen heersende opvattingen uitdragen en vormen. Dit is niet alleen in het belang van de bestendiging van hun enorme kapitalen, maar ook van hun aandelenportefeuilles, zoals aandelen in: -de farmaceutische maffia (een epidemie is een enorm verdienmodel), -de bouwmaffia en daaraan gerelateerd het huizenbezit (woningnood is een enorm verdienmodel), -de wapenindustrie (oorlog is een enorm verdienmodel: dus belang bij zoveel mogelijk oorlog), -de fossiele industrie (zoals ons koningshuis grootaandeelhouder is van Koninklijke Shell >> de luchtvervuiling is een enorm verdienmodel) en tot slot aandelen in -de financiële sector.....

Hoe is het mogelijk dat bijna niemand is het westen zich verwondert over het feit dat de westerse msm allemaal op dezelfde manier berichten over Oekraïne, ja zelfs op zo'n manier dat je moet spreken van hersenspoelen en dat diezelfde reguliere westerse media zoveel mogelijk zwijgen over wat Israël uitvoert in de Gazastrook >> intussen meer dan 37.500 doden, waar nog vele duizenden vermoorde Palestijnen onder het puin liggen; extra schunnig feit: onder de doden ruim meer dan 16.000 kinderen.... (puin dat deels al is gebulldozerd door het psychopathisch moordende Israëlische leger, ofwel daar nog doden onder terugvinden is vrijwel onmogelijk.....)

Wat betreft scholen nog het volgende: alle universiteiten en hoge scholen in de Gazastrook zijn vernietigd door het psychopaten leger van Israël.... 

Jonathan Cook heeft een artikel geschreven over deze hersenspoeling van de burgers via de msm. Daarbij gebruikt hij twee voorvallen van de laatste tijd: de aanval op een school in de Gazastrook door het nazi-leger van Israël (IDF) en de raket die terechtkwam op een kinderziekenhuis in Kiev. Lees wat hij daarover zegt, al moet ik wel opmerken dat hij vergeten is te vermelden dat wanneer er echt een Russische kruisraket zou zijn terechtgekomen op dat Oekraïense kinderziekenhuis, er geen steen meer op de ander had gestaan. Ofwel de conclusie kan bijna niet anders zijn dan dat hier een luchtverdedigingsraket van het Oekraïense leger op is terechtgekomen. Maar nogmaals: lees wat Cook daar verder over zegt. 

Overigens werd vanmiddag op WDR 5 gemeld dat het in Oekraïne zou gaan om een ziekenhuis voor kankerbehandeling, maar zoals je begrijpt >> een kinderziekenhuis dat voor een deel in puin ligt doet het beter op de voorpagina of als eerste onderwerp in het nieuws of actualiteitenrubriek dan een kankerziekenhuis..... . Ook nu weer: veel aandacht voor dat ziekenhuis terwijl er met geen woord werd gesproken over de vele doden die nu weer zijn te betreuren in de Gazastrook, integendeel: weer werd er op de terreur van Hamas gewezen, terwijl Israël al negen maanden lang een genocide uitvoert op het Palestijnse volk dat gevangen zit in een getto, 'op z'n best te vergelijken' met het getto van Warschau tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.... 

De staatsradiozendgemachtigde NOS had vanmorgen een correspondent die bij dat Oekraïense 'kinderziekenhuis' sprak met een kind dat 'speciaal naar dat ziekenhuis was gekomen voor een behandeling' en ik neem aan dat hij ook sprak met anderen die daar aanwezig waren..... Ik kan dergelijke doorzichtige zogenaamd emotionele propaganda niet meer aanhoren en zoek dan een andere radiozender. Uiteraard hoor je nooit een correspondent van de NOS die mensen interviewt die wanhopig zijn omdat hun naasten die in een ziekenhuis lagen onder het puin zijn verdwenen, of de zoveelste vader die wanhopig in het puin van zijn huis met zijn blote handen huilend naar zijn kinderen en vrouw zoekt.....

Als je wat Hamas doet aanduidt als 'terreur', hoe moet je dan de genocide noemen die het psychopathisch moordende Israëlische uitvoert in de Gazastrook, één grote openluchtgevangenis??!!! In Duitsland zou ik vanwege het voorgaande beschuldigd worden van antisemitisme, alsof niet elk land dat als Israël zo fascistisch, genocidaal moorddadig omgaat met een minderheid aan de paal zou moeten worden genageld!! (voor veel minder worden landen, die niet westers welgevallig zijn, wel aan de openbare paal genageld en dat niet zelden op basis van heel smerige leugens, waar op basis daarvan door het westen zelfs met grote regelmaat sancties worden ingesteld tegen die landen....)

Zoals gezegd: er is een groot verschil in westerse (msm) berichtgeving als het gaat om Israël en Oekraïne, al moet daarbij worden opgemerkt dat er ook een heel groot verschil is in de berichtgeving over Oekraïne, gezien vanuit westers en Russisch perspectief, hetzelfde geldt uiteraard voor wat er in de Gazastrook gebeurt, veel meer aandacht voor die arme zionisten in Israël dan voor NB een genocide in uitvoering op het Palestijnse volk...... Opvallend ook dat je zowel de Israëlische regering als de Oekraïense junta beiden kan aanmerken als fascistisch, ofwel fascisten die worden gesteund door het westen!!

Zo moet je bij dit alles niet vergeten dat vanaf de bewezen door de VS (CIA) georganiseerde, geregisseerde en met 5 miljard dollar gefinancierde opstand en coup in Oekraïne van respectievelijk 2013 en 2014, er grote massamoorden zijn uitgevoerd op de etnisch Russische minderheid in dat land en dat vanaf dat laatst genoemde jaar de afgescheiden staatjes in het oosten van Oekraïne continu zijn gebombardeerd door het nazi-leger van Oekraïne, iets waar de westerse msm weinig of niets over hebben gepubliceerd, alsof dat de normaalste zaak van de wereld was en het niet ging om ernstige oorlogsmisdaden.....  

Onder andere de Oekraïense junta onder Porosjenko en onder Zelensky hebben zelfs opgeroepen alle etnische Russen en hun kinderen in het land te vermoorden, ofwel een regelrechte oproep tot genocide!!! Ook dat is als de al uitgevoerde massamoorden op etnische Russen angstvallig uit de reguliere westerse media gehouden!! Daarbij is het een feit dat de meeste westerse politici zich laten leiden door wat de msm aan louter propaganda brengen over zaken als de NAVO-oorlog tegen Rusland, een oorlog die in Oekraïne wordt uitgevochten.... En ook hier weer een vergelijking met wat er in de Gazastrook gebeurt, meerdere Israëlische politici hebben gezegd dat men alle Palestijnen zou moeten vermoorden, ofwel een oproep tot genocide, al wordt die nu daadwerkelijk uitgevoerd.... Waar Rusland ervoor heeft gezorgd dat er een eind is gekomen aan de massamoorden op etnische Russen in Oekraïne..... 

Het is dan ook een illusie om te denken dat in het westen de politiek werkelijk aan de touwen trekt en zich niet laat leiden door wat de media en de geheime diensten aan 'nieuws' brengen, media en geheime diensten die allang bekend staan om hun smerige leugens..... Ook daarom is het niet te filmen dat vrijwel iedereen in het westen maar klakkeloos aanneemt dat de media en geheime diensten de waarheid vertellen, wat overigens ook geldt voor de enorme leugens die denktanks en grote bedrijven over ons en onze politici uitstorten...

Why the news media's job is to groom us

Large numbers of Palestinians and Ukrainians were killed in missile strikes days apart. The media's differing treatment of these comparable events is the clue to what the media's really there to do

When all we have to rely on in understanding our relationship to the news media is the media’s self-proclaimed assessment of its own role, maybe it is no surprise that most of us assume the West’s “free press” is a force for good: the bedrock of democracy, the touchstone of a superior western civilisation.

The more idealistic among us think of the news media as something akin to a public service. The more cynical of us think of it as a competitive marketplace in information and commentary, one in which ugly agendas are often in evidence but truth ultimately prevails.

Both views are fanciful. The reality is far, far darker – and I speak as someone who worked for many years in the Guardian and Observer newsrooms, widely seen as the West’s most progressive newspapers.

As readers, we don’t, as we imagine, “consume” news. Rather, the news consumes us. Or put another way, the media uses the news to groom us, its audience. Properly understood, the relationship is one of abuser and abused.

Sounds like a paranoid conspiracy theory?

In fact, just such an argument was set out many years ago – in more academic fashion – in Noam Chomsky and Ed Herman’s book Manufacturing Consent.

If you have never heard of the book, there may be a reason. The media don’t want you reading it.

When I worked at the Guardian, there was no figure more reviled in the newsroom by senior editors than Noam Chomsky. As young journalists, we were warned off reading him. How might we react were we to start thinking more deeply about the role of the media, or begin testing the limits of what we were allowed to report and say?

Chomsky and Herman’s Propaganda Model explains in detail how western publics are “brainwashed under freedom” by a media driven by hidden corporate and state interests. Those interests can be concealed only because the media decides what counts as news and frames how we understand events.

Its chief tools are misdirection and omission – and, in extremis, outright deception.

Tribal camps

The Propaganda Model acknowledges that competition is permitted in the news media. But only of a narrow, superficial kind, meant to divide us more usefully into tribal, ideological camps – defined as the left and the right.

Those camps are there to keep us imagining that we enjoy a plurality of ideas, that we are in charge of our response to events, that we elect governments – just as we enjoy a choice between watching the BBC and Fox News.

But our herding into oppositional camps isn’t really about choice. The camps are there to keep us divided, so we can be more easily manipulated and ruled. They are there to obscure from us the deeper reality that the state-corporate media is the public relations arm of an establishment that needs us weak.

To survive, the western power establishment has to engineer two related kinds of popular endorsement:

First, we must consent to the idea that the West has an inalienable right to control the Earth’s resources, even at the cost of committing terrible crimes both against the rest of humanity, such as the current genocide in Gaza, and against other species, as we wreck the natural world in our pursuit of impossible, endless economic growth on a finite planet.

And second, we must consent to the idea that the richest and most powerful elites in the West have an inalienable right to cream off most of the profits from this industrialised rape of our only home.

The media rarely identifies this wasteful, greed system, so normalised has it become. But when given a name, it is called capitalism. It emerges from the shadows only when the media need to confront and ridicule a bogeyman caricature of its main ideological rival, socialism.

Immersed in propaganda

The news media have been fantastically successful at making a system of suicidal resource extraction designed to enrich a tiny number of billionaires seem entirely normal to their audiences. Which is why those same billionaires are as keen to own the news media as they are to own politicians. In fact, gain ownership of the media and you own the political class too. It is the ultimate two-for-one offer.

No politician can afford to take on key state-corporate interests, or the media that veils those interests – as Jeremy Corbyn soon found out in the UK a few years back.

I have spent the past 15 years or more trying to highlight to readers the true nature of our relationship to the media – the groomer and groomed – using the media’s coverage of major news events as a practical peg on which to hang my analysis. Talking about the abusive relationship purely in the abstract is likely to persuade few, given how deeply we are immersed in propaganda.

Understanding how the media carries out its day-to-day switch and baits, its omissions, deceptions and misdirections, is the key to beginning the process of freeing our minds. If you look to the state-corporate media for guidance, you are already in its clutches. You are already a victim – a victim of your own suffocating ignorance, of your own self-sabotage, of your own death wish.

Different narratives

But rarely do we have examples of propaganda so flagrant from our “free press” that it is hard for readers not to notice them. This week the state-corporate media made my job a little easier. Over the past few days, it has reported on two closely comparable events that it framed in entirely different ways. Ways that all too clearly serve state-corporate interests.

The first such event was an Israeli air strike last Saturday on a school in Gaza, where Palestinian civilians, including children, had been sheltering from months of a rampaging Israeli military that has slaughtered many tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroyed most of the enclave’s homes and infrastructure.

The massive scale of death and destruction in Gaza has forced the World Court to put Israel on trial for genocide – not that you would know from the media coverage. The genocide case against Israel has been largely disappeared down the memory hole.

The second event, on Monday, was a Russian air strike on a hospital in Kyiv. It was part of a wave of attacks on Ukrainian targets that day that killed 36 Ukrainians.

Let us note that on a typical day in Gaza, at least 150 Palestinians are killed by Israel. That has been happening day after day for nine months. And the death toll is almost certainly a massive under-estimate. In decimated Gaza, unlike Ukraine, officials long ago lost the ability to count their dead.

Let us note too that, despite huge numbers of Palestinian women and children being killed each day by Israeli missiles, the news media largely stopped covering the carnage in Gaza months ago. The BBC’s main evening news barely reports it.

The fact alone that the killing of 36 Ukrainian civilians attracted so much attention and concern from the western media, in a war that’s more than two years old, when there is a far larger daily death toll of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, which our governments have been directly aiding, and the slaughter is of more recent origin, is telling in and of itself.

So how did our most trusted and progressive media outlets report these comparable events, in Gaza and Ukraine?

The headlines tell much of the story.

In an all-too-familiar pattern, the BBC shouted from the rooftops: “At least 20 dead after ‘massive’ Russian missile attack on Ukraine cities”. It named Russia as responsible for killing Ukrainians, and did so even when there was still some debate about whether Russian missiles or Ukrainian air-defence missiles had caused the destruction.

Meanwhile, the BBC carefully avoided identifying Israel as the party that killed those in Gaza sheltering from its bombs, even though Israel long ago stopped pretending that feeble Palestinian rockets could cause damage on such a scale. The headline read: “Air strike on Gaza school kills at least 13 people.”

The Guardian’s headlines were even more revealing.

The paper did, at least, identify Israel as responsible for the killing: “Israeli strike on Gaza school kills 16, say Palestinian officials.”

However, the dry, matter-of-fact language about those Palestinian deaths, the suggestion that the deaths were only a claim, and the attribution of that claim to “Palestinian officials” (with the now widely accepted implication that those officials can’t be trusted) was intended to steer the emotional response of readers. They would be left cold and indifferent.

The framing was clear: this was just another, routine day in Gaza. No need to be overly invested in Palestinian suffering.

Contrast that with the entirely different tone the Guardian struck in its headlines on the cover story (below) of the attack on Ukraine: “‘No words for this’: horror over Russian bombing of Kyiv children’s hospital.” The subhead reads: “Witnesses express shock and revulsion after deadly missile strike on Ukraine’s largest paediatric clinic.”

The emphasis is on “horror”, “shock”, “revulsion”. “No words”, we are told, can convey the savagery of this atrocity. The headline’s emphasis is on the targeting of “children” with a “deadly missile”.      

All of which, of course, could be equally said about the horror of Israel’s targeting of Palestinian children day-in, day-out. But, of course, isn’t.

Swaying readers

If this isn’t convincing enough, take another example of the Guardian’s treatment (below) of comparable events in Gaza and Ukraine. Here is how the paper reported Israel destroying Gaza’s largest hospital back in November, when such actions had not yet become routine, as they are now, and when it had killed far larger numbers of civilians at the hospital in Gaza than Russia did in Ukraine.

The headline reads clinically: “IDF says it has entered Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital in ‘targeted’ operation against Hamas.”

The Guardian readily repeats the Israeli military’s terminology, conferring legitimacy on the carnage at al-Shifa hospital as a “targeted operation”. The fact that patients and medical personnel were the main victims is obscured by the Guardian’s repeating of the Israel’s claim that it was simply “targeting Hamas” – just as Israel’s wanton destruction of Gaza has supposedly been about “eliminating Hamas”, even as Hamas grows stronger.

Apparently there is no “horror, “shock” or “revulsion” at the Guardian over the destruction and killing spree at Gaza’s largest hospital. Such sentiments are reserved for Ukraine.

    The same differences are illustrated in the US “liberal” media, as Alan MacLeod noted on X.

A day after Russia’s strike on Ukraine, Israel was attacking another school shelter in Gaza. The New York Times made it clear how differently readers were supposed to feel about these similar events.

Headline: “At Least 25 Reported Killed in Strike on School Building in Southern Gaza.”

Note the passive, uncertain treatment – this was, after all, only a report. Note too that the perpetrator, Israel, remains unidentified.

Headline: “Russia Strikes Children’s Hospital in Deadly Barrage Across Ukraine.”

In stark contrast, Russia is clearly identified as the perpetrator, the active voice is used to describe its crime, and once again emotional descriptors – “deadly” – can be readily deployed to sway readers into an emotional response.

Headlines and photos are the part of a story that almost every reader sees. Which is why their role in framing our understanding events is so important. They are the print media’s main means of propagandising us.

Skewed priorities

Broadcast media like the BBC work slightly differently in manipulating our responses.

Running orders – the channel’s way to signal its news priorities – are important, as are the emotional reactions of anchors and reporters. Just think of the way Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Moscow correspondent, half-stifles a sneer every time he mentions Vladimir Putin by name, or how he struggles to suppress a scoff at any of the Russian president’s statements. Then try to imagine any BBC reporter being allowed to do the same with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, let alone British leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Another way to make us invested in some events but not others is by concentrating on what are called “human-interest” stories, taking ordinary individuals and making their troubles and suffering the focus of a piece rather than the usual talking heads.

The BBC evening news, for example, has largely stopped reporting on Gaza’s suffering. When it does, reports occur briefly and late in the running order and they usually cover little more than the dry facts. Human-interest stories have been rare.

The BBC broke with that trend twice on Tuesday’s News at Ten – in the midst of Israel twice targeting schools that were supposed to be offering shelter to Palestinians driven from their homes by Israeli bombs.

Did the BBC tell the stories of the victims of those air strikes? No, those attacks received the most minimal coverage.

Upgrade to paid

The first human-interest story concerned a Ukrainian mother, shown desperately searching for her child in the aftermath of the attack on the Kyiv hospital the previous day, as well as their later reunion.

The second human-interest story, this one from Gaza, didn’t concern any of the many victims of the Israeli attacks on school-shelters. It focused instead – and at great length – on a Palestinian man beaten in Gaza for opposing Hamas rule.

In other words, not only did the BBC consider the day-old deaths of Ukrainians far more important news than Israel's killing that day of 29 Palestinian civilians, but it also considered the beating of a man by Hamas as a bigger news priority too.

When we are encouraged to care about Palestinians, it is only when the odd one is being brutalised by other Palestinians, not when millions of them are being brutalised by their occupier, Israel, in their ghetto-prisons.

The pattern to this skewing of news priorities, the constant distorted framing of events is the clue to how we should decipher what the media is trying to achieve, what it is there to do.

BBC news coverage all too often looks like it is exploiting any opportunity to highlight violence by Russia, in strict accordance with British foreign policy objectives. Equally, it all too often looks like the BBC is engineering pretexts to ignore or downplay violence by Israel, again in strict accordance with British foreign policy objectives.

Ukraine is a key battleground for the West in its battle for global “full-spectrum dominance”, Washington’s central foreign policy strategy in which it positions itself so that no other great power, such as Russia and China, can challenge its control over the planet’s resources. The US and its western allies are ready to risk an entirely unnecessary nuclear war, it seems, to win that battle.

Israel, meanwhile, a colonial fortress-state implanted by the West into the oil-rich Middle East, is a critically important ally in realising Washington’s dominance in its region. The Palestinians are the fly in the ointment – and like a fly, they can be swatted away with utter indifference and impunity.

With this as our framework, we can understand why the BBC and other media fail so systematically to fulfil their self-professed remits to reporting objectively and disinterestedly, and fail to scrutinise and hold power to account – unless it is the power of an Official Enemy.

The truth is the BBC, the Guardian and the rest are nothing more than conduits of state-corporate propaganda, masquerading as news outlets.

Until we grasp that, they will continue grooming us.
