Wereld Octopus Dag en een dystopische wereld, de intelligentie van octopussen ('octopada') en wat ons menselijk maakt

Vandaag is het Wereld Octopus Dag, onderdeel van de International Cephalopod Awareness Days, die vandaag beginnen met zoals gezegd die speciale dag voor octopussen en het geheel duurt tot en met 12 oktober 2022. 

Octopussen (octopada) of zoals we in Nederland zeggen inktvissen, zijn uiterst intelligente dieren die in een heel ver verleden verwant waren aan de mens. Deze wonderlijk mooie dieren hebben maar liefst 9 hersenen, waaronder 1 voor elk van de 8 armen (vaak weggezet als tentakels >> wat mij betreft een rot woord), daarnaast bezit het dier 3 harten. Dit prachtige dier kan zich perfect camoufleren waarbij het zo van kleur kan veranderen dat het opgaat in de achtergrond.

Octopussen sieren hun 'huis' op met diverse gevonden zaken, dus ook wat dat betreft lijken ze sterk op de mens, er is geen ander dier dan de mens en de octopus die dit gedrag vertoont!!  

Voorts kunnen octopussen uit de aquaria klimmen als deze niet zijn afgesloten en zelfs uit een laboratorium ontsnappen als daar bijvoorbeeld ook maar een zeer nauwe afvoer ligt die naar zee leidt.... 

Het is dan ook belachelijk dat de mens deze mooie en intelligente dieren nog steeds eet, waarbij de dieren worden doodgelagen om de 'inkt' uit het arme dier te verwijderen...... Terecht dan ook dat PETA een petitie heeft opgesteld tegen de plannen in Spanje  (Gran Canaria) om deze dieren intensief te houden als waren het kippen in een megastal, uiteraard in veel te kleine tanks zoals de mens dat pleegt te doen met de intensieve viskweek..... In deze kweek waar deze arme dieren ook nog eens antibiotica wordt gevoerd, daar anders ziekten een eind maken aan het leven van die dieren, logisch daar het intensief houden van dieren onherroepelijk leidt tot besmettelijke ziekten, zie bijvoorbeeld de vogelgriep, q-koorts, varkenpest, of mond- en klauwzeer...... Het gaat om zeveel antibiotica dat het laatst werkend antibioticum is beperkt tot nog één zo'n middel om de mens te redden, een antibioticum dat echter nu al aan dieren wordt gevoerd........

Besmettelijke dierziekten waarvoor wereldwijd al honderden miljoenen dieren zijn vermoord...... In Nederland zijn sinds oktober 2021 al meer dan 5 miljoen kippen 'geruimd' (lees: volkomen zinloos vermoord!!) vanwege de volgelgriep en dat daar men weigert deze dieren te vaccineren daar dat de export van vlees bemoeilijkt...... In Nederland worden op jaarbasis 600 miljoen dieren gehouden (grootgemarteld) in de intensieve veehouderij en voor het grootste deel ook hier vermoord .......

Hieronder vind je eerst een artikel en video van The Chris Hedges Report, waarin Hedges Ray Nayler interviewt over zijn boek over inktvissen >> 'The Mountain in the Sea' waarin hij onder meer ingaat op de manier waarop de mens denkt om te kunnen gaan met dieren (als consumptie-artikel; Ap), waarin Nayler onder andere stelt dat de mens al amper of geen empathie heeft met andere mensen, laat staan met dieren..... 

Terwijl de octopus zoals gezegd in veel opzichten lijkt op de mens, zien de meeste mensen de octopus als een monster (niet in de laatste plaats door sensatie boeken waarin het dier als monster wordt afgeschilderd), terwijl de octopus de mens in feite niet anders kan zien dan als monster, waarbij opgemerkt moet worden dat de mens niet alleen hun soortgenoten vermoordt, maar ook zoals hiervoor beschreven andere dieren op massale manier afslacht en dat 24 uur per dag, 365 dagen per jaar.....  

Nayler beschrijft verder de slaven die op vissersboten worden gehouden in Azië en waarbij deze mensen keihard moeten werken en in havenplaatsen benedendeks worden gehouden en dat niet zelden in koude omstandigheden die hun gezondheid nog verder schaadt.....

In zijn boek onderzoekt Nayler het zeeleven van een hyperintelligente soort octopus, die een eigen taal en cultuur heeft, maar waarvoor een globaal techbedrijf erop uit is om deze niet menselijke intelligentie aan te wenden voor geldgewin met nieuwe systemen van kunstmatige intelligentie......

Daarmee wil men een wereld creëren die als dystopisch* moet worden gezien, met toezicht op alles wat men doet, waarbij grote gebieden door vervuiling dood zullen zijn, een wereld met alomtegenwoordige vervreemding (wat we nu al zien maar dan door het continue gebruik van de smartphone), herhaaldelijke gerichte moorden zullen worden gepleegd door regeringen en bedrijven tegen degenen die niet alleen de slavernij in eigen land weerstaan, maar ook die van arbeiders en dan vooral van hen in het arme zuidelijk deel van de wereld..... 

Het boek is niet persé een wetenschappelijk boek maar een wetenschappelijke roman, waarin Nayler op meesterlijke manier uitlegt wat onze hersenen zijn en kunnen doen. Een orgaan waamee we zoveel goeds kunnen doen, maar waarmee we anderen (vreselijk veel) kwaad kunnen doen...... Als je het mij vraagt doet de mens vooral heel veel kwaad met dit orgaan en waarbij het de meeste mensen zelfs niet interesseert dat we de aarde naar de gallemiezen helpen.....

Onder het schrijven van Hedges vind je een petitie die ook wij mogen tekenen en die oproept om de geplande 'intensiieve octopus boerderij' op Gran Canaria te stoppen, het moet eindelijk eens afgelopen zijn met de mens die denkt over elk leven op aarde te kunnen beschikken en op een manier te houden en te slachten, waarvoor het woord marteling de lading bij lange na niet dekt en alleen omdat het dieren zijn, wezens met wie wij de aarde zouden moeten beheren, maar waarmee we juist het tegenovergestelde doen: marteling en massamoord op een schaal die de wereld nooit eerder heeft gezien!!

The Chris Hedges Report: Dystopia, octopus intelligence, and what makes us human with Ray Nayler

Ray Nayler’s novel The Mountain in the Sea asks the kinds of questions about us, our future and our interaction with other living beings that are raised by many great works of science fiction.

In Ray Nayler’s novel The Mountain in the Sea he explores the marine habitat of a hyperintelligent species of octopus, endowed with its own language and culture, is seized by a global tech corporation determined to harness this non-human intelligence for profit in new systems of artificial intelligence. 

This dystopian future world is one of total surveillance, vast polluted dead zones, climate breakdown, a pervasive alienation, frequent targeted assassinations by governments and corporations against those who resist bondage as well as the brutal enslavement of workers, especially those from the global south. 

The lack of empathy we have for each other is reflected in the lack of empathy for other life forms. Our last common ancestor with octopuses is a flatworm that inched along the sea floor 750 million years ago. At the point we and all cephalopods traveled down separate evolutionary pathways. 

We already know that Octopuses, with nine brains, including one for each tentacle, and three hearts, are highly intelligent. They can change their color and shape to render themselves indistinguishable from the surrounding landscape. They can recognize individuals outside of their own species, including human faces. They can escape from sealed aquariums and walk around at night. They have been observed using rocks, broken shells, broken glass, bottle caps and coconut shells as tools and construction material for underwater cities. 

As Peter Godfrey Smith writes in Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and The Deep Origins of Consciousness: “Cephalopods are an island of complexity in the sea of invertebrate animals. Because our most recent common ancestor was so simple and lies so far back, cephalopods are an independent experiment in the evolution of large brains and complex behavior. If we can make contact cephalopods as sentient beings, it is not because of a shared history, not because of kinship, but because evolution built minds twice over. 

This is probably the closest we will come to meeting an intelligent alien.” And yet, as Nayler writes, we know little about them, how they think and communicate, how to interpret an intelligence so foreign to humankind, one that has the potential to rival our own. This lack of connectedness, with our own species and other species, Naylar argues, dooms us. Joining me to discuss his novel The Mountain the Sea is Ray Nayler.

Farming octopuses is also completely unsustainable, as wild marine life would be caught by the tonnes to feed them, putting yet more pressure on the oceans.

Help Stop the World’s First Octopus Farm

Gran Canaria is set to open the world’s first intensive octopus farm, which would see hundreds of thousands of these hyperintelligent beings commercially reared in cramped tanks every year before being slaughtered for food – even though scientists have warned that the animals will endure intense and prolonged suffering. Help stop these plans!

Intelligent, Complex, and Fascinating Animals

Octopuses are sentient beings who feel joy and excitement, but also pain and fear. They are extremely intelligent and have been known to use seashells for protection, steal food from traps set by fishers, escape from aquariums, and even decorate their homes. They communicate with one another through complex colour changes and flashes that humans still don’t understand. Keeping them on farms will lead to unnatural aggression, cannibalism, injury, and death as they fight and struggle to escape.

Octopus Welfare? Think Again

Currently, there’s no legislation in Spain that protects octopus welfare, leaving them vulnerable to unscrupulous profiteers who could keep them in any conditions and inflict unspeakable pain and suffering completely unchallenged.

Scientists have concluded that octopuses are sentient beings and that it is impossible to farm them in a way that doesn’t compromise their welfare. Confining these fascinating individuals – or any animal – to a barren tank is cruel.

At the end of their miserable lives, the octopuses will be slaughtered – most likely while fully conscious – experiencing horrific terror and pain as their brains are cut into or their heads are clubbed in.

Environmental Disaster

Farming octopuses is as unsustainable as it is inhumane. It would put yet more pressure on the ocean, as wild marine life would have to be caught to feed them, further depleting fish populations and disrupting the ecosystem.

Wetenschappers gebruiken inktvissen als proefdier

Inktvissen zijn uiterst intelligente dieren, met een aantal zeer opmerkelijke eigenschappen, zo  heeft de inktvis 3 harten en blauw bloed (maar inktvissen zijn heel wat beschaafder dan wat men 'de adel' noemt, de erfgenamen van psychopaten die de bevolking middels ongebreideld geweld onder de duim hielden.....)

Lees het volgende artikel, geschreven door Susan Bird en gepubliceerd op Anti-Media en verbaas je over de vele eigenschappen van deze wonderlijke zeedieren, dieren die in een aantal landen levend worden geserveerd en waar wetenschappers hun oog op hebben laten vallen om ze te martelen in onderzoeken die prima met computermodellen kunnen worden uitgevoerd..... Lullig dat Bird het deels nog opneemt voor dierproeven......

Jammer genoeg is er geen petitie aan dit artikel van het Care2 team verbonden, daar een verbod op dierproeven met deze dieren (en alle andere dieren) van het grootste belang is, deze dierenmishandeling op grote schaal moet eindelijk eens afgelopen zijn (zoals ook aan het eten van inktvis een eind moet worden gemaakt):

The octopus is a smart, curious and mysterious being. So does it surprise you to learn that these very qualities mean scientists are turning octopuses into 21st century lab rats?

Yes, it’s true. There are now thousands of octopuses and other cephalopods living in laboratories. The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, is at the forefront of the effort to study all aspects of cephalopod physiology. Whether that’s a good thing depends on your perspective.

“It’s the only place on the planet that you can go where we are culturing a number of these species through every life stage, through successive generations, with the goal of creating a genetically tractable system,” Marine Biological Laboratory’s Bret Grasse told NPR.

Scientists study many types of animals for different reasons. They call certain creatures “model organisms” because their biology is often similar to ours and we already know quite a lot about their genetic makeup. Such organisms include yeast, fruit flies, worms, zebrafish and mice.

To understand tissue regeneration, scientists study zebrafish and worms, who can regrow appendages they injure or lose completely. To study the interaction of genes with environment, they look at honeybees and fruit flies. To study aging, the sea urchin has been a useful study animal because it can regrow body parts through its lifetime.

Octopuses have the largest, most complex brain of all invertebrate animals. That makes them of great interest to scientists, especially those who do research on genes. Scientists can now alter octopus genes, meaning they are breeding these creatures and fiddling with their genetic makeup to see what effect those changes have.

“With these organisms, you could understand what genes did by manipulating them,” Marine Biological Laboratory biologist Josh Rosenthal told NPR. “And that really became an indispensable part of biology.”

ALL ABOUT THE OCTOPUS

Octopuses — yes, that’s the correct plural term, not “octopi” — are eight-legged ocean dwellers who have three hearts and blue blood. They are a type of highly advanced mollusk. Completely boneless, they can squeeze into impossibly small spaces, making them rather infamous escape artists from aquariums.

“They are curious, inquisitive animals,” Roger Hanlon, Marine Biological Laboratory senior scientist, told Live Science in 2016. “They forage hundreds of meters per day looking for food and mates and different shelters. This is an ambulatory animal, so the idea that they would want to move outside their tank in an aquarium is not at all surprising.”

The octopus is a solitary wanderer. Except when mating, it explores the world by itself. When placed together in lab aquariums, octopuses fight one another. They therefore each need their own living space. And speaking of containers, an octopus has no trouble unscrewing itself from inside a jar.

Each leg of an octopus — technically, it’s not a “tentacle” — contains 200 or more highly sensitive suckers they use for both taste and touch.

An octopus has amazing defensive mechanisms. It can quickly change its color to camouflage itself, hide among ocean waves by matching their speed exactly, flatten itself to mimic being a fish and, when cornered, squirt ink to create a distraction or screen from predators.

ANIMAL WELFARE RULES ARE LACKING

Of course, any impressive and intelligent animal eventually becomes the focus of scientific experimentation. Now, it’s unfortunately the octopus’s turn. That could be a problem for them, as animal welfare rules for scientific research don’t apply to invertebrate animals — those without a spine — except in the European Union.

Marine Biological Laboratory has some 3,000 cephalopods and is breeding more all the time. For animal lovers, that’s not good news. But it’s heartening to know that despite the lack of regulations to protect these creatures, Marine Biological Laboratory says it’s taking their welfare seriously.

Researchers are working on keeping living conditions as stress-free as possible. Marine Biological Laboratory is also putting effort into determining what anesthesia will work best for cephalopods and developing what they call a “one-of-a-kind policy for cephalopod research.”

I wish we could find other ways to research than to poke at animals. How sad that these wonderful, intelligent creatures live their entire lives in labs instead of free in the oceans where they belong.

That said, I’m grateful these researchers are actively thinking about how to make captive octopus lives better, even when legally they aren’t required to do so. But it’s time we regulate cephalopod research to make sure we don’t have to depend on the conscience of those doing the experimenting.

Dierenmishandeling: levende dieren eten..... Tijd voor het verbieden van deze barbaarse 'eetgewoonte!'

De mensheid is voor een groot deel een barbaarse parasiet, die nergens voor terugdeinst, dat werd afgelopen donderdag, ten overvloede, weer eens bevestigd met een bericht op Care2.

Het bericht handelt over het gruwelijke 'gebruik' levende dieren te eten, wellicht heeft u al eens iemand levend 'zeefruit' (de schunnige vergelijking met fruit!) zien eten en bent daar onpasselijk voor weggelopen uit een restaurant.

Restaurants Are Under Fire for Serving Live Animals to Customers

Following the release of a gruesome investigation, animal advocates are working to get live animals off menus at restaurants in California and New York.

This week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released graphic footageof what happens to live octopuses whose limbs are severed and served to customers for a Korean dish called “sannakji.”

“[T]he octopus, which you’ve been chopping to pieces, is feeling pain every time you do it. It’s just as painful as if it were a hog, a fish, or a rabbit, if you chopped a rabbit’s leg off piece by piece. So it’s a barbaric thing to do to the animal,” said cephalopod expert Dr. Jennifer Mather.

Worse is that the cruelty at restaurants in New York and Los Angeles wasn’t limited to the amazing multi-limbed cephalopods.

Lobsters and shrimp were also prepared for diners by having their tails cut off and plated next to their still-living bodies, or having their exoskeletons torn off so diners can bite right into them. According to PETA,”Some restaurants steam octopuses, lobsters, and other animals alive in ‘live seafood’ hot pots. Raucous and giggling restaurant-goers often poke at the struggling animals, and some are ‘tasked’ with preventing them from escaping.”

It’s astonishing and disturbing to think that anyone would partake in this, or celebrate chefs attempting to normalize such extreme acts of violence and cruelty towards other beings. It’s been well established that cephalopods are sensitive, curious and highly intelligent creatures. Decapods, or crustaceans, including lobsters and shrimp, have also long been known to be capable of feeling pain. Whether we understand exactly how they think or feel is beside the point when it comes to questioning how other sentient beings should be treated.

Unfortunately, animals intended for human consumption aren’t covered under general animal cruelty laws, and it’s perfectly legal for restaurants to keep live seafood.

PETA hopes exposing this will help get people to pressure lawmakers to ban serving live animals in  New York and California. At least if it’s illegal, anyone caught doing this can potentially be held accountable, but hopefully the awareness raised by this investigation will encourage more people to include animals who become seafood into their circle of compassion. They might not be as cute and furry as other animals we advocate for, but they’re no less deserving of our consideration or protection.

Inktvis klimt uit aquarium en ontsnapt richting oceaan!!

Gisteren op BBC World Service het nieuws, dat een inktvis uit een groot aquarium wist te ontsnappen. Eén van de medewerkers van het zeeaquarium (martelplaats voor zeedieren) in Nieuw-Zeeland, had de deksel van het bewuste aquarium open laten staan. De inktvis wist uit het aquarium te klimmen en vond een afvoerpijp richting oceaan, waardoor het (prachtige en slimme) dier ontsnapte........ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!
