Mensenrechten: het recht op vrije meningsuiting en westerse hypocrisie. Extra: het recht op veiligheid (artikel 3)

Het recht op vrije meningsuiting is één van de rechten waar ieder mens aanspraak op kan maken, maar meer en meer wordt ook dit recht uitgehold in de zogenaamde vrije westerse wereld. Verantwoordelijken daarvoor zijn de politici, rechtse denktanks en zogenaamde deskundigen, gesteund door de reguliere westerse media die niet zelden schreeuwen om censuur uit te oefenen op de sociale media en alternatieve berichtgeving, waarbij die media voorbeelden aanhalen die ronduit belachelijk zijn en maar weinigen bereiken, althans als ze niet door psychopathisch fascistische idioten als Trump worden gebruikt. 

Een 'geheel nieuw verschijnsel' is de enorme eenzijdige berichtgeving in de reguliere media, waar je ruwweg vóór het jaar 2000, sterk tegenstrijdige meningen en berichtgeving kon vinden, is dat sinds die tijd een uitzondering. In de jaren 60 kwamen de media steeds verder onder een vergrootglas te liggen en werd men onderwerp van spot wanneer je met een claim kwam dat het waar moet zijn daar het in de krant stond. Te achterlijk voor woorden dan ook dat juist tegenwoordig (2025!!) wordt gesproken over factchecken, waarvoor men de berichtgeving in de reguliere media (dus inclusief de dagbladen) als leidraad neemt en voor waar verklaart. Schunnig ook dat men de jeugd op deze manier middels het onderwijs probeert te hersenspoelen.....

Zie wat de reguliere media aan berichtgeving hebben gebracht in aanloop van, tijdens en na de illegale oorlogen die de VS deze eeuw heeft gevoerd, terwijl bij wijze van spreken iedere kleuter kan weten dat de VS als reden voor die oorlogen tegen Afghanistan, Irak, Libië en Syrië (plus het initiëren van en meedoen aan oorlogen in andere landen dan Libië in Afrika) keihard heeft gelogen, let wel leugens die aan meer dan 5 miljoen mensen het leven hebben gekost, ofwel die zijn vermoord door de legers van de VS, de grootste terreurentiteit ter wereld en het extra leger van de VS >> het leger onder de terreurvlag van de NAVO, waarmee de volkeren van de meeste NAVO-lidstaten medeplichtig werden gemaakt aan deze enorme slachting (en ja ook wij Nederlanders zijn als medeplichtig aan te merken), al zijn de politieke leiders, de media, rechtse denktanks en zogenaamde deskundigen uiteraard de eerste verantwoordelijken, die deze volkeren mede verantwoordelijk hebben gemaakt voor die illegale oorlogen......

Niet één van de reguliere massamedia die deze oorlogen van meet af aan hebben gesteund en zelfs die met de berichtgeving kwamen dat weer een reden voor het beginnen van een oorlog door de VS moest worden doorgeprikt als een flagrante leugen, hebben ooit een rectificatie geplaatst, sterker nog: een aantal van die media blijven de leugens tot de dag van vandaag herhalen.... En die media worden gezien als brengers van feiten (facts)..... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! (vergeet daarbij niet dat die media de foute politici, denktanks en 'deskundigen' alle ruimte hebben gegeven om de westerse volkeren te hersenspoelen)

Ja ik lach wel maar intussen worden mensen zelfs strafrechtelijk vervolgd als ze tegen het narratief van de westerse landen ingaan en wel de waarheid brengen.... De genocide die Israël nu al bijna 22 maanden lang uitvoert op de Palestijnen is wel de grootste exponent op dat gebied, waar de hele wereld al die 22 maanden lang beelden heeft gezien die bevestigen dat Israël inderdaad een genocide uitvoert, worden mensen vervolgd die het opnemen voor het Palestijnse volk dat wordt afgeslacht. Het gaat zelfs zover dat je daarvoor kan worden uitgemaakt voor antisemiet, dit is het geval in de VS, Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië (GB) en Frankrijk, waar men in GB zover gaat dat een organisatie die het vreedzaam opneemt voor de Palestijnen en nooit geweld heeft gebruikt tegen personen >> Palestine Action (PA) wordt uitgemaakt voor terreurorganisatie en als je daar lid van bent je wordt uitgemaakt voor terrorist, sterker nog je hoeft  maar een protestbord op te houden waarop deze organisatie wordt genoemd en je wordt gezien als terrorist..... 

Afgelopen weekend werden in Britse steden een paar honderd mensen gearresteerd omdat ze demonstreerden met borden waarop o.a. Palestine Action stond te lezen, zelfs oude mensen werden gearresteerd >> de oudste arrestant was een vrouw van 80 jaar, die alleen met een stok kan lopen..... Elbit Systems, een Israëlische wapenfabrikant en 'defensie-aannemer' (lees: oorlog- en genocide-winstmaker), die ook in GB drones maakt waarmee zelfs Palestijnse kinderen worden vermoord, heeft gelobbyd bij de Britse neoliberale opperploert en mede verantwoordelijke voor genocide Keir Starmer om Palestine Action aan te merken als terreurorganisatie, daar de fabriek van dat geteisem telkens weer doel was van protesten door Palestine Action.....  

Nogmaals >> zelfs lopen met een bord waarop de naam 'Palestine Action' staat leidt in GB tot arrestatie..... Uiteraard is dit onderdeel van het geheel uitnemen van de vrijheid van meningsuiting, maar niet alleen dat: men wil ook het recht om te mogen demonstreren verbieden (ook in ons land; zo meer daarover), voorts is in GB verboden: -het blokkeren van wegen (waar de uitlaatgassen van auto's veel meer doden veroorzaken dan roken), -het blokkeren van start- en landingsbanen op vliegvelden en -het blokkeren van de toegang tot bedrijven (bijvoorbeeld bedrijven die zich als Elbit Systems bezighouden met levering van wapens aan Israël om Palestijnen op grote schaal mee te vermoorden en bedrijven in de transportsector als Maersk)....

In Nederland zijn fascistische partijen en bewegingen als PVV en zelfs de VVD voor het sterk inperken van het demonstratierecht en daarmee het inperken van de vrijheid van meningsuiting..... Zo heeft Ingrid Michon van de VVD begin dit jaar gepleit mensen die wegen blokkeren, of die startbanen op vliegvelden blokkeren, dan wel die zeesluizen blokkeren strafrechtelijk te vervolgen en wel zo dat men hen daarmee feitelijk als terroristen moet behandelen..... VVD >> Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie.... ha! ha! ha! ha! Wat een enorme aanfluiting die naam!! (om over de betekenis van de fascistische beweging PVV maar helemaal te zwijgen) 

Mensenrechtenorganisaties zouden dan ook zwaar aan de bel moeten hangen, maar vreemd genoeg staan organisaties als Human Right Watch (HRW) en Amnesty International, regelmatig achter het westerse narratief dat wordt uitgedragen door westerse landen, de reguliere westerse media, rechtse denktanks en 'deskundigen....'** Opvallend overigens dat je Amnesty en HRW amper of beter gezegd niet hoort over de verregaande aantasting van de mensenrechten in het westen, zoals: het recht op vrije meningsuiting, het recht op demonstreren, het recht op privacy en de vervolging van journalisten en bloggers die het wagen tegen het algemeen geldende narratief in te gaan.... Trouwens ook de felheid van westerse regeringen tegen moslims als er weer eens een aanslag wordt gepleegd, op z'n scherpst met maatregelen tegen vluchtelingen, is amper of geen reden voor deze mensenrechtenorganisaties om aan de bel te trekken..... (vergeet hierbij niet dat de westerse terreur tegen moslimlanden 1.000 stations verder gaat dan terreuraanslagen in het westen, aanslagen die NB zijn uitgelokt door de westerse terreur, die zoals gezegd alleen deze eeuw al aan 5 miljoen mensen het leven heeft gekost.....) 

Wat geldt voor Israël en de illegale oorlogen die de VS deze eeuw begon, geldt ook voor de NAVO-oorlog die in Oekraïne wordt uitgevochten, een oorlog ook geïnitieerd door de VS, waar de CIA de opstand van 2013 en de daarop volgende staatsgreep van 2014 tegen de NB democratisch gekozen president Janoekovytsj heeft georganiseerd en geregisseerd, wat van te voren werd gefinancierd met 5 miljard dollar door Killary Clinton, toen zij onder Obama minister was van BuZa.....* 

Als je een afwijkende mening geeft over Oekraïne, zoals je die vaak hebt kunnen lezen op dit blog*, loop je in GB, Duitsland en Frankrijk grote kans te worden gearresteerd en/of de overheden daar kunnen zelfs je bankrekening blokkeren, wat een aantal echte journalisten is overkomen, hier loop je grote kans te worden gecensureerd (en dat in een zogenaamde democratie!!).... Julian Assange, een gelauwerde onderzoeksjournalist werd zelfs meer dan 4 jaar in isolatiefolter gehouden, omdat hij zware oorlogsmisdaden openbaarde die werden begaan door o.a. het VS-leger..... Nogmaals: het gaat daarbij als om echte journalisten, dus niet die van de reguliere westerse massamedia, deze zijn gebonden aan wat de spuugrijke eigenaren dan wel investeerders vinden over diverse zaken en die meestal gelijk oplopen met wat de westerse regeringen als leidend willen zien, eenzijdige berichtgeving naar het narratief zoals dat wordt ingegeven door de westerse regeringen en die van belang zijn voor de aandelenportefeuilles van deze eigenaren, zoals die in de dood en verderf zaaiende wapenindustrie. Vandaar ook dat o.a. die media belang hebben bij continue oorlogsvoering, zie ook de steun voor de illegale oorlogen van de VS, zoals eerder aangegeven in dit bericht, oorlogen die de VS deze eeuw heeft gevoerd met haar extra NAVO-leger (de VS is feitelijk de baas van de NAVO, zeker in oorlogssituaties).... 

De VS heeft met haar oorlogen, georganiseerde en geregisseerde staatsgrepen en opstanden vanaf 1945 tot het jaar 2000 meer dan 20 miljoen mensen vermoord, deze eeuw werden daar als gezegd nog eens meer dan 5 miljoen moorden aan toegevoegd, dit alles zonder dat er ook maar één sanctie werd opgelegd aan die grootste terreurentiteit ter wereld!! Vergelijk dat eens met het belachelijke aantal sancties tegen Rusland, die bovendien ten onrechte werden getroffen..... 

Je zal begrijpen dat het voeren van oorlog behoort tot de grootste mensenrechtenschendingen, om over genocide nog maar te zwijgen (dat gaat nog een aantal stations verder dan oorlog voeren >> zie het enorme aantal vermoorde Palestijnen in bijna 22 maanden tijd.....) 

De steeds verder doorgevoerde censuur in westerse landen is samen met de fascismisering in veel landen een walgelijke gang naar internationale fascistische dictaturen.... Tekenend dan ook dat de rechten van vluchtelingen, daklozen en mensen die hongerlijden met voeten worden getreden door de hypocriete westerse landen, waar men de mond vol heeft over de eigen 'democratie' en het respecteren van mensenrechten, zeker als men spreekt over landen als Rusland, China, Iran en Noord-Korea... De VS is wat dat betreft wel de meest hypocriete van alle westerse landen, terwijl men daar zelfs binnen de eigen grenzen lak heeft aan het feit dat velen zich geen kankerbehandelingen kunnen veroorloven en zo veel eerder moeten sterven dan nodig zou zijn, een land ook waar hele volksstammen dakloos zijn en in tentsteden wonen, een land waar dagelijks 14 miljoen kinderen met honger naar school gaan, een land waar men de grootste gevangenisbevolking ter wereld heeft en men rond de 120.000 mensen in isolatie gevangen houdt, een zeer ernstige vorm van marteling, die mensen lichamelijk en geestelijk kapot maakt >> niet voor niets dat men spreekt van isolatiefolter, een heel groot deel van deze gevangenen wordt zelfs meer dan 10 jaar lang op deze manier gemarteld.....    

Gezien al het voorgaande moet worden geconcludeerd dat het recht op veiligheid weliswaar een mensenrecht is, maar dat dit voor een heel groot deel van de wereldbevolking niet wordt gerespecteerd. Daarbij is het westen niet zelden een gevaar voor de veiligheid van mensen in landen die niet tot het westen behoren, denk daarbij nogmaals aan de illegale oorlogen die de VS deze eeuw is begonnen..... Ook de veiligheid van etnische Russen in Oekraïne is blijkbaar niet bestaand, en dat al vanaf 2014!!

Where Speech Is More Honoured in the Breach Than the Observance

The right to free speech is enshrined in many international conventions and treaties, including Article 19 of the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which most countries are signatories to; also important are Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 1 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolution 1510. Signatories to these are thereby compelled to abide by them, usually via appropriate domestic constitutions and laws. The First Amendment of the US Constitution is perhaps the most famous example of a constitutional protection of free speech.

Most politicians, mainstream media, and indeed persons of influence in the UK and US purport to support free speech in line with these obligations but my argument is that very few do so in a principled manner. In fact, free speech is not supported by significant numbers on three broad areas: Muslims and Islam; transgender and non-binary persons; and Jews and Israel. It is generally the case that those on the left of the political spectrum are reticent, even hostile, about free speech concerning the first two areas while those on the right are the same about the third area. Of course, there are exceptions to this generalisation.

In the UK, the blasphemy law suppressed free speech concerning the Church of England—this was eventually repealed in England and Wales in 2008 and in Scotland in 2024. Though the law should, in fact, have been repealed when the UK ratified the UDHR, it was rarely invoked even though the lampooning and criticism of Christianity became common place from the 1960s onwards. Following mass immigration post-World War 2, a key focus of concern regarding free speech has been the religion and culture of ethnic minorities, particularly regarding Muslims and Islam.

Matters came to a head in 1988 in the “Satanic Verses Affair” when Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against the author, Salman Rushdie. Many soi disant progressives refused to support Rushdie and free speech and so advocated censorship of the book on the grounds that it was deeply intolerant of Muslim sensibilities. A notorious intervention was by the left-wing black Labour MP Bernie Grant who, a day after the fatwa, stated in the House of Commons that “Burning books is not a big issue for blacks” and that “the whites wanted to impose their values on the world”—with the implication that free speech was a “white value” (cited in Rushdie, 2012, p. 187). We can aver that since then, a significant division of opinion has arisen among those who advocate censorship relating to Muslims and Islam and those who do not; the former argue that “Islamophobia”—a catch all censoring epithet that gained increasing prominence—must be avoided while the latter—on this issue—support the defence of lawful free speech.

It is fair to say that there has been much self-censorship on this issue over the past 35 years so as to avoid the wounding charge of being an “Islamophobe”—but a contributory factor has been the threat of violence. This was poignantly explained by former Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, when he pointed out that “Without question, ‘I complain in the strongest possible terms,’ is different from, ‘I complain in the strongest possible terms and I am loading my AK47 as I write’.” (The Telegraph, 2012). There have been numerous instances of the use of violence by Islamists to shut down free speech, most notably, the murder of ten staff members of Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January 2015.

Leftists and liberals are renowned for protesting for or against a variety of causes but diligently refrain from doing so concerning actions that are deemed “Islamophobic” but instead advocate censorship. Their hypocrisy is exposed as they demand and assert the right to free speech on issues of interest to them.

Censorship surrounding the second broad area has come to prominence in the past decade or so and for similar reasons. Thus, trans and non-binary persons, like Muslims, are considered a small and persecuted minority who should be provided with solidarity and protection—ipso facto, they must not be slighted in any way. This has become the dominant position in political circles, the mainstream media, and academia; just as they wish to avoid being censured as “Islamophobic,” so too they wish to avoid being labelled “transphobic,” All manner of contortions are resorted to, to evade grappling with thorny questions such as the definition of a woman. Those such as “gender critical feminists” who argue that biological reality should take primacy over self-categorisation are harassed and censored for being transphobic.

Again, with the notable exception of gender critical feminists, it is generally those on the left and liberal spectrum who resort to such censorship yet assert their right of free speech against those they deem as transphobic thereby once more exposing their hypocrisy.

Importantly, however, many powerful forces reject the kow-towing to trans ideology and support free speech therein, the most important being US president Donald Trump who promised to end what he termed “transgender lunacy.” He duly signed an executive order that stipulated that “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.” (The White House, 2025) Hence, trans and non-binary categories are delegitimised and excluded in all federal government and government-supported institutions. In Europe, many leading politicians including the prime ministers of Italy and Hungary (Georgia Meloni and Viktor Orban) hold similar views.

Whether this, and the UK Supreme Court ruling that sex refers to biological sex, significantly alters an attitudinal change among defenders of trans and non-binary categories is unlikely so that much censorship on this issue will, accordingly, remain.

We can make the case that censorship pertaining to Muslims/Islam and trans/non-binary issues and indeed of ethnic and sexual minorities generally has been the catalyst for the rising concern for protection of free speech in recent years. Attempts at curbing free speech include means such as “trigger warnings” and “no-platform” policies that encompass a “cancel culture”—indeed, a new term arose to describe sensibilities to minorities that warranted suppression of free speech, “woke.” Unease with, and even hostility to this development came most notably from the conservative end of the political spectrum who presented themselves as champions of free speech.

The previous Conservative government was on board with this thinking as attested by its requirement that universities in England had a duty to not only protect but promote free speech and academic freedom. My own university, University of Sussex, was last month given a record £585,000 fine by the Office for Students for breaching this requirement. Specifically, it concluded that “The University of Sussex’s Trans and Non-Binary Equality Policy Statement failed to uphold the freedom of speech and academic freedom” (OfS, 2025).

In the US, the push for greater free speech has come from conservatives—including by Donald Trump who was removed from Twitter and Facebook—on the basis that the mainstream media and the academy are dominated by liberals who have been censoring and suppressing conservative viewpoints. It is a view strongly promulgated by Elon Musk who, following his takeover of Twitter in 2022, removed moderators ostensibly to increase the platform’s commitment to free speech. Facebook then followed suit.

The third broad category concerns Jews and Israel. Since the end of the Second World War and the Nazi Holocaust, there has been great reluctance to render criticisms of Jews across the political spectrum—Jewish comedians lampooning fellow Jews was the exception that proved the rule. The charge of antisemitism has always carried enormous weight akin to blasphemy, resulting in an almost blanket censorship in this regard.¹

Similarly, following the creation of Israel in 1948, in both the US and UK, there has been widespread reluctance to criticise the country, particularly from the right of the political spectrum—and Israel and its supporters have successfully conflated criticism of Israel and its policies as being antisemitic, in other words, equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism so again, resulting in sweeping censorship.

The Gaza war has, however, exposed the rank hypocrisy of erstwhile proponents of free speech from the right by their rejection of it concerning Israel. Examples abound—we briefly focus on the UK and US governments. In the large demonstrations in London from October 2023 onwards, the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” was deemed by the then Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, as antisemitic and the protests were considered unsafe for Jewish people. This was bogus as the chant is perfectly lawful and had been used for years, and the demonstrations were largely peaceful and included many Jews. What the Conservative government—a strong supporter of Israel—wanted was the end of support for Palestinians, an egregious attempt at suppressing free speech and freedom of assembly. Its hypocrisy on free speech was thereby laid bare.

The Labour government, like its predecessor, is also trying to muffle supporters of the Palestinian cause as evidenced by its proscribing the direct-action group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation. The prime minister Keir Starmer attempted to prevent the Northern Irish group Kneecap, who vociferously support the Palestinians, from appearing at Glastonbury and the government, echoed up by the media writ large, expressed outrage by the rapper Bob Vylan chanting “Death to the IDF” at Glastonbury; forgetting that it is Israel and the IDF that is being investigated for possibly committing genocide in Gaza by the International Court of Justice.

In the US, this hypocrisy has been even more pronounced, especially under the Trump administration. In February 2025, at the Munich Security Conference, Vice President JD Vance lectured Europeans about free speech stating: “In Britain and across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat. And in the interest of comity, my friends, but also in the interest of truth, I will admit that sometimes the loudest voices for censorship have come not from within Europe, but from within my own country, where the prior administration threatened and bullied social media companies to censor so-called misinformation’ (RealClearPolitics, 2025).

There is much truth in this belief—indeed, both in the US and Europe Russian media outlets were shut down after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. But the Trump administration has rent asunder the First Amendment by going after immigrants who took part in pro-Palestinian protests on US campuses by seeking to strip them of their legal status and deport them. In March 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US had revoked at least 300 foreign students’ visas as part of President Trump’s effort to clamp down on pro-Palestinian protesters on university campuses (BBC News, March 2025). Also threatened with deportation are US residents such as Mahmoud Khalil and Yunseo Chung—the latter is suing the US government for violating core protected speech (Anguiano, 2025).

Relatedly, Trump announced the cancellation of approximately $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University “due to the school’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students” (Marquez, 2025); and followed this up by freezing more than $2bn in federal funds and tax-exempt status for Harvard University. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump wanted the university to apologise for what his administration says is continuing tolerance of antisemitism (BBC News, April 2025).

These are trumped-up allegations that egregiously violate the First Amendment. Furthermore, they ignore the fact that many Jewish staff and students at US university campuses also protested against Israel’s war in Gaza. What is worrying is that both in the US and UK, false charges of antisemitism by governments are being used to suppress free speech in support of Palestinians and against Israel’s destruction of Gaza. In other words, the aim is to prohibit any criticism of Israel and support for Palestinians. This is cancellation culture at its worst.

It is abundantly clear that very few, if any, in positions of power and, we might add, in the mainstream media have taken a principled stance on free speech that is protected by various conventions, treaties, constitutions, and laws. In fact, even supposed defenders of free speech such as Index on Censorship do not have a principled stance on the issue. I mention this because this article was originally written for Index on Censorship, but they declined to publish it because it covers “sensitive issues.”

Without doubt, there is much hypocrisy concerning free speech and on the three issues highlighted, for far too many, it is more honoured in the breach than the observance.

Hersenspoeling en verkiezingsmanipulatie met hulp van fake news en desinformatie door de reguliere westerse media

De roep, of beter gezegd de schreeuw van de reguliere westerse media, politici, 'deskundigen', geheime diensten en rechtse denktanks om fake news en desinformatie op de sociale media aan te pakken is intussen al het zoveelste jaar ingegaan. Ofwel deze schreeuw om censuur door die media, politiek enz. wordt vooral gedaan in zogenaamde westerse democratieën en niet zonder succes, zo wordt er al heel wat af gecensureerd. Vorige week maandag nog ontving ik een bericht van Blogger waarin werd gesteld dat een video die ik wilde plaatsten in een bericht over de genocide in de Gazastrook, waarin verbrande kinderen waren te zien die op de vloer van een geïmproviseerde kliniek werden behandeld, is verwijderd daar dit de regels van Blogger zou hebben overtreden.....  Dit bericht ontving ik als gezegd op maandag de 14de april, echter pas een dag later heb ik dat bericht geplaatst, ofwel Blogger (Google) kijkt over je schouder mee als je een bericht maakt...... Een dag later, dus dinsdag de 15de ontving ik hetzelfde bericht nogmaals, maar dit keer dik een uur na plaatsing...... Hier het bericht van Blogger (cursief door mij toegepast):

Tja, de 'grens overschrijden' door het laten zien wat een genocidale fascistische staat aan ellende aanricht is natuurlijk niet de bedoeling.... In het westen mag men 'uiteraard' niet alle ellende zien waarmee het Palestijnse volk al 19 maanden lang te heeft te maken, kijk als het nu Oekraïense kinderen waren geweest, slachtoffer van Russische geweld, was het anders geweest...... Moet zeggen dat het me nog meevalt dat het Blogger Team niet meteen een opmerking maakte over het woord 'genocide', nu ze toch bezig waren..... Zoals je op deze plek al vaak hebt kunnen lezen is het brengen van fake news en desinformatie vooral een specialiteit van de reguliere westerse media, westerse geheime diensten, westerse politici, zogenaamde westerse deskundigen en westerse rechtse denktanks. Deze manier van berichtgeving en het brengen van verzonnen en gelogen achtergronden, kan niet anders worden gezien dan als een heftige vorm van hersenspoeling..... Eén van de wel schandaligste en grootste voorbeelden daarvan is wat men voor een groot deel in het westen gelooft van wat er is gebeurd op 7 oktober 2023 en wel zo dat men zelfs de genocide die de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël daarna begon op de Palestijnse bevolking steunde met het meer dan maffe excuus dat Israël het recht heeft zich te verdedigen, alsof een genocide uitvoeren een verdediging is.... (steun ook met wapens en munitie....)

Een ander gestoord voorbeeld is wat men de Eerste Golfoorlog is gaan noemen, maar wat in werkelijkheid de Tweede Golfoorlog was*. Deze Tweede Golfoorlog duurde van 2 augustus 1990 tot 28 februari 1991 en werd door de VS aangegaan op basis van de leugen dat Iraakse militairen in Koeweit baby's uit couveuses hadden gehaald en op de grond hadden gegooid ten einde deze couveuses te stelen. Een leugen die de VS zelf in de wereld had geholpen, om zo een reden te hebben om een oorlog tegen Irak te beginnen. De westerse media namen deze leugen gretig over en brachten deze met veel sensatie met hulp van zogenaamde deskundigen van onder andere rechtse denktanks..... Opvallend dat na deze oorlog amper of geen westers mediaorgaan, die deze leugen had gebracht, een rectificatie plaatste.... 

Met deze manier van hersenpoelen worden uiteraard ook de verkiezingen in westerse landen gemanipuleerd, zie hoe groot de invloed is van de oorlog in Oekraïne op verkiezingen in westerse landen.... Partijen die zich niet houden aan het officiële narratief dat Rusland de grote boosdoener is kunnen het wel vergeten....

Deze manier van handelen werd meermaals herhaald zoals tijdens de oorlog tegen Joegoslavië (het huidige Servië), overigens een oorlog die vooral was opgestookt door de Duitse minister van BuZa, Genscher, een ploert de luxe die met staatseer werd begraven, maar die aan de wieg stond van wat men 'Balkanisation' is gaan noemen, het opdelen van een land zodat dit nooit meer een macht van betekenis zou kunnen worden, iets wat de westerse landen met Rusland willen doen, eerst met de VS 'op de bok, maar dat land is onder leiding van Trump afgestapt....' (maar je weet maar nooit met deze fascistisch psychopathische kleuter, wellicht dat hij in de nabije toekomst weer 'op die bok gaat zitten')

De oorlogen die de VS deze eeuw begon tegen Afghanistan, Irak, Libië en Syrië, zijn op eenzelfde manier op basis van leugens aangegaan en wat betreft Afghanistan zijn velen ervan overtuigd dat 9/11 een 'inside job' was van de CIA en NSA in samenwerking met de Mossad en de Saoedische geheime dienst, de aanslag die tot de oorlog tegen Afghanistan leidde. Deze oorlogen plus geheime militaire-CIA operaties, opstanden en staatsgrepen, hebben aan meer dan 5 miljoen mensen het leven gekost..... Uiteraard alles met hulp van de aan de VS onderhorige andere NAVO-lidstaten, waaronder ons land. De inval van Rusland in Oekraïne, is ook door de VS geïnitieerd, dit met de door de CIA georganiseerde en geregisseerde opstand van 2013, gevolgd door de op dezelfde manier georganiseerde en geregisseerde staatsgreep van 2014 tegen de NB democratisch gekozen president Janoekovytsj!!** 

Deze coup was de reden voor de etnische Russen in het oosten van het land om zich af te scheiden van Oekraïne, zij hadden immers voor Janoekovytsj gekozen, hetzelfde geldt voor de bevolking van De Krim, die zelfs bestaat uit Oekraïners en het oorspronkelijke bevolking van De Krim. Zij kozen in een referendum massaal voor aansluiting bij Rusland (niet zo vreemd, immers de Russische marinehavens zijn de grootste werkgevers op dat schiereiland en dat al 200 jaar, bovendien wilde men niet leven onder een fascistische dictatuur!!) In het westen liegt men echter dat Rusland De Krim met geweld heeft geannexeerd en die leugen blijft men herhalen..... (nazibeest Goebbels, Hitlers minister van propaganda: als je een leugen maar lang genoeg herhaalt wordt deze vanzelf waarheid....)

De oorlog tegen Irak die de VS in 2003 begon, ging ook vooraf met smerige leugens, dit maal zou Irak Al Qaida hebben gesteund met de aanvallen op de Twin Towers, terwijl het bewind van Saddam Hoessein een minstens zo grote vijand was van die terreurgroep als van de VS. Die leugen was te makkelijk door te prikken dus loog men over 'massavernietigingswapens' die Irak en dan met name de president Saddam Hoessein zou hebben. De Britse geheime dienst MI6 en de reguliere Britse media, waaronder staatsomroep BBC (en daarna alle westerse mediaorganen), brachten zelfs de leugen dat Irak Groot-Brittannie binnen 15 minuten zou kunnen raken met lange afstandsraketten, die het land niet eens had..... Irak had destijds Scud-raketten, uiterst onnauwkeurige middellange afstandsraketten, die maximaal 600 km. konden vliegen, terwijl de afstand van Irak naar Groot-Brittannie meer dan 4.000 km. lang is...... 

Scott Ritter, destijds nog wapeninspecteur voor de VN, liep het vuur uit z'n sloffen om wie het in het westen maar wilde horen, te vertellen dat men in de VS en andere westerse landen keihard loog en Irak geen massavernietingswapens had.... (Hans Blix, hoofd van het VN-wapeninspectieteam en de geheime diensten van westerse landen brachten die leugen) Echter Ritter had met zijn team het hele land bij wijze van spreken op de kop gezet en wist op zeker dat Irak die wapens niet (meer) had..... 

Ondanks dat bleven de reguliere media in het westen, de geheime diensten en politici volhouden dat Irak wel degelijk massavernietigingswapens had. Ex-generaal Colin Powell, destijds minister van BuZa in de VS, bracht deze leugen in de VN waarbij hij tevens de leugen bracht dat Al Qaida goede banden onderhield met Hoessein....  Daarna begon de VS in 2003 de oorlog tegen Irak..... Nooit hebben die media, geheime diensten enz. enz. een rectificatie geplaatst.... Lullig genoeg stond de 'voorman' van PAX (destijds nog Pax Christi) Mient Jan Faber, ondanks alle genoemde bedenkingen (die hij niet had) achter deze oorlog die aan minstens 2,5 miljoen mensen het leven moet hebben gekost.....(deze Pax Christi oplichter liet later weten, toen allang bekend was dat de VS keihard had gelogen, nog steeds achter die oorlog te staan....)

Het was wat betreft de illegale oorlogen die de VS daarna begon met hulp van haar slaafse NAVO-partners, de oorlogen tegen Libië en Syrië, al niet veel beter, ook deze oorlogen begon de VS op basis van smerige leugens en die leugens werden met grote graagte herhaald in de reguliere westerse media, door westerse geheime diensten, politici, 'deskundigen' en rechtse denktanks..... 

Ondanks dat een groot deel van de westerse bevolkingen op de hoogte moeten zijn van die leugens waarmee de VS deze oorlogen begon, gelooft men heilig in wat de geheime diensten, reguliere westerse media, politici, 'deskundigen' en rechtse denktanks vertellen over de Russische inval in Oekraïne en wat daar verder is gebeurd en gebeurt, ondanks dat het meeste als je reinste kul naar de prullenbak moet worden verwezen..... Ongelofelijk!!!  

Julian Assange is het grootste westerse slachtoffer van de westerse wil om de door de VS en andere westerse landen begane oorlogsmisdaden te verbergen. Censuur van zijn via derden verkregen gelekte informatie was niet mogelijk, daar het op WikiLeaks was geplaatst. Vandaar dat men hem in feite eerst dwong te vluchten in de ambassade van Ecuador en hem daar later arresteerde om hem jarenlang in isolatie op te sluiten >> een heel smerige manier van martelen, die mensen geestelijk en lichamelijk kapotmaakt (in de VS worden zo'n 120.000 mensen in isolatiefolter gehouden, een groot deel zelfs al meer dan 10 jaar en dan durft dat land andere landen te verwijten mensenrechtenschendingen te begaan, terwijl het de grootste gevangenispopulatie ter wereld heeft, waarvan de gekleurde gevangenen in verhouding het grootste deel uitmaken.....)

Eén ding is zeker: de reguliere westerse media brengen met de regelmaat van de klok fake news (nepnieuws) en desinformatie en als eerder aangehaald >> op een manier die niet anders kan worden gezien dan als een poging tot hersenspoeling van zoveel mogelijk mensen, sterker nog die poging lukt nog steeds, al moet gezegd wordend dat het vertrouwen van de westerse volkeren in die media steeds verder achteruit kachelt. Het zwaar lullige neveneffect is dat men nu de desinformatie gebracht door extreem rechts ofwel fascisten wel vertrouwt, zonder als eerder met de reguliere media zich ook maar één seconde af te vragen of wat men leest, hoort of ziet wel de werkelijkheid weergeeft.... Niet vreemd dan ook dat het fascisme in de westerse landen steeds meer macht vergaart en bijvoorbeeld de fascisten in de EU-lidstaten zijn afgestapt van de idee om de EU de nek om te draaien, maar nu proberen ook in het Europese parlement de grootste fractie te worden, om zo de bruine valse ideologie tot de grootste te maken.....

Overt Propaganda and Covert “Fake News” Playbooks

Democratic governments have long run dual-track propaganda operations – overt strategic communications and covert psychological warfare – to shape narratives at home and abroad. Institutions like the BBC World Service (UK) and Voice of America (US) were traditional overt outlets, broadcasting state-sponsored viewpoints globally as instruments of “public diplomacy”. Meanwhile, intelligence agencies and military psyops units engaged in deniable “black” operations: planting false stories, running sockpuppet personas online, and orchestrating astroturf campaigns to manipulate public opinion. These tactics, refined over decades, show systemic continuity from the 1990s to today’s AI-driven info wars.

To trace this evolution, we begin in the Gulf War era, when orchestrated propaganda like the infamous “Kuwaiti incubator baby” hoax helped justify war, and follow through the Iraq War and War on Terror, where military and intelligence services blurred lines between truth and deception. We then examine the social media battleground of the 2010s, including data-driven psy-ops (e.g. Cambridge Analytica) and secret units like GCHQ’s JTRIG, culminating in today’s AI-enabled cognitive warfare doctrines. Along the way, we identify key agencies, military units, private contractors, techniques, budgets, and narratives – highlighting how Western governments’ “fake news” playbooks have adapted with technology yet persisted across administrations.

1990s: Gulf War PR Stunts and Early Disinformation Campaigns

The Gulf War (1990–91) set the template for modern strategic deception. In October 1990, a 15-year-old Kuwaiti known as “Nayirah” gave tearful testimony to the U.S. Congress claiming Iraqi troops had ripped babies from incubators in Kuwait – a shocking atrocity story that was entirely fabricated.

It was later revealed Nayirah was the Kuwaiti ambassador’s daughter, coached by PR giant Hill & Knowlton under a $10–12 million contract from Kuwait’s government-in-exil. The firm’s focus groups had found that atrocity propaganda — especially the image of infants left to die — would be the most effective way to sway U.S. public opinion to support war. President George H.W. Bush repeated the incubator tale numerous times as rationale for intervention (en.wikipedia.org).

As Harper’s publisher John MacArthur, who exposed the ruse, explained: “Hill & Knowlton selected her as a persuasive witness… it was all part of a campaign to turn Saddam Hussein into Adolf Hitler. They felt they couldn’t sell the Gulf War without this.” (democracynow.org). The Gulf War featured tightly controlled media, military press pools, and PSYOP teams shaping coverage – foreshadowing the fusion of PR with military info-war.

Meanwhile, overt channels like VOA and BBC World Service played their soft-power role. The BBC World Service (funded by the UK Foreign Office) and Voice of America (under the U.S. Information Agency) broadcast pro-Western news globally, legitimizing coalition actions. But covert manipulation lurked behind mainstream media as well. In 1999, during NATO’s Kosovo campaign, CNN and NPR hosted interns from the U.S. Army’s 4th Psychological Operations Group inside their newsrooms. Though the networks claimed the soldiers only did “menial tasks,” critics noted the ethical peril of military propaganda staff embedded in media during wartime. This blurred media-military line showed how information warriors tried to influence news at source – a practice that sparked outrage once revealed and was quickly halted (theguardian.com).

By the late 1990s, Western intelligence agencies were running covert influence campaigns to set the stage for future conflicts. Notably, Britain’s MI6 orchestrated “Operation Mass Appeal” – a secret propaganda drive to seed news stories about Iraq’s supposed WMD programs. Starting in 1997, MI6 agents selectively passed dubious intelligence about Saddam’s chemical and nuclear weapons to media outlets worldwide, aiming to “gain public support for sanctions or military action in Iraq.” A senior UK official later admitted MI6 was “at the heart” of this campaign (though he euphemistically claimed the goal was only to publicize facts the “public needed to know” about Saddam’s arsenal).

Former UN inspector Scott Ritter, whom MI6 tried to recruit, said the goal was clearly to “convince the public that Iraq was a far greater threat than it actually was” by feeding journalists exaggerated reports from “western intelligence” sources. Many of those planted stories – e.g. lurid claims of underground WMD labs – turned out to be “garbage” falsehoods. This black propaganda effort to hype the Iraqi threat in the late ‘90s shows early use of fake news by Five Eyes intelligence to shape a pro-war narrative – a direct precursor to the flawed WMD dossier controversy in 2002/03 (archive.globalpolicy.org).

Key Players & Techniques (1990s): The Gulf War demonstrated the power of outsourced propaganda specialists (Hill & Knowlton, Rendon Group) working with government clients to create viral lies. Intelligence services refined “public diplomacy” vs. “black ops” duality – funding reputable broadcasts on one hand, while secretly feeding disinformation to news outlets on the other. In this era, influence operations still relied on traditional media (TV, print) and human dramatization (staged testimony), but the template of deceptive strategic communications had been set.

2000s: War on Terror – Information Operations Go Covert and Contracted

After 9/11, the U.S. and UK dramatically expanded their psychological operations (PSYOPS) and propaganda budgets under the banner of the “War on Terror.” New agencies and military units were created to wage an “Information War” against Al-Qaeda, the Iraqi regime, and other targets – often blurring truth and fiction. In late 2001 the Pentagon stood up the Office of Strategic Influence (OSI), a specialized department to coordinate global psyops in support of the War on Terror. OSI’s mandate included influencing foreign media and audiences with messaging – even planting “black propaganda”(misleading information) abroad, which could then “be picked up by American newspapers” and influence the U.S. public as well.

After press leaks in 2002 that OSI might spread false stories, an embarrassed Defense Secretary Rumsfeld announced OSI’s closure – but then pointedly remarked that he only killed the name, not the mission. “I’ll give you the corpse... You can have the name, but I’m gonna keep doing every single thing that needs to be done,” Rumsfeld said. True to that vow, the Pentagon’s influence operations continued unabated under other guises. (Indeed, by 2005 it emerged the U.S. military was secretly paying Iraqi journalists to run pro-American stories, vindicating Rumsfeld’s wink that OSI’s work never really stopped (en.wikipedia.org).

During the U.S.-led Iraq War (2003–2011), psychological warfare went into overdrive. Both Washington and London disseminated questionable intelligence to justify the 2003 invasion (e.g. Tony Blair’s notorious “dodgy dossier” on Iraqi WMD). Once the war began, the Pentagon and UK Ministry of Defence enlisted private PR contractors to manage and manipulate the news. The Rendon Group – a PR firm that had helped create the Iraqi National Congress – was hired to handle media for the Iraq interim authority. Another contractor, the Lincoln Group, received multi-million Pentagon contracts to secretly plant U.S.-authored articles in Iraqi newspapers praising coalition achievements.

These stories, written by American military “information operations” teams, were translated into Arabic and passed off as independent journalism – a covert propaganda effort masking U.S. government authorship. Dozens of such articles – e.g. “Iraqis Insist on Living Despite Terrorism” – ran in Iraqi media, often with paid placement. Internal Pentagon critics warned this violated core principles of a free press and blurred the line between factual Public Affairs and deceptive PsyOps. An unnamed senior Pentagon official lamented: “We’re breaking all the first principles of democracy when we’re doing this” (latimes.com).

Yet the Information Operations Task Force in Baghdad defended the program as vital to counter insurgent propaganda. This militarization of the marketplace of ideas prompted investigations, and the Pentagon inspector general eventually (in 2006) ordered a stop to covertly paying for Iraqi news coverage (en.wikipedia.org).

The UK government ran parallel efforts. In Basra and southern Iraq, British military “Media Ops” teams worked to shape local sentiment (for example, setting up local radio stations and placing friendly content). Britain’s covert propaganda from the late ’90s (Mass Appeal) had helped lay the groundwork for public support of the war (archive.globalpolicy.org). During the conflict, London relied on both internal resources (psychological operations units of the British Army) and contractors. One extraordinary example was the Pentagon’s hiring of Bell Pottinger, a British PR firm known for shady clients, to execute a top-secret propaganda campaign in Iraq.

Between 2004 and 2008, Bell Pottinger was paid over $500 million by the US Department of Defense to produce television segments and Fake Extremist Videos. Working alongside U.S. military psyop officers at Camp Victory, Baghdad, Bell Pottinger’s team made spoof Al-Qaeda propaganda films and even scripted news segments in Arabic that were released to Middle Eastern media without attribution. One Bell Pottinger “black ops” project involved crafting fake Al-Qaeda recruitment videos – using actual insurgent footage – and distributing them on CDs for U.S. Marines to scatter during raids.

These CDs had a hidden code that pinged a Google Analytics account when played on a computer, allowing U.S. intel to track the location of viewers by IP address. If a disc “phoned home” from, say, Iran or Syria, it tipped off analysts to a potential extremist connection. Bell Pottinger’s covert content had to be approved by top U.S. commanders – Gen. David Petraeus and even the White House signed off on some products – underscoring the high-level coordination between private contractors and government in modern propaganda. (When this secret operation eventually leaked in 2016, it caused a scandal about the Pentagon outsourcing disinformation (thebureauinvestigates.com).

A note of caution: if you think the Pentagon does this only to “them,” you will be disappointed.

Building the Propaganda Machine: By the late 2000s, specialized military units and funds for influence warfare had grown exponentially. The U.S. Army’s 4th Psychological Operations Group (based at Ft. Bragg) and equivalent units in each command were active on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan – not only targeting local populations but sometimes U.S. audiences (despite legal prohibitions). In 2008 it emerged that the Pentagon had been feeding talking points to retired U.S. generals who appeared as “military analysts” on TV news – effectively paying U.S. pundits for favorable coverage, a practice the GAO condemned as “covert propaganda” (latimes.com).

Both the CIA and military also employed “perception management” tactics at home. A notable UK parallel was the revelation that MI6’s propaganda unit (possibly Joint Intelligence Committee’s “Rockingham cell”) had ties with certain journalists and even weapons expert Dr. David Kelly to push the Iraq WMD narrative (archive.globalpolicy.org). When Kelly died in 2003 under somewhat suspicious circumstances, amid the outing of the dodgy dossier, it highlighted the dangerous intersection of intelligence, propaganda, and politics. Former UK minister Norman Baker, whom I interviewed wrote a book about this case.

Budgets & Scale: Though much is classified, available figures hint at the scale. The Pentagon’s “information operations” budget reportedly hit $580 million by 2009, a huge jump from the 1990s (thebureauinvestigates.com). Bell Pottinger’s $500M contract and Lincoln Group’s multi-year contracts (one was $120M over 5 years) are proxies for how heavily the U.S. invested in propaganda in Iraq (thebureauinvestigates.com, latimes.com). The UK MOD’s spend was smaller but significant: e.g. a £40M media campaign to win hearts in Afghanistan, and quietly funding projects like the Integrity Initiative (covered below) with a few million pounds a year.

In summary, the 2000s War on Terror period saw overt messaging (“we’re bringing democracy”) accompanied by covert distortion. Governments relied on private firms as force multipliers – effectively mercenaries in the info-war. Many “plays” from the 1990s (false atrocity tales, planted news, front groups) were redeployed, just on a larger, digital-connected scale.

2010s: The Social Media Battlefield – From Sockpuppets to Cambridge Analytica

The rise of social media in the 2010s fundamentally changed the propaganda landscape. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube became the new battlegrounds for hearts and minds – and Five Eyes governments rushed to adapt. This era saw the creation of dedicated cyber influence units and the enlistment of Big Data analytics to conduct psychological operations with unprecedented precision. Techniques like behavioral microtargeting, bot swarms, and deep-fake trolling emerged, and practices once used only abroad started bleeding into domestic politics.

Pentagon’s Sockpuppet Army: In 2011, it came to light that the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had launched a program to manipulate social media discourse covertly. Dubbed Operation Earnest Voice (OEV), this initiative developed an “online persona management” software enabling each operator to control up to 10 fake identities on social platforms. The objective was to flood forums and social networks with pro-American commentary, counter anti-U.S. narratives, and create the illusion of grassroots support – a false consensus engineered by trolls on the U.S. payroll.

A 2011 CENTCOM contract with a California tech company specified that each fake persona be “securely separated”(with unique backstory, IP address, language skills) so as to be “undetectable by even sophisticated adversaries.” Up to 50 U.S. operatives would engage 24/7 out of MacDill Air Force Base (home of CENTCOM), targeting online discussions in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto and other languages – explicitly not English, as U.S. law bars propagandizing Americans.

The multi-year program, part of the expanded OEV, grew into a $200 million effort used across the Middle East and South Asia. CENTCOM brass defended it as vital to “counter extremist ideology and propaganda”, but critics noted the uncomfortable comparison to China’s “50-cent army” of Internet trolls. The precedent was set: the U.S. military openly acquired the ability to conduct secret social media psychological warfare, foreshadowing today’s bot-driven influence operations (theguardian.com).

GCHQ’s “Dirty Tricks” Bureau: Not to be outdone, the UK’s signals intelligence agency GCHQ stood up the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG) – a covert unit dedicated to offensive online operations. JTRIG’s mission, per leaked Snowden documents (2013), was to “destroy, deny, degrade and disrupt” enemies via the internet. Its toolbox included an array of “dirty tricks”: injecting false material onto the web to discredit targets, launching denial-of-service attacks on activist forums, deploying “honey traps” (luring targets into compromising situations), and spreading deception by “pushing stories” on social media.

By 2010, JTRIG’s “Online Covert Action” propaganda was a “major part of GCHQ’s operations.” Slides published by journalists described how JTRIG could mass message on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr to plant narratives. In essence, a state-sponsored troll farm, JTRIG targeted not only hostile foreign actors (terror groups, Iran, etc.) but sometimes engaged in political interference at home. One known JTRIG target was the Anonymous hacktivist collective, which GCHQ attacked with the same DDoS methods Anonymous itself was accused of (en.wikipedia.org). The JTRIG revelations caused a stir because they confirmed Western agencies were using tactics indistinguishable from the authoritarian regimes they criticize – including false flag operations (posting material online and blaming it on someone else) and strategic forgeries.

As one commentator put it, “Who would trust a government to wield these techniques?” when they entail the very manipulation and deceit that undermine the integrity of the internet. Importantly, GCHQ operated JTRIG in close coordination with the NSA and other Five Eyes partners (network.progressivetech.org), suggesting that the U.S., Canada, Australia, and NZ had access to similar online manipulation capabilities.

UK’s 77th Brigade and Domestic Influence: The British Army in 2015 created the 77th Brigade, a dedicated “information warfare” unit drawing personnel from both regular and reserve forces. Operational from April 2015, 77th Brigade’s mandate is psychological operations and “non-lethal engagement.” It openly acknowledges using “social media such as Twitter and Facebook to influence populations and behavior.”

According to Prof David Miller, whom I interviewed and who studies British propaganda, the 77th is “involved in manipulation of the media, including using fake online profiles.” This unit notably blurs the foreign/domestic line. In theory, its efforts target hostile states and extremist ideologies abroad; in practice, leaks showed 77th Brigade soldiers monitored UK citizens’ social media posts about COVID-19 and Brexit. During the pandemic, 77th Brigade worked with the Cabinet Office Rapid Response Unit to combat “disinformation” – which included scraping public social media data of British citizens to gauge sentiment.

While the government insists no individuals were targeted and only “publicly available data” was used, civil liberties groups were alarmed at an army unit surveilling and intervening in domestic discourse. In one eyebrow-raising case, it emerged that a Twitter executive for Middle East news was also a 77th Brigade reservist, raising concerns of social media platforms being entangled with state psyops. Budget figures indicate how London ramped up info-war investment: 77th Brigade’s cost nearly doubled from £7.6M in 2015 to £14.5M by 2023. Alongside GCHQ’s JTRIG and MI6’s efforts, the 77th Brigade forms part of a matrix of British influence operationsspanning military, intelligence, and diplomatic organs (en.wikipedia.org).

The Cambridge Analytica Bombshell: Perhaps the most consequential development of the 2010s was the weaponization of Facebook-driven “psychographic” propaganda in domestic elections, exemplified by Cambridge Analytica (CA). This UK-based data analytics firm (an offshoot of the longstanding defense contractor SCL Group) brought techniques “from established military methodology – information operations – and turned them on the US electorate.” CA harvested data on tens of millions of social media users and used it to micro-target political ads and messages based on individual psychological profiles. Whistleblower Christopher Wylie, who helped found CA, described it as Steve Bannon’s “psychological warfare mindf**k tool” built to exploit American voters’ fears and biases (theguardian.com).

This marked a disturbing boomerang of psyops: methods honed in counter-insurgency and marketing campaigns abroad were now deployed in Western democracies for electoral advantage. CA’s parent, SCL, had deep ties to Five Eyes militaries – it had run NATO PSYOP training and even held UK MoD contracts, with access to classified material. In 2012 SCL received glowing praise from a British Army psyops unit for training it delivered The MoD said it would “have no hesitation” hiring SCL again (theguardian.com).

Essentially, SCL functioned as a bridge between military psyops and political consulting. Cambridge Analytica (founded 2013-14 with funding from U.S. billionaire Robert Mercer) went on to work on the 2016 Brexit referendum and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, claiming credit for swinging both. Internal documents showed CA had compiled psychological profiles on 230 million Americans and was pitching its capabilities to the U.S. Pentagon as well. “It’s like Nixon on steroids,” Wylie recalled thinking, alarmed that a private firm with “military-grade” psywar toolswas influencing elections and seeking defense contracts at the same time (theguardian.com).

CA became infamous when news broke in 2018 that it illicitly obtained Facebook data on 50+ million users to refine its targeting (theguardian.com). The scandal underscored how advanced computational propaganda – combining Big Data, behavioral science, and AI algorithms – had outpaced election laws and ethical norms. Western governments, which had fostered these techniques for counter-terror and foreign ops, seemed caught off guard when they hit home.

Five Eyes Collaboration & Imitation: Throughout the 2010s, the Five Eyes partners often worked in tandem on influence campaigns or mirrored each other’s initiatives. The Integrity Initiative, exposed in 2018, was a British-run but Western-wide network of academics, journalists, and former officials covertly funded to counter “disinformation” (mostly aimed at Russia). Leaked files showed this project, funded by the UK Foreign Office’s £100 million global fake news fund (medium.com), maintained clusters of influencers across Europe and North America and ran social media accounts that not only tackled Kremlin propaganda but also attacked UK opposition politicians it deemed too pro-Russia. The scandal embarrassed London – a state-funded “anti-fake news” unit itself engaged in partisan information warfare – and Integrity Initiative was reined in after revelations in Parliament (theguardian.com).

Canada too entered the fray: in 2017 Ottawa created a Rapid Response Mechanism to coordinate with G7 allies against foreign disinformation, and by 2020 the Canadian Forces were training propaganda officers in methods drawn from SCL/Cambridge Analytica. Shockingly, in 2020 Canadian military leadership planned a domestic propaganda initiative – without political authorization – aiming to “influence the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors” of Canadian citizens regarding the pandemic. They even carried out a trial run by forging a letter about wolves on the loose in Nova Scotia, which sparked public panic when locals believed a wolf threat was real. When these activities came to light, Canada’s top brass admitted “errors” and canceled the domestic psyop program. The episode illustrated how tools of influence honed in Afghanistan (the plan even included loudspeaker trucks blaring messages were being considered for use on home soil – a slippery slope that other Five Eyes nations have begun to navigate as well (pressprogress.ca).

In sum, the 2010s witnessed a dramatic expansion of the propaganda playbook: from traditional media to social networks, from broad messaging to micro-targeted “psychographic” appeals, and from clear foreign targets to the gray zone of domestic influence. Key continuities persisted – government-affiliated “front” organizations, hired-gun PR firms, and intelligence units in the shadows – but now supercharged by data analytics and global connectivity. With these trends, the stage was set for the next frontier: AI-driven cognitive warfare.

2020s: Cognitive Warfare and AI – A New Era of Synthetic Propaganda

As of the mid-2020s, Five Eyes governments openly acknowledge that the “cognitive domain” – the realm of beliefs, perceptions, and decision-making – is a battlespace in its own right. NATO and allied militaries are developing formal doctrines for Cognitive Warfare, which NATO’s strategy office defines as operations to “affect attitudes and behaviours” by manipulating the information flows and perceptions of individuals and societies. In practice, this means integrating the tactics of cyber, psyops, influence and deception into a holistic approach to “weaponize brain processes.” A NATO-sponsored study in 2021 warned that “whole-of-society manipulation has become a new norm, with human cognition now a critical realm of warfare” (act.nato.int).

The U.S. Department of Defense stood up an Influence and Perception Management Office in 2022 to coordinate “sensitive messaging, deception and other operations in the information environment” (en.wikipedia.org). These moves suggest Western militaries anticipate facing – and possibly employing – AI-generated disinformation, deepfakes, and algorithmic propaganda in future conflicts, - against their own populations.

Already in recent years, we’ve seen glimpses of AI in influence ops. “Deepfake” videos (AI-generated synthetic media) have been used by adversaries – for instance, a deepfaked video of Ukraine’s president surrendering was briefly propagated by pro-Russian channels in 2022. To counter such threats, DARPA and similar Western R&D agencies are investing in deepfake detection and “semantic forensics.” But just as the West pioneers AI for defense, it may also leverage it for offense. Analysts speculate about AI-curated bot armies that can generate convincing personas at scale, tailored memes, or even engage targets one-on-one via chatbots – essentially automating the sockpuppet tactics of Operation Earnest Voice on a mass scale. Documents from the NATO Innovation Hub discuss using AI to identify cognitive vulnerabilities in target audiences and precisely exploit biases and “reflexive control” – a sign that both understanding and weaponizing the human psyche is on the agenda (act.nato.int, ie.edu).

Five Eyes states remain cagey about offensive AI psyops, but their focus on “cognitive security” is clear. Canada’s Defence Department, for example, published a paper on “Defending Canada against cognitive warfare,” noting that adversaries seek to “manipulate or control how people react to information” and urging democratic governments to strengthen societal resilience (canada.ca).

Implicit is the understanding that the same tools can be wielded by state actors. The UK and U.S. continue to run “influence exercises”: in 2022, Twitter disclosed it had removed networks of accounts attributed to U.S. and UK military info ops pushing Western narratives in the Middle East – a rare peek at covert campaigns that companies usually uncover tied to Russia or China. Clearly, some Five Eyes information efforts have spilled into public view in the social media space, prompting debates about oversight.

Yet, much remains secret. Budgets for these activities are often buried in classified annexes. We know that the US State Department’s Global Engagement Center now receives tens of millions annually to counter disinformation, and the UK’s Counter Disinformation Unit similarly scans the infosphere – but what offensive ops continue under the radar? The continuity of institutions suggests an enduring capability. For instance, the U.S. Agency for Global Media(successor to the Cold War-era USIA) still runs VOA and Radio Free Europe with ~$800M/year funding, while the State Dept and CIA have quietly restarted influence programs in Central/Eastern Europe “to compete with Russian media”. The UK’s Foreign Office has funneled funds into projects in the Baltics and Balkans to “pre-bunk” disinfo and promote NATO narratives, often contracting the very same NGOs and firms involved in prior ops.

What has changed is the tempo and technology. Social media monitoring and AI sentiment analysis allow real-time tracking of narrative trends. Bots and troll farms can amplify messages or harass critics at scale (Western governments accuse adversaries of this, but have been caught using bots themselves). High-quality fake videos or audio can be produced on demand – potentially to impersonate leaders or stage events virtually. The ethical threshold for using such tactics is a subject of intense debate within democracies. If an AI-generated false story could prevent a population from opposing a war, would our governments deploy it? The existence of units like JTRIG and 77th Brigade – and their known exploits – indicates the hurdle isn’t whether to use deception, only how far to go.

Conclusion: Continuities and Questions

Over the span of 30+ years, UK, US, and allied (Five Eyes) information operations have evolved in form – from printed forgeries and TV spectacles to Twitter personas and deepfakes – yet the playbook shows striking continuities. Astroturfing, or creating a fake grassroots voice, appears in every era: from a bogus Kuwaiti girl witness (democracynow.org), to phantom online supporters of war policies (theguardian.com). Front organizations and contractors recur as well: cut-outs like “Citizens for a Free Kuwait” in 1990, the Lincoln Group in Iraq (latimes.com), or the Integrity Initiative in Europe (theguardian.com) allow governments to push narratives at arm’s length. There is a consistent pattern of narrative laundering – seeding information through ostensibly independent outlets (be it newspapers or Facebook pages) that actually trace back to state actors.

The institutional actors also show continuity. The U.S. CIA, Pentagon, and State Department have, in various combinations, driven these efforts since the Cold War – sometimes in turf battles with each other, but overall expanding the reach of “strategic influence.” The UK’s MI6, GCHQ, and Army psyops units likewise have adapted but never stopped their influence missions (even after periodic scandals). Notably, when one entity gets exposed (e.g. OSI in 2002 en.wikipedia.org, Integrity Initiative in 2018 theguardian.com), authorities tend to rebrand or relocate the function rather than end it. Rumsfeld’s candid admission – “I’m gonna keep doing every single thing that needs to be done” (en.wikipedia.org) – could serve as a motto for this apparatus.

Narratives pushed by these operations have varied with geopolitical winds: humanitarian intervention in the ’90s (Kuwait incubators, Balkan atrocities), WMDs and War on Terror in the 2000s (Iraqi WMD lies archive.globalpolicy.org, “liberation” themes), counter-terror and counter-Russia/China in the 2010s, and now defense of democracy vs. autocracy in the 2020s. But underneath, the methods – selective truths, exaggerations, outright lies; amplification of fear; personal smears (e.g. labeling dissidents as foreign “useful idiots” (theguardian.com), and appealing to emotion over reason – remain fundamentally consistent. Even as officials publicly decry “fake news” and disinformation, their security agencies privately study how to perfect it.

This trajectory raises crucial questions: What oversight should exist for state-run psychological operations, especially when they target the domestic public or allied nations? How can one distinguish between legitimate strategic communications and unethical manipulation? In open societies, these activities walk a tightrope. Whistleblowers and investigative journalists have been key to exposing excesses – from the Nayirah hoax (democracynow.org) to the Facebook data scandal – yet much remains hidden under classification. The Five Eyes alliance, originally forged for signals intelligence sharing, has clearly extended into sharing of influence tactics and tools, making accountability even more complicated across borders.

As AI and cognitive warfare initiatives accelerate, the risk is a propaganda arms race where truth becomes ever harder to discern. Democratic governments argue their psychological operations are intended to protect citizens by countering extremist or foreign propaganda (act.nato.int), and that they uphold “truthful” information – as the Pentagon oddly claimed even of its covert Iraq propaganda (thebureauinvestigates.com).

But history shows many examples where they have crossed the line into deception and manipulation of their own people. The continuity of these playbooks suggests that once a tactic is normalized in war, it can migrate into use in peace – unless strong ethical firewalls exist.

In conducting this investigation, we see that “fake news” as a tool of statecraft did not begin with Russian trolls or the Trump era; Western democracies have been both victors and violators in the information war for decades. The techniques pioneered from the Gulf War through to Cambridge Analytica’s micro-targeting (theguardian.com) form a legacy that today’s information warriors – human and AI – continue to draw upon. Understanding this evolution is vital for citizens to critically evaluate media narratives and demand transparency. The past 30 years demonstrate that technologies change, but the aims of state-sponsored influence operations remain: to win hearts and minds by any means necessary – even at the cost of the truth.

One last thing:

No investigation into modern propaganda is complete without acknowledging **Unit 8200**, Israel’s elite signals intelligence corps. I could have included it, - but I didn’t because I didn’t want to make this report about Israel. Instead I will do a separate deep dive into this unit, which has become a blueprint in itself, – not just for electronic surveillance, but for information influence, behavioral engineering, and psychological warfare in the digital domain. Veterans of Unit 8200 now populate the top ranks of global cyber firms, AI startups, and predictive analytics companies.

The gravity of these facts can hardly be overstated and for me this justifies a focus report that has a closer look at Unit 8200. So all I can recommend is: stay tuned, subscribe and always look beyond the headlines.

*  De Eerste Golfoorlog was de oorlog van Irak tegen Iran, waarbij Saddam Hoessein een stuk grondgebied van Iran wilde toevoegen aan zijn grondgebied van Irak. Die oorlog duurde van 22 september 1980 tot 20 augustus 1988. Een ander schandalig voorbeeld is de oorlog van de VS tegen het eiland Granada in 1983, een eiland dat een 'leger' had bestaande uit 1.500 militairen..... Het VS leger werd aanvankelijk geprezen dat het zo snel de boel onder controle had, maar de bevolking was helemaal niet blij (in veel westerse media stelt men dat het volk blij was met het ingrijpen door de VS, echter dat is wensdenken van de grote witte kolonist) Bij deze laffe overval, want dat was het eigenlijk, heeft de VS 160 bewoners vermoord..... Daarnaast kwamen 19 VS militairen om het leven, niet vermoord door het 'leger' van Grenada, maar door eigen vuur.... De destijds president van de VS, de mislukte Hollywood 'coiboy' Reagan heeft later zijn excuses voor dit ingrijpen gemaakt bij de premier van Groot-Brittannië, destijds: hare kwaadaardigheid Thatcher. Naast alle door de VS begonnen oorlogen na 1945, is ook de invasie van Panamees grondgebied nog steeds zwaar omstreden, geen reden om vooral in het westen de VS te blijven steunen en daarbij lepelt men als excuus daarvoor gebruikt men NB de valse en lamme argumentatie van deze al sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog grootste terreurentiteit ter wereld..... Sterker nog: veel van de andere westerse landen steunden met militairen de meeste van deze illegale oorlogen.... Vanaf de proefnemingen met de atoom- en waterstofbom op de Japanse steden Hiroshima en Nagasaki, heeft de VS tot het jaar 2000 het ongelofelijk grote aantal van 20 miljoen mensen vermoord!! Nogmaals: met steun van de meeste andere westerse landen en deels met de militaire medewerking van andere NAVO-lidstaten..... Deze eeuw zijn er, zoals in het begin van dit bericht al aangegeven, nog eens 5 miljoen vermoorde mensen aan toegevoegd.....
