Cruiseschepen vernietigen een groot deel van de aarde

Het was gisteren Wereldoceanendag, ofwel ik loop met het volgende schrijven weer eens achter: een schrijven van Stand.earth (Greenpeace) van gisteravond vestigt de aandacht op de cruiseschepen die in enorme aantallen en in hoog tempo de zeeën en oceanen van ons aller thuis de aarde naar god helpen...... (en dat samen met alle andere op met stookolie gevoede motoren van schepen) Oceanen die zo belangrijk zijn voor het leven op aarde en die het grootste deel van de aarde bedekken.....

                                      

Buiten diezelfde wateren varen de cruiseschepen op olie, die de lucht nog sterker vervuilt dan de olie waarop deze schepen binnen de territoriale wateren de lucht van landen vervuilen, een vervuiling die zoals je begrijpt uitermate slecht is voor de volksgezondheid in havensteden....... (waaraan toegevoegd moet worden dat uit onderzoek werd geconstateerd, een onderzoek van ik meen 2 jaar geleden, dat deze schepen niet zelden ook binnen die wateren van landen op de veel dikkere smerige olie varen......)

Met die dikke smerige olie zorgen vooral cruiseschepen die naar de arctische wateren varen (van Noord- en Zuidpool) voor het letterlijk vervuilen van ijs en sneeuw, de uitstoot van die schepen zorgt daar voor het achterlaten van een bijna zwarte laag, zodat dit ijs en de aanwezige sneeuw nog sneller afsmelten dan al het geval was (en is) door de klimaatverandering, dit daar donker gekleurde gebieden nu eenmaal veel makkelijker warmte opnemen dan witte gebieden.... Bovendien bevat deze olie zwavel, ook al 'lekker voor het milieu....' (zwavel dat al lang niet meer mag voorkomen in diesel voor auto's...)

Alsof er niet zo iets als het vervuilen van zee en lucht bestaat, zet men op die schepen vuilnis overboord (meestal buiten de territoriale wateren)...... Met het vuil dat overboord wordt gezet worden ook nog eens ecosystemen onder water om zeep geholpen, terwijl de neerslaande luchtvervuiling de oceanen ziek maken en de productie van zuurstof verder bemoeilijken..... De oceanen zijn dan ook de grootste producenten van zuurstof, bovendien nemen de oceanen CO2 op, echter die opname is aan een grens gebonden en die grens zijn we nu al akelig dicht benaderd......

Dan is er nog de vervuiling die de cruiseschepen in de havens produceren, immers deze scheepsmotoren mogen nooit uitgeschakeld worden, daar opstarten veel problemen kan geven en ook weer extra vervuilend is..... Deze schepen zijn in havens dan in feite ook fabrieken die de lucht in die steden aanzienlijk verzieken en jagen daarmee nogmaals de klimaatverandering verder aan...... 

Nog een cruise maken? Denk daar nog eens over na en zie wat er gebeurd als er een besmettelijke ziekte uitbreekt aan boord.....

Today is World Oceans Day. Now I get that this may sound like just another UN holiday, but it was created for an important reason: our oceans are under threat.

One of the most insidious culprits? Cruise ships.

Oceans provide most of the oxygen we breathe, they're a major source of our food and medicine, and help regulate our climate. But none of this has stopped cruise ships from treating our oceans as their personal dumping grounds, or from polluting fragile marine ecosystems...until now.

This World Oceans Day, we’ve joined forces with port communities, frontline activists, and organizations all over the world to shine a light on the dirty practices of the cruise industry and ramp up the pressure on cruise majors to clean up their act.

The shady practices of the cruise industry were recently thrust into the spotlight after reckless decisions from cruise executives led to tragic outbreaks of COVID-19 on board – with some passengers and crew remaining trapped at sea for months. This was just the latest example of the cruise industry’s profits-before-people approach gone terribly wrong. And this World Oceans Day, we aren’t going to let them off the hook.

What have we got planned today? All day we’re going to be inundating cruise executives with our messages on social media, and then at 12pm PT, we’re hosting the first-of-its kind global digital rally against cruise ship pollution. Live on the call, we plan to e-deliver a powerful petition with over 47,000 signatures from concerned citizens around the world – all calling on cruise majors to clean up their act before returning to our oceans.

Due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19, the cruise season is currently suspended in many parts of the world, and the industry’s reputation is in tatters over their disastrous response to this crisis.

If we can get our new video seen by tens of thousands of people around the world, we know it will catch the attention of cruise companies who are already anxious about boosting their bookings and desperate to save their struggling share price.

Het 'groenwassen' van de scheepvaart, of hoe autoriteiten doorgaan met het verkankeren van de aarde

'Greenwashing' of groenwassen is het zogenaamd verduurzamen van zaken zodat de argeloze burger denkt dat men goed bezig is, terwijl men in feite geen bliksem doet.... Met 'mooie woorden en beloften' doet men niets tegen de luchtvervuiling noch aan het afremmen van de klimaatverandering.....

De International Maritime Organization (IMO) heeft nieuwe regels voor de scheepvaart opgesteld, waarmee deze transportvorm niet langer gebruik zal maken van de meest smerige stookolie, waarvan het zavelgehalte maar liefst 3.500 keer zo groot is dan die van diesel voor auto's..... Eén dikke adder onder het gras: deze stookolie mag nog steeds gebruikt worden maar dan met een aanpassing >> een installatie om de uitstoot voor deze de lucht in verdwijnt zoveel mogelijk 'schoon te wassen' van zwavel....... Echter deze 'schoonwasserij' (in feite een dubbele 'greenwashing') gebeurt met zeewater en het met zwavel verontreinigde zeewater wordt vervolgens in zee geloosd, om daar haar vernietigend werk te doen......

Even een stap terug, dus voor het schoonwassen: Deze zwavel uitstoot is verantwoordelijk voor ademhalingsproblemen, hart en vaatziekten, longziekten en zorgt voor zure regen..... Je zal begrijpen dat met het lozen van zwavel de zeeën verder verziekt zullen worden, zo heeft zwavel desastreuze gevolgen voor klein zeeleven, belangrijk voor zelfs de grootste walvissen en op koraal heeft het ronduit een vernietigend effect..... Daarnaast zal niet alle zwavel uit de totale uitstoot worden gezuiverd en blijft de scheepvaart een belangrijke producent van luchtvervuiling en daarmee een aanjager van de klimaatverandering....

Er is maar één oplossing, deze zware stookolie moet in het geheel worden verboden en het groenwassen van de vuile uitstoot en andere zaken kan alleen worden goedgekeurd als deze olie wordt verboden en men het schoonwassen van de wat betere stookolie aan de regel bindt dat het afval niet in zee wordt geloosd!! 

Volgens een fiks aantal deskundigen moeten we binnen 10 jaar echt ter zake doende maatregelen treffen om de klimaatverandering nog enigszins af te remmen, met dit soort belachelijke oplossingen als het 'schoonwassen' van uitstoot komen we geen steek verder, blijkbaar interesseert dit het grofgraaigeteisem dat met een peperdure lobby invloed uitoefent op IMO, geen donder!! De centen gaan ver voor op het nalaten van een leefbare aarde aan de volgende generaties en op de gezondheid van de huidige generaties.....

De hoogste tijd dat politici, de grootverdieners in het bedrijfsleven en de grootaandeelhouders begrijpen dat zij mede verantwoordelijk zijn voor het verkankeren van de wereld.... Tijd ook dat dit soort figuren worden vervolgd voor hun misdaden, die in feite niet anders zijn dan misdaden tegen de menselijkheid!!

A sneaky loophole for the shipping industry

In the biggest shake-up the oil and shipping industry has seen for decades, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has just brought into effect a new law designed to significantly reduce the pollution produced by the world’s ships.
This should be cause for celebration, but pause the high-fives...there is a big loophole in the law that ships are using to cheat the system so they can continue using heavy fuel oil – one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth.

So, how are ships still able to get around the new IMO law?

The IMO law should effectively end the use of heavy fuel oils containing a high level of sulfur (3,500 times higher than the diesel used in cars, in fact). Sulfur emissions have been connected to respiratory and cardiovascular problems, lung disease, and acid rain. Until now, most ships have been fueling the majority of their operations with high-sulfur heavy fuel oil. Banning the use of this type of fuel would bring significant health benefits for people like you and me (and especially those of us living near the coast).

However, the IMO law still allows ships to use high-sulfur fuels if they install something called a ‘scrubber,’ or as they’re better described, an emissions cheat system. Shipping industry bigwigs lobbied the IMO to secure this loophole and exempt ships with scrubbers from having to switch to cleaner fuel. Concerns are rising about the ocean acidification and pollution these systems cause.

Picture it this way. Scrubbers are designed to ‘scrub’ the sulfur content from the ship’s exhaust. Most ships are currently installing the type of scrubber that does this by using seawater to remove the sulfur content. After minimal treatment, this contaminated, acidic wastewater is then discharged into the ocean, turning air pollution into water pollution instead.

The IMO says over 570,000 premature deaths will be prevented in the next 5 years by the introduction of its new law. But unless they crack down on this loophole, ships will continue to use cheap but ultra-dirty heavy fuel oil instead of switching to cleaner fuels. And they’ll be discharging their pollution overboard to match.

If the shipping industry were a country, it would be ranked between Germany and Japan as the sixth-largest contributor to CO2 emissions. nd yet the shipping industry’s climate emissions and environmental pollution often slip under the radar. That’s why for the past few years, the Stand.earth community has been hard at work exposing and cleaning up this little known sector of our global economy. We’ve been campaigning for a ban on the use of heavy fuel oils in the Arctic, and with the support of over 100,000 concerned people like you, have been working to hold repeat offenders like cruise giant Carnival Corporation to account.

The new IMO law is a step in the right direction when it comes to reducing the staggering emissions produced by the shipping industry. But without closing the loophole allowing emissions cheat systems like scrubbers, ship operators will just be turning a massive air pollution problem into yet another dangerous source of pollution being dumped into our oceans.
