Saoedische minister: Qatar moet de VS troepen in Syrië bekostigen, anders........ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

De bliksem is de Saoedische 'minister' van buitenlandse zaken (bij de gratie van MBS*), Adel al-Jabeir in de maffe bol geslagen. De idioot stelde dat Qatar de kosten moet dragen voor de illegale aanwezigheid van de VS in Syrië, daarnaast moet Qatar zelf troepen sturen naar Syrië....... Aan welke kant die troepen dan moeten vechten maakte al-Jabeir niet bekend, immers Saoedi-Arabië betaalt behalve IS, alle terreurgroepen in Syrië en heeft dat zelfs een tijdlang voor IS gedaan.... Bovendien heeft S-A (zoals de VS) deze terreurgroepen van wapens en voertuigen voorzien......

Al-Jabeir liet weten dat wanneer Qatar dit niet doet, de VS Qatar niet langer zal steunen en het land binnen een week zal vallen (door een inval van Saoedi-Arabië......).....

Professor Madawi al-Rasheed stelde terecht de vraag welke Golfstaat niet wordt beschermd door de VS, of welke Golfstaat niet wordt bewapend door de VS, of welke Golfstaat niet door de VS wordt geleid, of die niet is leeggeroofd door de VS??

Dan nog: hoe durft deze losgeslagen al-Jabeir internationaal nog iets op te merken, als je ziet dat Saoedi-Arabië zoals gezegd terreurgroepen financiert en godbetert een genocide uitvoert in buurland Jemen???

Nieuw voor mij is de wil van de Trump administratie om een Arabisch leger op poten te zetten met de legers van Saoedi-Arabië en die van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten (VAE), dit om de illegale taken van de VS over te nemen en stabiliteit te brengen in van IS bevrijdde gebieden....... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Alsof je een stel psychopathische moordenaars de verantwoording over de politie geeft......

Wanneer wordt Saoedi-Arabië eindelijk voor het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) gesleept? Dit land moet intussen verantwoordelijk zijn voor alleen in Jemen al meer dan 20.000 doden, dit door de hongersnood, cholera en difterie uitbraak, allen één op één te danken aan de blokkade van S-A en de VS en de oorlog die S-A voert tegen de sjiitische burgers van Jemen........ 

Qatar Should Pay for US Troops in Syria or Risk Downfall: Saudi Minister

(MEE) — The US government will stop protecting Qatar if the country doesn’t fund the American military venture in Syria, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister warned on Tuesday.

“Qatar has to pay for the US military’s presence in Syria and send its military forces there before the US president cancels the American protection of Qatar, which has an American military base on its grounds,” Adel al-Jubeir said in a statement.

Without American protection – or more specifically Al-Udeid, a key US military base in Qatar which hosts 10,000 troops – Al-Jubeir said Doha’s government “would fall in less than a week”.

The foreign minister’s comments come a week after Saudi Arabia said it would be willing to deploy troops to Syria as part of US-led efforts to stabilise the country.

The Trump administration has said it is seeking to assemble an Arab force, including Saudi Arabia and

the United Arab Emirates, to replace US troops and pay for the stabilisation and reconstruction of areas captured from the Islamic State militant group.

But analysts said Jubeir’s recommendation was politically motivated and unlikely to happen, with one calling it “a silly, silly suggestion”.

“How could Qatar pay for the United States when they are under a blockade?” Madawi Al-Rasheed, a visiting professor at the Middle East Centre at LSE, told Middle East Eye.

“And why pick on Qatar? Saudi Arabia were the ones who sponsored discussions to bring Syrian opposition under one umbrella against President Assad.”

She added: “This is just an admission of failure. It’s just a silly, silly suggestion. It comes out of desperation to implicate Qatar in Syria after Saudi Arabia were the ones funding and encouraging groups there in the first place,” she said.

Christopher Davidson, a reader in Middle East politics at Durham University, said that the Saudi foreign minister was “trying to throw the hot potato onto Doha’s lap”.

“Saudi Arabia and Qatar are both grappling with having to survive a new and more adept US administration that is keen to extract greater concessions from its ‘Gulf allies’ in return for continuing protection and international diplomatic support,” he said.

Neither Saudi Arabia nor Qatar want to be involved in Syria “as it would likely involve not only direct confrontation with Damascus-Tehran-Moscow axis forces, but also entanglement with some of the same extremist groups they themselves, or at least many of their wealthy private citizens, have recently funded and weaponised,” Davidson added.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been at loggerheads for years, but particularly since last June when the kingdom, along with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, cut diplomatic and trade ties with Doha, accusing the country of supporting terrorism. Qatar has denied those claims.

The emirate’s only land border was closed and all flights were banned to and from the country.

As a result of the blockade, foreign financing and resident private sector deposits reportedly fell by $40bn, but that was offset by cash injections from the central bank and Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, according to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report released in March.

The IMF said the blockade’s impact was “transitory” because new trade routes were quickly established and growth remained positive.

Madawi added: “Regardless [of the blockade], I think this is a trap for Qatar. Saudi Arabia and its allies have accused Qatar of terrorism, so under what mandate would Qatari troops go into Syria? And which side would they be on? The side of the rebels or of the regime?”

Er is momenteel een EU conferentie gaande over de wederopbouw van Syrië. WDR 5 meldde in het nieuws van 13.30 u. dat Duitsland een miljard wil geven voor de wederopbouw van Syrië (waarvan een deel voor de vluchtelingen in omliggende landen), waar de EU dit laat afhangen van 'een paar voorwaarden'.

Zo stelt de EU o.a. dat er eerst vrije verkiezingen moeten worden gehouden in Syrië, verkiezingen waarvan Assad en zijn Ba'ath partij moeten worden uitgesloten........ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! De oplichters in Brussel hebben wel een heel vreemde opvatting van 'vrije verkiezingen......' Trouwens hoe kunnen verkiezingen vrij zijn als men in het buitenland eisen stelt aan deze verkiezingen......

Daarmee is ook nog eens sprake van een illegale inmenging in binnenlandse aangelegenheden van een soevereine staat, een staat waarvan de regering in 2014 ook nog eens democratisch werd gekozen door een grote meerderheid van de kiezers, in door internationale waarnemers goedgekeurde verkiezingen >> iets dat onder meer door The Guardian middels 'false news', of zoals je wilt 'nepnieuws' werd en wordt ontkend.......)

Landen die Al Qaida, IS of de Taliban steunen kunnen met de vernieuwde Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) wetgeving, gesteund door Republikeinen en Democraten, simpel door de president als vijand kunnen worden aangemerkt, waarna deze kan besluiten het betreffende land (of zelfs landen) aan te vallen, pas na 60 dagen wordt er dan geëvalueerd...... Uiteraard zal men dan niet het onderste uit de kan halen en eisen dat de troepen worden teruggetrokken, immers je loopt dan al snel de kans te worden uitgemaakt voor laffe verrader van 'de heroïsche VS troepen (ofwel de grootste terreurorganisatie op aarde...).....

Bovendien kan de president ook nieuwe terreurgroepen aanwijzen als vijand in de oorlog tegen terreur...... In de lijst van 9 terreurgroepen die nu wordt gebruikt, is vreemd genoeg ook Al Qaida Syrië opgenomen, terwijl deze terreurgroep vorig jaar nog van de VS zwarte lijst met terreurgroepen werd gehaald, blijkbaar 'zijn de banden wat verwaterd', sinds dit feit bekend werd gemaakt........ SENATE PROPOSAL TO CONSTRAIN TRUMP’S WAR MAKING WOULD ACTUALLY EXPAND PERPETUAL WAR

A new authorization for the use of military force proposed by Democratic and Republican senators would further entrench the United States in endless war. It would also streamline the ability of President Donald Trump and future presidents to expand the “war on terrorism” to additional countries and broaden a list of “associated forces” that are “co-belligerents” of al-Qaida, the Taliban, or the Islamic State.

Under the proposed AUMF [PDF], which was drafted to replace the 2001 and 2002 AUMFs still in effect, military force against the Taliban, al-Qaida, ISIS, and “designated associated forces” is renewed.

On January 20, 2022, and every four years after, the president is to submit a report on the “use of military force,” which includes a “proposal to repeal, modify, or leave in place” the current AUMF.
It removes some of the ambiguity previously in the phrase “associated forces” by naming the groups: al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), al-Qaida in Syria (including al-Nusra), the Haqqani Network, and al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

When the president determines that a “new organization, person, or force is an associated force covered,” a report should be submitted to the “appropriate congressional committees and leadership.”

A similar procedure is to be followed when adding new foreign countries to the list of places where the U.S. is at war. “New” countries are any countries other than Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, and Libya.

The AUMF proposal was put forward by Republican Senator Bob Corker and Democratic Senator Tim Kaine* with the bipartisan support of Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Todd Young and Democratic Senators Chris Coons and Bill Nelson.

In 1973, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution as a response to the Vietnam War. The resolution was intended to ensure the President of the United States could only deploy U.S. military forces abroad through declarations of war, “statutory authorizations,” or in the case of a national emergency.

What the proposed AUMF would effectively do is cement Congress as the war clerk for the Executive Branch. It would represent a complete abdication of responsibility over matters of war, as granted by the separation of powers in U.S. government. The president would come to leaders of congressional committees with a report that is reviewed, filed, and updated accordingly, with Congress’ only task to make sure they can fit the latest war making into the parameters laid out for perpetual war.

Trump’s latest strikes against Syria renewed attention on Congress’ failure to assert authority over war making by the Executive Branch. Several Democrats, like Representative Nancy Pelosi, made process critiques and argued there must be an AUMF for Syria before Trump pursued more war. Yet, the proposed AUMF does not really deal with the issue of military action against sovereign countries.

It does not provide authority for the president to use military force against any nation state, but it also does not contemplate what Congress should do if the president is engaged in actions, like the strikes on Syria, which senators or representatives never approved.

Additionally, the proposed AUMF grandfathers in the war in Yemen, where the United States military has played an integral role in supporting a coalition led by Saudi Arabia that has brutally attacked Yemenis and blockaded civilians.

Senators Chris Murphy, Mike Lee, and Bernie Sanders attempted to force a vote on withdrawing U.S. military support for the war in Yemen because Congress has not authorized war in the country. Corker took great offense to this, and through the proposed AUMF, he and other senators are ensuring Murphy, Lee, and Sanders cannot challenge U.S. military action in Yemen again by retroactively approving war.

Out of 535 members of Congress, Democratic Representative Barbara Lee was the only person to vote against the 2001 AUMF. She previously opposed bombing Iraq in the 1990s and committing U.S. troops to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s intervention in Kosovo.

Lee declared, “This resolution, even though it was focused on the World Trade Center attack, is open-ended. It doesn’t have an exit strategy; it does not have any reporting requirements. And the president already has authority to use force [internationally for 60 days without congressional approval] under the War Powers Act. So what was this about?”

Her caution went unheeded by elected officials. The Executive Branch used the open-ended AUMF to develop a targeted assassination program, where the groups it believed it could attack with drones or other aircraft under the AUMF were kept entirely secret from the public.

Lee opposes the proposal from Corker and Kaine because she believes it will “continue our state of perpetual war.”

“Rather than reining in the Trump Administration’s blank check for war, the Corker-Kaine AUMF would continue all current military operations, allow any president to unilaterally expand our wars, and effectively consent to endless war by omitting any sunset date or geographic constraints for our ongoing operations. This legislation also further limits Congress’s role in war making by requiring a veto-proof majority to block military action from the president,” Lee declared.

Republican Senator Rand Paul also outlined his opposition to the proposed AUMF while he was on CNN on April 17. “It is a good idea to debate whether we should be at war or not. Unfortunately, the [AUMF] they’re putting forward actually expands the president’s ability to commit war.”

He continued, “For the first time, it will list six or seven groups that we’re at war with. If you remember, after 9/11, we were at war with those who attacked us and who aided and abetted them. But now, this is for the first time gonna codify six or seven groups, maybe 10-15 countries that we can be at war in. Really it’s limitless.”

“If we detect any of the groups having any activity in any country, the president can go to war there. He just has to submit a notice saying, hey guys, we’re now at war in a new country. And that to me is not a limitation. It’s an expansion of war making, and I think, a huge mistake,” Paul concluded.

Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley opposes the proposed AUMF for similar reasons. “This new AUMF has no sunset clause – meaning it can be used indefinitely by President Trump and his successors to continue expanding the scope and geography of U.S. military action around the world. The absence of a sunset clause all but guarantees that this AUMF will be stretched by the executive branch to avoid coming to Congress for future authorizations, which is completely unacceptable.”

“Even more concerning, this legislation allows the president to unilaterally expand the scope of the authorization, both in the specific groups being targeted and in the countries in which the United States takes military action. The clear constitutional vision was for Congress and Congress alone to have the authority to initiate war. This AUMF stands that on its head, giving the President that power and leaving Congress with the impossible task of overriding presidential actions.”

“I cannot support an authorization that gives a blank check for endless war and turns Congress’s power over to the president. The Senate should indeed debate a new AUMF, but it must be one that has built-in timelines, mandates congressional approval, and limits the scope of the conflict.”

That is, for the most part, the extent of public opposition to the proposed AUMF, as of April 22.
Its supporters, like former Democratic Party vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine, actually contend it will end the notion that the president has a “blank check to wage war.”

Democratic Senator Bill Nelson is gung-ho about the proposed AUMF, sounding like President George W. Bush’s administration in the days after 9/11.

“Terrorists groups such as ISIS pose a serious threat to our national security. This bill will give the president the clear legal authority he needs to target these groups in Iraq, Syria or anywhere else they may be hiding,” Nelson said.

Efforts to repeal and update the AUMF have occurred multiple times in the past decade. Most prominently, in 2015, President Barack Obama provided legislation for an AUMF that would cover strikes against ISIS. The proposal lacked limitations like this recent proposal. Congress never voted on the authorization, and Obama continued to rely on the 2001 AUMF to claim authority for military action.

“Over the last sixteen years, we have witnessed the consequences of unfettered executive power in matters of war,” Lee stated. “Instead of further endorsing perpetual war, we need to insist on an AUMF that is narrow, clearly defined, and respects Congress’s constitutional duty to debate and authorize military action.”

Senators appear to be appropriately concerned about the ways in which Trump could abuse his authority, unlike under the Obama administration. But that concern seems increasingly likely to translate into a measure that will transform Congress’ efforts to challenge the imperial presidency into even more of a charade.

De achtste Dag (film): één grote vergoelijking van fout financieel beleid na losbarsten bankencrisis 2008.....

Ongelofelijk hoe men tegenwoordig middels film en documentaires de geschiedenis vervalst, of het nu bijvoorbeeld om de illegale VS oorlogen tegen Vietnam, Panama, Nicaragua, Grenada, Afghanistan, Irak, Libie of Syrië gaat: de VS militairen en haar onderhorige collega's in de NAVO zijn de goede jongens en de rest van de wereld is geteisem dat optrekt tegen de VS.........

Ook op ander gebied zie je dit verschijnsel, zo waren gisteren op Radio1 (na 15.00 u.) de makers te horen van de film, of beter gezegd documentaire (die in een aantal bioscopen draait) 'De Achtste Dag'. Volgens de makers van de documentaire, de journalisten Yan Ting Yuen en Robert Kosters (Follow The Money, ofwel: FTM), hebben zij 'een diepgravend onderzoek' ingesteld naar het reilen en zeilen van de betrokkenen bij de bankencrisis van 2008 in Nederland en daar een 'film' over samengesteld. Of beter
gezegd hoe men niet of wel handelde op die crisis.....

De makers stelden dat figuren als PvdA oplichter Wouter Bos (destijds minister van Financiën), CDA zever Wellink (destijds directeur van De Nederlandse Bank) en CDA plork Balkenende (destijds godbetert premier van ons land) graag meewerkten aan de documentaire, waarvoor men 3 uur lang met deze verschillende hoofdrolspelers sprak, dit daar hen werd beloofd dat ze niet onderuit zouden worden gehaald...... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Nee het was geen heksenjacht, aldus de makers...... Jezus, hoe kan je het volk nog makkelijker belazeren?

Figuren als Wouter Bos, Jan Peter Balkenende en Nout Wellink had men strafrechtelijk moeten vervolgen, zij zijn verantwoordelijk voor onverantwoord handelen, waarmee men banken als ABN Amro en Fortis middels honderden miljarden van (ons) belastinggeld op de been heeft gehouden....... De geholpen banken had men failliet moeten laten gaan! Met een fractie van dat geld had men een staatsbank op kunnen zetten, waarin men de persoonlijke en zakelijke rekeningen (mits ter goeder trouw) van de failliete banken had kunnen stallen...... (dat 'ter goeder trouw': een fiks aantal hele foute figuren, die schatrijk zijn geworden van financiële producten die de bankencrisis veroorzaakten, zijn net als Bos, Balkenende en Wellink, de strafrechtelijke 'dans' ontsprongen......)

Wellink en Bos hadden al ver voor de crisis moeten ingrijpen en niet achteraf komen met lamme excuses als dat men niets meer van de gaande financiële producten begreep, dat onderkennende had men in moeten grijpen, maar heeft dat niet gedaan...... Een grote schande!!

Nee, men laat nu beelden zien waarin de heren vertellen dat ze zelfs op de grond hebben geslapen en een stuk van een tapijt als kussen gebruikten...... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Oh wat zielig, wat 'heeft men zijn best gedaan en onmogelijk lange dagen gemaakt.....' Walgelijk!!

In plaats van te worden geportretteerd als volkomen onbekwaam en zelfs misdadig aan de paal te worden genageld voor hun buiten parlementair opreden, worden o.a. 'de heren' Bos en Balkenende als helden afgeschilderd..........

Nee, politici en (hoge) ambtenaren zijn ook maar mensen, aldus de makers ('journalisten') van de documentaire........ Ja en niet zelden heel foute mensen!!!

Nog een uitsmijter: Bos, Wellink en anderen zouden gezegd hebben dat we de toekomst niet kunnen voorspellen, maar dat er opnieuw zo'n crisis aankomt is wel zeker..... Inderdaad en dat is te danken aan o.a. het wanbeleid dat na het aandienen van de crisis werd gevoerd, juist door figuren als Bos, Balkenende en Wellink is er niet echt ingegrepen en paal en perk gesteld aan fout handelen door banken en andere financiële instellingen..... In de VS worden alweer bundels met slechte leningen verhandeld en reken maar dat ook Nederlandse banken daaraan meedoen, als het niet in de VS is, dan wel in de EU.......

Vergeet niet dat een paar miljoen mensen (alleen al in Nederland) in diepe ellende zijn gestort door deze crisis en door wanbeleid van de overheid op deze crisis, neem: werkloosheid, echtscheidingen, huisuitzettingen, psychische klachten, suïcides en dikke armoede..... Waar de kinderen van de slachtoffers een trauma voor het leven hebben opgelopen (nogmaals: door het totaal falen van de overheid...)....

Onverdraaglijk!!!

Een uur na publicatie de kop veranderd, 'film' verplaatst na: 'De achtste Dag'.

Rusland wil Syrië nieuwe antiraketsysteem leveren tegen aanvallen van derden, de reden voor geheim bezoek van VS commandant aan Israël......

De aanval van de VS, GB en Frankrijk, als reactie op 'een gifgasaanval van het Syrische leger' tegen de stad Douma, blijkt niet alleen totaal illegaal te zijn (en dat weer niet alleen vanwege het feit dat er geen gifgasaanval werd gepleegd op die stad), maar deze actie was ook nog eens totaal contraproductief....

Dat zit zo: Rusland overweegt als reactie op die laatste aanval haar S-300 defensie raketten te leveren aan Syrië.... Deze raketten hebben een groot bereik en kunnen bijvoorbeeld de illegale aanvallen van Israël (intussen meer dan 100 aanvallen en stuk voor stuk oorlogsmisdaden) tegen Syrische doelen worden voorkomen. Deze raketten zouden Israëlische toestellen al in het Libanees luchtruim uit kunnen schakelen...... (ook die laffe manier van aanvallen via het luchtruim van een ander land, is een grove schending van internationaal recht, immers Israël begeeft zich illegaal in Libanees luchtruim, alweer een enorme oorlogsmisdaad van terreurstaat Israël......). 

Ofwel Syrië wordt door deze illegale aanval straks veel beter beschermd tegen dit soort illegale aanvallen, of die nu van van de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël komen, dan wel van terreurentiteiten VS, GB en Frankrijk (of andere NAVO landen). Ik noem die laatste landen, daar deze de aanval openden met kruisraketten, die laag kunnen vliegen om detectie te voorkomen, echter ook met deze verdedigingsraketten kunnen kruisraketten van de VS, GB en Frankrijk (en anderen) uit de lucht worden gehaald, of ter plekke het lanceerplatform (schepen, vliegtuigen, of lanceerplatforms op land) vernietigen dat laatste hoorde ik onlangs op WDR..... Al moet gezegd worden dat ook zonder de nieuwe Russische raketten, het merendeel van de afgeschoten kruisraketten werd vernietigd, voordat het doel werd bereikt!

Het is te hopen dat Rusland deze S-300 raketten levert aan Syrië zodat er een eind kan worden gemaakt aan de westerse en Israëlische terreur in Syrië. Volgens het Russische dagblad Kommersant is de (gratis) levering van het S-300 raketsysteem een feit en worden er al onderdelen afgeleverd in Syrië, iets dat de Syrische regering ontkent, men zou hier nog een besluit over willen nemen. Reuters citeerde Lavrov die stelde dat zowel de Russische als de Syrische autoriteiten nog niet hebben beslist over een definitieve levering van dit defensie systeem.

De corrupte en psychopathische massamoordenaar in de persoon van de Israëlische premier Netanyahu, heeft al aangegeven dat met de levering van het S-300 raketsysteem aan Syrië (alweer) een spreekwoordelijke rode lijn zal worden overschreden en dat Israël daarop actie zal ondernemen.......

Niet vreemd dus dat de commandant van de VS terreurtroepen, in deze van CENTCOM, Joseph Votel terreurstaat Israël in het geheim bezocht, immers dit raketsysteem is ook een gevaar voor het agressieve VS leger in de regio......

Commander of US Troops in Syria Makes “Secret and Unprecedented” Visit to Israel

(ZHE) — Increasingly it appears that the recent US coalition missile strikes on Syria have utterly backfired: instead of weakening Syria or degrading its military capabilities, the attack may have actually served to strengthen Syria’s defenses.

Since the massive strike which involved the US, UK, and France launching over 100 cruise missiles, Russia is rumored to be moving forward on delivery of its advanced S-300 missile defense system, which would be a monumental upgrade allowing Syrian defenses to far surpass current capabilities which utilize the Soviet-made S-125 and S-200 air defense systems.

Crucially, S-300s have a range of up to 150-200 kilometers (or 120 miles), bringing Syrian deterrent reach easily to within Lebanese airspace (as Israel has routinely struck targets inside Syria while firing over “neutral” Lebanese airspace in recent years), and could even extend airspace coverage into Israel itself.

Could this be the reason for some major behind-the-scenes diplomatic scrambling?

On Monday VOA News chief White House correspondent Steve Herman announced that US CENTCOM commander General Joseph Votel is in the midst of “a secret and unprecedented visit to Israel.”

Knowledge of the “secret” visit was based on exclusive footage broadcast by Israel’s Kann News, which first reported, “the commander of the American Central Command arrived for the first time to Israel, and met with senior security officials, including the Chief of Staff.”

No doubt the potential for what weapons experts have commonly described as the “exceptionally advanced” Russian-supplied S-300 in Israel’s backyard is making Tel Aviv and its allies nervous. Israel has repeatedly called delivery of the S-300s a “red line” for which it would act, however, plans for just such a scenario could be hastening.

Early Monday morning Israel’s Channel 10 senior diplomatic correspondent broke the following, subsequently confirmed in the Times of Israel and Reuters:

Russian newspaper Kommersant reports that Russia might deliver S-300 anti aircraft missiles to Syria in the very near future in order to defend Damascus & Strategic Syrian army bases from Israel & U.S. airstrikes.

Kommersant reported Russia will give the S-300 missiles to Syria for free from Russian army supplies as part of its military assistance to Syria. This way the delivery could be done very quickly.

Russian military sources said parts of the S-300 will be delivered soon to Syria via cargo planes or Russian navy ships. Until Syrian officers will be trained to operate the system it will be operated by Russian military experts in coordination with the Syrian army.

According to Kommersant Russia believes that delivering the system will stabilize the situation in Syria and deter Israel and the U.S. from continuing its airstrikes in Syria. Russian sources said that if Israel attacks the missiles the results would be catastrophic.

Though still being hotly debated and contested among analysts, Syria’s over 30-year old current deterrent system appears to have performed well, likely stunning the West and neighboring Israel (which itself played a part in the coalition attack) as it reportedly shot down 71 of the 103 cruise missiles, according to official Russian and Syrian government sources. 

As we previously described, Pentagon officials have vehemently denied that their “nice and new and smart” cruise missiles were actually shot down, and Russia now further claims to be in possession of at least two non-detonated coalition missiles. Most Western media reports continue to assert that Syrian missile defense failed to shoot down a single inbound missile. Notably, the Pentagon has been careful in all statements to say Russia’s S-300 system (currently present aboard Russian battleships in the Mediterranean) did not engage.

However, there are other possibilities that the coalition’s missiles simply failed in reaching their targets in some instances without intercept by Syrian defenses, or even that advanced Russian air defense Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) may have been in play.

But one doesn’t need to take the Russian Defense Ministry’s word for it. It is entirely possible and even likely that Russian intercept claims are inflated, yet that there were a number of intercepts that night was also reported by several important outside sources, including by Syrian pro-rebel media, foremost being the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which has for years been a chief go-to source for all mainstream reporting on Syria (though ironically when SOHR contradicts the mainstream media, such as in this case, its numbers are ignored).

SOHR reported, based on “several intersected sources” on the ground, that “the number of missiles that were downed exceeded 65.” That anti-Assad/anti-Russia pro-rebel SOHR is saying this is hugely significant, and is consistent with Russia’s claim.

But all of this will perhaps quickly become a moot point if Russia does indeed deliver the S-300 system to Syria after warning immediately on the heels of the US-led strike, that there would be consequences.

On the very morning after the US strike took place, Russia’s first deputy chief of staff, Sergei Rudskoi, said Russia would “reconsider” whether to supply the air defenses to Assad – an issue previously thought dead as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had reportedly successfully lobbied President Putin against the possibility in 2013.

Netanyahu was quoted at the time as saying of the S-300 system, “We’ll destroy your missiles if you deliver them to Assad” – a warning which has recently been repeated in the form of an Israeli “red line”. However, Russian military sources have this week been quoted in the Times of Israel as saying: if Israel tried to destroy the anti-aircraft batteries—as analysts have indicated Israel likely would—it would be “catastrophic for all sides.”

But on Monday, Reuters reported that no decision had been made on S-300 delivery to Syria, citing Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said, “We’ll have to wait to see what specific decisions the Russian leadership and representatives of Syria will take.” Lavrov added, “There is probably no secret about this and it can all be announced (if a decision is taken).”

However, given Israel’s past history of “strike first” in Syria and negotiate later, we could witness missiles flying before any official announcement takes place.
