Trump heeft alweer wetgeving ter bescherming van het milieu uitgekleed, tijd voor een boycot van fossiele brandstoffen geleverd door VS bedrijven

Tijdens de laatste maanden heeft Trump oliemaatschappijen en andere bedrijven die het milieu ernstig vervuilen al toestemming gegeven zich niet langer aan milieuregels te houden, dit vanwege de Coronacrisis.....

Het Care2 team heeft een petitie 'gelanceerd', waarmee de Trump administratie wordt gevraagd om NEPA (de National Environmental Protection Act), te herstellen zodat de burgers en het milieu worden beschermd tegen zware milieuvervuiling.

Uiteraard kunnen wij de petitie niet tekenen, echter wij kunnen wel van Den Haag en Brussel eisen dat er niet langer fossiele brandstoffen van VS bedrijven worden afgenomen, immers vooral deze oliemaatschappijen zouden zelf ook hun verantwoordelijkheid moeten nemen en hebben rekening te houden met de mens en ons aller thuis, de aarde..... Kunnen we meteen eisen dat steenkool niet langer wordt geïmporteerd uit Australië en de VS, die steenkool op de wereldmarkt dumpen tegen afbraakprijzen, de reden waarom Balkenende 4 (CDA en PvdA ) het besluit namen 4 nieuwe kolencentrales toe te staan en waarom Rutte 2 en 3 miljarden hebben gestoken in het opkopen van bossen in de VS en Scandinavië, om deze als 'biomassa' te verbranden in deze centrales, terwijl houtverbranding nog een fractie slechter is dan steenkoolverbranding.... (en dan durven de reguliere media hier Rutte 3 het groenste kabinet ooit te noemen, een staaltje smerige 'greenwashing' waar je stijl van achterover slaat......)

Tijd voor een EU petitie!!

In de tekst van de Care2 petitie valt o.a. te lezen dat deze nodig is om het klimaatkantelpunt te voorkomen, echter er zijn al wetenschappers die stellen dat we dit kantelpunt al zijn gepasseerd en gezien de snelle klimaatopwarming aan de polen, hebben deze wetenschappers het gelijk aan hun kant. Dit wil niet zeggen dat we niets moeten doen, we moeten juist alles op alles stellen om de klimaatverandering nog enigszins af te remmen, dat kan miljoenen mensen het leven sparen en kan gebieden sparen voor bewoning!!

Over onbewoonbare gebieden en steden gesproken: afgelopen week in Bagdad temperaturen tot boven de 50 graden Celsius, ofwel zonder airco is deze stad eigenlijk niet langer bewoonbaar, waar de huidige bewoners door de schuld van het westen nog maar een paar uur per dag de beschikking hebben over elektriciteit, waardoor ook de airco amper verlichting kan brengen....... (dit nog naast het feit dat het enorme gebruik van airco's de klimaatverandering verder aanjaagt......)

Mocht je familie, vrienden of kennissen hebben in de VS, speel hen dan de petitie door en vraag hen te tekenen.

Trump just wrecked another environmental provision 

Trump just gutted one of the most important environmental protection and anti-climate change laws to pad the pockets of fossil fuel execs

Since 1970, the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) has protected people and the planet by making sure construction companies can't just willy-nilly build factories, pipeliness, major roadways, or drilling sites near where people live. Naturally, that infuriated Donald Trump. So he took a massive wrecking ball to the law. Under his new, stripped-down version, corporations will no longer need to consider a project's contribution to climate change. And people who live near proposed sites will have virtually zero chance for input.

 

This is an egregious attempt to take away the rights of the people and expand the already massive power and wealth of the fossil fuel and construction industries, and at a particularly horrible time. Climate change is already a global emergency, with scientists agreeing that if we have not taken enough steps by 2030 to curb the climb of the world's temperatures, we will be past the point of no return. NEPA was already insufficient for the task at hand, and now we don't even have its meager protections. Sign the petition and demand that the Trump Administration restore NEPA to the way it was meant to be, before it's too late for the planet and our people!

Trump past milieuwetgeving zo aan dat de grote vervuilers meer vrij spel krijgen dan eerder voor mogelijk gehouden

De wereld vergaapte zich de laatste maanden aan de poging tot impeachment van Trump, die van meet af aan tot mislukken gedoemd was, daar de Republikeinen in de senaat al lang hadden aangegeven hier niet in mee te zullen gaan (wat niet wil zeggen dat Trump geen een ernstige misdaad heeft begaan door de president van Oekraïne zo onder druk te zetten*).   

Intussen is de Trump administratie bezig geweest met het uitkleden van milieuwetgeving, zoals de National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), waarmee plannenmakers, aannemers en anderen werden gedwongen te konderzoeken wat de gevolgen zijn voor het milieu bij de aanleg/bouw van wegen, gebouwen pijpleidingen, fabrieken enz. Bij schade voor het milieu moest men dan maatregelen nemen om deze te verminderen, dan wel maatregelen nemen tot het compenseren van de milieuschade.....

Het Care2 Team is een petitie gestart om Trump en zijn boevenbende te dwingen om de bestaande regel en wetgeving te handhaven. Moet je nagaan: deze wetten en regels in de VS zijn nu al, dus zonder verder ingrijpen van de Trump administratie, waardeloos...... Zo mogen oliemaatschappijen in de VS het zwaar vervuilde water dat overblijft na fracken, althans het zwaar vervuilde water wat men weer kan oppompen, te lozen in rivieren of in zee........ In feite is dit een verkapte vorm van subsidie, immers in een normale democratie zou fracken van schalie-olie en -gas worden verboden, dan wel zou men dit afvalwater moeten zuiveren of vernietigen, een uiterst kostbare zaak, terwijl lozen zoals in de VS al helemaal een doodzonde zou zijn...... Voorts laat fracken een maanlandschap achter met verontreinigde grond, een landschap dat men niet hoeft te herstellen en te zuiveren van gifstoffen..... Kortom: zonder (ook andere) subsidies zou schalie-olie en -gas veel te duur zijn......

Nu wil de Trump administratie dat de EU dit ook op andere manieren gesubsidieerde schaliegas in de vorm van LNG importeert uit de VS en de contracten met Rusland verscheurt (klik op het label NS2**, direct onder dit bericht), terwijl dat Russische gas vergeleken met het schaliegas uit de VS zo'n 100 keer 'schoner' is (qua winning en transport) en daardoor veel minder belastend is voor het milieu.... De Trump administratie heeft zelfs bedrijven bedreigd met sancties als zij blijven meewerken bij de aanleg van NS2 (Nord Stream 2)........

In de petitietekst haalt Care 2 het voorbeeld aan van de Keystone 1 pijpleiding, die over/door o.a. heilige gronden en wateren loopt van de oorspronkelijke bevolking van de VS ('indianen'), deze pijpleiding heeft intussen al gezorgd voor het weglekken van 400.000 gallon olie, dat is meer dan 1,5 miljoen liter olie (!!!)........ 

De Trump administratie heeft de stappen voor het aanleggen van dit soort pijpleidingen overigens al sterk vereenvoudigd en enkele staten in de VS hebben gesteld dat actievoerders die zich verzetten tegen de aanleg van pijpleidingen en die zich op de grote weg bevinden voor acties, ongestraft mogen worden doodgereden......... (echt 'een leuk vakantieland', de VS......)

We leven met z'n allen op een kleine planeet en wat in de VS gebeurt heeft z'n weerslag op de de rest van de wereld, zoals ook de gevolgen van de klimaatverandering laten zien. Juist daarom is het belangrijk dat ook Nederlanders en andere wereldburgers de petitie van Care2 steunen. Lees en teken de petitie ajb en zegt het voort!

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is perhaps the most important environmental law we have. Most importantly, it requires them to make up for some of the damage. NEPA is not the sexiest piece of legislation out there, and Trump shredding it doesn't look as shocking now like some of the other egregious things he's done, like detaining children in cages at the border. But make no mistake: what he's doing will have equally far-reaching impacts. Trump is rewriting how NEPA is applied by removing the requirement that people take climate change into account when doing environmental assessments and exempt some projects from conducting one at all. There are clear winners here: polluters who are more concerned with making a buck today than ensuring the planet is habitable tomorrow. A notorious enemy of environmental protection measures, the president is using the thin-as-ice argument of protecting jobs in the construction industry in order to further devastate our planet. The administration is moving to add revisions to NEPA that would remove the requirement to consider climate change when assessing the environmental impact of pipelines, highways, and other large federal structural projects. Recently, the Keystone 1 Pipeline spilled almost 400,000 gallons of oil in North Dakota. If these revisions are permitted, we can expect far worse. Some of the new rules would limit the number of projects that require an environmental review at all - deforestation, waste dumping, and increased emissions would run rampant. More horrifying still is the fact that the revisions would allow projects to ignore the impact of climate change on their future. For example, if a rise in sea level could potentially submerge a proposed highway, that will not be taken into consideration in its construction. Ignoring this reality will yield wasted work that has to be redone in several years time, ultimately squandering time and money. The "burdensome regulations" that President Trump complains of are the same regulations that keep us safe and our planet from warming any faster than it already is. While Australia's bushfires devastate the continent, now is not the time to pull back on the laws protecting our environment. *  Daarmee hebben de Republikeinen aangegeven dat de president onder en boven de wet staat, immers Trump en z'n misdaadbende in de senaat doen net of hij onschuldig is daar zijn partijgenoten hem niet willen vervolgen...... Echter dat Trump een ernstige misdaad beging, die in elke reguliere democratie tot afzetting zou hebben geleid, is zeker.... De VS is dan ook al lang geen rechtsstaat meer, daarnaast voldoet het verkiezingssysteem in de VS al helemaal niet aan de voorwaarden voor een fatsoenlijke democratie.......

** NS2 staat voor Nord Stream 2, de gaspijpleiding die van Rusland naar Duitsland wordt aangelegd en dat voor een groot deel door de Oostzee. Heb verder ook het label DAPL toegevoegd, dit staat voor een andere grote pijpleiding in de VS: de Dakota Access Pipeline.

VS laat genetisch gemanipuleerde koolmotten vrij in de bestrijding van deze motten..........

New York (staat) wil genetische gemanipuleerde motten vrijlaten i.h.k.v. roofdier bestrijding op koolsoorten............ Dit zonder een diepgaand onderzoek naar de gevolgen die deze genetisch gemanipuleerde motten hebben in het milieu, zoals op andere dieren die deze motten eten........ 

Bovendien zullen veel boeren die ecologische gewassen telen, hun certificaat verliezen, doordat het gif waarmee deze manlijke motten, de vrouwelijke motten bij de voortplanting vergiftigen, in het milieu en op plantmateriaal terecht zal komen...... 

 

Een  diamondback moth of koolmot, zoals wij deze noemen.

Lees het hieronder staande onthutsende bericht, dat ik afgelopen maandag van Beyond Pesticides ontving. Helaas kunnen wij als niet VS burgers (dat zijn we eigenlijk wel, gezien het beleid van onze opvolgende regeringen, maar dan derderangs burgers) de petitie tegen deze Frankenstein motten niet tekenen. Heb toch de links laten staan voor VS burgers hier of voor het geval u familie, vrienden of bekenden hebt, die wel het VS staatsburgerschap bezitten (wijs hen er a.u.b. op). We zouden wel moeten kunnen tekenen, daar onze aarde maar klein is en we als mensheid met z'n allen verantwoordelijk zijn voor wat er ook op dit soort gebieden gebeurt, zelfs als dit aan de andere kant van de aarde is!

Oppose Release of Genetically Engineered Moth in NY

Help stop a dangerous plan hatched in New York to control a caterpillar in cabbage. Under the plan, up to 10,000 genetically engineered (GE) male diamondback moths (DBMs) will be released each week during the cabbage planting cycle (which runs about three to four months). According to USDA, “The males are genetically engineered with a lethal gene that they pass on to females when they mate.”

Because of the widespread release, this plan –a first of its kind in food crops– will contaminate organic farms with genetically engineered material. And, this is all being done based on a cursory environmental assessment, without an in-depth environmental impact assessment.

This is an issue that affects all of us –not just New Yorkers–because the moths do not respect state boundaries, and this action would set a precedent for other states.

Following a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) on Cornell University’s proposed release, there is an urgent need to ensure that the state of New York addresses contamination issues that APHIS failed to consider. At the top of the list is possible contamination of organic crops, which could threaten the standing of organic products with consumers and holds the threat of decertification. Other  contamination concerns are raised by scientists at the Center for Food Safety, Food and Water Watch, and GeneWatch UK.

The FONSI absolves APHIS from the duty to perform an in-depth environmental impact statement (EIS) under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) points out that this is the first food use of this particular kind of GE technology –using a genetically engineered male to produce inviable female offspring— and, as such, deserves the full investigation of an EIS, rather than the more cursory evaluation of the environmental assessment that led to the FONSI.

In addition to NEPA, New York state law requires a state agency to conduct a review under the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) when it uses its "discretionary" authority to approve, fund, or directly undertake an action that may affect the environment. In order to release the insects, Cornell must receive a permit under New York Environmental Conservation Law §11-0507 from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), as it did for the release of caged insects in the past. 

However, DEC has denied responsibility for permitting the action. As a university with a state extension service, Cornell is subject to SEQR. If Cornell or DEC does not perform the required EIS, enforcement is up to citizens. According to the DEC website, “[C]itizens or groups who can demonstrate that they may be harmed by this failure may take legal action. . . . Project approvals may be rescinded by a court and a new review required under SEQR. New York State's court system has consistently ruled in favor of strong compliance with the provisions of SEQR.” NOFA-NY has made a strong showing that organic growers may be harmed by this release.

Organic growers may be harmed if the moths escape from the research plots. The engineered trait is designed to leave behind dead moth larvae and pupae resulting from the mating of the engineered males with wild females. These residues, if left on organic crops (cabbage, broccoli, and other brassica plants), could threaten the standing of organic products with consumers and threaten decertification. In addition, there are plausible scenarios that would result in release of viable DBMs, which could increase damage to crops.

In general, the environmental assessment performed by APHIS ignored a number of important issues, including: contamination of crops with GE dead insects; the impacts on the ecological balance of native brassicas; the lack of research on the migration of DBMs from site to site; impacts in the future if engineered DBMs are released in commercial agriculture; other alternatives besides “no action,” such as the systems approach used by organic growers; the lack of adequate monitoring and buffer zones; food safety; impacts on predators; antibiotic resistance as a result from the use of tetracycline in breeding the moths; other ecological effects; and movement of the DBM across international borders.

Voice your opposition to the release of genetically engineered DBMs to Cornell University (which proposes to release the moths), DEC (which is responsible for state permits of releases of wild animals), and Governor Cuomo (who is responsible for ensuring that state agencies meet their responsibilities.)
