VS staatscensuur op Facebook (ook in de EU)

Facebook maakte onlangs bekend dat het de strijd verder aangaat met 'fake news' ('nepnieuws') door samen te werken met 2 propaganda organen van de overheid, het National Democratic Institute (NDI) en het International Republican Institute (IRI). Eerder werd al bekendgemaakt dat Facebook samenwerkt met de rechtse, door de NAVO gesteunde Atlantic Council (dat lobbyt voor de buitenlandse terreur van de VS en haar oorlogshond de NAVO, plus uiteraard het militair-industrieel complex)......

Met name 'linkse' alternatieve mediaorganen die op internet werkzaam zijn zoals Common Dreams, worden al aangepakt door Facebook, waardoor de zichtbaarheid van deze sites op het platform zwaar is teruggebracht........

Het is dan ook meer dan duidelijk dat de VS steeds verder verandert in een politiestaat, inclusief de daarbij horende censuur......

Bovendien is Facebook met deze samenwerking verworden tot het zoveelste propaganda orgaan van de VS, de grootste terreurentiteit op onze kleine aarde........ Ofwel het sociale netwerk wordt opgescheept met censuur en dat voor het zogenaamd brengen van 'fake news' (nepnieuws) en propaganda, terwijl de 'normale' reguliere (massa-) media voortdurend fake news en propaganda brengen (en zichzelf daarbij censureren, althans als het gaat om artikelen van de journalisten die werken voor die media, maar die hun werk nog wel serieus nemen.....)

De meeste nieuws en actualiteiten sites en blogs op het internet danken hun ontstaan juist aan de smerige berichtgeving in/op de reguliere (massa-) media, berichtgeving die zoals gezegd bol staat van nepnieuws en propaganda voor de huidige inhumane neoliberale maatschappij en waar de illegale oorlogen van de VS op basis van doorzichtige leugens worden voorgesteld als absoluut noodzakelijk, zelfs als dat meer dan 1,5 miljoen doden kost, zoals in het geval van de illegale oorlog die de VS en NAVO partners in 2003 tegen Irak begonnen....... 

Facebook heeft in samenspraak met de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël, besloten een groot aantal accounts van Palestijnen te verwijderen van haar platform........ Alsof de Palestijnen zionisten onderdrukken.......

Meet Facebook’s New Propaganda Partners

(FAIR) — Media giant Facebook recently announced (Reuters, 9/19/18) it would combat “fake news” by partnering with two propaganda organizations founded and funded by the US government: the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI). The social media platform was already working closely with the NATO-sponsored Atlantic Council think tank (FAIR.org, 5/21/18).

                    

Reuters (9/19/18) described two branches of the National Endowment for Democracy, set up by the Reagan administration during the Cold War to promote US foreign policy objectives, as “two US nonprofits.”

In a previous FAIR article (8/22/18), I noted that the “fake news” issue was being used as a pretext to attack the left and progressive news sites. Changes to Facebook’s algorithm have reduced traffic significantly for progressive outlets like Common Dreams (5/3/18), while the pages of Venezuelan government–backed TeleSur English and the independent Venezuelanalysis were shut down without warning, and only reinstated after a public outcry.

The Washington, DC–based NDI and IRI are staffed with senior Democratic and Republican politicians; the NDI is chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, while the late Sen. John McCain was the longtime IRI chair. Both groups were created in 1983 as arms of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a Cold War enterprise backed by then–CIA director William Casey (Jacobin, 3/7/18). That these two US government creations, along with a NATO offshoot like the Atlantic Council, are used by Facebook to distinguish real from fake news is effectively state censorship.

Facebook’s collaboration with the NED organizations is particularly troubling, as both have aggressively pursued regime change against leftist governments overseas. The NDI undermined the Sandinista government of Nicaragua in the 1980s, and continues to do so to this day, while the IRI claimed a key role in the 2002 coup against leftist President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, announcing that it had

“served as a bridge between the nation’s political parties and all civil society groups to help Venezuelans forge a new democratic future…. We stand ready to continue our partnership with the courageous Venezuelan people.”

The Reuters report (9/19/18) mentioned that Facebook was anxious to better curate what Brazilians saw on their feeds in the run-up to their presidential elections, which pits far-right Jair Bolsonaro against leftist Fernando Haddad. The US government has a long history of undermining democracy in Brazil, from supporting a coup in 1964 against the progressive Goulart administration to continually spying on leftist President Dilma Rousseff (BBC, 7/4/15) in the run-up to the parliamentary coup against her in 2016 (CounterSpin, 6/2/17).

           

Glenn Greenwald (Intercept, 12/30/17) reported that “Facebook has been on a censorship rampage against Palestinian activists who protest the decades-long, illegal Israeli occupation, all directed and determined by Israeli officials.”

Soon after it partnered with the Atlantic Council, Facebook moved to delete accounts and pages connected with Iranian broadcasting channels (CNBC, 8/23/18), while The Intercept (12/30/17) reported that in 2017 the social media platform met with Israeli government officials to discuss which Palestinian voices it should censor. Ninety-five percent of Israeli government requests for deletion were granted. Thus the US government and its allies are effectively using the platform to silence dissenting opinion, both at home and on the world stage, controlling what Facebook‘s 2 billion users see and do not see.

Progressives should be deeply skeptical that these moves have anything to do with their stated objective of promoting democracy. Bloomberg Businessweek (9/29/17) reported that the far-right Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) party went to Facebook headquarters for discussions with US companies about how it could use the platform for recruitment and micro-targeting in the 2017 elections. AfD tripled its previous vote share, becoming the third-largest party in Germany, the far right’s best showing since World War II.

Public trust in government is at 18 percent—an all-time low (Pew, 12/14/17). There is similar mistrust of Facebook, with only 20 percent of Americans agreeing social media sites do a good job separating fact from fiction. And yet, worldwide, Facebook is a crucial news source. Fifty-two percent of Brazilians, 61 percent of Mexicans, and 51 percent of Italians and Turks use the platform for news; 39 percent of the US gets their news from the site.

This means that, despite the fact that even its own public mistrusts it, the US government has effectively become the arbiter of what the world sees and hears, with the ability to marginalize or simply delete news from organizations or countries that do not share its opinions. This power could be used at sensitive times, like elections. This is not an idle threat. The US created an entire fake social network for Cubans that aimed to stir unrest and overthrow the Cuban government, according to the Guardian (4/3/14).

That a single corporation has such a monopoly over the flow of worldwide news is already problematic, but the increasing meshing of corporate and US government control over the means of communication is particularly worrying. All those who believe in free and open exchange of information should oppose Facebook becoming a tool of US foreign policy.

Waarom Bolton het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) in de wieg wil smoren

Jonh Bolton, een psychopathische massamoordenaar en grootlobbyist van het militair-industrieel complex, die sinds april dit jaar nationaal veiligheidsadviseur is van Trump, heeft afgelopen tijd fiks afgegeven op het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) in Den Haag, daar het ICC aangaf VS oorlogsmisdaden begaan in Afghanistan, te zullen onderzoeken.......

Brett Wilkins, de schrijver van het hieronder opgenomen artikel (gisteren gepubliceerd op Common Dreams, door mij overgenomen van Anti-Media) stelde op het verlangen van Bolton, het ICC in haar wieg te wurgen, dat hij eigenlijk bedoelt dat VS militairen baby's in hun wieg moeten kunnen vermoorden zonder daar voor te worden vervolgd........

Wilkins geeft een paar voorbeelden van vreselijke VS terreur en wijst naar de regering van George W. Bush en de verklaring van deze president over het niet willen deelnemen aan het ICC, waar deze met een lam excuus kwam van niet serieus te nemen onderzoeken, terwijl de werkelijke angst van Bush, zijn psychopathische staf, zijn regering en het Pentagon, was dat zijzelf vervolgd zouden worden, ofwel dat het ICC haar taak juist te serieus zou nemen.

Het voorgaande geldt trouwens ook voor de Obama en Trump administratie, ook zij waren/zijn bang om zelf aangeklaagd te worden voor de enorme oorlogsmisdaden die de VS jaar in jaar uit begaat en dat in feite al meer dan dik 100 jaar.......

Het meest schunnige van al (althans voor mij) is wel dat de westerse regeringen nooit de VS verantwoordelijk houden voor haar oorlogsmisdaden en andere misdaden tegen bijvoorbeeld democratieën.... Als Rusland wordt verdacht van oorlogsmisdaden schreeuwt men bij wijze van spreken de volgende dag al moord en brand in de Kamer en eist sancties, terwijl de VS zelfs op basis van feiten nog niet wordt veroordeeld en er al helemaal geen sancties worden geëist....

Why John Bolton Really Hates the International Criminal Court

When Bolton expresses his desire to “strangle the ICC in its cradle,” what he really means is he wants US troops to be able to murder babies in their cradles with impunity.

(CD Op-ed) — On February 12, 2010, US Army Rangers conducted a nighttime raid on a home in the village of Khataba, outside Gardez, Afghanistan. Dozens of men, women and children, including the district prosecutor and local police chief, had gathered at the house to celebrate the naming of a newborn baby just before the raid occurred. The Rangers stormed the home with guns blazing, killing the prosecutor, police chief, two pregnant women and a teenage girl.

The US military lied about the Khataba raid, initially making the outrageous claim that the women and girl had been killed by their relatives before the assault. But Afghan investigators soon discovered that not only had the American troops killed the civilians, they also dug the bullets out of their riddled bodies and washed the wounds with alcohol in a failed attempt to conceal their crime. When confronted with the evidence, the US-led coalition admitted its forces had indeed killed the women. Despite the US admission, none of the Rangers involved in the atrocity were ever disciplined.

The Khataba raid is but one of many US war crimes and atrocities in Afghanistan. Other notable events include the 2010 serial murder of unarmed Afghan civilians in Kandahar province by members of a self-described Army “Kill Team,” which collected victims’ body parts as grisly souvenirs of their crimes, the torture and murder of detainees at secret prisons including the notorious “Salt Pit” near Kabul and air strikes like the intentional bombing of an international charity hospital in Kunduz that killed 42 patients and staff in October 2015.

To date, no senior US government, military or intelligence officials have been held accountable for these and other incidents that, if committed by America’s enemies, would inarguably be considered — and prosecuted as — war crimes. The International Criminal Court (ICC) was created two decades ago to address the general impunity enjoyed by many war criminals. And while the court, which has almost exclusively prosecuted Africans, has been widely criticized as the “Infamous Caucasian Court” and an instrument of Western neocolonialism, it has in recent years announced that it would begin investigating US war crimes in Afghanistan, as well as Israeli crimes against Palestine, which became the 123rd ICC member nation in 2015.

Countries with nothing to fear do not fear the ICC. The United States and Israel are very afraid of the ICC. The murder of unarmed civilians is a war crime. So is torture. Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of densely-populated civilian areas, its half-century occupation of Palestinian territory and its construction and expansion of Jews-only settler colonies on Palestinian land are all also illegal under international law. Neither Israel nor the United States has joined the ICC. Other leading human rights violators, including North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar and Ethiopia, have either never joined or have withdrawn from the court.

The United States, which was instrumental in forging the post-World War II human rights framework embodied by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and admirably demonstrated at the Nuremberg trials, has sadly abrogated its role and responsibility to promote and uphold human rights in recent decades. After Nicaragua successfully sued the United States in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for waging a war of terror against it while supporting the horrifically brutal Contra rebellion, President Ronald Reagan ignored the ruling and angrily withdrew the US from the court. Later, the George W. Bush administration refused to join the nascent ICC on the dubious grounds that the court might be used to “frivolously” charge US troops with war crimes in “politically-motivated” trials.

However, the Bush administration’s concern wasn’t really that the ICC would be used frivolously, but that it would be used seriously, and not to prosecute low-ranking troops but rather officials in Washington, DC, quite a few of whom would surely qualify for prosecution. This was, after all, an administration that went to great lengths to “legalize” torture, and which argued that the president had unlimited wartime powers to, among other crimes, order the massacre of an entire village of civilians.

John Bolton, currently President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, was a key proponent of torture and illegal invasion and occupation when he served in the Bush administration. Bolton has consistently criticized the ICC as a threat to “US sovereignty.” What he really means is that it is a threat to US impunity. When Bolton expresses his desire to “strangle the ICC in its cradle,” what he really means is he wants US troops to be able to murder babies in their cradles with impunity.

That’s what happened on March 11, 2012 when US Army Sgt. Robert Bales raged from house to house in three villages in Panjwai district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan and methodically executed 16 civilians, nine of them children, before setting many of his victims’ bodies on fire.

Bales was sentenced to life imprisonment, but such accountability is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to US war crimes and atrocities. And that’s exactly the way that Bolton and the other US officials who fear the ICC want things to remain.

There is much hand-wringing by those who fear President Trump fancies himself above the law. But for too much of its existence and in too many of its affairs, the United States has acted as if the law only applies to itself when it stands to achieve a favorable outcome.

Hare giftige kwaadaardigheid, VS ambassadeur bij de Verenigde Naties, Nikki 'bloody' Haley heeft afgelopen woensdag de VN Veiligheidsraad voorgehouden dat Nicaragua hetzelfde pad volgt als dat tot de oorlog in Syrië leidde en de economische ineenstorting veroorzaakte in Venezuela...... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! De oorlog in Syrië is tot in de puntjes voorbereid in Washington..... Al in 2006 werden de eerste plannen gemaakt die tot deze oorlog hebben geleid.....

Het VS scenario was in deze het organiseren van een opstand, waar dit land samen met Saoedi-Arabië  buitenlandse (extreme) jihadisten aanvoerden (o.a. vanuit Libië, dat toen al volledig was vernietigd door de VS en de NAVO), jihadisten die tijdens de demonstraties op het volk schoten, waarvoor de schuld bij het regime Assad werd gelegd. Tot op bepaalde hoogte lukte die door de VS georganiseerde 'opstand.....' 

Jammer voor de VS, maar 'de opstand' leidde niet tot een staatsgreep in Syrië, daar het overgrote deel van het Syrische volk achter de regering Assad bleef staan, e.e.a bleek nog eens tijdens de verkiezingen in 2014, waar het overgrote deel van het volk dat kon stemmen. Van de 15 miljoen stemgerechtigden brachten 11 miljoen Syriërs een stem uit (kom daar maar 's voor in Nederland...), en daaruit bleek dat meer dan 80% achter Assad stond.....* Wel is er sindsdien sprake van oorlog in dat land, een zoveelste illegale oorlog van de VS tegen een haar onwelgevallig regime, dat van Assad.....

Wat betreft de economische 'ineenstorting' van Venezuela, ook dat is een product van grootschalige VS terreur, door de grote winkelketens in het land (in handen van VS ondernemers) niet meer te bevoorraden, na sterke druk vanuit Washington, ontstonden er grote tekorten aan voedsel in het land...... De medicijnen die in Latijns Amerika worden gebruikt, komen voor een groot deel uit de VS, na enige druk vanuit Washington, zijn er bijna geen medicijnen meer te krijgen in Venezuela....... De VS overheid en oorlogshoer Haley hebben hier een grote bek over, terwijl ze het gvd zelf hebben gefikst!!

Haley liet in de VN weten dat de VS wat betreft Nicaragua niet lijdzaam zal toezien..... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Alsof de VS dat nu wel doet, ook in Nicaragua is de VS bezig met de demonstraties om te zetten in een opstand, die moet uitmonden in een staatsgreep..... Het welbekende recept.....

De VN zou eindelijk in moeten grijpen en de VS tot terreurstaat verklaren, het aantal moorden dat in naam van dit land en door dit land worden gepleegd is na WOII tot nu gestegen tot ver boven de 22 miljoen, de hoogste tijd dat de wereld de VS gaat boycotten en de top van dit land tot ongewenste vreemdelingen verklaart! De VS is door het Internationaal Gerechtshof (VN) overigens al eens veroordeeld wegens terrorisme, dit tegen het land... Nicaragua!!! De VN verordende op deze uitspraak dat de VS schadevergoedingen diende te betalen, dat heeft de VS tot op de dag van vandaag niet gedaan....... De VS was indertijd verantwoordelijk voor het aanvallen van olie-installaties en havens, plus het leggen van mijnen voor die havens....... Dus ook toen keek de VS niet lijdzaam toe.......

“With each passing day, Nicaragua travels further down a familiar path,” Haley told a meeting of the UN Security Council on the deteriorating environment in the Central American country. “It is a path that Syria has taken. It is a path that Venezuela has taken.”

The warning took place during the first Security Council meeting called by Ambassador Haley, the current council president, to address what the UN says Nicaragua’s government has participated in violent acts of repression toward students and opposition groups that have led to over 300 deaths since mid-April.

Haley said the Security Council could not remain a “passive observer” as Nicaragua descended into chaos “because we know where this path leads.”

She said Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega and Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro “are cut from the same corrupt cloth … And they are both dictators who live in fear of their own people.”

“The Syrian exodus has produced millions of refugees, sowing instability throughout the Middle East and Europe,” Haley said. “The Venezuelan exodus has become the largest displacement of people in the history of Latin America. A Nicaraguan exodus would overwhelm its neighbors and create a surge of migrants and asylum-seekers in Central America.”

Costa Rican Ambassador Rodrigo Carazo told the council that his government received 400 asylum applications from Nicaraguan citizens in the first quarter, that was before the crisis started. Last month, Ambassador Carazo said that number inflated to over 4,000. Year to date, the Costa Rican government has received nearly 13,000 asylum applications from Nicaraguans, he added.

“The deepening of the political, social and economic crisis, the repression, and the failure to respect fundamental freedoms and human rights shown by the authorities has the potential of an unbridled worsening of the crisis,” Carazo warned. “And this can have a direct impact on the stability and the future of development in Central America.”

According to Voice of America (VOA), human rights groups have reported abuses by law enforcement and military groups, including temporary detentions, torture, sexual violence, harassment, and intimidation. Nicaraguan civil society leader Felix Maradiaga told council members, “Nicaragua has become a huge prison which seems to be without any controls…every day, we see a climate of terror and indiscriminate persecution.”

Maradiaga warned the political crisis was at risk of developing into a collapse. "Today, there is a time bomb in Nicaragua," he said. “Crimes against humanity are creating an atmosphere conducive to internal conflict that can only grow in size.”

A special report published last week by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) documented the four months of social unrest in the country.

The human rights office called on the government to stop the arrest of protesters and disarm the masked groups that have been responsible for many killings. Then, late last week, the government expelled the human rights group from the country.

The Organization of American States (OAS) has also condemned the violence and urged protestors and government to particpate in a peaceful dialogue. The OAS has called for 2021 elections to be brought foward as soon as possible to usher in a new government.

“When tensions like this are so high, and violence takes place in such a way in a society that leaves more than 300 people dead, you need to give the power back to the people to decide,” OAS Chief of Staff Gonzalo Koncke told reporters.

Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada spoke at the Security Council Wednesday, explaining to officials his country is “a model” in the fight against terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking in the region, and has a booming economy.

Moncada criticized the US for its past interventions in Nicaragua in the 1980s and urged Washington to “cease any type of aggression or intervention,” which leaves us with thought that the Trump administration could soon be nation-building in Central America.

Meanwhile, the official Twitter feed of the Russian Mission to the UN “urges Washington to abandon the colonial-style attempts to influence the situation in Nicaragua such as the NICAAct, visa and other restrictions against Nicaraguan officials, and the abolition of the “temporary protection status” for migrants from this country.”

It seems that Central America is about to become a hot... again.
