The algorithm learns your political biases and feeds you self-validating social media posts to assist you in confirming them.
The algorithm listens to your conversations and presents you with helpful advertising to assist you in achieving your maximum consumer potential.
Don’t cover your laptop camera like some weird conspiracy theorist, the algorithm is trying to watch you masturbate.

The algorithm is always a step ahead of you.
You have never once fooled the algorithm.
The algorithm knows you act confident but secretly you fear you’re inadequate and everyone hates you.
The algorithm knows that those times you quickly pause and screw your eyes shut are because you remembered something embarrassing that you did in the past.

Kwam op 31 aug jl. een Avaaz Twitterbericht tegen waarin de schrijver pleit voor censuur..... Eerder die dag zag ik al een Twitterbericht van Avaaz waarin men stelde achter oorlogsmisdadiger Joe Biden te staan, echter toen ik dat bericht even later wilde overnemen was het verdwenen van Twitter. Uit het volgende door Avaaz geplaatste Twitterbericht kan je overigens hetzelfde destilleren (let op wat een 'geweldig succes' dit Twitterbericht was, te zien onder de laatste foto!!):

In Jemen wordt een genocide uitgevoerd op de sjiitische bevolking door de Saoedische terreurcoalitie, gesteund door de VS, Groot-Brittannië en Frankrijk..... De Houthi rebellen bevechten deze moorddadige coalitie, terwijl de 'regering van Jemen' een door de VS en Saoedi-Arabië geparachuteerde junta is die geen legitimatie heeft..... Iran zou volgens de Saoedische terreurcoalitie, de VS en zo ongeveer de rest van het westen de Houthi's bevoorraden met wapens, maar nooit is daar ook maar een flinter aan bewijs voor geleverd!!! Kortom Avaaz steunt de genocide in Jemen die intussen aan ruim meer dan 500.000 mensen het leven heeft gekost, inclusief meer dan 100.000 kinderen.... De schrijver van het Avaaz pleidooi voor censuur, ene Andrew Legon, stelt dat de sociale media een massavernietigingswapen zijn tegen LGTB mensen, een wapen dat volgens Avaaz onklaar gemaakt moet worden..... 

Avaaz probeert zo veel mogelijk zieltjes te winnen die doneren zodat figuren als Legon met een 'mooi salaris' naar huis kunnen..... Het is Legon blijkbaar nog niet opgevallen dat je bij de grote platforms op de sociale media kan aankloppen als men haat predikt tegen mensen en mensen bedreigt vanwege hun meningsuiting.....

Censuur op de sociale media is het laatste dat we nodig hebben in een tijd dat de reguliere westerse media elke onafhankelijkheid hebben laten varen en zelf roepen om censuur op de sociale media daar op de platforms van die media wel onafhankelijke journalistiek is te vinden!! Avaaz is een organisatie die overigens al meermaals heeft opgeroepen tot censuur op de soclale media vanwege zogenaamd gebrachte desinformatie en fake news (nepnieuws)...... Terwijl deze organisatie zich verlaat op de reguliere westerse media, die juist zeker de laatste 20 jaar al hebben bewezen enorm veel nepnieuws en desinformatie te hebben gebracht, met de bewijzen kan je een flink archief vullen......

Avaaz heeft zich eerder al totaal belachelijk gemaakt met haar verering van de White Helmets*, een organisatie die hand-en-spandiensten verricht(te) voor terreurgroepen in Syrië, terreurgroepen die zich beschuldigden aan moord, verkrachting, marteling, slavernij, een fiks aantal gifgasaanvallen en ga nog maar even door..... 

Uit het volgende Avaaz bericht blijkt ook dat het een onderdeel is van de Thomson Reuters Foundation, een Canadees nieuwsconglomeraat dat zich tevens voordoet als liefdadigheidsorganisatie, die vreemd genoeg haar hoofdkwartier in Londen heeft en dat is vast en zeker om belastingtechnische redenen...... Niet vreemd dus dat deze organisatie bij monde van Avaaz om censuur schreeuwt op de sociale media..... Moet je nagaan: dan durft Avaaz met grote regelmaat commentaar te leveren op dictators, terwijl censuur één van de eerste zaken is die een nieuwe dictator invoert.....   

Steun nooit petities van Avaaz, daar deze viespeuken juist achter vele soorten van terreur staan, zoals die van de VS in het Midden-Oosten en die van de hiervoor aangehaalde Saoedische terreurcoalitie in Jemen.

Reken maar dat Avaaz bijvoorbeeld dit bericht graag gecensureerd zou willen zien.

Misinformation and hate are being spread about LGBT+ people on social media

Pride month ended this year with Europe divided. 

A rainbow curtain now cuts across the European Union, with Hungary’s anti-LGBT+ law just the latest sign of an increasingly sharp frontier in the fight for LGBT+ rights. All eyes are now on Brussels and the fightback by the European Commission. But they should also be focused on Silicon Valley – for the fight for LGBT+ rights is being fought and lost on social media. 

Hungary’s new law, which bans depictions of homosexuality in school educational materials or TV shows for under-18s, is undoubtedly a political move. Look no further than next year’s election to see the reason why prime minister Viktor Orbán’s authoritarian government has suddenly intensified its scapegoating of LGBT+ people. Copycat legislation is likely in Poland, which is travelling a similar path towards illiberalism.

That path is paved with anti-LGBT+ misinformation. Just as the extremists of the 1930s came to power, and wielded it, on the back of new communication tools such as radio, so too are their modern-day counterparts. Social media is this century’s far-right enabler. 

LGBT+ misinformation is nothing new. But social media has it pumped full of steroids. Algorithms now push out misinformation about our communities to millions. Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the problem himself when he wrote that Facebook had a “basic incentive problem” - “when left unchecked, people will engage disproportionately with more sensationalist and provocative content”. The far right knows this. And they know how to game these algorithms to scapegoat us and weaponise hate and fear. After all, what could be more provocative than the false idea that the LGBT+ community is coming for your kids?

We’ve seen time and again how this has worked in practice. Take Brazil. During the 2018 election**, a proportion of the electorate came to suddenly support a fringe right-wing extremist for President. How? Polls clearly show that they came to believe a series of toxic lies about his opponent spread in large part by social media, including that he had tried to turn the country’s school children gay. 

Domestically, fanning the flames of anti-LGBT+ sentiment helps roll back rights, win power and then hold it. But internationally too, anti-gay lies and hatred are deployed to undermine ideas of universal human rights, build alliances and push back against “Western” influence.

In Georgia – a country on the geopolitical fault line between Russia and the West – the violent attack on the offices of Tbilisi Pride in July was preceded by the proliferation of anti-LGBT+ narratives spread on Georgian far-right Facebook pages. According to research by an anti-misinformation think-tank, many of the narratives “demonised the West and liberal democracy, as well as presented the LGBT community as a threat to Georgia”.

But despite being a frontline target in the war on truth, the LGBT+ movement - arguably one of the most successful in history – seems almost absent from one of the biggest battles of the 21st century: the fight for radical reform of Big Tech. And that absence is taking place not just in the EU but in the US and worldwide. This needs to change, and quickly.

This means that LGBT+ activists and allies must pay as much attention to the people who sit in the boardrooms of Silicon Valley as they do to those sitting on the US Supreme Court or in the governments of illiberal countries now in the heart of Europe. 

It means mobilising marches and people power to influence EU and US moves to rein in misinformation, just as much as protests and placards whenever LGBT+ rights are directly under threat. 

Social media is a weapon of mass LGBT+ destruction. It’s time our community led the fight to disarm it.

De 10 grootste profiteurs van de Coronacrisis en de 3 miljardairs die hun vermogen met een explosief percentage zagen groeien

Chuck Colins vertelt in een artikel op CounterPunch over de grootste profiteurs van de Coronacrisis, dit aan de hand van onderzoek door het Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) en Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF).

Het gecombineerde vermogen van de 657 miljardairs in de VS nam sinds het begin van de Coronacrisis met meer dan 1,3 biljoen dollar toe, ofwel met een percentage van 44,6..... In die 12 maanden raakten meer dan 29 miljoen VS burgers besmet met het Coronavirus, voor wat dat cijfer waard is, immers de PCR test is uiterst onnauwkeurig, echter het aantal doden 'door het virus' zou op 535.000 liggen, en ondanks dat daar gegarandeerd mensen tussen zitten die wellicht symptomen hadden van het virus maar onterecht zijn meegerekend, is het getal behoorlijk groot en dat heeft alles met de grote armoede in de VS te maken, plus het gebrek aan medische zorg voor een heel groot deel van die groep..... 

Tja een slechte gezondheid door armoede gecombineerd met een heftig griepvirus (zoals het Coronavirus) is voor velen dodelijk en zorgt derhalve voor grote oversterfte...... Kortom de miljardairs zijn 1,3 biljoen dollar rijker geworden terwijl de sterfte onder de arme groepen VS burgers groot is..... Tegelijkertijd raakten 80 miljoen arbeiders in de VS hun werk kwijt, waar op 27 februari jl. 18 miljoen mensen een werkloosheidsuitkering kregen (in het land van hoop en glorie krijgt lang niet iedereen een werkloosheidsuitkering, om het maar zacht te zeggen......) Overigens zijn er in de VS minstens 14 miljoen kinderen die honger lijden, vergelijk e.e.a. eens met de stijging van inkomens voor de misdadige grofgraai miljardairs.......

In het eerste jaar van de Coronacrisis nam het aantal miljardairs toe met 44 naar een totaal van 658, ofwel aan het begin van de Coronacrisis waren er 614 waren miljardairs....

Het vermogen van de 15 grootste miljardairs nam toe met 563 miljard dollar, ofwel 82% (!!!), de toename van vermogen onder die 15 miljardairs was 40% van de totale vermogensgroei onder alle miljardairs..... De 3 rijkste van deze 15 zijn Elon Musk, wiens vermogen groeide met 136.5 miljard dollar of 559% (!!!), het vermogen van Jeff Bezos groeide 'slechts met' 65 miljard dollar of 58% en Mark Zuckerbergs vermogen steeg met 'een matige' 47 miljard dollar of 86%........

De cijfers zijn terug te vinden in het CP artikel, waarin de schrijver Chuck Collins o.a. ook de 10 grootste profiteurs van de Coronacrisis noemt.

Een andere exorbitante zelfverrijker is Bill Gates, en deze figuur verdient letterlijk tientallen miljoenen aan de Coronacrisis, daar hij grote aandelen portefeuilles heeft in de farmaceutische industrie, bovendien werkt hij samen met farmaceuten. De nieuwste smerige geldkronkel van deze figuur, nadat hij een Coronapaspoort heeft laten ontwikkelen, ook in de vorm van een onderhuidse chip >> een organisatie als de NAVO die bij pandemieën moet optreden, het zal me niet verbazen als hij deze organisatie ook wil bewapenen, zo kan men onwilligen tegen vaccinaties ter plekke afschieten........ Gates en zijn vrouw Melinda hebben met hun foundation, ook belangen gekocht in de ontwikkeling van Coronavaccins......

Alles hieronder gelezen hebbend begrijp ik steeds minder waarom men niet massaal in opstand komt in de VS!!

Who are the 10 Biggest Pandemic Profiteers?

One year ago, the Institute for Policy Studies published “Billionaire Bonanza 2020: Wealth  Windfalls, Tumbling Taxes and Pandemic Profiteers,”  and began tracking billionaire wealth gains as unemployment surged.  We teamed up with Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) to track the wealth growth of America’s billionaires over the last year.  This report summarizes the extraordinary growth in wealth of those now 657 billionaires based on real-time data from Forbes on March 18, 2021.

Here are highlights from the last 12 months of billionaire wealth growth:

+ The combined wealth of the nation’s 657 billionaires increased more than $1.3 trillion, or 44.6 percent, since the pandemic lockdowns began. [See Master Table] Over those same 12 months, more than 29 million Americans contracted the virus and more than 535,000 died from it. As billionaire wealth soared over, almost 80 million lost work between March 21, 2020, and Feb. 20, 2021, and 18 million were collecting unemployment on Feb. 27, 2021

+ There are 43 newly minted billionaires since the beginning of the pandemic, when there were 614. A number of new billionaires joined the list after initial public offerings (IPOs) of stock in companies such as Airbnb, DoorDash, and Snowflake.

+ The increase in the combined wealth of the 15 billionaires with the greatest growth in absolute wealth was $563 billion or 82 percent. [See table 1] The wealth growth of just these 15 represents over 40 percent of the wealth growth among all billionaires. Topping the list are Elon Musk ($137.5 billion richer, 559 percent), Jeff Bezos ($65 billion, 58 percent) and Mark Zuckerberg ($47 billion, 86 percent).

The 10 biggest “Pandemic Profiteers” saw the greatest percentage increase in their wealth—at least 300 percent. [See Table 2]

They mostly multiplied their fortunes in the world of online goods, services and entertainment, as forcibly homebound Americans shopped, invested and diverted themselves in isolation. They include the owners of ecommerce leaders Quicken Loans, Square, Carvana, and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase; social media sites Snapchat and Twitter; online streaming platform Roku; and digital ad agency Trade Desk. 19 other billionaires experienced increases of over 200% while 48 others more than doubled their fortunes with 100%+ gains.

1. Bom Kim (670 percent/$7.7 billion): A U.S. citizen and founder of the e-commerce giant Coupang, the Amazon of South Korea. Kim’s fortune surged as high as $11 billion after the company’s IPO in early March.

2. Dan Gilbert (642 percent/$41.7 billion): Owner of Quicken Loans, which capitalized on cloistered citizens tapping online financing. Lives in Michigan.

3. Ernest Garcia II (567 percent/$13.6 billion): Biggest shareholder of Carvana, the online car sales and auto-financing giant. Arizona.

4. Elon Musk (559 percent/$137.5 billion): Musk is now the second wealthiest Americans—at nearly $138 billion—as his shares in Tesla, Space-X and other companies that he owns continue to climb. Lives in Texas.

5. Brian Armstrong (550 percent/$5.5 billion): Chief executive of Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country. California resident.

6. Bobby Murphy (531 [ercent/$10.1 billion): Co-founder of Snapchat, with his Stanford fraternity brother, Evan Spiegel. California resident.

7. Evan Spiegel (490 percent/$9.3 billion): Co-founder of Snapchat with his other billionaire super-gainer, Bobby Murphy. California resident.

8. Jack Dorsey (396 percent/$10.3 billion): Co-founder and CEOs of both Twitter and Square, the small business payment app. Lives in California

9. Anthony Wood (331 percent/$5.3 billion): Founder of Roku, which enables online TV video streaming. California resident.

10. Jeff Green (300 percent/$3 billion): Californian founder and chairman of The Trade Desk, a digital advertising firm.

Other notable billionaire wealth gains during the pandemic

Eric Yuan, co-founder of video-conferencing technology Zoom, saw his wealth rise by $8.4 billion during the pandemic year, a gain of 153 percent. A year ago, Yuan had $5.5 billion which increased to $13.9 billion. Last year Zoom paid no federal income taxes on its $660 million in profits, which increased by more than 4,000 percent.

The three owners of Airbnb saw their wealth accelerate thanks to their pandemic year IPO. Brian Chesky’s wealth increased from $4.1 billion to $14.6 billion, a gain of $10.5 billion, an increase of 256 percent. Nathan Blecharazyk and Joe Gebbia, with equal ownership stakes valued at $4.1 billion a year ago, each saw their wealth increase to $13.2 billion, for gains of $9.1 billion each, or 222 percent.

Jim Koch, owner of Boston Beer Company and brewer of the Sam Adams brand, saw his wealth increase from $1.3 billion to $3.2 billion, a gain of $1.9 billion over the pandemic year, or 146 percent.

Dan and Bubba Cathy, the owners of drive-through sensation Chick-Fil-A, saw their combined wealth of $6.8 billion rise to $16.6 billion, a gain of $9.8 billion over the pandemic year, or 144 percent.

Harold Hamm, the politically connected oil and gas fracker, saw his wealth increase from $2.4 billion to $7.5 billion during the pandemic year, an increase of 5.1 billion, or 212.5 percent.

Of 17 industry categories, billionaires in the technology industry had the greatest collective wealth growth—$564 billion, or nearly 68 percent. [See Table 3]

They were worth $1.4 trillion on March 18, 2021, or one-third of the billionaires’ total. The titans of Wall Street—the Finance & Investment industries—saw their wealth grow by $226 billion—a nearly 37 percent increase. Automotive industry billionaires had the biggest percentage point increase in wealth—317 percent based on an increase in wealth of $172 billion. That was largely driven by the extraordinary rise in Elon Musk’s wealth—$137.5 billion or 559 percent.

All but three states saw the wealth of their billionaire residents increase. [See Table 4]

Topping the list in total wealth growth are California at $551 billion, Washingtonat $134.6 billion, and New York at $116.4 billion. The top three states with the greatest percentage increase in wealth are Michigan at 164 percent, Arizona at 110 percent, and Hawaii at 107 percent.

Billionaire wealth growth is calculated between March 18, 2020 and March 18, 2021, based on Forbes data compiled in this report by ATF and IPS. March 18 is used as the unofficial beginning of the crisis because by then most federal and state economic restrictions responding to the virus were in place. March 18 was also the date that Forbes picked to measure billionaire wealth for the 2020 edition of its annual billionaires’ report, which provided a baseline that ATF and IPS compare periodically with real-time data from the Forbes website. In een vijf uur durend parlementair verhoor heeft het congres in de VS (hé!) de CEO's van de grote techbedrijven geëist dat ze een meer agressieve censuur op hun platforms (de sociale media) moeten doorvoeren, aldus Glenn Greenwald, die vervolgd met te zeggen dat het werkelijke repressieve doel van het door de Democraten gedomineerde congres is om de macht van toezicht en censuur op de politieke maatschappelijke 'discussie' van deze techbedrijven naar zichzelf toe te trekken.........

Het congres en een paar sub-comités hebben tijdens deze 5,5 uur durende verhoor meermaals bij 3 tech CEO's aangedrongen om meer politiek inhoud te censureren op hun platforms, waarbij de 3 werden gedreigd met 'wettelijke vergelding' als ze niet voldoen aan deze eis...... Je begrijpt dat e.e.a. het gevolg is van de bestorming van het Capitol op 6 januari jl., waarvoor deze 3 CEO's tijdens het verhoor geen verantwoording op zich wensten te nemen...... Het verhoor was volgens Greenwald een verbluffende weergave van de groeiende autoritaire poging van het congres om de macht die deze techbedrijven van de sociale media hebben op het politieke debat naar zichzelf toe te trekken voor de eigen politieke belangen en doelen..... Kortom men wil de sociale media zoals Facebook, Twitter en Google controleren uit eigenbelang......

De Democratische kwaadaardigheid Lizzie Fletcher suggereerde dat de overheid een lijst met organisaties moet opstellen, die het zelf aanmerkt als binnenlandse terreurorganisatie en waar de genoemde techbedrijven de groepen op die lijst zouden moeten zien als terreurorganisaties ISIS en Al Qaida, ofwel de berichten van die organisaties verwijderen en accounts opheffen..... Let wel: het gaat daarbij niet alleen om rechts radicale of beter gezegd fascistische groepen, die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de bestorming van het Capitol, maar ook om organisaties als Antifa, Black Lives Matter (BLM), vredesgroeperingen en milieuorganisaties...... (in Groot-Brittannië vinden al een aantal dagen demonstraties plaats tegen de wil van politie en politici om demonstraties te kunnen verbieden, ofwel ook daar wil men diverse actiegroepen monddood maken....)

Dit is de derde keer binnen 5 maanden dat men in de VS deze CEO's ter verantwoording riep over de politieke uitingen op hun platforms; moet je nagaan: e.e.a. terwijl die 3 platforms al censuur uitoefenen op hun platforms en dat op schandelijke hoogte, zelfs in ons land worden berichten op die platforms ontoegankelijk gemaakt, zoals Twitter berichten van de politiek activist Sarah Wilkinson over Israëlische agressie tegen Palestijnen, deze zijn meermaals verwijderd van haar platform, of wat dacht je van de censuur die Google en YouTube uitoefenen op berichten en video's van Brasscheck TV.......

Overigens verwijderden Facebook en Twitter al een enorm aantal accounts van Palestijnen die terecht kritiek hadden op het bloedige optreden van Israël, zonder dat ze antisemitische bewoordingen gebruikten...... Israël is al een paar jaar bezig om de westerse landen zover te krijgen dat elke kritiek op Israël moet worden gezien als antisemitisme, de reguliere westerse media dragen daar een flinke steen aan bij, zo kostte dit Jeremy Corbyn de laatste landelijke verkiezingen in Groot-Brittannië, ook de media in ons land deden daar vol vuur aan mee, terwijl Crobyn juist z'n leven lang al een groot tegenstander is van fascisme en antisemitisme......  

Neem ook de censuur op foto's en video's op het internet waarin geweld tegen dieren in de intensieve veehouderij (en daarmee bedoel ik de hele keten, dus ook de slachthuizen) worden gecensureerd, oké je kan na nog een keer klikken de meeste video's nog wel zien, maar foto's worden telkens weer verwijderd..... De nieuwste 'vinding' op censuurgebied is dat je moet bewijzen dat je volwassen bent en dat middels het tonen van een creditcard of je identiteitsbewijs, dan kan het nog 3 dagen duren vioor de video wordt vrijgegeven, ook al zit je al meer dan 18 jaar op de sociale media....... Je kan er donder op zeggen dat de machtige landbouwlobby hier aan de touwtjes trekt...... Zonder probleem kan die lobby smerige misleiding middels video's en berichten op de sociale media plaatsen, daar wordt niet eens gekeken of hier sprake is van misleiding en manipulatie, terwijl daar geen sprake van is bij degenen die de mensheid de waarheid over deze doodsindustrie willen laten zien.......

Vergeet niet dat deze doodsindustrie de klimaatverandering op een gigantische manier aanjaagt, dit middels de uitstoot van CO2 en methaangas (een broeikasgas dat meer dan 80 keer zo sterk is dan CO2), terwijl de landbouw en dan m.n. de intensieve veehouderij in de EU meer CO2 uitstoot dan de totale auto-uitstoot aan CO2 in datzelfde gebied...... Om over het platbranden van oerwoud t.b.v. de sojateelt voor die veehouderij nog maar te zwijgen, ook daarbij komen enorme hoeveelheden CO2 en methaangas vrij, terwijl die enorme bosbranden zelf de klimaatverandering al verder aanjagen......

Het is niet de taak van de sociale media om censuur uit te oefenen, daar zijn zij niet voor in het leven geroepen, immers zij hebben te zorgen dat hun platforms functioneren voor de doorgave van berichten en meningen, hoe discutabel deze ook kunnen zijn, op z'n best mogen ze pas ingrijpen als er tot geweld wordt opgeroepen...... Het is zelfs niet de taak van politici in een zogenaamde democratie om op te roepen tot censuur, immers censuur hoort thuis in een dictatuur...... En tot slot: het is al helemaal niet de taak van de reguliere media om de politiek op te roepen censuur uit te oefenen op de sociale media, wat ze wel doen en dat bij herhaling...... Uiteraard om dat steeds meer mensen deze media volkomen terecht wantrouwen, wegens het brengen van nepnieuws (fake news) en het steunen van de inhumane neoliberale status quo die in het belang is van de eigenaren van die media, dan wel voor de subsidie gevers aan die media, zoals die voor de zogenaamd onafhankelijke zendgemachtigden als de NOS en de NTR (of neem de BBC in Groot-Brittannië)..... Deze zendgemachtigden zijn afhankelijk van de zittende regering (zoals gezegd: voor subsidie) en proberen daarom zoveel mogelijk deze opvolgende regeringen uit de wind te houden, zie hun berichtgeving over de deelname van Nederland aan de illegale door de VS begonnen oorlogen.....

Je kan er dan ook de klok op gelijkzetten dat de schreeuw om censuur in de VS ook in de EU en daarom ook in ons land steeds sterker te horen zal zijn..... Neem hare D66 kwaadaardigheid Ollongren die durfde te zeggen dat Rusland hier referenda en verkiezingen manipuleert, zonder daar ook maar 1 steekhoudend bewijs voor te leveren..... Reken maar dat ze ook voorstander is van censuur op het internet, zogenaamd tegen Russische beïnvloeding, terwijl ze uiteraard ook enorm de pest heeft aan kritiek op haar smerige politiek handelen........

Congress, in a Five-Hour Hearing, Demands Tech CEOs Censor the Internet Even More Aggressively

The repressive objective of the Democratic-controlled Congress is to transfer the power to police and censor political discourse from these tech giants to themselves.

Over the course of five-plus hours on Thursday, a House Committee along with two subcommittees badgered three tech CEOs, repeatedly demanding that they censor more political content from their platforms and vowing legislative retaliation if they fail to comply. The hearing — convened by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Chair Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and the two Chairs of its Subcommittees, Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) — was one of the most stunning displays of the growing authoritarian effort in Congress to commandeer the control which these companies wield over political discourse for their own political interests and purposes.

As I noted when I reported last month on the scheduling of this hearing, this was “the third time in less than five months that the U.S. Congress has summoned the CEOs of social media companies to appear before them with the explicit intent to pressure and coerce them to censor more content from their platforms.” The bulk of Thursday’s lengthy hearing consisted of one Democratic member after the next complaining that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google/Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have failed in their duties to censor political voices and ideological content that these elected officials regard as adversarial or harmful, accompanied by threats that legislative punishment (including possible revocation of Section 230 immunity) is imminent in order to force compliance (Section 230 is the provision of the 1996 Communications Decency Act that shields internet companies from liability for content posted by their users).

Republican members largely confined their grievances to the opposite concern: that these social media giants were excessively silencing conservative voices in order to promote a liberal political agenda (that complaint is only partially true: a good amount of online censorship, like growing law enforcement domestic monitoring generally, focuses on all anti-establishment ideologies, not just the right-wing variant). This editorial censoring, many Republicans insisted, rendered the tech companies’ Section 230 immunity obsolete, since they are now acting as publishers rather than mere neutral transmitters of information. Some Republicans did join with Democrats in demanding greater censorship, though typically in the name of protecting children from mental health disorders and predators rather than ideological conformity.

As they have done in prior hearings, both Zuckerberg and Pichai spoke like the super-scripted, programmed automatons that they are, eager to please their Congressional overseers (though they did periodically issue what should have been unnecessary warnings that excessive “content moderation” can cripple free political discourse). Dorsey, by contrast, seemed at the end of his line of patience and tolerance for vapid, moronic censorship demands, and — sitting in a kitchen in front of a pile of plates and glasses — he, refreshingly, barely bothered to hide that indifference. At one point, he flatly stated in response to demands that Twitter do more to remove “disinformation”: “I don't think we should be the arbiters of truth and I don't think the government should be either.”

Zuckerberg in particular has minimal capacity to communicate the way human beings naturally do. The Facebook CEO was obviously instructed by a team of public speaking consultants that it is customary to address members of the Committee as “Congressman” or “Congresswoman.” He thus began literally every answer he gave — even in rapid back and forth questions — with that word. He just refused to move his mouth without doing that — for five hours (though, in fairness, the questioning of Zuckerberg was often absurd and unreasonable). His brain permits no discretion to deviate from his script no matter how appropriate. For every question directed to him, he paused for several seconds, had his internal algorithms search for the relevant place in the metaphorical cassette inserted in a hidden box in his back, uttered the word “Congressman” or “Congresswoman,” stopped for several more seconds to search for the next applicable spot in the spine-cassette, and then proceeded unblinkingly to recite the words slowly transmitted into his neurons. One could practically see the gears in his head painfully churning as the cassette rewound or fast-forwarded. This tortuous ritual likely consumed roughly thirty percent of the hearing time. I’ve never seen members of Congress from across the ideological spectrum so united as they were by visceral contempt for Zuckerberg’s non-human comportment:

But it is vital not to lose sight of how truly despotic hearings like this are. It is easy to overlook because we have become so accustomed to political leaders successfully demanding that social media companies censor the internet in accordance with their whims. Recall that Parler, at the time it was the most-downloaded app in the country, was removed in January from the Apple and Google Play Stores and then denied internet service by Amazon, only after two very prominent Democratic House members publicly demanded this. At the last pro-censorship hearing convened by Congress, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) explicitly declared that the Democrats’ grievance is not that these companies are censoring too much but rather not enough. One Democrat after the next at Thursday’s hearing described all the content on the internet they want gone: or else. Many of them said this explicitly.

At one point toward the end of the hearing, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX), in the context of the January 6 riot, actually suggested that the government should create a list of organizations they unilaterally deem to be “domestic terror organization” and then provide it tech companies as guidance for what discussions they should “track and remove”: in other words, treat these groups the same was as ISIS and Al Qaeda.       

 

Words cannot convey how chilling and authoritarian this all is: watching government officials, hour after hour, demand censorship of political speech and threaten punishment for failures to obey. As I detailed last month, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that the state violates the First Amendment’s free speech guarantee when they coerce private actors to censor for them — exactly the tyrannical goal to which these hearings are singularly devoted.

There are genuine problems posed by Silicon Valley monopoly power. Monopolies are a threat to both political freedom and competition, which is why economists of most ideological persuasions have long urged the need to prevent them. There is some encouraging legislation pending in Congress with bipartisan support (including in the House Antitrust Subcommittee before which I testified several weeks ago) that would make meaningful and productive strides toward diluting the unaccountable and undemocratic power these monopolies wield over our political and cultural lives. If these hearings were about substantively considering those antitrust measures, they would be meritorious.

But that is hard and difficult work and that is not what these hearings are about. They want the worst of all worlds: to maintain Silicon Valley monopoly power but transfer the immense, menacing power to police our discourse from those companies into the hands of the Democratic-controlled Congress and Executive Branch.

And as I have repeatedly documented, it is not just Democratic politicians agitating for greater political censorship but also their liberal journalistic allies, who cannot tolerate that there may be any places on the internet that they cannot control. That is the petty wannabe-despot mentality that has driven them to police the “unfettered” discussions on the relatively new conversation app Clubhouse, and escalate their attempts to have writers they disliked removed from Substack. Just today, The New York Times warns, on its front page, that there are “unfiltered” discussions taking place on Google-enabled podcasts:

We are taught from childhood that a defining hallmark of repressive regimes is that political officials wield power to silence ideas and people they dislike, and that, conversely, what makes the U.S. a “free” society is the guarantee that American leaders are barred from doing so. It is impossible to reconcile that claim with what happened in that House hearing room over the course of five hours on Thursday.
