Turkije bombardeert eerste Koerdische doelen in Syrië nadat Erdogan aankondigde dat Turkije snel een 'geplande inval' zal uitvoeren

In het WDR nieuws van gisteren 00.00 u. het bericht dat Turkije nog meer troepen samentrekt langs de grens met Syrië, nadat Erdogan op zaterdag aankondigde dat Turkije de al lang voorbereidde inval in Syrië zal uitvoeren, dit om de Koerden 'te verjagen' (lees: zoveel mogelijk vermoorden, waarna de rest als reactie daarop hopelijk wegvlucht).... Nog een 'kleine opmerking': men doet in de westerse reguliere media en politiek alsof Turkije al weet ik hoelang niet in Syrië is geweest, echter Turkije heeft de laatste jaren en ook de laatste maand nog, aanvallen uitgevoerd op Koerdische doelen.....

Anti-Media bracht afgelopen zondag ook al een bericht over de nakende illegale inval van Turkije op Syrisch grondgebied, waar al vele generaties Koerden wonen..... Jason Ditz, de schrijver van het artikel (dat eerder op ANTIWAR verscheen) vertelt over het voornemen van de VS om haar troepen uit het bewuste gebied terug te trekken, daar IS (ISIS) verslagen zou zijn.... 

Ditz beschrijft een gesprek tussen Trump en Erdogan dat dezelfde dag plaatsvond en waarin Trump o.a. de wereld liet weten dat het kalifaat is verslagen en er geen noodzaak was om in onmiddellijke nabijheid van het gebied te blijven, waaraan Trump toevoegde dat de VS zich niet met de illegale oorlogsvoering van Turkije zal bemoeien (al noemde hij zoals je begrijpt e.e.a. uiteraard niet zoals hier beschreven).... Gisteren waarschuwde Trump Turkije (zogenaamd) niet de Koerden aan te vallen, terwijl hij dondersgoed weet dat de Turken zich hier geen zier van zullen aantrekken en op z'n wenken bediend, begonnen vannacht Turkse bombardementen op Koerdische stellingen..... (overigens: in het door de VS bezette gebied in Idlib bevinden zich nog steeds terreurgroepen die de VS tot nu toe verdedigde, een taak die Turkije gezien de geschiedenis zal overnemen.....)

Ditz stelde zichzelf een beetje domme vraag, waarin hij zich afvraagt of de VS dan wel in Syrië zal blijven, terwijl Trump gezegd heeft dat er geen noodzaak meer was om in de directe omgeving van het gebied troepen te houden, daar zoals gezegd IS verslagen zou zijn, hoe onduidelijk kan dat zijn? Niet in het directe gebied van Idlib, echter dat zegt niets over een totale terugtrekking van VS troepen, zoals ik vanmorgen ook weer op Radio1 hoorde (na 9.30 u.) Het gaat hier trouwens om de Syrische provincie Idlib en een aansluitend deel van de provincie Aleppo in het noorden van Syrië)

Kortom: weer laat de VS de Koerden vallen, die voor hen de kastanjes uit het vuur haalden, terwijl de VS NB het vuur had aangestoken en zover ging om IS zelfs van wapens, munitie, (anti-tank en anti-straaljager) raketten en rollend oorlogstuig te voorzien.......

Het lijkt me meer dan duidelijk dat Turkije het S-400 raketsysteem van Rusland zal afzeggen, een andere verklaring is nog niet te vinden voor de beslissing van de VS om Turkije haar smerige en bloedige gang te laten gaan....... Tenzij Erdogan nog een andere troef in z'n met bloed doordrenkte mouw had zitten..

Op BNR gistermorgen BNR's bolle 'buitenlanddeskundige' Hammelburg (volgens zichzelf de beste buitenlanddeskundige van Nederland... ha! ha! ha!), deze 'specialist' stelde dat Turkije heeft getoond een geduchte tegenstander van IS te zijn.... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Turkije heeft de met bloed doordrenkte olie van IS gekocht en alleen daarmee al de terreur van IS tegen de Syrische bevolking gesteund.... Niet alleen dat: als de VS heeft ook Turkije wapens en munitie geleverd aan IS....... Ach ja, Hammelburg, jezus wat een knurft!!

Weer zal de wereld getuige zijn van de vreselijke en bloedige terreur die Turkije tegen burgers zal gebruiken en weer zullen de NAVO-lidstaten hun kop houden, i.p.v. Turkije de les te lezen en te dreigen met sancties, om te beginnen uit het bondgenootschap te zetten, zoals wel zou moeten.... En daar betalen wij belasting voor, sterker nog om de terreur die de NAVO uitoefent op peil te houden gaan we de komende jaren nog meer afdragen aan de NAVO, de terreurorganisatie onder militair commando van NAVO-lid en terreurentiteit VS.....

US Troops Will Withdraw From Northeast Syria to Avoid Imminent Turkish Invasion

(ANTIWAR.COM) — In a surprise announcement late Sunday night, the White House Press Secretary released a statement that said, “Today, President Donald J. Trump spoke with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey by telephone. Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation in Northern Syria. The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in that operation, and the United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial “Caliphate,” will no longer be in the immediate area.”

The statement does not make it clear if U.S. troops will fully withdraw from Syria or if they will just relocate. The statement also says, “Turkey will now be responsible for all ISIS fighters in the area captured over the past two years.”

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Saturday that it would “not hesitate to turn any unprovoked attack by Turkey into an all-out war” to defend the region of northeast Syria that it controls.

The SDF responded to a threat by Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan, who said on Saturday that Turkey will soon launch an “air and ground military operation” in northeastern Syria and warned it could happen “as soon as today or tomorrow.” The SDF is led by the Syrian Kurdish Militia YPG, who the Turkish government considers to be a terrorist organization.

In August, Turkey and the U.S. agreed to create a safe zone in Kurdish controlled Syria along the Turkish border to settle some two million Syrian refugees. Part of the deal was to clear the area of all the Kurdish fighters, which Erdogan complains the U.S. military has failed to do.

Erdogan and President Trump also agreed to meet in Washington next month to discuss the issues with the safe zone in northeastern Syria.

Washington has always hoped to avoid a military confrontation between Turkey and the YPG. The shortsighted policy of arming and backing an enemy of Turkey so close to their border was bound to have dangerous consequences.

BBC World Service spreekt over Syrië nu van 'oppositionele troepen' i.p.v. terreurgroepen

Vannacht op BBC World Service (het radionieuws van 1.30 u. CET) het bericht dat het reguliere Syrische leger posities van oppositionele troepen aanvalt in de provincie Aleppo.... Gevolgd door de toevoeging dat vooral medische posten worden aangevallen......

Je had al begrepen dat met oppositionele troepen, terreurgroepen worden bedoeld, groepen die ondanks hun gruwelijke en bloedige daden eerder al werden neergezet als 'gematigde rebellen', ook Nederland heeft een aantal van deze groepen gesteund met ons belastinggeld, een zaak waarvoor geen kop is gerold in Rutte 3 (terwijl die terreurgroepen letterlijk mensen hebben onthoofd en nog onthoofden....).....

De toevoeging dat vooral medische posten worden aangevallen door het Syrische leger, is een herhaling van zetten, men vertelde dezelfde leugens bij de bevrijding van de stad Aleppo, toen het Syrische leger en de Russen het oostelijk deel van die stad hebben ontzet van de vreselijke terreur van o.a. IS, al Nusra en nog een paar andere terreurgroepen.... Een actie die door het westen werd veroordeeld en als je de anti-Assad propaganda moest geloven, had het oostelijk deel van Aleppo minstens 100 ziekenhuizen, die op dagelijkse basis 'werden aangevallen....'

Deze propaganda werd met grote verontwaardiging door de westerse massamedia gebracht, terwijl al snel bleek dat het om leugens ging (nepnieuws), leugens waarmee het Syrische leger en de Russen werden gedemoniseerd en die tot stopzetten van de bevrijding van Oost-Aleppo moest leiden..... De bevolking van Oost-Aleppo was dolblij toen de terroristen werden verslagen door het Syrische leger en de Russen en ze onder het juk van dat terreurtuig uit was.....

De verschillende gelovigen uit Oost-Aleppo stonden hand in hand om hun bevrijders te begroeten, zoals men ook samenleefde voordat de VS begon met het zaaien van terreur in Syrië en het land in een oorlog dompelde....... Deze zaak bereidde de VS al vanaf 2006 voor, om zo Assad af te kunnen zetten*, daar hij pijpleidingen over Syrische grondgebied richting Europa weigerde....... Bovendien is Syrië door de VS te gebruiken als springplank richting Iran, een land dat de VS maar al te graag van een andere regime zou willen voorzien.....

De reguliere media hadden destijds geen (of een enkele 'verdwaalde') journalisten in Syrië en toch deed men alsof alle berichten uit eerste en onverdachte hand kwamen, zoals de berichten van het SOHR, het Syrische Observatorium voor Mensenrechten, een organisatie die is gevestigd in Engeland en die wordt geleid door een gewezen ordinaire misdadiger, die Syrië was ontvlucht om gevangenisstraf te voorkomen, een ploert die goede banden onderhoudt met de terreurgroepen in Syrië en vooral de valse berichten ('fake news' en propaganda) van deze terroristen bracht en nog brengt (o.a. op de BBC en NOS...).....

* Eerst middels een opstand, die met onvrede over de economische gang van zaken werd gekweekt, een economische neergang die door toedoen van de VS werd veroorzaakt, een door de VS beproefde gang van zaken, die deze terreurentiteit ook heeft gebruikt en/of gebruikt tegen o.a. Libië, Venezuela en Iran.......

Radio1 NOS Journaal: 8 minuten gezwets over het 'Willem Alexander-zoekboek'

Mensen Radio1 is verworden tot een sport, sport, lullige weetjes, suffe muziekjes, bergen reclames en nog wat nieuws zender.

Bovendien is deze zender het podium voor mannen die willen dat vrouwen nooit het glazenplafond doorbreken, zie de stom vervelende en meer dan achterlijk macho aankondigingen van Hans Hogendoorn, die gemiddeld 5 keer vaker is te horen op Radio1, dan zijn 'vrouwelijke evenknie' Eva Zeijlstra......

Gistermorgen schakelde ik over naar Radio1, rond 9.17 u. waar illustrator Emanuel Wiemans, de maker van het grote Willem Alexander zoekboek, werd 'geïnterviewd......'

Ongelofelijk maar waar, bij nazoeken bleek dat dit onderwerp meer dan 8 minuten lang heeft geduurd (stemde zelf uiteraard vliegensvlug af op een andere zender).........

(De meer dan bolle Willem Alexander bij de 'Koningsspelen', er is geen foto van deze gebeurtenis te vinden zonder domme grijns van het nationale waterhoofd; benieuwd of er op de school van z'n dochters ook gekleurde kinderen zijn toegelaten.....) 

Dit soort aandacht is dan ook de zoveelste poging om het sjoemelende koningshuis, dat zelfs Nederlandse kunstschatten verkoopt aan het buitenland, als populair neer te zetten. Het koningshuis 'is zo populair' dat het nationale condoleance register na de dood van Johan Friso door iets meer dan 20.000 mensen werd getekend........

Hoe is het mogelijk en daar betalen we met z'n allen belastinggeld voor...... In dezelfde tijd had men aandacht aan de terroristische raketaanvallen op Aleppo kunnen besteden, aanvallen waarbij 11 mensen zijn omgekomen.......* Maar nee daar was geen tijd voor, wel voor het Willem Alexander zoekboek....... Walgelijk!!!

Ben ik toch nog wat vergeten wat betreft Radio1: deze zender fungeert tevens als propagandaorgaan van het koningshuis, al bleek dit al uit het voorgaande in dit bericht. Op Radio1 had men tijdens de koningsspelen dit gebeuren ieder uur als 'deelonderwerp.......'

BBC: terreuraanslag Aleppo werk van anti-regeringsrebellen

Vannacht op BBC World Service radionieuws van 1.30 u. het bericht dat er in Aleppo een aanslag werd gepleegd, die aan meerdere mensen het leven heeft gekost.

De presentator stelde dat de Syrische regering spreekt van een aanslag gepleegd door terroristen, waaraan ze toe durfde te voegen: "Meaning anti government rebels..."

Ondanks dat er al sprake was van meerdere doden, stelt de nieuwsredactie van de BBC 'doodleuk' dat de terroristen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor een aanslag, 'rebellen' zijn en geen terroristen........

Hoeveel bewijs wil je nog dat de BBC berichtgeving totaal afhankelijk is en dat het dodelijke buitenlandbeleid van Groot-Brittannië (zie het Midden-Oosten) met grote graagte wordt uitgedragen als heilzaam, waarbij men terroristen zelfs aanduidt als rebellen.......

Intussen zijn gisteren in Aleppo bij meerdere raketaanvallen van zogenaamde gematigde rebellen, 11 mensen om het leven gekomen en zijn er nog eens 11 burgers (zwaar) gewond geraakt...... Onder andere een markt werd geraakt door een raket (gegarandeerd van VS makelij)...... Kon tot dit moment, 14.45 u., niets vinden over deze aanslag in de Nederlandse media.....

Ook dat laatste kan je zien als een vorm van manipulatie, immers bij het wel melden van deze vreselijke misdaden zou men de schuld moeten geven aan anti-Assad terreurgroepen, die in het verleden ook door Nederland werden gesteund (als 'gematigde rebellen), zoals vorig jaar middels onderzoek werd aangetoond...... Zoals je wellicht wel weet, is er voor de reguliere westerse media maar één schuldige partij in Syrië en dat is de democratisch gekozen regering Assad.......

Kijk als het reguliere Syrische leger een raket had afgeschoten waardoor 2 burgers waren omgekomen, was het internationaal weer groot nieuws geweest waarover men moord en brand had geschreeuwd, zelfs als er voor die claim geen flinter aan bewijs werd geleverd......

Meer bewijs voor VS betrokkenheid bij transport en bevrijding van IS leden

Alexander Rubinstein publiceerde een artikel over de verbintenis van de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten (VAE) en IS, waar hij in de kop de vraag stelt of de door de VS gesteunde VAE leiders van IS naar Jemen heeft getransporteerd. De vraag stellen is haar beantwoorden: ja dus. Opvallend dat Rubinstein daar zo verbaasd over is, immers de opgestapte president Al-Hadi (onder druk van S-A is hij nu juntaleider) werd gedwongen af te treden daar hij IS en Al Qaida onderdak had gegeven in Jemen......

Deze twee soennitische terreurgroepen begingen daarna moorden en ander barbaarsheden tegen de voornamelijk sjiitische bevolking van Jemen, de mensen waren zelfs in moskeeën niet veilig voor de terreur van deze groepen....... Daarop bonden de Houthi rebellen, gesteund door een deel van het Jemenitisch leger, de strijd aan met IS, Al Qaida en de al-Hadi getrouwe militaire macht...... Samen met de Koerden in Syrië waren de Houthi rebellen in Jemen de eersten die succesvol IS bestreden.

Dat succes stak het soennitische Saoedi-Arabië en zij zetten de gevluchte al-Hadi onder druk het presidentschap weer op te nemen zodat hij S-A te hulp kon roepen om de haar getrouwe terroristen van IS en Al Qaida bij te staan in de strijd tegen de Houthi-rebellen......

De VS heeft overigens aan de wieg van IS gestaan, samen met Egypte, Turkije en Saoedi-Arabië (en naar het schijnt zou Israël ook een rol hebben gespeeld), niet voor niets dat deze landen het vervoer regelden voor IS leden uit Libië, die werden getransporteerd naar Irak waar ze over de grens met Syrië werden gebracht, inclusief wapens, munitie en pickup trucks.......

Voordat Rusland begon met de steun voor het reguliere Syrische leger in de strijd tegen de zogenaamde gematigde rebellen, is de VS meermaals betrapt op het bombarderen van woestijngebied, zonder dat daar een strijder te bekennen was, echter volgens de VS waren dat bombardementen tegen IS....... Vandaar ook dat het jaar voordat Rusland ingreep er praktisch geen successen werden geboekt door de VS coalitie tegen IS, een coalitie die zogenaamd IS bestreed...... Rusland was duidelijk het kantelpunt voor IS, dat de ene na de andere klap te verduren kreeg.... Na de successen van het reguliere Syrische leger en de Russen tegen groepen als IS kon ook de VS-NAVO coalitie niet anders doen dan af en toe terreurgroepen raken.......

Onlangs gaf de VS nota bene toe dat IS ook vocht in het Syrische Aleppo, terwijl men dat destijds glashard ontkende, er zouden alleen 'gematigde terreurgroepen' (die niet bestaan en niet bestonden) aanwezig zijn geweest in Aleppo........

Voorts blijkt keer op keer dat wapens uit de VS in handen zijn van terreurgroepen o.a. in Jemen, hier een link naar een YouTube pagina met meerdere video's over terreurgroepen met VS wapens. (het Pentagon zijn de laatste jaren miljarden verdwenen, daarmee is de vraag deels beantwoord waar dat geld heenging...... (naar terreurgroepen!)

An Unholy Alliance: Did the US-Backed UAE Fly ISIS Leaders into Yemen’s Killing Fields?

The de facto alliance between the U.S. with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, AQAP, and now allegedly ISIS in Yemen has led to one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern history,

ADEN, YEMEN — Ali Abdullah al-Bujairi — a Yemeni politician who served as a senior member on the failed UN-brokered transitional government and as Yemen’s ambassador to Iraq under former president Ali Abdullah Saleh — is accusing the United Arab Emirates of facilitating a transfer of ISIS officials into Yemen.

“The UAE has recently transferred an ISIL commander namely Abu Bakr al-Zokhri (with Sudanese nationality) — nom de guerre, Khaibar al-Sumali — from Iraq to Aden in Yemen to recruit and strengthen the ISIL in Yemen,” al-Bujairi told Qatari media.

Since the toppling of ISIS’ so-called caliphate — with Raqqa, Syria as its capital — the terrorist organization has gained a foothold in a number of other countries. In Afghanistan, Russia and Iran have accused the U.S. of helping to facilitate the group’s spread.

Despite its loss of territory in Iraq and Syria, “ISIL is still active in ten countries in 2017,” according to the 2018 Global Terrorism Index report from the Institute for Economics & Peace, which further states:

The collapse of ISIL in Iraq and Syria has moved the group’s activities elsewhere, in particular to the Maghreb and Sahel regions, most notably in Libya, Niger, and Mali, and Southeast Asia, most notably the Philippines.”

In 2017, the terror group’s reach was felt in many corners of the world. The report states: “ISIL committed attacks in 286 cities around the world in four different regions:  Asia-Pacific, Europe, MENA [Middle East and North Africa], and the Russia and Eurasia region.” However, those hit hardest by the group’s terror have mostly been in the Middle East and North Africa. The report concludes:

Of all ISIL attacks, 98 percent of incidents and 98 percent of deaths occurred within the MENA region. Ninety percent of all terror attacks and 81 percent of terror-related deaths from ISIL occurred in Iraq alone.”

These figures, however, do not include the Islamic State’s chapter in Afghanistan, referred to as the Khorasan Group (ISIS-K), nor does it include ISIS affiliates in Egypt.

The campaign by the U.S. with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, AQAP, and now allegedly ISIS in Yemen has led to one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern history, with large portions of the population at risk for starvation, millions displaced, and scores of civilians and children killed, MintPress News has reported.

While the Saudi-led coalition’s dealings with the Yemen affiliate of ISIS remain largely unexplored, the main partners have their own ties to al-Qaeda in the country. This unholy alliance meant to depose the Houthis, has seen the coalition, of which the supposedly democratic government of the U.S. became a member without prior authorization from Congress, work hand-in-glove with al-Qaeda.

Running with cynical circles

Little is known about the presence of ISIS in Yemen, with the numbers of fighters believed to be in the low- to mid-hundreds, according to the UN Security Council. The U.S. conducted a grand total of 36 airstrikes against terrorist groups in the country in 2018, but the overwhelming majority targeted the much larger Al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and the U.S. has not struck ISIS in Yemen since January 2018.

While ISIS has attacked Houthi and Shia Muslim targets in Yemen, it has no territory. AQAP, on the other hand, controls large swaths of the southeast. According to the Global Terrorism Index, “Adan-Abyan Province of the Islamic State is primarily active in the southern coastal province of Adan, while AQAP in active in the provinces of Abyan and Lahij, and Ansar Allahin Taizz and Marib.” Other ISIS affiliates once existed in Yemen but have since dwindled out.

While the extent and nature of U.S. relations with ISIS in Yemen is unclear, its relationship with its regional rival AQAP, which is best described as that of “frenemies,” is more widely known.

In December, the U.S. Congress voted to end support for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen, but the U.S. remains authorized to fight on Yemeni soil because of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). This document also provided the U.S. cover for its war in Syria. The bill allows for the use of force against groups associated with attacks on 9/11, and ISIS was tenuously linked to al-Qaeda.

However, the U.S. was a member of the Saudi-led coalition for years. This partnership became unpalatable to mainstream media pundits and audiences over the summer when a U.S.-made bomb was used by Saudi Arabia on a bus in an airstrike that left 40 children dead.

While AQAP is the ostensible enemy of the United States, they appear to be a friend of a friend in the very least. In February, it was revealed that Saudi Arabia and the UAE gave U.S.-made weapons to al-Qaeda fighters in the country. CNN reports:

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, its main partner in the war, have used the U.S.-manufactured weapons as a form of currency to buy the loyalties of militias or tribes, bolster chosen armed actors, and influence the complex political landscape.

One of those militias linked to AQAP, the Abu Abbas brigade, now possesses U.S.-made Oshkosh armored vehicles, paraded in a 2015 show of force through the city.

Abu Abbas, the founder, was declared a terrorist by the U.S. in 2017, but the group still enjoys support from the Saudi coalition and was absorbed into the coalition-supported 35th Brigade of the Yemeni army.

In October 2015, military forces loyal to the government boasted on Saudi- and UAE-backed media that the Saudis had airdropped American-made TOW anti-tank missiles on the same frontline where AQAP had been known to operate at the time.”

Speculation that the Saudi-led coalition was working with terrorists was finally legitimized in the mainstream media over the summer, when the Associated Press revealed that “the coalition cut secret deals with al-Qaeda fighters, paying some to leave key cities and towns and letting others retreat with weapons, equipment and wads of looted cash, [while] hundreds more were recruited to join the coalition itself.”

Shockingly, the AP revealed that

Coalition-backed militias actively recruit al-Qaida militants, or those who were recently members, because they’re considered exceptional fighters…

In one case, a tribal mediator who brokered a deal between the Emiratis and al-Qaeda even gave the extremists a farewell dinner.”

The U.S. had been fighting on two fronts in Yemen: one against Al-Qaeda, in closer partnership with the UAE; and another alongside the Saudi-led coalition, which includes the UAE, against the Houthi government. The latter was, of course, the priority. In contrast to the 36 bombing missions the U.S. conducted against AQAP and the ISIS affiliate in Yemen in 2018, the U.S. refueled coalition fighter jets more than 9,000 times between March 2015 and July 2017.

This dynamic has fostered an alliance of convenience between the U.S. and AQAP, materialized by the flow of U.S.-made weapons from the U.S. to gulf monarchies, which, in violation of U.S. rules, use them as bargaining chips with jihadists.

In fact, the U.S. was “aware of an al-Qaeda presence among the anti-Houthi ranks,” AP said, citing a “senior American official.” Even the Saudi-backed former president of Yemen, Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, “tapped” Adnan Rouzek to be a “top military commander.” Rouzek was a senior al-Qaeda official who escaped from prison in 2008 with other members and continues to be photographed with known al-Qaeda operatives. His militia under Hadi “became notorious for kidnappings and street killings, with one online video showing its masked members shooting a kneeling, blindfolded man.”

In November 2017, Hadi picked Rouzek to coordinate the military campaign and serve as a top commander of a new fighting force, and gave him $12 million for a new offensive.

Another “coalition-backed warlord is on the U.S. list of designated terrorists due to his ties to al-Qaeda.” That warlord is Sheikh Aboul Abbas.

One security official told AP that “Aboul Abbas’ forces attacked security headquarters in 2017 and freed a number of al-Qaeda suspects.” He said he reported the attack to the coalition, but the perpetrators were rewarded with “40 more pickup trucks.” “The more we warn, the more they are rewarded,” he told AP. “Al-Qaeda leaders have armored vehicles given to them by the coalition while security commanders don’t have such vehicles.”

“Elements of the U.S. military are clearly aware that much of what the U.S. is doing in Yemen is aiding AQAP and there is much angst about that,” terrorism expert Michael Horton told AP at the time. Horton called parts of the U.S.-UAE campaign against AQAP a “farce.”

While Saudi Arabia has been roundly denounced for its attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Yemen, particularly since the unrelated slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, less attention has been paid to allegations of UAE war crimes in the country. NGOs and reporters have accused the country of running a network of secret prisons in the south that use torture as a feature of detention.

Degrading an enemy whose presence is “exaggerated”

While the UAE is now being accused of helping to spread ISIS into new theaters of conflict, the U.S. was accused of doing the same in Afghanistan last year.

The Afghanistan-based affiliate “was responsible for 14 percent of terrorism deaths, or 658 people, in 2017, a 26 percent increase from the prior year,” according to the Global Terrorism Index report. In neighboring Pakistan, ISIS affiliates were “responsible for 233 deaths.”

Meanwhile, the “two deadliest attacks in South Asia” in 2017 “were committed by the Khorasan Chapter of the Islamic State in Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing 93 and 91 persons respectively.”

On repeated occasions last year, Moscow and Tehran accused Washington of using unmarked helicopters to transfer Daesh fighters into the Haska Meyna region in Afghanistan where ISIS is active.

In March of 2018, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told a congregation of diplomats, academics and journalists in Pakistan:

We see intelligence, as well as eyewitness accounts, that Daesh fighters, terrorists, were airlifted from battle zones, rescued from battle zones, including recently from the prison of Haska [Meyna].”

This time, it wasn’t unmarked helicopters. They were American helicopters, taking Daesh out of Haska prison. Where did they take them? Now, we don’t know where they took them, but we see the outcome. We see more and more violence in Pakistan, more and more violence in Afghanistan, taking a sectarian flavor.”

After Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made a big deal out of ISIS’s presence in an April press conference in Pakistan, U.S. officials went into defense mode, with General John Nicholson, NATO’s Afghanistan commander, and the mission’s public-affairs director swearing that the Russian claims were exaggerated and arguing that there was “little evidence” that ISIS was expanding in the country.

Yet, according to an earlier report from the U.S. government-funded Voice of America, U.S. troops “routinely accompany the Afghan forces into battle against [ISIS].”

Flash forward to August, when NATO confirmed that it had killed ISIS’ leader in Afghanistan, Abu Sayeed Orakzai, as well as 10 other fighters. As NBC Newsnoted at the time the U.S. estimated that there were about 2,000 ISIS fighters in the country, while local Afghan leaders claim that Orakzai was the “fourth” ISIS leader to be killed in less than a year.

Hele Syrische families in Raqqa uitgemoord door de VS

Dagelijks is men nog bezig om de lijken onder het puin vandaan te halen, zoals de skeletten van 2 Syrische meisjes...... Het zijn dan ook vooral burgerslachtoffers die men vindt in de ruïnes en massagraven.... Tot nu toe zijn meer dan 2.600 vermoorde slachtoffers gevonden, maar dat moeten er volgens de bevolking ter plaatse, duizenden meer zijn......... Er zijn overigens veel meer burgerslachtoffers gevallen in Raqqa dan IS terroristen......

Uit het hieronder opgenomen artikel wordt ten overvloede nog eens gemeld dat terreurgroep IS, als andere terreurgroepen ('gematigde rebellen') eerder, de bevolking verbood Raqqa te verlaten, op straffe van de dood...... Ik meld dit daar de reguliere westerse media en bijvoorbeeld het Syrisch Observatorium voor Mensenrechten (SOHR, geleid door een misdadiger) keer op keer met de leugen kwamen dat het reguliere Syrische legger vluchtelingen zou hebben doodgeschoten, zoals bij de belegering van Oost-Aleppo....... Terwijl het Syrische leger en de Russen juist vluchtcorridors instelden voor de bevolking, die zoals gezegd door scherpschutters van de 'gematigde rebellen' (financieel gesteund met o.a. ons belastinggeld...) onder vuur werden genomen.......

De VN en een paar landen smeekten de VS destijds te stoppen met de bombardementen op Raqqa, maar dat was als bij de eerdere belegering van het Iraakse West-Mosul tevergeefs...... 'Vreemd overigens' dat dit feit destijds niet of amper werd gemeld door de reguliere westerse media en als het al gemeld werd, dan weggestopt bijvoorbeeld op de laatste pagina van kranten behorend tot die westerse media..... (niet 'vreemd' dus, immers men staat bij die 'onafhankelijke' media ten volle achter de terreur die de VS uitoefent, waar dan ook over de wereld en die media gebruiken daarvoor niet alleen 'fake news' (nepnieuws), maar zoals gemeld verzwijgen ook simpel 'bepaalde nieuwsfeiten......')

‘Entire Families Wiped Out': US Airstrikes Killed Many Civilians in Syria

On a busy street corner in Raqqa, Syria, a digger pushes through the rubble of a building hit by an airstrike. Onlookers shield their mouths and noses from the dust and stench of corpses of those who perished beneath.

Just streets away, three recovery workers pull out the delicate skeletons of two children from under the debris of a partially collapsed home. And across the city, in what was once Raqqa's public park, men unearth more bodies from a mass grave.

"Raqqa did not deserve this destruction," says Yasser al-Khamis, who leads the city's emergency response team. "Of course, we understood its fate because it was the capital of ISIS, but we were hoping that the civilian death toll would be lower."

One year after the U.S.-led military campaign against ISIS ended in Raqqa, Khamis' team is still recovering the remains of the battle's casualties. This grim, daily work is revealing a civilian death toll that is dramatically higher than the assessment offered by the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS.

Yasser al-Khamis leads Raqqa's First Responders Team, a U.S.-funded group tasked with emergency work including pulling the bodies of casualties out of the rubble from the war against ISIS.

The rescue workers' findings, which they document in meticulous notes shown to NPR, point to an offensive that killed many more civilians than it did ISIS members, and where the majority of those civilians likely died in American airstrikes.

The U.S.-led coalition against ISIS has so far verified 104 unintended civilian casualties caused by its attacks in Raqqa and is investigating more cases, coalition spokesman Army Col. Sean Ryan tells NPR.

"With new information being submitted to the CivCas [civilian casualties] team by a multitude of sources every month, the numbers will presumably go up," Ryan adds.

The workers in Raqqa, however, estimate the real tally is much higher — likely in the "thousands."

Since January, the rescue team has uncovered more than 2,600 bodies. Through their identification process, they say they have found that most of the bodies were civilians killed in coalition airstrikes during the battle for Raqqa between June and October 2017.

Formally called the First Responders Team, the group receives funding from the U.S. government, but the assistance is limited. Its approximately 37 members work long hours for little pay — some are volunteers — and say their efforts are slowed by a lack of heavy machinery needed to access the bodies.

With many more corpses still under rubble, the rescue workers estimate it will take another year to clean the city of the dead.

Faster strikes and artillery barrages

Raqqa served as the capital of ISIS' self-proclaimed caliphate for almost four years after the militant group seized the city in 2014.

The U.S.-led coalition's offensive on Raqqa came after several years of fighting the extremist group in Iraq and other parts of Syria.

While campaigning for president, Donald Trump vowed to "bomb the s*** out of" ISIS.

In the months following his January 2017 swearing-in, conflict analysts reported increases in both the numbers of U.S. airstrikes and of civilians reported killed in the attacks.

President Trump reportedly handed decision-making power for major bombardments to the military, enabling airstrikes to be more easily called in by commanders on the ground during a battle.

In May 2017, Defense Secretary James Mattis told CBS News the U.S. was accelerating and intensifying the campaign against ISIS, and added, "We have already shifted from attrition tactics ... to annihilation tactics."

In Raqqa, the consequences of the "annihilation tactics" are still keenly felt.

According to Airwars, an independent research group monitoring the anti-ISIS conflicts in Iraq and Syria, the U.S. was responsible for about 95 percent of the airstrikes and all of the artillery barrages in Raqqa. The U.K. and France also participated in the offensive.

Data given to Airwars by the U.S. military's central command show the coalition launched at least 21,000 munitions — airstrikes and artillery — in the city in little over four months.

"Entire families have been wiped out"

By the end of the campaign, Raqqa was a wasteland of smashed concrete; its residential tower blocks were flattened and schools and hospitals toppled. A United Nations study found that over 80 percent of the city — originally home to some 220,000 people — is damaged or destroyed.

Many residents say they lost loved ones in the strikes.

Mohanned Tadfi, 41, recently buried his mother, his brother, his sister-in-law and seven nieces and nephews. "Ten people," he says. "A plane came and hit the house and the building of five floors fell on their heads."

Tadfi says his brother Latuf had found it too hard and dangerous for his family to leave. "ISIS was executing anyone from his neighborhood who tried to escape. And in any case, our mother is diabetic and can't walk well, and it was too difficult [to] carry her because the bridges out of the city had been bombed."

The family stayed in their basement apartment as the war intensified around them. The Syrian Democratic Forces, a U.S.-backed militia, was closing in on the neighborhood and the family thought the fighters would soon capture the area from ISIS.

On Sept. 5, 2017, just after a muezzin in a nearby mosque called the end of noon prayers, an airstrike hit the building where Tadfi's family was. Another brother, Raed Tadfi, went to deliver insulin for their mother. He found Latuf dead on the steps and the building collapsed behind him.

Days later, SDF fighters seized control of the neighborhood. Tadfi says he and his brother asked the militia for access to the house. "Please, there are children under the rubble. My brother's children, young kids. Maybe even just one of them is still alive!" he recalls asking them.

But they were told the area was too dangerous for civilians. It wasn't until three months later that Tadfi was finally able to recover his loved ones. He hired a flatbed truck and took them away to graves he says he dug with his own hands.

The Tadfis' story is one of the cases being looked at by Donatella Rovera, a senior crisis response adviser for Amnesty International who has spent much of the last year in Raqqa. She compiles witness testimonies and analyzes war damage to buildings as part of an ongoing investigation to determine how many civilians were really killed in the coalition attacks.

"This is one case of many that I have been investigating where entire families have been wiped out in places where they thought they would be safe," she says, standing beside the wreckage of the Tadfis home.

Determining casualties

In a statement responding to NPR, Col. Ryan, the spokesman of the Combined Joint Task Force, said the coalition conducted "thorough assessments" to ensure it didn't accidentally kill civilians. "The majority of strikes were executed as planned, but to say this was perfect execution from all sides is meaningless and we understand mistakes were made."

He said the coalition was "fighting a ruthless enemy that was systematically killing innocent civilians and unfortunately some were unintentionally killed trying to liberate them, something we tried to avoid."

Rovera doesn't dispute that ISIS tried to prevent civilians from leaving. But, she says,the military knew that before the battle and did not adjust their attack plan accordingly.

Her investigation so far suggests that "many hundreds" of civilians were killed in the Raqqa offensive, which she says prioritized speed, even in densely populated neighborhoods.

Testimony Rovera gathered from embedded journalists and SDF militia sources suggests that strikes sometimes came "within minutes" of a local commander choosing a target.

"If they had had observation for an adequate period of time, they would have realized that there were civilians in those buildings," she says. "Yes, the war probably would have taken more time. But more lives would have been saved."

The rescue unit says it determined most of the more than 2,600 recovered bodies were civilians in a few different ways. ISIS combatants often dressed a specific way and carried an ID card, the workers say. Other characteristics, such as victims' age and gender and testimony from families, also help in the team's documentation.

Rescuers say they recognize airstrike scenes from the scale of the destruction.

Airwars puts the civilian death toll in the Raqqa offensive at 1,400, but it believes the number could be higher. It gathers data largely remotely, through communication with sources and information from social media, and has not been able to verify every reported case.

"We expected a significantly higher portion of civilian harm reports to be determined as credible, since in Raqqa really the only player causing the destruction was the coalition," says Chris Woods, the director of Airwars.

He explains that the coalition has assessed and accepted only a fraction of the casualty reports from Raqqa than it did from the major campaign to drive ISIS from Mosul, Iraq, from October 2016 to July 2017.

"That suggests a political dimension to the decision-making process," he says. "We can't think of another explanation for that discrepancy."

Rovera, the Amnesty International adviser, says it is imperative that coalition forces send ground investigators into Raqqa. "Having dropped the bombs from the sky they should now be sending their investigators on the ground now to establish the facts of what was the impact of those strikes on the civilian population," she says.

Col. Ryan from the coalition said the existing coalition forces in Syria are not a trained investigative force and taking them away "from their mission is not advisable as the fight against this ruthless enemy continues."

For now, Raqqa's people are left to count their dead largely alone, while the U.S. and other powers strike elsewhere in Syria.
