Libië, zomaar wat BBC propaganda over de oorlog tegen dit land

Hoorde gistermiddag op BBC World Service radio een onderwerp over de strijd die nu weer gaande is in Libië. De presentator stelde doodleuk dat bij de opstand van 2011 in Libië, de 'rebellen' in een paar maanden tijd 'de regering omverwierpen......'

Ten eerste was de opstand in Libië het werk van de CIA dat al langer liep te kloten in Libië en ten tweede werden die 'rebellen' door de VS op pad gestuurd..... Ten derde: zonder de VS (onder 'vredesduif' Obama, met grote inzet van Hillary Clinton) en haar oorlogshond NAVO hadden die zogenaamde rebellen, waarvan de belangrijkste: Al Qaida en IS, Khadaffi er nooit onder gekregen.........

Zo worden dus miljoenen mensen dagelijks voorgelicht, of beter gezegd: opgelicht door de BBC, want deze zender trekt wereldwijd een enorm aantal bezoekers.......

Het volk 'had het zo slecht' onder Khadaffi 'dat het in opstand kwam': zo genoten Libiërs onder Khadaffi zo goed als gratis: huisvesting, energie, gezondheidszorg en scholing...... Die scholing was voor jongens en meisjes (in een islamitisch land!) en zij mochten zelfs gratis in het buitenland studeren, waar ook de huur en leefgeld voor studenten door de staat werd betaald....... Nee, echt 'een vreselijke dictator' die Khadaffi......

Khadaffi moest vallen daar hij 'een gevaar was voor de instabiliteit' in Afrika, instabiliteit door het westen gekweekt en in stand gehouden, het is dan ook het westen dat daar altijd de grootste en mooiste vruchten van plukt.....

Bovendien wilde Khadaffi de oliedollar vervangen door de gouden dinar, een geldeenheid die in tegenstelling tot de dollar zou worden gedekt door goud i.p.v. de gebakken lucht die de dollar vertegenwoordigt....... Khadaffi had daar een enorme goudvoorraad voor aangelegd en volgens deskundigen zou het hem gelukt zijn, ware hij niet op een afschuwelijke manier vermoord, met dank aan de VS, de grootste terreurentiteit op onze kleine aarde.....

Libië, het eens rijkste land van Afrika, werd 'ontdaan' van de goudvoorraad (ofwel: deze werd gestolen) tijdens de illegale oorlog van de VS en de rest van de meewerkende NAVO-lidstaten tegen dit land in 2011 en werd het land zo'n 60 jaar in de tijd terug gebombardeerd........

Libië is nu in chaos gedompeld, het is er sinds 2011 oorlog dank zij het westen...... Geen gratis huisvesting, energie en scholing en de gelijkheid tussen man en vrouw is al lang teruggedraaid..... Nu worden er in Libië zelfs openbare slavenmarkten gehouden, in hetzelfde land waar het westen zogenaamd democratie kwam brengen.......

De echte reden om Libië aan te vallen zijn zoals gezegd:

• de pogingen van Khadaffi om Afrika te te organiseren en te pacificeren
• de olie- en gasvoorraden
• de wil van Khadaffi de petrodollar te vervangen >> wat betreft die laatste: 2 vliegen in 1 klap >> een enorme goudvoorraad, die naar grote waarschijnlijkheid onder GB, Frankrijk en de VS is verdeeld.....

Nog even ter inwrijving: de BBC heeft dik meer dan 2 jaar de leugens over het zogenaamde Russiagate als voldongen feit verkondigd en dan durft men bij die zender over fake news (nepnieuws) en manipulatie te ouwehoeren........ Uiteraard geen rectificaties van de BBC voor deze enorme berg leugens en ander fake news, zoals dit evenzo niet gebeurde na de hopen leugens, desinformatie en manipulaties die de reguliere media brachten in aanloop van en tijdens de illegale oorlogen tegen Afghanistan, Irak, Libië en Syrië, of wat dacht je van alle leugens over Oekraïne en De Krim.......

Waar de laatste leugens nooit genoemd worden, zonder de leugen te herhalen dat Rusland De Krim heeft geannexeerd, bewezen een enorme leugen, die echter niet alleen door de BBC, maar de hele westerse reguliere media en bijna voltallige westerse politiek wordt gesteund en met grote graagte wordt herhaald, ondanks dat men op de hoogte is van de werkelijke gang van zaken, die daar haaks opstaat...........

Hoogst frustrerend allemaal, met dergelijke grip van het militair-industrieel complex op de media en de politiek ligt de weg open naar een politiestaat........

Het militair-industrieel complex heeft belang bij zoveel mogelijk oorlog en spanningen. Het leger van de VS en de andere NAVO troepen (onder VS opperbevel) worden geleid door grootlobbyisten van dit complex, zie ook de aanschaf van de meer dan waardeloze JSF, miljarden door het putje...... Trouwens hoe kan je kiezen voor een straalvliegtuig als de JSF (een jager is het niet naar huidige normen), een toestel dat door de VS op afstand aan de grond kan worden gehouden, als men in het Pentagon beslist het niet eens te zijn met de Nederlandse inzet van dit waardeloze oorlogstuig..... Om over alle technisch zwakke zaken maar te zwijgen, bovendien is het ding loodzwaar en maakt dan ook nog eens veel meer herrie dan de al uiterst luidruchtige F16.....

Stephen Colbert probeerde zonder enige humor Tulsi Gabbard in het rechtse kamp te drukken n.a.v. de illegale VS oorlog tegen Syrië

De show van Stephen Colbert is een propaganda orgaan voor de rechtse democraten en is dat in feite al heel lang. Daarmee staat Colbert ook achter de illegale oorlogen die onder de democratische 'vredesduif' Obama werden aangegaan, dit onder regie van zijn rechterhand destijds Hillary Clinton (minister van BuZa), een oorlogsmisdadiger van formaat.....

Colbert had onlangs de democraat Tulsi Gabbard in zijn show en in tegenstelling tot de omgang met andere politici van de Democratische Partij, was dit geen gesprek met opgeklopte 'humor'.

Colbert probeerde Gabbard zelfs in het kamp te duwen van fascist David Duke (voormalig Ku Klux Klan top), en dat van rechtse rotzakken als Steve Bannon en Matt Gaetz......

Wat betreft de illegale oorlogen van de VS, liet Colbert ten overvloede in zijn gesprek met Gabbard blijken dat hij die volledig steunt, ondanks het enorme aantal doden en landen die in puin achterblijven als de VS klaar is met haar grootschalige terreur tegen in feite de bevolking van de landen die het illegaal aanvalt.....

Ook de illegale oorlog van de VS tegen het bewind van Assad kwam ter sprake, waar Gabbard Colbert fijntjes liet weten dat de CIA in 2011 de 'opstand' tegen Assad heeft georganiseerd en geregisseerd en dat de oorlog van de VS in dat land niet gericht was tegen IS, maar tegen het bewind van Assad, waar ze ook de wapenleveringen aan terreurgroepen als IS en militaire training door de VS aan die terreurgroepen noemde..... 

Jammer dat ze Assad wel een dictator noemt, terwijl hij met grote meerderheid democratisch tot president werd verkozen in 2014, een verkiezing die door internationale waarnemers als eerlijk en goed werd beoordeeld...... 

Vergeet voorts niet dat onder Assad alle geloven hand in hand naast elkaar leefden, een zaak die door handelingen van de VS bijna de nek werd omgedraaid.... Gelukkig leven de teruggekeerde vluchtelingen, in de gebieden die door het reguliere Syrische leger worden gecontroleerd, weer vreedzaam naast elkaar, ongeacht het geloof dat men aanhangt......

Helaas voor Colbert, maar hij is geen partij voor Gabbard die hem flink bij de lurven had >> lezen en zien mensen!!

Colbert Smears Tulsi Gabbard To Her Face While Telling Zero Jokes

Hawaii Congresswoman and Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where instead of the light, jokey banter about politics and who she is as a person that Democratic presidential candidates normally encounter on late night comedy programs, the show's host solemnly ran down a list of textbook beltway smears against Gabbard and made her defend them in front of his audience.

Normally when a Democratic Party-aligned politician appears on such a show, you can expect jokes about how stupid Trump is and how badly they're going to beat the Republicans, how they're going to help ordinary Americans, and maybe some friendly back-and-forth about where they grew up or something. Colbert had no time to waste on such things, however, because this was not an interview with a normal Democratic Party-aligned politician: this was a politician who has been loudly and consistently criticizing US foreign policy.

After briefly asking his guest who she is and why she's running for president, Colbert jumped right into it by immediately bringing up Syria and Assad, the primary line of attack employed against Gabbard by establishment propagandists in American mainstream media.

Colbert: Do you think the Iraq war was worth it?

Gabbard: No.

Colbert: Do you think that our involvement in Syria has been worth it?

Gabbard: No.

Colbert: Do you think that ISIS could have been defeated without our involvement and without our support of the local troops there?

Gabbard: There are two things we need to address in Syria. One is a regime change war that was first launched by the United States in 2011, covertly, led by the CIA. That is a regime change war that has continued over the years, that has increased the suffering of the Syrian people, and strengthened groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS, because the CIA was using American taxpayer dollars to provide arms and training and equipment to these terrorist groups to get them to overthrow the government. So that is a regime change war that we should not have been engaging.

Colbert: So, but if it is someone like Bashar al-Assad, who gasses his own people, or who engages in war crimes against his own people, should the United States not be involved?

Gabbard: The United States should not be intervening to overthrow these dictators and these regimes that we don't like, like Assad, like Saddam Hussein, like Gaddafi, and like Kim Jong Un. There are bad people in the world, but history has shown us that every time the United States goes in and topples these dictators we don't like, trying to end up like the world's police, we end up increasing the suffering of the people in these countries. We end up increasing the loss of life, but American lives and the lives of people in these countries. We end up undermining our own security, what to speak of the trillions of dollars of taxpayer money that's spent on these wars that we need to be using right here at home.

Like I said, this is not a normal presidential candidate. How often do you see a guest appear on a network late night talk show and talk about the CIA arming terrorists in Syria and the fact that US military interventionism is completely disastrous? It just doesn't happen. You can understand, then, why empire propagandist Stephen Colbert spent the rest of the interview informing his TV audience that Tulsi Gabbard is dangerous and poisonous.

This was unwatchable. Colbert just went down the list of scripted Gabbard smears (Assad, David Duke) then sermonized about how US military intervention is a force for good in this world. All without telling a single joke. Late night "comedy" shows are propaganda for livestock.

Colbert: You got some heat for meeting with Bashar al-Assad. Do you not consider him a war criminal? Why did you meet with that man?

Gabbard: In the pursuit of peace and security. If we are not willing to meet with adversaries, potential adversaries, in the pursuit of peace and security, the only alternative is more war. That's why I took that meeting with Assad. In pursuit of peace and security. 

Colbert: Do you believe he is a war criminal? Do you believe he gassed his own people or committed atrocities against his own people?

Gabbard: Yes. Reports have shown that that's a fact.

Colbert: So you believe the intelligence agencies on that. Because I head that you did not necessarily believe those reports.

The reason I call Colbert a propagandist and not simply a liberal empire loyalist who happens to have been elevated by billionaire media is because these are carefully constructed narratives that he is reciting, and they weren't constructed by him.

Trying to make it look to the audience as though Gabbard is in some way loyal to Assad has been a high-priority agenda of the mainstream media ever since she announced her presidential candidacy.

We saw it in her recent appearance on The View, where John McCain's sociopathic daughter called her an "Assad apologist" and demanded that Gabbard call Assad an enemy of the United States. We saw it in her recent CNN town hall, where a consultant who worked on Obama's 2008 campaign was presented as an ordinary audience member to help CNN's Dana Bash paint Gabbard's skepticism of intelligence reports about an alleged chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government as something that is weird and suspicious, instead of the only sane position in a post-Iraq invasion world. We saw it in her appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe last month, where the entire panel piled on her in outrage that she wouldn't call Assad an enemy of the United States. It's such a common propaganda talking point that the New York Times' Bari Weiss famously made a laughingstock of herself by repeating it as self-evident truth on The Joe Rogan Experience without having the faintest clue what specific facts it was meant to refer to, just because she'd heard establishment pundits saying it so much.

This is an organized smear by the mass media attempting to marry Gabbard in the eyes of the public to a Middle Eastern leader whom the propagandists have already sold as a child-murdering monster, and Colbert is participating in it here just as much as the serious news media talking heads are. It's been frustrating to watch Gabbard fold to this smear campaign by acting like it's an established fact that Assad "gases his own people" and not the hotly contested empire-serving narrative she knows it is.

Gabbard is being targeted by this smear because she challenges US political orthodoxy on military violence (the glue which holds the empire together), so no amount of capitulation will keep them from trying to prevent the public from trusting her words.

"I don't know whether America should be the policemen of the world," Colbert said after Gabard defended her position.

"It is my opinion that we should not be," Gabbard replied, causing Colbert to launch into a stuffy, embarrassing sermon on the virtues of interventionism and US hegemony that would make Bill Kristol blush.

"If we are not, though, nature abhors a vacuum, and if we are not involved in international conflicts, or trying to quell international conflicts, certainly the Russians and the Chinese will fill that vacuum. And we will step away from the world stage in a significant way that might destabilize the world, because the United States, however flawed, is a force for good in the world in my opinion. Would you agree with that?"

Again, this is a comedy show.

Gabbard explained that in order to be a force for good in the world the United States has to actually do good, which means not raining fire upon every nation it dislikes all the time. Colbert responded by reading off his blue index card to repeat yet another tired anti-Gabbard smear.

"You've gotten some fans in the Trump supporter world: David Duke, Steve Bannon, and, uh, Matt, uh, Gaetz, is that his name? Matt Gaetz? What do you make of how much they like you?"

This one is particularly vile, partly because Gabbard has repeatedly and unequivocally denounced David Duke, who has a long-established and well-known history of injecting himself into the drama of high-profile conversations in order to maintain the illusion of relevance, and partly because it's a completely irrelevant point that is brought up solely for the purpose of marrying Tulsi Gabbard's name to a former Ku Klux Klan leader. Colbert only brought this up (and made Newsweek totally squee) because he wanted to assist in that marrying. The fact that there are distasteful ideologies which also happen to oppose US interventionism for their own reasons does not change the undeniable fact that US military interventionism is consistently disastrous and never helpful and robs the US public of resources that are rightfully theirs.

This interview was easily Colbert's most blatant establishment rim job I've ever seen, surpassing even the time he corrected his own audience when they cheered at James Comey's firing to explain to them that Comey is a good guy now and they're meant to like him. Colbert's show is blatant propaganda for human livestock, and the fact that this is what American "comedy" shows look like now is nauseating.

When Tulsi Gabbard first announced her candidacy I predicted that she'd have the narrative control engineers scrambling all over themselves to kill her message, and it's been even more spectacular than I imagined. I don't agree with everything she says and does, but by damn this woman is shaking up the establishment narrative matrix more than anybody else right now. She's certainly keeping it interesting.

Venezuela: bijt de VS in haar eigen staart?

In het volgende artikel geschreven door Alan Macleod eerder gepubliceerd op Venezuela Analysis (overgenomen van Anti-Media) stelt hij dat de VS zichzelf isoleert met haar agressieve beleid jegens Venezuela. Daar valt wat mij betreft echter nog wel een dikke boom over op te zetten.

Eén ding is wel zeker: 75% van de landen staat niet achter de agressieve VS buitenlandpolitiek t.a.v. Venezuela en blijft Maduro zien als president van Venezuela en hebben kritiek op de VS. Wat nieuw was voor mij is het pleidooi in de VN dat de VS herstelbetalingen moet doen aan Venezuela voor de illegale economische oorlog die de VS voert tegen Venezuela. Waar een bons van de VN volkomen terecht stelt dat de VS met haar sancties tegen Venezuela zelfs misdaden tegen de menselijkheid pleegt en heeft gepleegd......

Jammer dat Macleod niet meldt dat de VS al onder Obama bezig was met een economische oorlog tegen Venezuela, al was dit destijds een stiekeme oorlog, dit daar levensmiddelenketens uit de VS met supermarkten in Venezuela onder druk werden gezet de voorraden voor hun winkels in Venezuela niet of mondjesmaat aan te vullen, ook werden destijds de grote farmaceuten van de VS onder druk gezet zo min mogelijk medicijnen te leveren aan dit land.... (het maakt voor de meeste landen dan 'ook niet' uit wie er president is in de VS, een democraat of een republikein......)

Guaidó, de door de VS naar voren geschoven interim-president voor Venezuela, een fascist waarvan het overgrote deel van de Venezolanen in januari nog nooit had gehoord, heeft de doden die bij de protesten tegen Maduro zijn gevallen, een investering in de toekomst genoemd....... Een onderzoek heeft overigens aangetoond dat 80% van de Venezolanen tegen de sancties is die de VS heeft opgelegd aan Venezuela (sancties, overgenomen door Canada en de EU.....) en tegen militair ingrijpen is......

De Trump administratie heeft verder geen probleem om open en bloot te verklaren dat een verandering van regime in het voordeel is van VS bedrijven.... De psychopathische massamoordenaar Bolton die deze uitlating deed, voegde daar aan toe, dat de Venezolaanse olie een kans is voor de oliemaffia in de VS (waar Bolton uiteraard het woord maffia niet gebruikte)..... Bolton dreigde Maduro bovendien met gevangenisstraf in het VS martelkamp Guantanamo Bay, waar Rubio foto's liet zien van de op gruwelijke manier vermoorde Khadaffi, de voormalig leider van Libië, een land dat de VS en de NAVO naar god hebben geholpen, dit als waarschuwing voor Maduro..... (de NAVO heeft overigens 2 militaire bases in Colombia en dat in de buurt van de Venezolaanse grens.......) 

Onbegrijpelijk overigens dat de reguliere (massa-) media deze uitlating van Bolton niet melden, de uitlating waarmee hij openlijk heeft toegegeven dat de VS de beschikking wil hebben over de Venezolaanse olievoorraad.... Nee deze media blijven de leugen van de VS herhalen dat de VS de arme Venezolanen wil helpen en democratie wil brengen...... Guaidó heeft overigens al gezegd dat hij na een totale machtsovername in Venezuela de VS de beschikking wil geven over de Venezolaanse olievoorraad......

De aanstelling van oorlogsmisdadiger en massamoordenaar Abrams als speciale gezant voor Venezuela, die de VS acties tegen Venezuela moet coördineren, geeft duidelijk aan dat het de VS in het geheel niet te doen is om democratie en mensenrechten in Venezuela, immers Abrams is bekend van eerdere agressieve acties van de VS in Latijns-Amerika, acties waarbij de VS juist de mensenrechten schond en democratische regimes opzij schoof voor door de VS uitgezochte dictaturen, waarbij men massamoorden niet uit de weg ging...... De psychopathische Abrams is zoals gezegd dan ook een massamoordenaar en oorlogsmisdadiger die al lang voor het leven vast had moeten zitten in Scheveningen......

Jammer genoeg heeft de VS haar belangrijkste partners achter zich staan en het is maar zeer de vraag of landen als Brazilië en Colombia een illegale inval van de VS in Venezuela niet zouden steunen, zoals Macleod stelt....... Bovendien zijn er, zoals eerder aangegeven, ook nog eens NAVO troepen gelegerd in Colombia....... 

Ook de reguliere westerse media, verworden tot een machtig westers propaganda wapen, staat volkomen achter een aanpakken van Venezuela, iets dat in een aantal gevallen al is opgelopen tot een pleidooi om Venezuela aan te vallen, precies zoals dit eerder het geval was, voorafgaand aan de illegale oorlog van de VS tegen Irak in 2003........

De laatste daad van Guaidó hoorde ik gistermorgen op BBC World Service: een totale uitval van stroom in Caracas en andere grote steden, werd door deze ploert gebruikt om de voorstanders van Maduro te chanteren, volgens hem zal de stroom vaker uitvallen als vorm van protest, zolang Maduro aan het bewind blijft...... Let wel: eerdere sabotage van het elektriciteitsnet in Caracas leidde tot doden in ziekenhuizen, o.a. patiënten op de operatietafel daar de noodaggregaten niet werkten...... 

Vandaag werd gemeld dat minstens 1 vrouw in een Venezolaans ziekenhuis is overleden door de sabotage van de elektriciteitsvoorziening........ Hoe kan je met goed verstand deze schofterige psychopathische terrorist nog steunen...??!!!

Vergeet voorts niet dat de VN en het Rode Kruis volop humanitaire hulpgoederen verspreiden in Venezuela, deze 2 organisaties hebben de VS zelfs beschuldigd voor het misbruiken van humanitaire hulp als politiek drukmiddel, een zaak die toekomstige humanitaire acties in gevaar brengt..... Het is zelfs zo zot dat deze organisaties verklaarden 20 maal meer humanitaire hulp te verstrekken dan de VS heeft klaar staan aan de andere kant van de Venezolaanse grens in Colombia en naar het schijnt in Brazilië...... 'Fijn ook' dat deze klachten en terechtwijzingen prominent in de reguliere westerse media werden weergegeven.... Niet dus! Deze media en de meeste westerse politici blijven gewoon keihard liegen dat er geen humanitaire hulp wordt verstrekt in Venezuela...... Terwijl USAID (die de VS hulp regelt), in tegenstelling tot de Trump administratie, stelt dat zich tussen die hulpgoederen geen medicijnen bevinden......

(VA Op-ed) — It is no secret that the United States has long been plotting regime change in Venezuela. For over 18 months President Trump has been publicly floating a military invasion of the country. At a speech in Florida President Trump recently announced “the days of socialism and communism are numbered in Venezuela” ominously stating “one day soon we are going to see what the people will do in Caracas.” Vice President Mike Pence declared President Nicolas Maduro a “dictator” and reiterated that self-declared president Juan Guaidó had the “unwavering support” of the American people. In an attempt to destroy the economy and force Maduro out of power, the US has leveled multiple rounds of punishing (and illegal) sanctions on the country, and encouraged and intimidated others to do the same in an effort to isolate Venezuela politically and economically.

The US managed to convince a number of Western European and Latin American states to back their version of events. However, despite the best attempts from an extraordinarily compliant international media to present Venezuela as an isolated nation on the brink of collapse, the US plan is failing badly.

In reality, the international community has rejected the US and its candidate Juan Guaidó, with around 75 percent of countries expressing support for Maduro. Completely unreported in the media was the decision by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to unequivocally condemn the US sanctions, noting that they are targeted at the poorest and most vulnerable Venezuelans. The UN called on all member states to break them and even discussed the reparations the US should pay to Venezuela. The American Special UN Rapporteur Alfred de Zayas described the sanctions as akin to a medieval siege and accused the US of possible crimes against humanity. This startling news has been widely reported internationally but has been virtually completely ignored by the mainstream Western press. The New York Times, CNN, Washington Post nor any other national American publication has reported it.

Trump’s regime change strategy has been nothing short of comically incompetent. Marco Rubio’s constant calls for the Venezuelan military to defect and overthrow Maduro have fallen completely flat as the military has remained steadfastly loyal. The UN and Red Cross refused to participate in the charade of American “humanitarian aid” to Venezuela, noting it did not meet the minimal requirements to be considered aid while Maduro’s government has been only too happy to work with those agencies to receive genuine assistance. The US attempt to force its “aid” through the border and provoke a bloodbath failed, as the supposedly pro-democracy aid workers appear to have set fire to their own aid trucks. Meanwhile, billionaire celebrity Richard Branson’s Venezuela Aid Live concert*, headlined by massive stars like Luis Fonsi and Maluma garnered an attendance of barely a few thousand.

Part of the problem is that the group around Trump lacks the discipline and polish of Obama administration and continue to let the mask slip, making it crystal clear none of this is about democracy and human rights. The appointment of Elliot Abrams, a man infamous in Latin America for his role in regime change and genocide was a clear signal to all what was about to happen. Trump’s special advisor John Bolton said the quiet part loud, letting slip that he saw Venezuela a “big business opportunity” for American companies, noting that “it would make a big difference to the US” if American companies could take over Venezuela’s oil production. Bolton also revealed he was considering sending President Maduro to the Guantanamo Bay torture camp. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio shocked the world by tweeting out pictures of Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi’s mutilated corpse, taken on all sides to be a crude statement of intent for Venezuela.

Another embarrassing incident occurred just after Elliot Abrams, a man known for smuggling weapons to Nicaragua under the guise of aid, was appointed. The McClatchy DC Bureau revealed that an American plane from Miami was caught smuggling weapons and ammunition into Venezuela. The plane had made over 40 round trips that year alone. None of this did anything to convince the international community of the good intentions of the US government.

For his part, Washington’s handpicked president Guaidó has not been able to hide his more bloodthirsty, sociopathic side. The man who over 80 percentof Venezuelans had never heard of in January appalled the country by callously labeling the deaths from the clashes “not as a cost” but an “investment in the future”. The naked brazenness of the coup attempt is a primary reason Guaidó has failed to win over the public. A recent poll showed that over 80 percent of Venezuelans opposed the US sanctions, and even more were against a military intervention.

The international community is increasingly rounding on the US. At the recent UN Security Council hearing on Venezuela, the US was excoriated by South Africa for “trampling upon the law and constitutional rights of Venezuela” and for “taking away the basic right of the people [of Venezuela] to determine their own future”. Bolivia accused the US of breaking the most fundamental laws of non-intervention in other countries and violating Venezuela’s national sovereignty. Russia summed up the mood, describing Guaidó as an “imposter” and that the US was making a “mockery” of the constitutional rights of Venezuela, noting that the US’ humanitarian aid stunt would “in any other part of the world be classed as terrorism.”

Worse still for the US, even the resolve of the Lima Group – and organization of right-wing Latin American countries set up by the Trump administration with the express goal of bringing about regime change in Venezuela – is beginning to crumble. Brazil’s fascist president Jair Bolsonaro, who previously claimed he would do “everything” to get rid of Maduro, has backed away from the US; Brazil declared that under no circumstances would it be any part of an invasion. Other key partners Colombia, Chile and Peru made similar statements. Many of the strongest European critics of Maduro, such as Spain and Germany, have also categorically rejected the military option the US is now preparing for.

This is hardly the first time that the US has isolated itself while trying to isolate Venezuela. As I cataloged in my book Bad News From Venezuela: Twenty Years of Fake News and Misreporting, the US was completely alone in the world casting aspersions on the 2013 election result and calling for a recount. What is remarkable about this time is how badly the hare-brained scheme is backfiring. The Bank of England’s extraordinary decision to freeze over a billion dollars in Venezuelan gold was a clear signal to the world that the UK could not be trusted as a neutral arbiter. Italy has reportedly begun discussions to repatriate their gold in Britain. If an allied state such as Italy has done so, the likes of China, India and Russia must be thinking the same. One of the few industries the UK has left is finance, and this decision could have huge ramifications for Britain’s economy. Furthermore, the government’s acceptance of the Trump regime change plan has sparked a massive uprising across Haiti that threatens to bring down a US-client government.

As a result of the hare-brained incompetence and the naked audacity of the Trump/Abrams/Bolton regime change gambit in Venezuela, the US now finds itself almost completely isolated in the world. This does not necessarily mean the end of the US attack. The US is the world’s only superpower and can act unilaterally whenever it pleases. But the battle for world opinion has been lost. The battle for Venezuela continues.
