Cannabis in 3 extra VS staten gelegaliseerd, ondanks zware antilobby van de farmaceutische maffia en die van de georganiseerde alcoholmisdadigers

Tegelijk met de midterm verkiezingen, werd er in 4 VS staten ook gestemd over de legalisatie van cannabis. In Michigan, Utah en Missouri werd met meerderheid gekozen voor de legalisatie van cannabis. In Michigan gaan de nieuwe regels aangaande cannabis over ongeveer 10 dagen van start. Inwoners van Michigan, mogen vanaf hun 21ste jaar cannabis in bezit hebben, het kopen, gebruiken en het zelfs verbouwen!! (dus geen belachelijk achterdeur beleid!)

Mooie zaak: Michigan laat ook de aanklachten en strafbladen vervallen van gebruikers van softdrugs die geen geweld hebben gebruikt, maar puur en alleen zijn opgepakt voor het bezit van cannabis (voor het overgrote deel gekleurde jongeren.....).

In North Dakota mislukte het en stemde 60% achterlijke hypocrieten tegen, je weet wel van die lui die minstens een paar keer in de week bezopen zijn van de vernietigende harddrug alcohol........

Het blijkt dat er een fikse lobby in de VS bestaat, die cannabis verboden wil houden, 'niet geheel toevallig' de farmaceutische maffia en de georganiseerde alcoholmisdaad, fabrikanten die inderdaad van alles te vrezen hebben van de legalisatie van cannabis, immers cannabis is niet verslavend, het sloopt niet je lichaam en geest, zoals de verslavende harddrugs als zware medicatie en alcohol wel doen (dagelijks 115 doden door verslavende pijnstillers en jaarlijks 88.000 alcoholdoden in de VS..)...... 

Bovendien zijn er intussen een fiks aantal aandoeningen die te behandelen zijn met extracten van marihuana en dat voor ziekten van kanker (niet dat het kanker geneest, maar kan verder wel de boel stopzetten, eetlust opwekken en tot pijn stillen) en staar tot geestelijke aandoeningen......

Uit onderzoek is overigens gebleken dat mensen die geblowd hebben beter autorijden dan mensen die 'clean' zijn....... In Nederland is de politie 'daarom' naarstig bezig blowers op de bon te slingeren, meer dan schandalig, daar cannabis lang in het bloed te zien is...... Er is ook geen flinter aan bewijs dat blowers zoals dronken rijders ongelukken veroorzaken en als dit wel zo is, blijken er altijd andere zaken mee te spelen, zoals het gebruik van psychofarmaca, zware pijnstillers (waarmee je belachelijk genoeg mag autorijden) en/of andere harddrugs.....

Ooit had Nederland een voortrekkersrol op het gebied van softdrugs, waar de miezerige kleingeestelijke hypocrieten van CDA en VVD een eind aan hebben gemaakt, te schandalig voor woorden!! Lui die wel zelf bijna dagelijks alcohol gebruiken.......... Gevolg van de jacht op softdrugs en de meer dan belachelijke wietpas: er zijn nu volop harddrugs op straat te krijgen als speed, chrystal meth, ketamine en andere vernietigende troep....... Terwijl ons eerdere gedoogbeleid ervoor zorgde dat we in vergelijking met het buitenland aanmerkelijk veel minder verslaafden hadden aan harddrugs als heroïne......

Despite Big Pharma’s Heavy Lobbying, Cannabis Legalization Efforts in US Make New Gains

ANSING, MICHIGAN — While Democrats and Republicans went toe-to-toe for control of Congress, voters across three states voted to relax marijuana laws, resulting in a huge victory for the grassroots decriminalization and legalization movement.

With medical marijuana already legal in Michigan for several years, voters passed a ballot proposal on Tuesday to legalize recreational marijuana possession with 55 percent in favor of the measure. The measure made Michigan the first Midwestern state, and the tenth state within the U.S., to legalize recreational cannabis.

Efforts in Michigan paid off thanks to a group called Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like  Alcohol. Although the measure passed by a relatively wide margin, legalization faced stiff opposition from a group known as Healthy and Productive Michigan which seeks to push local municipalities to prohibit sales by focusing on the federal ban on cannabis.

The new laws, which are set to take effect in roughly ten days, allow Michigan residents 21 and over to possess, use, buy, and grow marijuana. The next step in terms of organizational efforts will focus on expunging the criminal records of anyone with non-violent marijuana possession charges. Between 20,000 and 24,550 people are arrested on marijuana-related charges in Michigan each year, with charges disproportionately targeting young black males.

Missouri and surprisingly Utah also passed cannabis-friendly ballot measures on Tuesday.

Missouri residents endorsed Amendment 2, which favors the cultivation of medical marijuana which would result in a 4% tax on all transactions. Unlike Michigan, Missouri faced relatively no opposition.

Key legislators in Utah reportedly planned to pass medical marijuana legislation regardless of Tuesday’s results thanks to overwhelming support from the Mormon church.

Unfortunately, North Dakota’s Measure 3 didn’t win over enough voters to pass, with nearly 60% voting against legalization legislation similar to Michigan’s. Measure 3 also would have expunged the records of citizens charged with non-violent marijuana offenses.

Who’s Behind the Push to Keep Marijuana Illegal?

Many industries have a vast financial interest in keeping marijuana prohibition laws on the books including pharmaceutical giants, alcohol lobbies, casinos, and the prison-industrial complex.

In Arizona, drug manufacturer Insys forked over $500,000 to a group advocating against legalization. Insys had recently gained FDA approval for a synthetic cannabinoid called Dronabinol and grew concerned that legalization efforts would damage its commercial success.

In Massachusetts, pro-legalization efforts face stiff competition from the alcohol lobby, which invested $75,000 to keep cannabis illegal in 2016.

Prison suppliers also worry that legalization could hurt their bottom line. Companies that supply correctional facilities with meals, consumer goods, phone access, clothes, and other items rely on non-violent crimes to keep jails and prisons overcapacity and boost profits.

Proponents of marijuana legalization and decriminalization argue that accessibility could reduce patient reliance on addictive opioids. To put things into perspective, 115 people die each day from opioid overdose.

Meanwhile, 88,000 people die from alcohol-related deaths in the United States each year, making alcohol consumption the third leading preventable cause of death in the country. More than 15 million Americans suffer from alcohol use disorder.

Despite its widespread abuse and danger, alcohol’s legality faces virtually no opposition from lobbying groups in the same way marijuana does. Indeed, profits seem to always outweigh safety and public health.

Op Thanksgiving zo leert men op VS scholen en zelfs aan de universiteit, herdenkt men dat in 1621 de pelgrims (tuig uit Europa) na de oogst samen met de oorspronkelijke bewoners ('indianen') aan tafel zaten. Een oogst die was behaald met de hulp en aanwijzingen van die 'indianen' .

Geen fluit van waar: Thanksgiving was in eerste plaats een feest n.a.v. een zelfs voor die tijd (1637) groot bloedbad dat senator John Withrop had laten aanrichten onder de Pequot stam, waarbij 700 mensen van die stam, inclusief vrouwen en kinderen, werden vermoord........

Nog steeds hebben deze oorspronkelijke stammen geen rechten..... De aan hen, bij verdragen toegewezen gronden worden simpelweg onteigend als men vindt dat daar bijvoorbeeld een oliepijpleiding overheen gelegd moet worden, zoals de Dakota Access Pipiline (DAPL) of de Keystone (en de Keystone XL) pijpleiding, ook al weten de landelijke, regionale en plaatselijke overheden, dat deze pijpleidingen gegarandeerd op meerdere plekken zullen gaan lekken in de toekomst.......

Ach ja, wat verwacht je van 'een land' dat is gebouwd op de grootste genocide uit de geschiedenis, waarbij het overgrote deel van de oorspronkelijke bevolking werd vermoord.......'Een land'  gebouwd op leugens en extreem geweld.........

How to Be Less Ignorant This Thanksgiving

A day seen by many Americans as a day of celebration, a day for family, and a day for giving thanks, is perceived by many Native Americans as a day filled with ignorance, a day filled with anger and a day full of mourning.

(MPN) — While millions of Americans prepare this week to get into the holiday spirit, beginning with Thanksgiving, how many are prepared to view the day through an accurate lens? While to many Americans the holiday serves as a reminder to give thanks, it is seen as a day of mourning by countless others. The truth is: European migrants brutally murdered Native Americans, stole their lands, and continue to do so today.

Start by acknowledging that almost everything taught about Thanksgiving in most schools across the country is a lie. Most Americans remember celebrations in elementary school in honor of Thanksgiving that included activities ranging from coloring pages to parades to plays. Everyone knows the drill: The Pilgrims fled Europe before landing on Plymouth Rock. The resident natives taught them how to farm the land, they all sat down for a big meal in 1621, and everyone lived happily ever after in the United States.

This brief history lesson is often followed by teepees made hastily from paper bags and headdresses for all children in the classroom using brown paper and brightly colored feathers. Some children are assigned the role of Pilgrims while others are told to play Indian for the day. Younger children make turkeys shaped like their hands while high school students are allowed to glimpse a few select representations of the gruesome battles involved in colonization.

Unfortunately, the watered-down, inaccurate teaching of the first Thanksgiving continues into junior high, high school and even into college, with most Americans never actually learning the truth. If non-Native Americans are to learn the truth of the day, it is best to go directly to the source. While there were two parties involved in this supposed great feast, most Americans reference only the story told by the Pilgrims, only the story fed by the colonizers, only the story shaped by textbook manufacturers over the years.

Celebration of a Massacre

It may come as a surprise to some that the first official Thanksgiving Day was held in 1637. Feasts of thankfulness were commonplace in both European and Native American circles long before the first meeting between the Wampanoag tribe, which inhabited southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the Pilgrims when they first landed back in 1621. In 1637, Governor John Winthrop called for an official day of thanks to celebrate the massacre of more than 700 people from the Pequot Tribe, a gruesome and generally unknown start to such a widespread and popular holiday. “This day forth shall be a day of celebration and thanksgiving for subduing the Pequots,” read the proclamation.

If Thanksgiving is to be celebrated accurately, it must be viewed through a Native American lens. The best way to do that is to ask a Native American.

Thoughts and emotions communicated in this video, as well as in conversations with Native Americans, are in stark contrast to the thoughts of gratitude and love conventionally expressed by non-Native Americans when it comes to Thanksgiving. A day seen by many as a day of celebration, a day for family, and a day for giving thanks, is perceived as a day filled with ignorance, a day filled with anger and a day full of mourning. How can these incredibly conflicting views of the same day and the same events possibly exist within the same country?

Colonization Then and Now

Colonization of this continent began long ago and continues to this day, constantly shape-shifting but causing significant harm in all its many guises. From the disappearance of Native women to the fight for clean water, and from the police murder of a Native boy to threats of the sale of Native lands, the Native struggle against colonization is seemingly unrelenting.

This time last year, Native Americans and their allies were brutally attacked by police while defending clean water at Standing Rock in North Dakota. In freezing temperatures, water cannons, along with rubber bullets, were used by militarized police to keep water protectors at bay. Over the course of the entire struggle at Standing Rock, excessive force and violence were used by police and hired security multiple times.

On Thanksgiving Day last year, a protest in the town of Mandan, ND was met with a show of force while water protectors on the front lines at the Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock were attacked by police for crossing the river at the base of Turtle Island. Native Americans and their allies persisted and found reasons to be thankful in the face of oppression.

Recently, a 14-year-old Native American boy, Jason Ike Pero, was killed by an Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputy on the Bad River reservation in northwestern Wisconsin. The Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Ojibwe has requested the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to open a criminal civil rights investigation into the incident. They claim the media and  Wisconsin Department of Justice are trying falsely to “describe Jason as being a troubled young man that acted in a violent manner towards the deputy,” a tactic seen again and again when it comes to police violence against minorities.

Just this week, Nebraska’s Public Utility Commission approved the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline, threatening Indigenous lands, despite a major leak in the Keystone pipeline just days prior. Pipelines and other projects threaten Native lands across the country, with the Trump administration seemingly more focused on profit than on protecting both Native and national lands.

Celebrating Thoughtfully

Once the truth is acknowledged, how do non-Natives move forward? The Thanksgiving tradition is now so deeply rooted in American culture that doing away with the holiday completely is unrealistic, and would further do little to repair the harm that has been done over the years.

Here are some suggestions on how Americans can avoid the traditional whitewash and hypocrisy, and tailor their Thanksgiving celebrations thoughtfully:

• Donate to local Native American organizations or to those fighting to protect their lands.
• Cook traditional Native foods.
• Invite a Native neighbor and listen to what they have to say.
• Teach family, friends, children an accurate history of Thanksgiving and colonization, using these books suggested by American Indians in Children’s Literature.
• Make an informed decision with family and decide together whether celebrating Thanksgiving is appropriate and comfortable.

When it comes to halting and healing from colonization there is much work to be done. Thanksgiving Day and it’s brutal history are an excellent and timely place to begin.

Nebraska Regulators Approve Keystone Pipeline Route Days After South Dakota Leak, Shutdown

TransCanada received its final required pipeline route approval, winning Nebraska’s permission to build its long-delayed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline across the state... just days after a 5,000 barrel spill in South Dakota shut the pipeline.

decision will almost certainly be challenged in court.

Just a few short days after 210,000 gallons of crude oil spilled in South Dakota, Bloomberg reports that Nebraska's Public Service Commission voted three to two Monday, removing one of the last hurdles to the Calgary-based company’s construction of the $8 billion, 1,179-mile conduit (1,897-kilometer), which has been on its drawing boards since 2008.

For those who aren't familiar with the project, the pipeline links Canada’s Alberta oil sands to U.S. refineries.  While a portion of the pipeline has been operating, part of it had still not been approved by state regulators... until today's decision by Nebraska.

However, as Bloomberg notes, the commission approved an alternative route.

Jane Kleeb, president of the environmental advocacy group Bold Alliance, said green-lighting an alternative route may have helped the commission reach a "middle ground solution.”

At the same time it opens new questions that she said her group would explore in federal court. She argued the secondary route wasn’t adequately vetted.

That view mirrored a dissenting opinion filed by Commissioner Crystal Rhoades. She wrote that TransCanada didn’t meet "the burden of proof” in proving that the pipeline is in the state’s public interest, and she said the alternative route needed more study on both the state and federal level. For example, she said, Nebraska’s Department of Environmental Quality didn’t analyze the alternative route at all in its 2013 report.

 "It is clear” TransCanada “never intended it to be considered," Rhoades said.

 In its post-hearing brief, TransCanada told the panel its "preferred route was the product of literally years of study, analysis and refinement by Keystone, federal agencies and Nebraska agencies," and that no alternate route, even one paralleling the Keystone mainline as the approved path does, was truly comparable.

TransCanada's share price is up on the news...

Notably, with Nebraska’s go-ahead in hand, TransCanada still must formally decide whether to proceed with construction on the line, which would send crude from Hardisty, Alberta, through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it will connect to pipelines leading to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The company’s open season for gauging producers’ interest closed late last month, and TransCanada executives have indicated that they’ve secured enough shipping commitments to make the project commercially worthwhile.

ING liegt dat het niet onder contract DAPL uit kan.........

Al eerder besteedde ik op deze plek aandacht aan de investering van ING in de Dakota Acces Pipeline (DAPL). Deze pijplijn gaat dwars door het leefgebied van het Sioux volk en daarme over heilige grond en (onder) water van dit volk.

Eén ding is zeker, als deze pijplijn zal zijn aangelegd, zal deze op een gegeven moment gaan lekken.

Alleen dit jaar zijn er al 8 gevallen te betreuren, waarbij een pijplijn in de VS kapot ging, een lijst van Wikipedia:

• On January 7, a Colonial Pipeline stubline leaked gasoline into Shoal Creek, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.[594]
• On January 14, the Ozark Pipeline, an Enbridge division, spilled about 15,330 gallons of light oil at the Lawrence Pump Station, near Halltown, Missouri.[595]
• On January 16, a gas pipeline exploded and burned, near Spearman, Texas. There were no injuries.[596]
• On January 25, the Magellan pipeline leaked 138,600 gallons (3,300 barrels) of diesel fuel onto private agricultural land in Worth County, Iowa, near Hanlontown.[597]
• On January 30, a Texas Department of Transportation crew dug into the 30 inch Seaway Pipeline, near Blue Ridge, Texas, spraying crude oil across road. There were no injuries.[598][599]
• On January 31, a DCP pipeline exploded under a runway, at Panola County Airport-Sharpe Field in Texas. There were no injuries, but the airport will shut that runway down for an extended amount of time.[600]
• On February 10, a Phillips 66 natural gas liquids pipeline (TENDS pipeline Sorrento system)[601] near the Williams-Discovery natural gas plant on US Route 90 near Paradis, Louisiana exploded while being cleaned, killing one worker, and sending another worker to a burn unit. Traffic on US 90 and La 631 was shut down and residents in the area evacuated.[602][603]
• On February 15, a 36 inch Kinder Morgan gas pipeline exploded and burned in Refugio County, Texas. There were no injuries.[604]

Afgelopen zondag in Vroege Vogels aandacht voor de lamme Greenpeace actie, waarbij een deel van een pijplijn werd aangelegd voor het hoofdkantoor van ING. 

In de uitzending was ING woordvoerder Carolien van der Giessen te horen, die stelde e.e.a. ontzettend vervelend te vinden en te betreuren, maarrrrrr......... De lening van ING (120 miljoen dollar!) voor de DAPL is contractueel vastgelegd, dus daar valt niets aan de doen..........

Ten eerste is het een schande dat ING nog steeds belegt in fossiele brandstoffen, ten tweede is het een leugen dat ING niet onder dat contract uit zou kunnen! Natuurlijk kan dat wel, alleen zal dat ING geld kosten en precies daar wringt de ING oplichtersschoen......

ING liet weten, dat men vooraf aan het verstrekken van de lening onderzoek had laten doen, door een 'onafhankelijk deskundige' en dat men aan de hand daarvan had besloten te investeren....... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Er is geen deskundige nodig om te zien hoe onwaarschijnlijk vaak olie- en gaspijpleidingen kapot gaan (link naar een onafzienbare lijst ongelukken alleen in de VS en alleen voor de 17 jaar van deze eeuw...)... Trouwens waarom sleept ING deze deskundige niet voor de rechter? Waarschijnlijk daar men weet, dat de rechter gehakt zal maken dan dit ING verhaal en de bank zal wijzen op haar eigen verantwoordelijkheid!!!

Greenpeace had beter pijpleidingen kunnen leggen voor de huizen van de ING topgraaiers!!

Nogmaals: een grof schandaal dat we ons IBAN bankrekeningnummer (NB gegeven voor het leven) niet mee mogen nemen naar een andere bank, zodat we bijvoorbeeld de liegende ING schoftentop kunnen straffen voor hun dubbel foute investeringen, door weg te gaan bij die bank!!! Dit heeft u te danken aan de zeer succesvolle lobby van de bankenmaffia bij het waardeloze kabinet Rutte 2 en in de Tweede Kamer.....

ABN Amro maakte gisteren bekend, dat het zich terugtrekt uit het Dakota Acces Pipeline (DAPL) project, dat dwars door heilig gebied van de Sioux dreigt te worden aangelegd. Een goede zet, ook al verliest de bank daar geld mee.

Je zou denken, dat ook ING zich daarna terug zou trekken uit dit walgelijke project, maar nee hoor.......
Had een paar weken geleden al een kladbericht liggen over deze zaak met ING, maar helaas nog niet aan toegekomen.

Destijds zei de topman (weet niet of het dezelfde was als gistermiddag), toen bijna hetzelfde als ING grofgraaier Arnoud Cohen Stuart gistermiddag op BNR (na 16.00 u.), niet anders te kunnen, dan zich juridisch aan het contract te houden......... De woordvoerder een paar weken geleden voegde daar aan toe, dat de kosten van de boete te hoog waren, om zich terug te trekken uit DAPL

Zowaar werd flapdrol Cohen Stuart gistermiddag het vuur aan de schenen gelegd door Petra Grijzen, de presentator. Zij bleef vasthouden aan de vraag waarom ING besloot in dit project stappen. Volgens deze bedrieger had men een onafhankelijk adviseur in de arm genomen, die de zaken zou bekijken op o.a. duurzaamheid en of de aanleg eventueel problemen met bestaande bewoners zou opleveren....... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Duurzaamheid en een olie pijpleiding: een contradictio in terminis.......

Als deze adviseur, die voor meerdere banken optrad, zijn/haar werk niet goed heeft gedaan, zou ik die maar eens gaan vervolgen, kan de schade voor ING nog beperkt worden ook!! Echter gezien het gestumper van deze topman tijdens het gesprek, 'kan je bijna niet anders concluderen', dan dat ING wel degelijk van deze zaak af wist.

Cohen Stuart durfde het niet echt hardop te zeggen, maar als je 'm hoorde draaien, zouden de 'indianen' (het Sioux volk) eerst wel akkoord zijn gegaan met de aanleg van een pijpleiding, die hoe dan ook zal gaan lekken, zoals de praktijk iets te vaak heeft bewezen..........

Er is dan ook maar één reden waarom ING zich niet wil terugtrekken uit het DAPL project: een fikse boete en niet dat e.e.a juridisch niet mogelijk zou zijn...... M.a.w.: om juridisch onder dit contract uit te komen, moet je een boete betalen! Kortom, Cohen Stuart is een enorme leugenaar!!

Overigens is het wel bijzonder vreemd, dat ING en ABN Amro, ondanks dat ze pretenderen alleen nog duurzaam te investeren, zich hebben geleend voor een project, dat het tegenovergestelde is van duurzaamheid: transport van olie (en daarmee investeringen in oliewinning!)....... Smerige bedriegers!!

Vanaf de start van het onzalige DAPL project was bekend dat men geen rekening hield met het Sioux volk!! Om dat te kunnen weten, had men geen adviseur nodig maar een goede internetverbinding!!

Op Radio1 'interviewde' men gistermiddag mensen op straat n.a.v. het steunen van zware misdaad in Mexico door de Rabobank, (daarover later wellicht meer) en of dat een bezwaar was voor hen. Gelukkig zeiden 2 passanten dat ze dit een kwalijke zaak vonden, maar dat overstappen naar een andere bank een heel gedoe is.......

Daar sloegen deze mensen de spijker op de smerige bankenkop: we hebben intussen wel een achterlijk lang bankrekeningnummer, zogenaamd als het burgerservicenummer voor het hele leven, behalve dan als je...... vertrekt bij je bank!! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! De banken spenderen jaarlijks miljoenen aan lobby bij de politiek, zowel in Den Haag als Brussel, als in andere landen waar banken werkzaam zijn en die lobby werkt als een trein, zoals u kon lezen!!

Waarom kunnen we wel ons telefoonnummer meenemen, maar niet ons banknummer?? Dat nummer kan voorlopig toch niet aan een ander worden toegekend. Maar de bankenmaffia stelt doodleuk dat een rekeningnummer meenemen erg ingewikkeld is..... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Ja ingewikkeld hè, als bankrekeninghouders je straffen voor fout investeringsbeleid, door over te stappen naar een andere bank, stelletje oplichters!!

We moeten ons banknummer opeisen, kunnen we eindelijk een banken als ING en Rabobank straffen voor extreem smerige investeringen!!! (maar ook voor 'gewoon smerige' investeringen)

Het is ronduit een schande dat de banken zoveel te zeggen hebben, zeker nadat ze ons in een enorme crisis hebben gestort, een crisis de in feite nog steeds voortwoekert........

January 22, 2017 "Information Clearing House" - "Antimedia"-  Indiana passed a bill on Wednesday that authorizes police officers to shut down highway protesting “by any means necessary.” S.B. 285, as it is known, obliges a public official to dispatch all available officers within 15 minutes of discovering any assembly of 10 or more people who are obstructing vehicle traffic.

The bill then authorizes the responding officers to clear roads “by any means necessary.”

Critics are calling it the “Block Traffic and You Die” bill, an apt name for a bill that has co-opted the phrase “any means necessary,” used famously in speech delivered by Malcolm X during the Civil Rights movement, turning it into a threat against government dissent (with no apparent awareness of the irony).

S.B. 285 is among a collection of increasingly hostile ‘anti-obstruction’ laws that have been quietly submitted in states around the nation over the past few months. A report by The Intercept published Wednesday tracked five such anti-protest laws introduced by Republican lawmakers in different states, four of which are currently pending.

One of the most disturbing among them is House Bill N. 1203, a bill introduced earlier this month by North Dakota lawmaker Keith Kempenich in response to the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests (DAPL). The bill would exempt motorists who hit demonstrators with their cars from any liability in cases where the victims were “obstructing vehicular traffic on a public road, street, or highway.” This twisted take on protest criminalization comes short of condoning manslaughter as a viable means of crowd control.

Also this month, Minnesota State Representative Kathy Lohmer led the effort on submitting H.F. 322, a bill that would re-classify obstructing highway traffic from a misdemeanor to a “gross misdemeanor” and would authorize government units to sue protesters for “public safety response costs related to unlawful assemblies.”

The proposed legislation is strikingly reminiscent of Washington State Senator Eric Ericksen’s proposal to punish protesters as ‘economic terrorists,’ which Anti-Media first reported on in November.

All of the proposed laws share a common trait in that they were all adopted in response to a major protest event in that state. H.F. 322 was submitted shortly after a judge dismissed the riot charges against protesters who took to the St. Paul Interstate last July in a demonstration against the police shooting of Philando Castille. Ericksen’s “economic terrorism” bill announcement came just days after anti-frackingprotesters blocked railroad tracks in Olympia, Washington. DAPL protests inspired both the Indiana and North Dakota bills.

These retroactive responses on behalf of Republican state lawmakers are also seen as preemptive strikes against the threat of increased protests during the Trump presidency.

As ACLU staff attorney Lee Rowland expressed in an interview with The Intercept, these so-called ‘obstruction bills’ are but thinly disguised efforts to squash any government dissent.

“A law that would allow the state to charge a protester $10,000 for stepping in the wrong place, or encourage a driver to get away with manslaughter because the victim was protesting, is about one thing: chilling protest,” Rowland said.

Growing tension between government officials and protesters is expected to come to a culmination on Inauguration Day in D.C., where there will already be many barriers in place to limit demonstrations.

First and foremost is the Federal Grounds and Buildings Improvement Act of 2011, known as H.R 347.

H.R.-347 is a revision of a 1971 federal trespassing law that made it a crime to “willfully and knowingly” remain in an area under Secret Security protection. H.R. 347 removes the word “willingly,” a legal technicality that effectively lowers the bar on the mental state required to be found guilty under the law.

As explained by the American Civil Liberties Union:

“Under the original language of the law, you had to act ‘willfully and knowingly’ when committing the crime. In short, you had to know your conduct was illegal. Under H.R. 347, you will simply need to act ‘knowingly,’ which here would mean that you know you’re in a restricted area, but not necessarily that you’re committing a crime.”

Under current federal law, protesting in proximity to an elected official under the protection of the Secret Service, which includes President Trump, is a crime punishable by fine and up to ten years in jail.

Protesting during Trump’s inauguration comes with additional complications as the National Park Service reserves a large portion of the inaugural parade route along Pennsylvania Ave and in Freedom Plaza for ticket sales under the exclusive discretion of Trump’s Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC). This means the PIC can refuse to allow protesters along the route.

An activist group called Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (Answer) has been engaged in a  legal battle with the National Park Service since 2005, arguing the privatization of the Inauguration is an attempt to “sanitize” the streets of dissent.

While the National Park Service has been controversially setting aside tickets for the PIC since 1980, the issue garnered more attention this year when it was discovered that the sidewalk in front of the Trump International Hotel, a significant site for protesters, would be a part of PIC’s ticket-only area.

Adding another level of bureaucracy, the Washington Post reported the hotel and plaza in front are actually under the control of Trump’s real estate agency, meaning protesters would have to literally ‘ask permission’ to remain in the space.

As the week comes to an end, it becomes apparent that dissent is being criminalized not only nationwide but on multiple fronts. Increased regulations are appearing that limit the public spaces that can be lawfully occupied in protest. Meanwhile, legislation is also being introduced to increase the negative consequences for newly unlawful protests. Should more states follow suit with Indiana, demonstrators will soon find themselves paradoxically protesting for their right to protest at all.
