Shell op duurzame en humanitaire tour: investeringen in VS schaliegas/olie en in 'Israëlisch gas....'

Ongelofelijk maar waar: Shell wil samen met 'het geweldige bedrijf' Blackstone de schalie-olie en -gas winning van BHP Billiton in de VS annexeren. 'Zo laat Shell zien dat het haar ernst is met duurzaamheid en pogingen de klimaatverandering te vertragen.....' De winning van schaliegas en -olie 'is immers de schoonste vorm van winning als het om deze fossiele grondstoffen gaat......'

Het is intussen meer dan duidelijk dat door het fracken voor gas en olie, welhaast onherstelbare schade wordt aangericht aan de ondergrond en dat dit gepaard gaat met enorme vervuiling van zwaar chemisch verontreinigd water, dat in de VS veelal gewoon op het oppervlaktewater mag worden geloosd.........

Shell heeft om het zacht te zeggen ook al geen best verleden als het om mensenrechten gaat, 'vandaar ook' dat dit bedrijf in onderhandelingen is met de fascistische apartheidsstaat Israël...... Dit voor de gaswinning van het omstreden Leviathan-gasveld voor de kust van Israël en de Gazastrook.......

In het bericht dat hierover werd gepubliceerd op de Beurs.nl (het tweede artikel onder dit bericht), spreekt de redactie over het Leviathan-gasveld 'in Israëlische wateren......'

Daarmee stelt Shell in feite dat het akkoord gaat met de claim van Israël op dit gasveld, echter dat is zoals gezegd zeer omstreden en deskundigen zeggen dat het grootste deel eigenlijk ten goede zou moeten komen aan de Gazastrook en Libanon (waar Israël Libanon al heeft gedreigd met militaire actie over de claim).......

Het gaat hier om een contract van 25 miljard dollar en dat voor 25 jaar, daarin is ook gaswinning voor de kust van Cyprus meegenomen, als bij het Leviathan-gasveld is hier strijd om wie de rechten ten goede zou moeten komen, Griekenland of Turkije......

Het gas moet naar een andere groot mensenrechtenschendend land, waar het gas wordt verwerkt in een LNG fabriek, voor transport naar o.a. Europa..... Het land? Egypte!!

Shell is echt lekker bezig en van dat bedrijf is 'ons' koningshuis grootaandeelhouder......

'Shell wil Amerikaanse tak BHP overnemen'

DEN HAAG (AFN) - Shell wil samen met investeerder Blackstone en bod doen op de schalie-activiteiten van mijnbouwer BHP Billiton in de Verenigde Staten. Het olie- en gasbedrijf en de investeerder willen daar 10 miljard dollar, ruim 8,1 miljard euro, voor neertellen. Dat meldt Sky News.

Een bod van Shell en Blackstone zou niet het enige zijn waar BHP op kan rekenen, naar verluidt hebben ook verschillende andere partijen interesse. Namen daarvan werden door Sky echter niet genoemd. Naar verwachting komt een verkoop eind dit jaar rond. BHP gaf eerder wel aan het onderdeel ook naar de beurs te kunnen brengen bij te lage biedingen.

BHP zette zijn Amerikaanse schalietak vorig jaar in de verkoop. Dat deed het bedrijf onder druk van activistische aandeelhouder Elliott Advisors, die vond dat het onderdeel te weinig rendement opleverde.

LONDEN (AFN) - Shell praat over een langjarige deal om gas te kopen uit twee grote gasvelden in het oosten van de Middellandse Zee. Dat meldden ingewijden rond de gesprekken aan persbureau Bloomberg.

Het gaat om het Leviathan-gasveld in Israëlische wateren en het Aphrodite-veld voor de kust van Cyprus. Shell praat over een tienjarig contract ter waarde van 25 miljard dollar met de ontwikkelaars van die velden. Het gas zou moeten gaan naar een LNG-fabriek van Shell in Egypte. De onderhandelingen zouden voor het einde van dit jaar afgerond moeten worden.

Leviathan is in handen de Israëlische bedrijven Delek Group en Ratio Oil Exploration, samen met het Amerikaanse Noble Energy. Noble en Delek bezitten samen met Shell het nabijgelegen Aphrodite-veld.

Fracken verboden in Schotland!!

Ondanks flink wat oppositie heeft de Schotse regering Sturgeon besloten dat er geen schaliegas en oliewinning zal plaatsvinden middels fracken. Vanmiddag maakte de Schotse premier Nicola Sturgeon* in het Schotse parlement bekend dat er geen addertje onder het gras zit en er geen vergunningen afgegeven zullen worden, zelfs niet meer voor proefboringen, fracken is verboden! Dit zwaar tegen de zin van Ineos, die al had geïnvesteerd voor het fracken in Grangemouth.

De Schotse regering heeft het publiek gevraagd zich uit te laten over fracken en een groot aantal mensen heeft laten weten tegen te zijn. Daarnaast bleek uit onderzoek dat de economie er amper of geen baat bij zou hebben, KPMG berekende een winst van 0,1%, bijzonder weinig dus en bovendien is dat cijfer nog  twijfelachtig.

In Schotland is er zelden gebrek aan wind en dat wil de Schotse regering verder uitbouwen, i.p.v. in te zetten op fossiele brandstoffen die het leven op aarde langzaam maar zeker onmogelijk maken. Food and Waterwatch, dat zich van meet af aan heeft verzet tegen fracken, riep de VS en de landelijke regering in Londen op hetzelfde te doen.

Daarover gesproken, gisteren voerde de 'onafhankelijke' regeringsgetrouwe BBC World Service een 'deskundige' op, die verklaarde dat er totaal niets mis is met schaliegas en schalie-oliewinning....... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Nu maar hopen, dat het nu al onzalige Rutte 3 niet toch besluit fracken hier wel toe te staan.........

“We have so much wind and wave power that it is retrograde in the extreme to lend any support to the fracking industry.”

(COMMONDREAMS) — Environmental groups from around the world applauded Scotland on Tuesday for its decision to ban fracking, following an overwhelming public outcry against the practice—and called for the United States and the rest of the United Kingdom to follow suit.

The Scottish government held a public comment period in recent months on fracking, attracting about 65,000 responses—the majority of which came from people in communities where the natural gas extraction would take place. An overwhelming 99 percent of Scots who participated were opposed to the practice.

Another added that the practice was “likely to be entirely detrimental as Scotland’s international reputation as an innovator in design and engineering projects is undermined by our agreement to proceed with fracking…We have so much wind and wave power that it is retrograde in the extreme to lend any support to the fracking industry.”    

Food and Water Watch gave credit to the Scottish people for standing up to corporate entities that supported fracking. “Giant energy company Ineos, which invested heavily in its Scottish facility at Grangemouth, fought hard against this ban, even threatening to explore legal action against the government if it passed,” said executive director Wenonah Hauter in a statement. “But people power prevailed, and it will continue to prevail.  We can’t let companies like ExxonMobil and Ineos stop the inevitable march towards clean energy. Bold and swift policy change is our only hope for addressing our climate goals. We applaud the Scottish government for doing what’s right for people and the planet.

Scotland’s decision leaves its neighbors, England and Wales, alone in their embrace of fracking.

“With all our nearest neighbours having banned or halted fracking, our government is increasingly out on a limb in pursuing it in England,” said Rose Dickinson of Friends of the Earth.

Hauter also called on the U.K. as well as the U.S. to follow in Scotland’s footsteps.

“Banning fracking is a necessary step towards beating the worst effects of climate chaos, and the U.K. and the U.S. should follow Scotland’s example,” she said. “In the U.S., we already have the means to start moving off of fracking swiftly—the Off Fossil Fuels For a Better Future Act, which would mandate a just transition to 100 percent clean renewable energy by 2035, starting with 80 percent within the next 10 years.”

As in Scotland, public opinion in the UK and the US is not in fracking’s favor, despite officials’ insistence that the practice creates jobs and revenue. A poll by England’s Business and Energy Department this summer found that only 16 percent of citizens support fracking, down from 21 percent last year.

In the U.S., opinions are more evenly split, but a 2016 Gallup poll found that 51 percent of Americans oppose fracking, while 36 percent support it.

Londen door beleid May niet veilig voor fracken............

Gisteren berichtte the Canary dat een deel van Londen kans loopt om te worden omgewoeld voor schaliegas winning. Ondanks dat schaliegas gepaard gaat met meerdere boorpunten op een kleine plek, er een enorme hoeveelheid water chemisch wordt verontreinigd bij het fracken, grondwater bewezen wordt verontreinigd, er grote hoeveelheden methaangas (een sterk broeikasgas) vrijkomen en het als in Groningen aardbevingen veroorzaakt, had de regering Cameron en daarmee de huidige regering May geen bezwaar tegen deze vorm van gas- en oliewinning......

Telkens weer wordt gesteld (ook in Nederland) dat schaliegaswinning lucratief is, echter dat is een grove leugen. Als alle kosten meegerekend zouden worden, valt de winst behoorlijk tegen, sterker nog alle kosten in rekening genomen, 'levert' het juist een groot verlies op.... Zo zijn er de kosten voor het schoonmaken van het bij Fracken gebruikte water (in de VS mag dit gewoon geloosd worden in de oceaan), het herstellen van de plekken waar geboord is en het verstevigen van de huizen tegen aardbevingen, zoals in Londen zou moeten gebeuren.........

Bovendien wordt er nooit rekening gehouden met de enorme kosten die de klimaatverandering, mede aangejaagd door gaswinning (zoals gezegd het lekken van methaangas) en het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen, met zich mee zal brengen........ Daarnaast geeft de VS kapitalen aan subsidie voor schaliegas en schalie-oliewinning, iets dat in GB waarschijnlijk ook gebeurt......

One of Theresa May’s government’s most controversial policies could be coming to London. And it’s a move that has already sparked outrage among politicians and residents alike. Because the plan seems, on the face of it, like an absolute catastrophe.

You fracking what?

An energy company has claimed it’s found natural gas deposits worth millions of pounds beneath an industrial estate in North West London. And the company, London Local Energy (LLE), is looking to extract the fuel by fracking the area.

LLE has developed its theory that an area below Artesian Close Industrial Estate in Willesden could hold gas deposits after researching the discovery of oil at Stonebridge Park in 1912. And LLE now wants an exploration licence from the the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) to drill underground. But currently the OGA is not accepting any new bids for exploration licences.

Frack London

This hasn’t stopped LLE theorising over the possibilities of fracking London. Chief Executive Nick Grealy said:

We want to speak to everyone about this, including businesses and residents. If everyone said ‘no, this is not a good idea’ then at least we have tried. But we need to have this conversation. Fracking is not a dirty word. Why does fracking have such a stigma when 90 per cent of people don’t know what it is? The shale revolution in the US is barely 10 years old but now over 70 per cent of US gas comes from shale.

Very fracking concerned

But locals disagree. Business owner Mordechai Chachamu said “I do not see any prospect of this happening. Once people in the neighbourhood hear about it they will be in revolt”. And Brent Labour councillor Zaffar Van Kalwala said he was “very concerned” about the prospect of fracking in Willesden:

…which is one of the most densely populated areas in London. Residents are already having to deal with high levels of air pollution. We should instead be focusing on building for the future and leading the way on renewable energy by providing jobs and opportunities, especially for young people in a cleaner and greener London.

Fracking pros and cons

The idea of fracking taking place in London may be worrying to many people. And campaigners would say that the public should have every right to be concerned. Because fracking has been linked to:

• Contamination of groundwater.
• Methane pollution and its impact on climate change.
• Air pollution impacts.
• Exposure to toxic chemicals.
• Blowouts due to gas explosion.
• Large volume water use in water-deficient regions.
• Fracking-induced earthquakes.

But supporters of fracking say that the process:

• Gives greater access to oil and gas supplies.
• Has direct and indirect economic benefits.
• Gives countries energy independence, making them less reliant on imports.
• Increases employment, and can also decrease air pollution.

No fracking way

As The Canary has been documenting, attempts at fracking in Lancashire have prompted a backlash from locals and campaigners alike. This includes accusations of the police and private security firms using “brutal” and “violent” force to try and stop protests. If this can happen in a small, Lancashire village, then any fracking that is attempted in London will likely be met with a considerably larger opposition. Because, amongst other concerns, the potential risks surrounding water contamination and earthquakes could be huge.

But with the OGA not permitting exploration licences at present, currently LLE’s idea is going to stay just that. And the gas will continue to remain in the ground. For now

Oklahoma door fracken voor olie en gas verworden tot aardbevingsgebied als San Francisco.........

Anti-Media bracht afgelopen dinsdag het bericht, dat Oklahoma door fracken is verworden tot een aardbevingsgevoelig gebied. Eerder had Oklahoma op jaarbasis met maximaal 3 aardbevingen te maken, daar heeft grootschalige olie- en gaswinning middels fracken, voor een negatieve verandering gezorgd. De kans op een aardbeving is in Oklahoma nu net zo groot als in San Francisco, dat in tegenstelling tot Oklahoma op een breuklijn ligt........

Intussen ligt de gas- en oliewinning in Oklahoma bijna op de reet, dit vanwege de lage olieprijzen. Lullig dat de door deze prijs werkloos geworden werknemers, nu te maken hebben met veel meer aardbevingen en dat zal nog jarenlang zo blijven.......

Fracken werd o.a. door Obama en Bush gestimuleerd middels subsidies en 'makkelijke regelgeving' t.a.v. winning in natuurgebieden, vervuiling van de bodem, vervuiling van grondwater en vervuiling van rivieren en oceanen...... Wat betreft die rivieren en oceanen: de oliemaatschappijen mogen het zwaar vervuilde water, dat voor fracken werd gebruikt, 'gewoon' in de rivier dan wel oceaan dumpen......

Na het fracken, waar men op relatief dicht op elkaar gelegen plekken schaliegas en -olie heeft gewonnen, blijft een maanlandschap achter...... In feite is het ontbreken van regelgeving, een vorm van subsidie, immers er hangt wel degelijk een enorme prijskaart aan, neem alleen al de grondwatervervuiling en de aardbevingen door schalie-olie- en schaliegaswinning...... Daar kan men in Groningen over meespreken.......*

Fracking Has Made Oklahoma As Earthquake-Prone As San Francisco

(MINTPRESS) For the last several years, something strange has been going on in Oklahoma. While the occurrence of earthquakes in the state usually hovers between one to three quakes annually, Oklahoma is now averaging one to three significant earthquakes per day.

According to a newly released USGS earthquake risk map, Oklahoma is now just as likely as San Francisco to experience a disruptive, damaging earthquake over the course of the next year. However, unlike San Francisco, Oklahoma’s heightened earthquake risk is not the work of any natural phenomenon, but rather a man-made one.

Unlike most earthquake-prone states in the U.S., Oklahoma isn’t located above an active fault line. Instead, Oklahoma is positioned on top of the Woodford oil and gas shale, which has been a hotspot for oil and gas development over the last decade. The Woodford Shale, which covers nearly the entire state and is known for its geological complexity, was among the first domestic natural gas formations to be tapped using hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” a highly controversial fossil fuel extraction technique proven to cause damage to the environment.

Among the technique’s many negative environmental effects is a rise in seismic activity, as it literally fractures bedrock through injections of pressurized liquid, known as “wastewater.” In addition to the documented toxicity of wastewater, its repeated injection deep into the Earth has been scientifically proven to stimulate major seismic events.

A 2016 study published in Science used Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to show that wastewater injection causes a major buildup of pressure beneath the Earth’s surface by pushing groundwater potentially thousands of feet deeper underground. The study states that as displaced water travels down, it induces seismic activity, resulting in man-made earthquakes. The scientific evidence that fracking increases the incidence of such quakes is so compelling that the connection is even recognized by state and federal officials, despite fossil fuel lobbying efforts.

In Oklahoma, however, these earthquakes have been happening so frequently that they have been described as “swarms.” The dramatic spike in significant earthquakes has unsurprisingly coincided with the expansion of fracking throughout Oklahoma. Ever since Devon Energy drilled the state’s first fracking well in 2005, the number of significant earthquakes – those with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater – began to average two or more daily less than 10 years after the state’s fracking boom began. Earthquakes of that magnitude are easily felt and capable of inflicting damage on structures. While Oklahoma has introduced restrictions on the volume of wastewater injections, it has not been enough to negate the risk or incidence of earthquakes in the state.

Though energy companies like Devon Energy and Newfield Exploration have reaped huge profits by drilling in the Woodford Shale, Oklahoma residents will continue to feel the drilling’s seismic consequences long after extraction stops. As indicated in the 2016 Science study, seismic activity induced by fracking was found to increase even when injection rates at fracking wells declined, as previous injections at higher volumes had already caused the worst of the damage. Even if all fracking wells in the state were shut down tomorrow, fracking-induced earthquakes in Oklahoma would continue.

The economic fallout caused by unstable global oil prices has made the situation in Oklahoma even more complicated. While the price of oil per barrel was close to 100 dollars near the height of the boom, oil prices dropped significantly in 2015, reaching about 37 dollars per barrel in March of that year.

The price drop caused Oklahoma’s fossil fuel-dependent economy to contract by 2.4 percent in 2015, the worst performance nationwide at the time. Thousands of workers in Oklahoma were laid off as a result. Even after fracking becomes unprofitable or unfeasible, Oklahomans will be left with its unsavory environmental and economic impacts for years to come.

Charles Groenhuijsen vindt het dom dat de Obama regering kritiek had op het Israëlische nederzettingenbeleid............

De schaamteloze grofgraaier en blaaskaak de luxe, Groenhuijsen sprak gistermiddag op Radio1 ( rond 12.08 u.). Deze, over een dode hond getilde, verwaande kwast stelde, dat het dom en verkeerd was van Kerry (en daarmee van Obama), om de door Israël voorgenomen uitbreidingen van illegale nederzettingen en (verboden) huizenbouw in Oost-Jeruzalem te veroordelen........

Al moet ik zeggen, dat hij weliswaar als spuit elf, toch met de intussen versleten argumenten kwam, dat Obama en Kerry dat wel eens eerder hadden kunnen doen, i.p.v. vlak voor de machtsoverdracht aan Trump... Waar hij, als was hij de eerste die het te berde bracht, 'geheel interessant' begon uit te leggen, dat Trump de maatregelen die de Obama regering nam, direct zal terugdraaien, als hij 'uitvoerend president is......' Hoewel hij stelde dat sommige zaken niet zo eenvoudig teruggedraaid kunnen worden.

Tja, dat had Trump vorige week uit en te na aangegeven en hij heeft zelfs de corrupte fascist Netanyahu opgeroepen rustig te blijven, tot hij met z'n vieze reet op de presidentiële po-stoel zal zitten (waarna hij Israël door dik en dun zal steunen, zelfs als deze fascistische apartheidsstaat besluit de Palestijnen massaal de grens over te zetten)......

Vooral in deze tijd, zo voegde Groenhuijsen toe, aan zijn 'theorie' dat het verkeerd was van de regering Obama Israël de les te lezen......... Daar dit Trump de kans zou geven, met de vinger naar de democraten te wijzen (die Israël zo lieten vallen, middels de uitspraken van Kerry)....... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Alsof dat belangrijker is, dan eindelijk de Palestijnen te steunen, die in een volkomen ongelijke strijd met Israël, meer en meer het loodje leggen, zowel figuurlijk als letterlijk........

Voorts prees Groenhuijsen het milieubeleid van Obama........ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Obama is verantwoordelijk voor de enorme vervuiling, die met schalie-olie en schaliegaswinning gepaard gaat...... Het gaat hier om zowel bodemvervuiling, grondwatervervuiling, als een enorme vervuiling, met honderden miljoenen liters zwaar vervuild water, van rivieren en de oceaan...... Vervuild water dat met het fracken voor deze winningen wordt geproduceerd...... Daarbij heeft de Obama regering deze winningen gesubsidieerd......

Ook heeft de VS massaal kolen op de wereldmarkt gedumpt, zodat zelfs in Nederland de kolencentrales op volle toeren draaien en gascentrales werden uitgeschakeld. Uiteraard heeft dit ervoor gezorgd, dat men in ontwikkelingslanden massaal kolencentrales heeft gebouwd en bouwt....... De VS heeft zelfs een gigantische kolencentrale in Bangladesh gesubsidieerd, een centrale die in het belangrijke natuurgebied Sundarbans wordt gebouwd......

Daarnaast gaf Obama Shell toestemming om in het Arctisch zeegebied te boren naar olie en gas. Nu wordt dezelfde Obama geprezen, daar hij vorige maand een ban op het boren in Arctisch gebied heeft uitgevaardigd, terwijl Shell zelf is gespot met boren, daar het veel te duur en gevaarlijk is.........

Nee, echt groen, die Obama........

Groenhuijsen: "Weg van de hoop en zo weg van de verandering, die Obama met zoveel succes leek teweeg te brengen...." ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Welke verandering en hoop? 'Vredesduif' Obama begon twee illegale oorlogen en is de eerste VS president die de volle twee termijnen in oorlogen verwikkeld was....... Hoop voor de gekleurde bevolking? Hoeveel gekleurden werden door de VS politie doodgeschoten tijdens het bewind van Obama........ In verhouding met witten, zitten er ongelofelijk veel meer gekleurden gevangen in de VS.........

Na zijn hiervoor genoemde citaat, zei Groenhuijsen met verbazing, dat hij somber eindigde, terwijl hij toch altijd zo vrolijk is......... Blijkbaar is het Radio1 grofgraaituig te verstaan gegeven dat er nog meer gelachen moet worden op Radio1, desnoods tijdens een bericht over een aanslag........

Obama 'redt milieu-erfenis' met ban op boren in Arctisch gebied....... AUW!!!!

Gisteren in het BBC World Service radionieuws van 1.00 u. en daarna in Newsroom het bericht dat paus Obama zijn ban had uitgesproken over boren in het Arctisch gebied...... Volgens 'een deskundige' doet Obama dit om z'n erfenis op milieugebied veilig te stellen........ ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Dus nog geen maand, voordat hij het Witte Huis verlaat, verklaart Obama boren in Arctisch gebied taboe...... Echt héééééél betrouwbaar, zeker als je nagaat dat hij Shell eerder wel toestemming gaf daar te boren, waarbij de eerste poging al bijna voor een olieramp zorgde.......

Shell is zelf gestopt met het boren in Arctisch gebied, daar dit veel te duur was (zonder gegarandeerde subsidie)........

Nog 'een mooi deel' van Obama's erfenis: het toestaan van fracken t.b.v. schalie-olie en -gaswinning. Miljarden liters zwaar vervuild water zijn intussen weggevloeid in rivieren en de Stille Oceaan, zonder dat daar zelfs maar voor betaald behoefde te worden (ook al een vorm van subsidie....)..... Miljarden liters grondwater zijn intussen vervuild door het Fracken en grote gebieden zijn in feite onbewoonbaar geworden door het fracken, dat bovendien een desolaat landschap met een berg 'kraters' achterlaat..........

Het volgende deel van de erfenis zit bijna in het verlengde van het vorige: de Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), dwars door heilig gebied voor het oorspronkelijke volk van dat gebied, de Sioux........ Hele veldslagen hebben er intussen plaatsgevonden, nadat de politie, andere ordetroepen en rednecks keihard tekeer gingen tegen vreedzame demonstranten........

Onder Obama is de aanleg begonnen van de grootste kolenterminal van de VS, de Millenium Bulk Terminal, waardoor de Columbia rivier zwaar vervuild zal raken...... Bovendien verkoopt de VS kolen aan ontwikkelingslanden, zoals Bangladesh en wel zo goedkoop, dat men daar niet eens meer wil nadenken over duurzame energie.......... De VS financiert daar een grote kolencentrale in natuurgebied, de Sundarbarns en alweer.... onder Obama!!



Of wat dacht u over het toestaan van gentech, waardoor deze planten bestand zijn tegen grote hoeveelheden van bijvoorbeeld neonicotinoïden (vergif)....... Zo kunnen nu enorme hoeveelheden Roundup en andere zware vergiften op grote schaal gebruikt worden, vergiften waarvan een groot deel in de bodem, het oppervlakte- en grondwater verdwijnt ..........

Tot slot: hoe vervuilend schat u oorlogsvoering in??? Oorlog brengt een enorme berg lucht-, water- en bodemvervuiling met zich mee, om over de enorme vervuiling door bombardementen maar te zwijgen...... Obama staat op eenzame hoogte wat betreft oorlogvoeren, vergeleken met alle voorgaande presidenten, hij was (en is nog even) de eerste president die de volle twee termijnen van zijn presidentschap oorlog voerde.......

Vlak voor de feestdagen komt president Obama met een cadeau waar de Kerstman een puntje aan kan zuigen. Samen met de Canadese premier Trudeau heeft hij grote delen van de Noordpool permanent beschermd verklaard. Oliebedrijven als Shell moeten wegblijven en inheemse volkeren kunnen rustiger ademhalen. Zonder jou was dit niet mogelijk geweest! Wij schreeuwen dit fantastische nieuws graag van de daken! Zo ook op Facebook. Bekijk en deel de post als je net zo blij bent als wij.

Zege voor het klimaat
Al jaren azen Shell & co op de olie- en gasvoorraden onder het poolijs. Vorig jaar nog wisten we, samen met miljoenen mensen, Shell uit het Noordpoolgebied te verjagen. Dat Obama en Trudeau nu permanent de deur dichtdoen, is niet alleen een zege voor de natuur en de bewoners van het gebied, maar ook voor het klimaat. Om de klimaatcrisis te bestrijden, mógen we helemaal geen nieuwe fossiele bronnen aanboren. 

We zijn er nog niet
Hoewel grote delen van de Noordpool nu zijn beschermd, staat oliebedrijf Statoil in de startblokken om te boren in het Noorse deel van het Noordpoolgebied. Greenpeace heeft onlangs een rechtszaak aangespannen tegen de Noorse staat om dit te voorkomen. Dit nieuws uit Noord-Amerika geeft goede moed! Deel dit succes en laat dit een goed voorbeeld zijn voor de Noorse staat.

A 21-year-old woman was severely injured and may lose her arm after being hit by a projectile when North Dakota law enforcement officers turned a water cannon on Dakota Access pipeline protesters and threw “less-than-lethal” weapons, according to the woman’s father.

Sophia Wilansky was one of several hundred protesters injured during the standoff with police on Sunday on a bridge near the site where the pipeline is planned to cross under the Missouri river.

Graphic photographs of her injured arm with broken bones visible were circulated on social media.

“The best-case scenario is no pain and 10-20% functionality,” said Wayne Wilansky, Sophia’s father, who travelled to Minneapolis where his daughter underwent eight hours of surgery on Monday. He said his daughter had been hit by a concussion grenade thrown by a police officer and that the arteries, median nerve, muscle and bone in her left arm had been “blown away”. 

Sophia will require additional surgery in the next few days and her arm may still have to be amputated, he added. “She’s devastated. She looks at her arm and she cries,” he said.

Sophia Wilansky is one of thousands of activists who have travelled to the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota to attempt to halt the construction of the pipeline. Members of the

Standing Rock Sioux tribe established a “spiritual camp” on the banks of the Missouri in April. The tribe fears the pipeline will jeopardise their water supply and say that construction has disturbed sacred burial grounds.

Police blast Standing Rock protesters with water cannon and rubber bullets

The activists, who call themselves “water protectors”, have faced a heavily militarised police force. More than 400 protesters have been arrested by law enforcement officers who have deployed pepper spray, teargas, rubber bullets, Tasers, sound weapons and other “less-than-lethal” methods.

Following Sunday’s confrontation 26 protesters were taken to hospital and more than 300 injured, according to the Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council. Most of the injured had hypothermia after being hit by a water cannon in below-freezing weather.

The Morton County sheriff’s department did not immediately respond to inquiries from the Guardian. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, a spokeswoman for the department denied the agency had deployed concussion grenades and suggested the injury may have occurred while protesters were “rigging up their own explosives”.

The Standing Rock Medic & Healer Council refuted law enforcement’s claims in a statement, citing eye-witness accounts of seeing police throw concussion grenades, “the lack of charring of flesh at the wound site” and “grenade pieces that have been removed from her arm in surgery and will be saved for legal proceedings”.

The incident on Sunday began when about 100 activists attempted to remove two burned trucks from the bridge just north of the main encampment. The bridge has been barricaded for several weeks, blocking the most direct route to Bismarck, North Dakota, and raising safety concerns among residents of the camp and the reservation.

The barricade may have exacerbated Wilansky’s injury, her father said, by delaying her arrival at a hospital in Bismarck. She was subsequently airlifted to another hospital in Minneapolis.

Wilansky has received a massive outpouring of support online. A crowdfunding campaign established to help pay her medical bills raised more than $120,000 (£96,000) from more than 4,000 donors in the first seven hours. 

Friends of Wilansky are planning a prayer vigil in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
