Two weeks ago, the National Basketball Association (NBA) launched the Basketball Africa League in Kigali, Rwanda. The reason they picked Rwanda was because they claim it has the infrastructure they need for such an organization. While it is true, the streets are clean and the nation is no longer in the throes of a genocide, these truths underscore a darker reality. The people of Rwanda are not free. It is illegal to criticize the government and the punishment is up to five years in prison. President Paul Kagame's critics are forcibly disappeared or killed. This is not the place for the NBA to plant its flag.
Please sign our petition urging the NBA to take a stand for human rights in Rwanda.
In August 2020, Kagame kidnapped humanitarian and hero, Paul Rusesabagina. The charges are a mishmash of allegations that have been brought up before and deemed uncredible by the American and Belgian governments. Rusesabagina's real crime is speaking out against Kagame and his brutal regime. Since August, Rusesabagina has been tortured, held in solitary confinement, and denied access to his medication, legal team, and family.
In the United States, NBA players and teams have placed themselves at the forefront of the civil rights movement that is #BlackLivesMatter (BLM). If the NBA wants to promote irself as a supporter of human rights they need to demand Kagame release Rusesabagina immediately in accordance with Rwandan and international law.
Please sign our petition to press the NBA to help free Paul Rusesabagina.
