Ron Paul: trek VS troepen terug uit Irak, minstens 1 miljoen Irakezen eisen dat

Vorige week vrijdag trokken zo'n 1 miljoen Irakezen in protest de straat op en eisten daar het vertrek van VS troepen (uit hun land). Dit nadat het parlement en de zittende regering de VS al had gevraagd te vertrekken, waarbij leiders van de demonstratie de VS en andere westerse landen waaronder Nederland) waarschuwden voor de consequenties als ze niet zouden vertrekken, hetzelfde werd herhaald door de Iraakse premier Adil Abdul-Mahdi echter Pompeo, de minister van BuZa in de VS, lachte de Iraakse premier uit in het gezicht.......

Volgens de psychopathische massamoordenaar Pompeo is de VS in Irak om IS (= ISIS) te verslaan en weigert botweg te vertrekken, ofwel schijt aan de democratie die de VS zo vaak vals predikt als het weer op illegaal oorlogspad is....... Irak is dus geen soeverein land meer, immers gezien ook deze zaak, maakt de VS de de dienst uit in dat land.......

Het is wel overduidelijk dat de VS nog steeds het plan heeft om het bewind van de Iraanse president Rohani omver te werpen, vandaar ook dat de VS sinds vorig jaar lente maar liefst 20.000 militairen extra heeft gezonden naar het Midden-Oosten,  (vanwege die oorlogsplannen is het van belang dat er een aanzienlijke VS legermacht achterblijft in Iran en Syrië...)..... Een uiterst smerige politiek daar Rohani tot de gematigde krachten behoort in Iran, met het steeds verder onder druk zetten van Iran door de VS, krijgen de islamitische leiders in dat land steeds meer macht..... Het was dan ook in het geheel niet in het belang van de Trump administratie dat gematigde krachten aan het bewind kwamen in dit sjiitische land..... De oorlogstrom moet blijven klinken, zoals de kassa's van de wapenindustrie, privé huurlegers en die van de geheime diensten moeten blijven 'rinkelen.........'

Totaal belachelijk dat de reguliere westerse media zo weinig aandacht aan deze zaak schenken, terwijl men daar intussen een groot deel van de versufte aandacht gebruikt voor het impeachment proces in de VS dat tot niets zal leiden, immers de Republikeinen hebben de meerderheid in de senaat, die gaan echt niet voor het vertrek van Trump stemmen, al helemaal niet in een verkiezingsjaar!!!

In feite heeft de VS het Iraakse parlement buiten spel gezet en de rest van het westen vindt het wel best.... (ook Nederland trekt haar troepen niet terug uit Irak en steekt haar neus verder in het wespennest door een fregat naar de Straat van Hormuz te sturen, zogenaamd een Frans initiatief, maar reken gerust als er stront aan de knikker komt, Nederland meedoet aan de zoveelste illegale oorlog van de VS.......

Ron Paul stelt volkomen terecht in zijn schrijven dat je hieronder vindt en dat werd gepubliceerd op Money and Markets, dat er geluisterd moet worden naar een miljoen demonstranten en dat de troepen naar huis moeten. Voorts wijst hij op het feit dat een VS generaal heeft gesteld dat momenteel de sjiitische milities gevaarlijker zijn voor de VS dan IS..... Daar zou ik aan toe willen voegen dat de VS in het verleden IS meerdere keren heeft geholpen aan wapens, munitie (inclusief 'schouderraketten') en rollend oorlogstuig.......

2020, hoe is het in godsnaam allemaal mogelik, terwijl ook 'ons' kabinet weet hoe de VS keer op keer de boel belazert, alleen om maar oorlog te kunnen blijven voeren??!!! (ach ja, ook Rutte 3 zit vol met lobbyisten voor: -het militair-industrieel complex, -de VS buitenlandpoltiek (terreur), -de NAVO (terreur) en -de oliemaatschappijen (ook die hebben belang bij oorlogsvoering, immers daarmee worden de prijzen opgedreven.....)....

Ron Paul: Bring Home the Troops — a Million Iraqis Asked Us to Leave. We Should Listen

You wouldn’t know it from U.S. mainstream media reporting, but on Friday an estimated million Iraqis took to the streets to protest the continued U.S. military presence in their country. What little mainstream media coverage the protest received all reported the number of protesters as far less than actually turned out. The Beltway elites are determined that Americans not know or understand just how much our presence in Iraq is not wanted.

The protesters were largely supporters of nationalist Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who opposes both U.S. and Iranian presence in Iraq. Protesters held signs demanding that the U.S. military leave Iraq and protest leaders warned of consequences unless the U.S. listen to the Iraqi people.

After President (Donald) Trump’s illegal and foolish assassination of Iranian general Soleimani on Iraqi soil early this month, the Iraqi parliament voted unanimously to cancel the agreement under which the U.S. military remains in Iraq. But when the Iraqi prime minister called up Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to request a timetable for a U.S. withdrawal, Pompeo laughed in his face.

The U.S. government answered the Iraqi parliament’s vote with a statement that the U.S. military is a “force for good” in the Middle East and that because of the continuing fight against ISIS U.S. troops will remain, even where they are not wanted.

How many billions of dollars have we sent to Iraq to help them build their democracy? Yet as soon as a decision of Iraq’s elected parliament goes against Washington’s wishes, the U.S. government is no longer so interested in democracy. Do they think the Iraqis don’t notice this double-dealing?

The pressure for the U.S. to leave Iraq has been building within the country, but the U.S. government and mainstream media is completely — and dangerously — ignoring this sentiment. It’s one thing to push the neocon propaganda that Iraqis and Iranians would be celebrating in the streets after last month’s U.S. assassination of Iranian general Soleimani, who was the chief strategist for the anti-ISIS operation over the past five years. It’s a completely different thing to believe the propaganda, especially as more than a million Iranians mourned the popular military leader.

The Friday protesters demanded that all U.S. bases in Iraq be closed, all security agreements with the U.S. and with U.S. security companies be ended, and a schedule for the exit of all U.S. forces be announced. Sadr announced that the resistance to the U.S. troop presence in Iraq will halt temporarily if an orderly departure is announced and implemented. Otherwise, he said, the resistance to U.S. troops would be activated.

A million Iraqi protesters chanted “no, no to occupation.” The Iraqi parliament voted for us to leave. The Iraqi prime minister asked us to leave. Maj. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, the U.S. deputy commander in Iraq and Syria, said last week that US.. troops in Iraq are more threatened by Shi’ite militias than ISIS.

So, before more U.S. troops die for nothing in Iraq, why don’t we listen to the Iraqi people and just come home? Let the people of the Middle East solve their own problems and let’s solve our problems at home.

Dat de VS Qassem Soleimani heeft vermoord is voor niemand een geheim, echter uit nieuwe informatie blijkt dat de VS (CIA) verantwoordelijk is voor de organisatie van de protesten en rellen die eind 2019 plaatsvonden in Irak...... De VS is tevens verantwoordelijk voor de moord op de meer dan 300 demonstranten tijdens die protesten en rellen, waarmee wordt bedoelt dat de VS direct verantwoordelijk is voor die moorden (ofwel: die moorden werden niet gepleegd door de Iraakse overheid als gevolg van ingrijpen tegen die door de VS georganiseerde protesten en rellen, maar de VS is daadwerkelijk direct verantwoordelijk voor het vermoorden van 300 Iraakse demonstranten...).....

Het voorgaande, dus de moord op demonstranten, is een zaak die de VS ook al vaker heeft gebruikt, neem het Egyptische Caïro in 2009, Libië in 2011 en Oekraïne in 2014 (op het Maidanplein)...... In 2 gevallen had deze terreurtactiek succes en moest het bewind aftreden ten gunste van een regering die de VS welgevallig was..... Over Libië moet gezegd worden dat er grote NAVO bombardementen plaatsvonden en dat meerdere terreurgroepen (waaronder ISIS) werden geholpen door de NAVO, tijdens die ongebreidelde terreur werd Khadaffi de president op een walgelijke manier vermoord en werd het land van het rijkste op het Afrikaanse continent bijna het armste, volledig leegestolen door de VS, Groot Brittannië en Frankrijk...... In het geval van Caïro had het westen, met de VS voorop, niet verwacht dat de Moslim Broederschap aan het bewind zou komen middels verkiezingen, wat tot een coup van het leger leidde, gegarandeerd met hulp van de CIA..... (terwijl de VS eerder zogenaamd blij was met het afzetten van dictator Moebarak en dat de democratie had gezegevierd in Egypte....)   

De moord op Soleimani was niet slechts een domme zet van Trump en een paar van zijn haviken, zoals velen concludeerden, maar diende wel degelijk een ander doel, aldus Gordon Duff, die het hieronder opgenomen artikel schreef dat werd gepubliceerd op Information ClearingHouse. Voorts stelt Duff, een Vietnamveteraan, dat het bezetten door de VS van opium en olierijke landen niet alleen het eerste belang is van de VS..... (hoewel uiteraard zeker belangrijk)

De moord op Soleimani heeft val alles te maken met de eerder aangehaalde protesten en rellen in Irak, die de Iraakse premier (Abdul-) Mahdi eind november 2019 tot aftreden deed besluiten.... Mahdi was een jaar aan het bewind en hij ging de 'endemische' corruptie te lijf, corruptie die elk land treft waar de VS haar bloedige poten heeft neergezet....... Voor de illegale inval en oorlog van de VS tegen Irak was de soennitische minderheid aan het bewind, na de inval van de VS namen de sjiieten langzaam maar zeker het bestuur van Irak over. Om de sjiieten van Irak te helpen in de strijd tegen de soennieten, die uiteraard de macht wilden behouden, vertrok Soleimani in 2003 naar Irak om daar sjiitische milities te organiseren tot wat de Popular Mobilization Forces (PMU) ging heten en nu onderdeel is van het Iraakse leger, deze milities vochten naast het VS leger.......

Kortom Trump en zijn haviken Pompeo en Esper stelden dat Soleimani destijds VS burgers en militairen vermoordde, terwijl hij in werkelijkheid zij aan zij vocht met de VS...... Pas toen het in 2007 duidelijk werd dat de VS oorlog zocht met Iran veranderde de relatie van Soleimani met de VS, iets waar Duff niet verder op ingaat in zijn artikel.

Mahdi wilde en wil af van de VS troepen in zijn land en daarmee met de corruptie, daar de VS hulp aan Irak voor een deel in de zakken van politieke baasjes verdween...... De VS deed vrijwel niets tegen ISIS (IS), dat is ook de mening van veel Irakezen, die stellen dat de VS terreurgroep IS naar Irak heeft gebracht, puur en alleen om de macht van de sjiieten in dat land te breken (niet alleen vervoerden de VS en Saoedi-Arabië IS leden door het Midden-Oosten, maar ze leverden hen ook wapens, munitie en rollend oorlogstuig, zoveel is zeker...) Mahdi wilde daarom bepaald niet in de laatste plaats van de VS troepen af, of vanwege de door de VS in stand gehouden corruptie, maar ook daar de VS van Irak eiste dat het voor de wederopbouw van het land 50% van de opbrengsten kreeg.... (een wederopbouw waar veel grote VS bedrijven lucratieve deals kregen toegewezen door de eerder aangeduide corrupte baasjes...) Volgens mij is Duff een paar zinnen vergeten want even later stelt hij dat Mahdi daarom een deal met China heeft gesloten, een deal die wel lucratief was voor Irak....

Na het lucratieve bezoek van Mahdi aan China, braken er rellen uit in Irak en het is zeker dat de VS daar achter zat, sterker nog: Trump heeft Mahdi openlijk gedreigd met grote demonstraties in zijn land als het akkoord voor o.a. wederopbouw met China niet zou worden verscheurd.... Echter Mahdi bond niet in en inderdaad in Irak vonden grote demonstraties plaats, waarop Trump weer contact opnam met Mahdi en nu dreigde scherpschutters in te zetten die dood en verderf zouden zaaien onder de demonstranten en onder de politie, zodat de demonstranten nog harder tekeer zouden gaan tegen Mahdi en zijn regering, daarop trad Mahdi af (echter is nog steeds premier tot er een opvolger is gevonden of gekozen)..... 

De Iraakse minister van defensie gaf in het openbaar terecht 'een derde partij' de schuld voor de 300 doden die tijdens de protesten en rellen zijn gevallen, waarop Trump weer contact opnam met Mahdi en deze te verstaan gaf, dat zowel hijzelf als de minister van defensie niet langer over een derde partij mochten spreken (voor iedereen was het duidelijk dat het om de VS moest gaan), daar ze anders vermoord zouden worden....

Op de dag dat Soleimani werd vermoord zou hij een afspraak hebben gehad met Mahdi en waar hij een Iraans antwoord zou geven op de vraag van Saoedi-Arabië de boel niet te laten escaleren in het Midden-Oosten, daar men niet nog een oorlog wenste in het al verscheurde Midden-Oosten (waarbij Saoedi-Arabië NB zelf verantwoordelijk is voor de genocide die in Jemen wordt uitgevoerd en tevens verantwoordelijk was en is voor de strijd van een aantal terreurgroepen in Irak, waaronder IS.....).... Mahdi zou dat antwoord doorgeven aan S-A.....

Saoedi-Arabië zat ook in de maag met de moord op Soleimani door de VS en was van tevoren niet gewaarschuwd dat deze (terreur-) aanslag zou plaatsvinden, niet vreemd dus dat S-A een delegatie naar Washington stuurde om de Trump administratie te manen vooral geen oorlog tegen Iran te beginnen.......

New Facts Change Everything, the Sickening Truth About Why Iran “Schooled” America

January 14, 2020 "Information Clearing House" -   Information has come to light that indicts the United States not just for the Soleimani killing but also for the over 300 killings during the Iraqi protests in late 2019.

In fact, it can be proven that the United States not only organized the protests but also is 

responsible for killing protestors as well, hundreds of them, something we have seen before, Maidan in 2014, Libya in 2011 and Cairo in 2009.

In each event, the killings of protestors lead to regime change favorable to the US. Though evidence of false flag snipers in Maidan is overwhelming, this is the first real “smoking gun” that clearly establishes the US military as a terrorist organization.

We begin our story.

The Soleimani murder, at the hands of Pompeo, Esper and Trump, was much more than the simple hubris and ignorance most assume.

It is also assumed, quite wrongly, that the US occupation of the oil and opium rich lands of Asia is driven by national interest, at least to a part, perhaps even a small part. That is false also, patently false.

The backstory behind the killing of Soleimani is rooted in the explosive riots and the mysterious murders that pushed Iraqi Prime Minister Mahdi to resign on November 30, 2019.

Mahdi had been in office a year and had been, for the first time, addressing Iraq’s massive corruption, an endemic problem with any nation that has the misfortune of being occupied by the United States.

Iraq has a Shiite majority that has slowly assumed political dominance after years of suppression under Saddam Hussein.

In fact, it was Iranian General Soleimani who came to Iraq in 2003 to organize the Shiite militias, the current PMU, now part of Iraq’s Army, to fight alongside American forces that were overthrowing Sunni Baathist rule.

Trump claims he had Suleimani murdered for his part in the killing of Americans during this period, when in fact Suleimani was closely allied to the US, at least until the US decided to begin a war with Iran in 2007. However, this is another story for another time, one also wrought with deception and double-dealing.

Critical to understanding events is understanding America’s real role in Iraq. To do that, it is necessary to understand why Iraq’s parliament voted unanimously to oust American troops.

The story behind this is much more than the death of Suleimani, far more, and has been suppressed. That story involves a broader geopolitical narrative that transpired when Iraq under Mahdi tried to remove America’s heel from its neck.

Italian journalist Federico Pieraccini investigated the story behind Mahdi’s address to parliament, the recorded portion of which in no way answered any real questions about why Iraq would make such a drastic move as to expel American troops, ending the billion dollar a year payoff scheme that fed so many Sunni politicians.

Pieraccini tells us this:

“[Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq] Halbousi attended the parliamentary session while almost none of the Sunni members did. This was because the Americans had learned that Abdul-Mehdi was planning to reveal sensitive secrets in the session and sent Halbousi to prevent this.

Halbousi cut Abdul-Mehdi off at the commencement of his speech and then asked for the live airing of the session to be stopped. After this, Halbousi together with other members, sat next to Abdul-Mehdi, speaking openly with him but without it being recorded. This is what was discussed in that session that was not broadcast: 

Abdul-Mehdi spoke angrily about how the Americans had ruined the country and now refused to complete infrastructure and electricity grid projects unless they were promised 50% of oil revenues, which Abdul-Mehdi refused.”

That deal with China was the result of Mahdi’s abandoning any attempt to work with the United States after years of seeing his nation bled dry.

It is no secret that the United States had little or no role in fighting ISIS and, were one to ask the Shia majority of Iraqi citizens, most would insist that the US brought ISIS to Iraq with Saudi help.

In meetings with Sunni leaders, held in Baghdad in January 2014, exactly that was explained to me, how ISIS was to offset Shia influence and guarantee Iraq would remain under US-Saudi control.

The Sunni leaders, who controlled key military commands and provincial governorships, planned to simply turn affairs over to ISIS and, in fact, did so despite my warnings.

Months later, several I met with had been beheaded by ISIS. “What goes around comes around.”

As to Mahdi’s deal with China, that as we will see, precipitated the American staged coup, the following from the Middle East Institute:

“Upon arriving in Beijing on September 19 at the head of a 55-member delegation, Iraq Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi described the visit to China as heralding a “quantum leap” in bilateral relations.The five-day visit culminated in the signing of eight wide-ranging memoranda of understanding (MoUs), a framework credit agreement, and the announcement of plans for Iraq to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).Since then, however, a wave of angry anti-government protests have swept across much of Iraq, leaving more than 100 dead and thousands wounded — a vivid reminder of the country’s ongoing struggle for stability and of the obstacles to the further consolidation of China-Iraq relations.” 

These anti-government protests are attributed to threats made by Donald Trump, as we will see in the full text of Mahdi’s address to parliament, below. The rationale is simple, the China deal was Iraq’s best effort to address unemployment and economic inequality, why would someone want to sabotage it?

More on Mahdi’s leadership below, again from the Middle East Institute:

“Since early 2018, the central government of Iraq has been working assiduously to capitalize on the territorial defeat of Da’esh, which three years earlier had overrun and controlled nearly one-third of the country. A working relationship between the GOI and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been reestablished. After repeated delays due to a series of security incidents the newly constructed Qaim border crossing with Syria has reopened. Planning for construction of a new crude oil pipeline from Kirkuk to Turkey is underway.

Yet, although Iraq has entered a period of relative calm, the country faces a multitude of challenges.The security situation in the country is fragile. According to a recent report by the Pentagon, Da’esh has “solidified its insurgent capabilities in Iraq.” Meanwhile, the GOI is struggling to maintain a delicate balance in its relations with key allies US / Saudi Arabia and Iran, as well as to avoid becoming another front in an escalating Iran-Israel proxy war. On July 1, Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi issued a decree ordering the integration of all Iraqi militias, including the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).”

Only with a broader context of events, with an understandable timeline, can we adequately assess Trump’s blunder here.

But also, we can only asses the nature of Trump’s methods through an unedited translation of the nature of the critical exchange between Trump and Mahdi that led to Soleimani’s murder.

Finally, the complete address by Abdul Mahdi has been made available, which now fills the gaps the West has allowed to support the limited narrative fed to congress.

“This is why I visited China and signed an important agreement with them to undertake the construction instead. Upon my return, Trump called me to ask me to reject this agreement. When I refused, he threatened to unleash huge demonstrations against me that would end my premiership.

Huge demonstrations against me duly materialized and Trump called again to threaten that if I did not comply with his demands, then he would have Marine snipers on tall buildings target protesters and security personnel alike in order to pressure me.

I refused again and handed in my resignation. To this day the Americans insist on us rescinding our deal with the Chinese.

After this, when our Minister of Defense publicly stated that a third party was targeting both protestors and security personnel alike (just as Trump had threatened, he would do), I received a new call from Trump threatening to kill both me and the Minister of Defense if we kept on talking about this “third party”.

I was supposed to meet him [Soleimani] later in the morning when he was killed. He came to deliver a message from Iran in response to the message we had delivered to the Iranians from the Saudis.

The Kingdom’s statement regarding the events in Iraq stresses the Kingdom’s view of the importance of de-escalation to save the countries of the region and their people from the risks of any escalation.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was not consulted regarding the US strike. In light of the rapid developments, the Kingdom stresses the importance of exercising restraint to guard against all acts that may lead to escalation, with severe consequences.

Saudi Arabia is sending a delegation to Washington to urge restraint with Iran on behalf of [Persian] Gulf states. The message will be: ‘Please spare us the pain of going through another war’.”

It is also clear that Trump’s hubris in his wild threats against Iraq and his willingness to murder the foremost military leader in the war on terror is based on what American author and former CIA officer Robert David Steele calls the “Cult of West Point Class of 1986”and Politico calls the “West Point Mafia.”

Steele postulates that this single class, a collection of “bad apples” as it were, has pushed Trump toward one failed endeavor after another. From Stratfor:

“Since graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986, the careers of Mike Pompeo, Ulrich Brechbuhl, Brian Bulatao, Mark Esper, David Urban and Mark Green have periodically intersected. Now they have converged in the Trump administration.”

These are the geniuses that told Trump Iran had only old Soviet “scud” type missiles, with liquid fuel, no guidance and poor reliability. Of course, none have actual military experience other than as “place holders” and “seat warmers.”

Then the surprise came, Iran’s missiles rained down on al Asad Air Base, easily pushing past America’s Patriot missile defense system, “0” hit. Worse still, the highly advanced solid fuel missiles from Iraq hit within not yards but within 10 feet of targets, actually much closer than that.

Similarly, when missiles plowed into the “consular” facilities, really weapons warehouses, at Erbil International Airport, in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq, the US denied any hits claiming to have shot down two of three missiles and the other a “wide miss.”

Then, as is so often the case, American military personnel billeted in the apartment buildings just south of the facility uploaded their video to YouTube.

Three missiles, three direct hits, dramatic explosions, which the Americans seemed to enjoy immensely.

We now enter a new world, not just one with America “schooled” but with America’s actual role exposed, occupier, terrorist and thief.

Irak gevangen door VS agressie richting Iran en daarnaast een opstand in eigen land

Het volgende schreef ik op 18 mei dit jaar, n.a.v. een artikel over Iran en Irak en de relatie van deze landen met de VS..... Het bericht is aan m'n aandacht ontsnapt maar kwam weer 'bovendrijven' door de opstand die gaande is in Irak. Opvallend deze grote opstand, waarbij al honderden mensen zijn omgekomen (veelal vermoord door veiligheidstroepen van politie en leger), waar een sjiitische regering het land regeert, 'toevallig' staan de sjiieten er al decennia slecht op bij de VS, zie de genocide in Jemen...... Een genocide uitgevoerd op het sjiitische deel van het volk, waarbij de VS en GB hand- en spandiensten verlenen..... Verder is een opstand gaande in Libanon, waar de CIA op zeker de hand in heeft, daar men van Hezbollah af wil, een sjiitische politieke en hulporganisatie..... Gegarandeerd ook dat de Mossad de CIA meehelpt de stabiliteit van dat land te ondermijnen......

Vergeet verder niet alle smerige acties van de VS tegen Iran, zoals de illegale sancties tegen dat land......

Hier het stuk dat ik een aantal maanden geleden schreef:

Alex MacDonald schreef een artikel op Middle East Eye (MEE) over de verschillende signalen uit het Witte Huis t.a.v. Iran en Irak, terwijl de laatste 2 landen voor een behoorlijk deel op elkaar zijn aangewezen, zo komt een groot deel van het gas dat in Irak wordt gebruikt, uit Iran.

Pompeo heeft Irak opgedragen de Iraanse milities in de hand te houden daar de VS anders zonder Bagdad acties zal ondernemen tegen deze milities......

Het hieronder opgenomen artikel voegt nog meer onzekerheid toe aan wat er staat te gebeuren in het Midden-Oosten, mocht de VS besluiten een volgende illegale oorlog te beginnen, die tegen Iran.....

De aanvallen tegen tankers vorige week werden al gezien als de volgende false flag operatie van de VS om Iran te demoniseren en daarmee een reden te hebben Iran aan te vallen, iets dat nog steeds zou kunnen gebeuren, als de VS een onderzoek doet, waarbij de uitkomst van te voren is vastgesteld: Iran is de schuldige..... (het zou bepaald de eerste keer niet zijn dat de VS met dit bijltje hakt...)

Voorts heeft de VS laten weten dat wanneer haar troepen in Irak worden aangevallen, het zelf actie zal ondernemen, zonder de Iraakse regering daar in te kennen..... Niet vreemd dus dat verzetsgroepen die o.a. tegen IS vochten, groepen die wel en niet door Iran worden gesteund, eisen dat de VS zich volledig terugtrekt uit Irak, echter daar lijkt het nog steeds niet op (zelfs niet een aantal maanden later, dus op 8 november 2019)

Eén ding is zeker, de Trump administratie is verdeeld over wat te doen inzake Iran, hoewel oorlogsmisdadiger en topterrorist Bolton, een ploert die grote invloed heeft op het psychopathische beest Trump, er geen twijfel over laat bestaan: de VS moet Iran aanvallen en moet alleen daarvoor al in Irak blijven...... (gelukkig is de psychopathische oorlogsmisdadiger Bolton intussen afgeserveerd)

With tensions once again ratcheting up between the US and Iran, Iraq is, as usual, stuck in the middle.

On Wednesday, the US announced it was withdrawing all non-essential staff from the capital Baghdad and the Kurdish capital Erbil following an unspecified threat from Iran-linked forces.

Iraq has long been a battlefield for a proxy clash between US and Iranian interests. Thousands of US troops are still based in the country, while Iran provides financial and ideological support to a number of armed groups and political parties.

Just as many Iraqis were hopeful their country was pulling itself out of a long period of bloodshed and instability, it looks like the drums of war could be beating again.

There is chaos in the White House over how to handle Iraq

Despite the threats from armed groups, many in Iraq viewed with incredulity claims by the US that the threat from Iran-backed groups was enough to warrant pulling staff from the country.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi on Tuesday told reporters that Iraq side had not observed “movements that constitute a threat to any side. We clarified that to the Americans - the government is doing its duty to protect all parties.”

The US has had personnel in Iraq in a wide array of capacities since it invaded the country in 2003. Threats against them have been frequent and numerous since then, particularly at the height of the anti-occupation insurgency in the middle of the first decade of the century. And yet, there was no pullout of staff during that period of time.

One Iraqi government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak with the media, said that the excuses given by the US were "not at all" being taken seriously by Iraq.

"There is an increase in diplomacy, an increased number of visits by foreign affairs ministers or phone calls with them, visits by ambassadors," he said.

However, apart from somewhat greater attention being paid to the news, there was little planning going on for a possible future conflict.

"Nobody really knows what's going on," the official said

"That lack of clarity is what is driving some concerns," he explained.

Iran-Iraq ties

Any conflict between Iran and the US would inevitably have a huge impact on Iraq. 

According to the Iran-Iraq Chamber of Commerce, of $44bn Iranian non-oil exports, around $9bn worth of goods were exported to Iraq in the year to March, a 36 percent year on year increase, while as much as 40 percent of Iraqi electricity is thought to come from Iranian gas plants.

Despite renewing sanctions on Iran in November, the US has been repeatedly forced to issue waivers to Iraq, knowing full well how reliant the country is on the Islamic Republic.

Sarkawt Shams, an MP with the New Generation party, told MEE that the US decision was "immature" and based on an "inaccurate" assessment of the threats.

"There is chaos in the White House over how to handle Iraq," he said. "This White House does not have a clear policy on how to deal with Iraq - they see Iraq through a lens of anti-Iran rhetoric."

Shams said that he was concerned that the US move would end up harming relations between the two countries, which he hoped would have been strengthened in a post-Islamic State (IS) era.

"We were hoping that after the defeat of IS that we could shift relations between our two countries from military to economic and trade cooperation - that we could have the US invest in Iraq's economy, not just military capability," he explained.

All this is likely to prove a headache for Abdul Mahdi, who concluded a visit to Turkey on Thursday.

Iraq still does not have a defence or interior minister, more than a year after parliamentary elections.

Reuters quoted two Iraqi military sources as saying that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had told Iraqi officials during a surprise trip earlier this month that they would have to keep Iran-backed armed groups in check.

“They said if the US were attacked on Iraqi soil, it would take action to defend itself without coordinating with Baghdad," the source said.

Iran-backed groups such as Asaib Ahl al-Haq, the Badr Organisation and Kataib Hezbollah have repeatedly called for US troops to leave the country - as have other non-Iran-backed groups.

During a trip by Donald Trump to Iraq in December - a trip which stoked further controversy as the president chose not to meet with Iraqi officials - the former reality TV star broke with the official US policy line that troop deployment was purely aimed at targeting IS and said that it would also be monitoring Iran, comments which enraged many Iraqis.

Husham al-Hashimi, a security analyst based in Baghdad, said the controversy had "embarrased" Abdul Mahdi, who he said was attempting to tread "calmly and cautiously with the increased tension between Washington and Tehran".

"As an Iraqi citizen from outside the government and the parties, I am very anxious about the deterioration of the Iraqi economy," Hashimi told MEE. "Investors are worried because they are scared about the collapse of the Iraqi dinar against the dollar."

He added that, unless US embassy officials were able to convince their bosses in Washington otherwise, "there is a real fear no one can stop this." 

A 'real' foreign policy

A wide array of countries have pushed for the US and Iran to tone down their rhetoric and prevent an escalation following an attack on oil tankers in the Gulf on Monday.

Even the normally hawkish prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, was quoted by Israeli Channel 13 as telling top officials to “take steps to isolate Israel from any developments and ensure Israel is not dragged into this escalation".

Iraq has suffered decades of violence and unrest, including separate wars with both the US and Iran.

The hope for many now is that their country can both stabilise and begin to assert itself as an independent player in the region, and stop being the Middle East's battlefield.

"The point I discuss with officials and my colleagues in parliament is that we need to have a real Iraqi foreign policy, which we do not have," Shams explained.

"Iraq needs to be careful about its relationship with two countries, the US and Iran. Not to intervene in their conflict, but to convince both countries that Iraq is neutral and not taking sides and to bring business back to Iraq beyond the security industry and beyond military companies - so far we have failed to do that, and failed to normalise Iraq's role in the international community."
