Afghanistan oorlog: militaire top VS zei al voor het begin dat dit een niet te winnen oorlog is

De Washington Post (WaPo) doet af en toe ook wel iets goed, naast het maken van nepnieuws en het manipuleren van haar gebruikers. De WaPo heeft na een gevecht met de overheid documenten op tafel gekregen waarin duidelijk is te lezen dat de militaire top van de VS van meet af aan heeft gesteld dat de oorlog tegen de Taliban in Afghanistan niet is te winnen..... Kortom niet alleen werd op oneigenlijke gronden een oorlog aangegaan, zoals die later tegen Irak, Libië en Syrië, maar blijkt nu ook nog eens dat de militaire top in de VS vooraf heeft gesteld dat deze oorlog niet is te winnen....... Al moet gezegd worden, dat het militair-industrieel complex in de VS enorme kapitalen heeft verdiend aan deze oorlog (en de illegale oorlogen tegen de andere genoemde landen....).....  

De schrijver van het hieronder opgenomen artikel, Caitlin Johnstone vindt eigenlijk dat het gevecht van de WaPo om de bewuste gegevens boven tafel te krijgen, een nog belangrijker onderwerp..... Wat dat betreft ben ik het overigens niet met haar eens, immers het is de zoveelste keer dat er in de VS en de rest van het westen documenten worden achtergehouden waar het volk recht op heeft.... Echter veel is al bekend wat in deze Afghanistan papers staat, zo weten we al lang dat de VS al voor 9/11 een oorlog tegen Afghanistan voorbereidde...... 

Middels de Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) wat wij een 'WOB-verzoek' noemen (Wet Openbaarheid van Bestuur), heeft WaPo de documenten boven tafel gekregen. Wel moet ik zeggen dat Johnstone een mooie analyse heeft gemaakt van het 'wobben' in de VS.....

Overigens zet e.e.a. nog grotere vraagtekens bij het meedoen van Nederland aan de illegale oorlog in Afghanistan die ons honderden miljoenen aan belastinggeld heeft gekost, om maar te zwijgen over de door Nederlands ingrijpen omgekomen burgers en Nederlandse militairen die omkwamen, of voor de rest van hun leven geestelijk en/of lichamelijk zijn beschadigd...... Daarnaast hebben we ook nog eens te maken met de burgerdoden in de andere genoemde illegale oorlogen en de Nederlandse militairen die bij deze andere oorlogen omkwamen..... 

In totaal moeten de kosten voor de inzet van Nederlandse militairen (ook in Mali, wat een uitvloeisel is van de schandelijke NAVO oorlog tegen Libië) meer dan 1 of zelfs 2 miljard euro bedragen en dan lopen de VS en anderen te zeiken dat we meer moeten uitgeven aan 'defensie' (lees: oorlogsvoering in een land waar we niets te zoeken hebben!!)..... Dan reken ik niet eens de kosten mee van de enorme vluchtelingenstromen richting Europa en de terreur op de straten van Europa, beiden het gevolg van die illegale oorlogsvoering.... 

Terecht stelt Johnstone dat men zoveel mogelijk documenten geheim verklaart, in het belang van de staatsveiligheid, terwijl die documenten niets te maken hebben met de staatsveiligheid en het volk juist recht heeft op die informatie...... Dat is dan ook de manier waarop men bepaalde zaken onder de pet kan houden en er een enorme strijd nodig is om ze toch boven tafel te krijgen..... Hier hebben we o.a. te maken met de commissie stiekem, waar alleen bepaalde politici toegang tot hebben en zelfs als zij concluderen dat e.e.a niet thuishoort bij de commissie stiekem mag er niet over gesproken worden, een schande van formaat dat politici zich hieraan hebben verbonden, ronduit een aanslag op onze democratie!! Voorts worden niet zelden de middels een WOB-verzoek verkregen documenten voor een groot deel zwart gemaakt....*

 The Most Significant Afghanistan Papers Revelation Is How Difficult They Were To Make Public

The Washington Post has published clear, undeniable evidence that US government officials have been lying to the public about the war in Afghanistan, a shocking revelation for anyone who has done no research whatsoever into the history of US interventionism.

In all seriousness it was a very good and newsworthy publication, and those who did the heavy lifting bringing the Afghanistan Papers into public awareness deserve full credit. The frank comments of US military officials plainly stating that from the very beginning this was an unwinnable conflict, initiated in a region nobody understood, without anyone being able to so much as articulate what victory would even look like, make up an extremely important piece of information that is in conflict with everything the public has been told about this war by their government.

But the most significant revelation to come out of this story is not in the Afghanistan Papers themselves.

The most significant Afghanistan Papers revelation comes from The Washington Post's account of the extremely difficult time they had extricating these important documents from the talons of government secrecy, as detailed in a separate article titled "How The Post unearthed The Afghanistan Papers". WaPo explains how the papers were ultimately obtained via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests which, after they were initially rejected by the US government, needed to be supplemented over three years with two lawsuits.

"The Post’s efforts to obtain the Afghanistan documents also illustrate how difficult it can be for journalists — or any citizen — to pry public information from the government," WaPo reports. "The purpose of FOIA is to open up federal agencies to public scrutiny. But officials determined to thwart the spirit of the law can drag out requests for years, hoping requesters will eventually give up."

"In October 2017, The Post sued the inspector general in U.S. District Court in Washington — a step that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees — to obtain the Flynn interview materials," WaPo adds.

Now, The Washington Post is a giant, for-profit corporate media outlet which is solely owned by Jeff Bezos, who is currently listed as the wealthiest person on earth. Does anyone reading this have hundreds of thousands of dollars and years of their life to spend battling the US government into complying with its own transparency laws? Are any of the alternative media outlets which consistently oppose US imperialism able to afford many such expenditures? I would guess not.

Is it not disturbing that the American taxpayer has to depend on outlets like The Washington Post, a neocon-packed outlet with an extensive history of promoting US interventionism at every opportunity, to extract these documents from behind the wall of government opacity?

After all, by WaPo's own admission it both sought and published the Afghanistan Papers in order to take a swing at Donald Trump. According to the Post it went down this path in 2016 initially seeking documents on Michael Flynn, who was then part of the Trump campaign, after receiving a tip that he'd made some juicy statements about the war in Afghanistan to the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). WaPo then made the decision to publish the papers now rather than waiting for its legal battle for more information to complete because Trump is currently in the midst of negotiating with the Taliban over a potential troop withdrawal.

"The Post is publishing the documents now, instead of waiting for a final ruling, to inform the public while the Trump administration is negotiating with the Taliban and considering whether to withdraw the 13,000 U.S. troops who remain in Afghanistan," WaPo reports.

It is obviously an inherently good thing that WaPo poured its immense wealth and resources into pursuing and publishing these documents. But would it have done so if those documents hadn't presented an opportunity to embarrass the Trump administration? What kinds of information does the notoriously war-happy WaPo not spend its wealth and resources pursuing and publishing? Probably a whole lot.

It is a very safe assumption that, because of the immense walls of government opacity that have been built up around the unconscionable things America's elected and unelected leadership is doing, there are far, far more evil things that are far, far worse than anything revealed in the Afghanistan Papers that we don't know about, and that we don't even know we don't know about. Is it not deeply disturbing that we have to pray that some war-loving, establishment-supporting billionaire media outlet will have a partisan agenda to advance if we want to know about even a tiny sliver of this information?

The story won’t be one about corruption and false reports of progress but of knowingly helping Al Qaeda, its radical rebel friends, even ISIS.

I mean, it's not like the Afghanistan Papers revealed anything we didn't already know. It's been public knowledge for many years that there was a preexisting agenda to invade Afghanistan well before September 11, it's been public knowledge that many lies were put in place after the invasion, and it's been public knowledge for a long time that we're being lied to about how well the war is going. All these new revelations did was reify and draw attention to what anyone with an ear to the ground already knew: like all other US-led military interventions, we were lied to about Afghanistan. It's not like the US government was staving off some massive unknown bombshell revelation with its resistance to WaPo's FOIA requests. Yet it resisted them anyway, just because it was more convenient.

Julian Assange once said "The overwhelming majority of information is classified to protect political security, not national security," and we see this tacitly confirmed by the US government in its massive backlogs of unanswered FOIA requests, illegitimate refusals, unjustifiable redactions and exploitation of loopholes to retain as much security as possible. As one Twitter follower recently put it, "The FOIA was enacted in 1966 to make legally compulsory the opening of government activities to 'sunlight'. Fifty-three years later, the government has learned how to neutralize the law and once again hide their misconduct. Classifying everything is one way, requiring an expensive 'lawsuit' is another."

It shouldn't work this way. People shouldn't have to count on immoral plutocratic media institutions to get their government to tell them the truth about what's being done in their name using their tax dollars. A free nation would have privacy for its citizenry and transparency for its government; with the growing increase in surveillance and government secrecy across the entire US-centralized empire, what we're getting is the exact opposite.

Whistleblowers Claim Trump Trying to Transfer Nuke Technology to Saudi Arabia

(ZH) — The House Oversight committee now chaired by Democrat Elijah Cummings issued an interim staff report after several whistleblowers came forward “to warn about efforts inside the White House to rush the transfer of highly sensitive U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia in potential violation of the Atomic Energy Act,” spearheaded by Jared Kushner, according to a press release by the House Oversight Committee.

The press release is in conjunction with the announcement of an investigation into the allegations. 

The plan, which reportedly involved former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Kushner and Trump fundraiser Thomas Barrack, would see the development of “dozens of nuclear power plants” in a “Middle East Marshall Plan” through IP3 – a private US company which has “assembled a consortium of US companies to build nuclear plants in Saudi Arabia.”

The whistleblowers allege that the efforts were made without review by Congress “as required by law,” and may be ongoing to this day.

“The whistleblowers who came forward have expressed significant concerns about the potential procedural and legal violations connected with rushing through a plan to transfer nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia.  They have warned of conflicts of interest among top White House advisers that could implicate federal criminal statutes.  They have also warned about a working environment inside the White House marked by chaos, dysfunction, and backbiting.  And they have warned about political appointees ignoring directives from top ethics advisors at the White House who repeatedly and unsuccessfully ordered senior Trump Administration officials to halt their efforts.” -Interim Staff Report

According to the report, efforts to transfer the sensitive US nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia may be accelerating following White House meetings last week ahead of Jared Kushner’s planned visit to the Middle-Eastern country.

“The Committee’s investigation is particularly critical because the Administration’s efforts to transfer sensitive U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia appear to be ongoing.  On February 12, 2019, the President met with nuclear power developers at the White House about sharing nuclear technology with countries in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia.  In addition, next week Mr. Kushner will be embarking on a tour of Middle Eastern capitals—including Riyadh—to discuss the economic portion of the Administration’s Middle East peace plan.” -Interim Staff Report

The report notes that the White House has failed to submit a report on the murder of Washington Post columnist and political operative Jamal Khashoggi.

The press release continues:

The report indicates that there is now serious, bipartisan concern with the Trump Administration’s efforts to transfer sensitive U.S. nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia.  For example, on October 31, 2018, Republican Senators Marco Rubio, Todd Young, Cory Gardner, Rand Paul, and Dean Heller sent a letter to President Trump urging him to “suspend talks related to a potential civil nuclear cooperation agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia” due to “serious concerns about the transparency, accountability, and judgment of current decisionmakers in Saudi Arabia.”

The report describes new documents and communications between White House officials, including former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, former Deputy National Security Advisor K.T. McFarland, and former NSC Senior Director for Middle East and North African Affairs Derek Harvey, as well as with Thomas Barrack, President Trump’s personal friend of several decades and the Chairman of his Inaugural Committee, and Rick Gates, President Trump’s former Deputy Campaign Manager and Deputy Chairman of the Inaugural Committee who has now pleaded guilty to financial fraud and lying to investigators.

Today, Cummings also sent letters to multiple entities involved with promoting this plan, including the White House; the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy, State, and Treasury; the Joint Chiefs of Staff; the Central Intelligence Agency; Flynn Intel Group; IP3; ACU Strategies; Colony NorthStar; and Mr. Barrack.

Ontving afgelopen vrijdag het hieronder opgenomen artikel van Caitlin Johnstone, waarin ze de vloer aanveegt met de democraten die zogenaamd oppositie voeren tegen Trump, terwijl ze zijn meer dan belachelijke verhoging van het oorlogsbudget goedkeuren. De democraten tonen zogenaamd hun ongenoegen over Trump op basis van vermeende Russische inmenging in de presidentsverkiezingen van 2016, een zaak die nooit te bewijzen valt, daar het eenvoudigweg niet gebeurd is, wat men je ook vertelt in de reguliere (massa-) media. Elk zogenaamd bewijs blijkt na een korte beschouwing weer het zoveelste niet te bewijzen kul verhaal te zijn.....

Zoals die media maar achter de onzin over Russische inmenging aan blijven lopen en het verkondigen als 'de weg, de waarheid en het leven', zo doet de democratische oppositie dit ook en niet zonder reden. Johnstone stelt volkomen terecht dat er in de VS eigenlijk niets te kiezen valt, de democraten en republikeinen staan beide achter de grootschalige terreur die de VS waar het maar kan uitoefent, van Latijns-Amerika, via Afrika, Europa en het Midden-Oosten tot in Azië..... De uitspraak over het niet bestaande verschil tussen republikeinen en democraten komt overigens van Julian Assange, zoals je in het artikel kan lezen.

Zou ik bijna de EU vergeten, al staat die als 'één man' achter wat de VS en nu de Trump administratie ook maar flikt.... Dezelfde EU die Trump zelfs gelijk geeft als hij erop wijst dat het oorlogsbudget ('defensie') van de meeste NAVO-EU-lidstaten veel te laag is, waar deze EU oplichters dondersgoed weten dat de VS door haar illegale oorlogvoering en andere misdadige acties in het buitenland uiteraard veel meer moet uitgeven aan oorlogsvoering.... Alsof men niet weet dat alleen de EU-lidstaten Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië, Frankrijk en Italië al meer dan 3 keer zoveel uitgeven aan oorlogsvoering dan de Russen aan defensie en buitenlandse hulp, zoals die aan Syrië..... Daarover gesproken: de kosten voor buitenlandse (illegale) Nederlandse militaire missies komen voor een groot deel niet uit het defensie budget!

Johnstone komt met een voorbeeld dat duidelijk toont dat de democraten in feite het verlengde van de republikeinen zijn: de genocide die Saoedi-Arabië met hulp van o.a. de VS pleegt in buurland Jemen (jammer dat zij nog steeds niet spreekt van een genocide, terwijl alle tekenen daarvoor volop aanwezig zijn!)...... Hoe makkelijk kan het voor de democraten zijn om deze genocide te gebruiken tegen Trump, zo zijn de laatste paar jaar mede door toedoen van de VS al duizenden kinderen omgekomen in Jemen..... Nee, die kaart spelen de democraten niet omdat ze er vierkant achter staan en stonden, ook toen de Obama ('vredes') administratie hetzelfde flikte.........

Trump's "Opposition" Supports All His Evil Agendas While Attacking Fake Nonsens

A new article from the Wall Street Journal reports that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lied to congress about the measures Saudi Arabia is taking to minimize the civilian casualties in its catastrophic war on Yemen, and that he did so in order to secure two billion dollars for war profiteers.

This is about as depraved as anything you could possibly imagine. US-made bombs have been conclusively tied to civilian deaths in a war which has caused the single worst humanitarian crisis on earth, a crisis which sees scores of Yemeni children dying every single day and has placed five million children at risk of death by starvation in a nation where families are now eating leaves to survive.  CIA veteran Bruce Riedel once said that “if the United States of America and the United Kingdom tonight told King Salman that this war has to end, it would end tomorrow, because the Royal Saudi Airforce cannot operate without American and British support.” Nobody other than war plutocrats benefits from the US assisting Saudi Arabia in its monstrous crimes against humanity, and yet Pompeo chose to override his own expert advisors on the matter for fear of hurting the income of those very war plutocrats.

It would be so very, very easy for Democratic party leaders and Democrat-aligned media to hurt this administration at the highest level and cause irreparable political damage based on this story. All they'd have to do is give it the same blanket coverage they've given the stories about Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos and Paul Manafort which end up leading nowhere remotely near impeachment or proof of collusion with the Russian government. The footage of the starving children is right there, ready to be aired to pluck at the heart strings of rank-and-file Americans day after day until Republicans have lost all hope of victory in the midterms and in 2020; all they'd have to do is use it. But they don't. And they won't.

The US Senate has just passed Trump's mammoth military spending increase by a landslide 92-8 vote. The eight senators who voted "nay"? Seven Republicans, and Independent Bernie Sanders. Every single Democrat supported the most bloated war budget since the height of the Iraq war. Rather than doing everything they can to weaken the potential damage that can be done by a president they've been assuring us is a dangerous hybrid of equal parts Benedict Arnold and Adolf Hitler, they've been actively increasing his power as Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful military force the world has ever seen.

The reason for this is very simple: President Trump's ostensible political opposition does not oppose President Trump. They're on the same team, wearing different uniforms. This is the reason they attack him on Russian collusion accusations which the brighter bulbs among them know full well will never be proven and have no basis in reality. They don't stand up to Trump because, as Julian Assange once said, they are Trump.

In John Steinbeck's The Pearl, there are jewelry buyers set up around a fishing community which are all owned by the same plutocrat, but they all pretend to be in competition with one another. When the story's protagonist discovers an enormous and valuable pearl and goes to sell it, they all gather round and individually bid far less than it is worth in order to trick him into giving it away for almost nothing. US politics is pretty much the same; two mainstream parties owned by the same political class, engaged in a staged bidding war for votes to give the illusion of competition.

In reality, the US political system is like the unplugged video game remote that kids give their baby brother so he stops whining that he wants a turn to play. No matter who they vote for they get an Orwellian warmongering government which exists solely to advance the agendas of a plutocratic class which has no loyalties to any nation; the only difference is sometimes that government is pretending to care about women and minorities and sometimes it's pretending to care about white men. In reality, all the jewelers work for the same plutocrat, and that video game remote won't impact the outcome of the game no matter how many buttons you push.

The only way to effect real change is to stop playing along with the rigged system and start waking people up to the lies. As long as Americans believe that the mass media are telling them the truth about their country and their partisan votes are going somewhere useful, the populace whose numbers should give it immense influence is nullified and sedated into a passive ride toward war, ecocide and oppression. If enough of us keep throwing sand in the gears of the lie factory, we can wake the masses up from the oligarchic lullaby they're being sung. And then maybe we'll be big enough to have a shot at grabbing one of the real video game controllers.
