Julian Assange blijft in de gevangenis na uitzitten straf en dat voor het doen van zijn werk

Het Britse parlement en dan met name de Conservatieven (lees: neoliberalen) is werkelijk geheel en al veranderd in een lachertje, met een onbeschoft, inhumane zelfs fascistoïde kijk op de wereld..... In juni dit jaar, nog onder hare hysterica May, heeft de minister van binnenlandse zaken, Sajid Javid het uitleveringsbevel voor Assange getekend, dit volkomen tegen de rechten van de mens in en tegen het recht van het publiek op een eerlijke, onafhankelijke pers......

Assange deed niet meer dan zijn werk als journalist, toen hem gelekte documenten onder ogen kwamen (van een klokkenluider) en hij deze publiceerde, documenten van de VS overheid waarin klip en klaar stond met wat voor smerige spelletjes de VS bezig is over de wereld..... Elke journalist die dit had geweigerd, zou onmiddellijk moeten worden ontslagen (Max van Weezel was zo'n figuur en dat naar eigen zeggen)..... Assange is ook de oprichter van WikiLeaks, een klokkenluiderssite over m.n. de VS buitenlandpolitiek en waar je zelf ook kan grasduinen in documenten, die wel zijn gescand op gevoelige informatie, zodat met de informatie mensen geen gevaar lopen.

Er zijn dan ook nog maar weinig echte journalisten werkzaam voor de reguliere westerse media, men levert wat er gevraagd wordt: het bewaren van de huidige status quo ten koste van alles en men schaamt zich er zelfs niet meer voor dat men doet wat de baas en de regering hen bij ernstige zaken vertelt te doen, desnoods komt men zelf nog met bewijzen voor heel dikke leugens, zoals in het geval van rampvlucht MH17, of voorafgaand aan de illegale oorlog tegen Libië....

Nog sterker: een aantal van deze zogenaamde journalisten beschuldigden Assange van het samenwerken met Rusland en men nam gewoon de aanklachten over zoals die werden ingefluisterd door de regering in Washington: Assange is een verrader en zou mensenlevens in gevaar hebben gebracht......... Deze journalisten werken dan ook nog eens samen met de overheid om zogenaamd nepnieuws (fake news) van de alternatieve media aan de kaak te stellen, terwijl men zelf niet anders doet dan fake news en desinformatie brengen, zodat de regering in Washington de bal alleen nog hoeft in te schieten.......

Wat een enorme schande dat de zogenaamde onafhankelijke massamedia niet grootschalig in verzet komen tegen de uitlevering van Assange..... Een uitlevering die wat mij betreft een ernstige schending is van de mensenrechten, immers in de VS bestaat geen eerlijk proces, de hoogste rechters worden zelfs door de politiek aangewezen...... (ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ja, te zot voor woorden!!) Dan is er in de VS nog het schandalige 'plea bargain', waar je beter schuld kan bekennen ook al heb je iets niet gedaan, daar je bij schuldig bevinding een veel zwaardere straf krijgt..... Dit nog naast het feit dat de VS de doodstraf uitvoert en daar nu zelfs weer de elektrische stoel voor gebruikt......* (aan dat land levert Nederland desnoods zelfs eigen onderdanen uit!!)

Julian Assange to stay in prison after jail sentence ends over absconding fears

September 13, 2019 "Information Clearing House" - Julian Assange will remain in prison after his jail sentence finishes because of fears he may run away.

The WikiLeaks founder was told this morning that he would not be freed when his current term for skipping bail expires on September 22.

Assange, 48, was handed a 50 week jail sentence in May following his seven year stay in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, which ended when he was dragged out of the Knightsbridge property by the police.

Then home secretary Sajid Javid signed an order in June allowing Assange to be extradited to the US over computer-hacking allegations.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard this morning that there were "substantial grounds" for believing that Assange would be at risk of absconding.

The WikiLeaks founder appeared by video-link from HMP Belmarsh wearing a loose-fitting T-shirt.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser told Assange: "You have been produced today because your sentence of imprisonment is about to come to an end.

"When that happens your remand status changes from a serving prisoner to a person facing extradition.

"Therefore I have given your lawyer an opportunity to make an application for bail on your behalf and she has declined to do so. Perhaps not surprisingly in light of your history of absconding in these proceedings.

"In my view I have substantial ground for believing if I release you, you will abscond again."

Assange was asked if he understood what was happening, and replied: "Not really. I'm sure the lawyers will explain it."


Another administrative hearing will take place on October 11 followed by a case management hearing on October 21, the court heard.

Afghanistan en kritiek van de VS

In reactie op de mogelijke start van een officieel onderzoek naar de situatie in Afghanistan uitte de National Security Advisor Bolton van de VS stevige kritiek op het Hof en dreigde hij met sancties tegen Strafhof-personeel en landen die meewerken aan onderzoeken tegen Amerikaanse onderdanen en bondgenoten (waaronder Israël). President Trump sprak het voornemen uit nog meer bilaterale verdragen te willen sluiten die uitlevering van Amerikanen moeten voorkomen. De houding van de VS heeft ook gevolgen voor de positie van het Strafhof met betrekking tot verschillende resoluties van de Verenigde Naties, met inbegrip van doorverwijzingen naar het Strafhof door de Veiligheidsraad. Het kabinet heeft, zowel binnenlands als tijdens de Algemene Vergadering van de VN, aangegeven pal voor het Strafhof te zullen blijven staan en heeft deze boodschap ook uitgedragen in bilaterale contacten. Ook in Europees verband is besloten dat EU lidstaten hun steun voor het Hof sterk blijven uitdragen. Deze boodschap zal Nederland ook in de Vergadering van Verdragspartijen herhalen, waar een speciaal agenda item voor dit onderwerp is gereserveerd.

Zoals je kan lezen in feite geen woord van kritiek op deze smerige bedreiging van de VS tegen een internationaal gerechtshof, de westerse wereld had op haar kop moeten staan..... E.e.a. versterkt dan ook de kritiek op het hof dat het alleen mensen uit Afrika berecht......

Post-Brexit plan May: migranten moeten minstens 30.000 pond per jaar verdienen voor toelating in GB

De Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) en Confederation of British Industry (CBI) hebben gehakt gemaakt van het plan voor immigranten dat de regering May en in het bijzonder Sajid Javid, de minister van binnenlandse zaken, heeft gemaakt voor de periode na de Brexit.

Immigranten moeten als alles doorgaat minstens een baan van 30.000 pond per jaar hebben in GB, om nog te mogen werken in Groot-Brittannië........

Niet vreemd dat de bedrijven aan de bel trekken, immers zij betalen liever een immigrant dan een Brit, daar de eersten (als in Nederland) veel goedkoper zijn......

Uiteraard toont de regering May hiermee ten overvloede aan dat GB een klassenmaatschappij is, immers welgestelden zullen met deze plannen geen probleem hebben zich te vestigen in Groot-Brittannië.....

Ook is dit plan ingegeven door de xenofobie onder een groot deel van de Britse bevolking, die zich in grote getale hebben aangesloten bij de fascistische Ukip, dan wel stemt dat deel van de bevolking voor die fascisten, ofwel de neoliberale Tories proberen stemmen te winnen onder mensen die zijn voorgelogen over arbeidsmigratie, leugens die ook door politici van May's regeringspartij zijn geventileerd......

Een smerige zaak, daar de Britse regering al jaren geleden had moeten zorgen, dat buitenlandse arbeiders evenveel betaald krijgen als hun Britse collega's, waar deze salarissen mee zouden moeten stijgen met loonsverhogingen. Echter dat zal een neoliberale regering als die van May nooit doen, juist daar ze de belangen van bedrijven behartigen, althans normaal gesproken.... 

Natuurlijk zijn de werkgevers en de top van de FTSE (aandelenbeurs) uitermate hypocriet, dit daar ze de buitenlandse werknemers veel te weinig betalen (of willen dat dit mogelijk blijft) en daarmee Britse arbeiders buitenspel zetten...... Niet alleen spekken ze daarmee de eigen portemonnee, maar kweken ze ook vreemdelingenhaat in eigen land, me dunkt een strafvervolging waardig!

Overigens in Nederland is het niet veel beter, ondanks zogenaamde waarborgen dat buitenlandse arbeiders niet (meer) worden uitgebuit, gebeurt dit nog steeds op grote schaal! Tuinders in het Westland hebben daar een manier voor gevonden: ze nemen 2 ploegen Oost-Europese arbeiders 'in dienst', 1 groep werkt een half jaar en moet dan plaats maken voor de 2de ploeg, die na een half jaar weer door de eerste wordt vervangen. Daarmee kunnen deze tuinders de arbeidsmigranten het allerlaagste salaris uitbetalen en hoeven ze bovendien geen loonsverhogingen te betalen...... Verder worden veel van deze arbeiders door de tuinders gehuisvest, een minimale huisvesting waarvoor deze arbeiders de hoofdprijs moeten betalen..... Rutte 3 wenst daar vooralsnog niets tegen deze smerige uitbuiting te doen, ondanks de 'mooie praatjes' van de verantwoordelijke D66 minister en opperhufter Koolmees.....

PS: in feite is e.e.a. een maatregel om zoveel mogelijk arbeidsmigratie tegen te gaan, daar je al voor binnenkomt in GB moet aantonen dat je een baan krijgt, waarvoor minstens 30.000 pond per jaar wordt betaald....... Nogmaals: miljonairs en miljardairs zullen (zoals nu al het geval is) geen probleem hebben met het zich vestigen in GB, een schande van formaat.............

'Novitsjok-agenten' geïdentificeerd als Russen omdat een paar Russen GB bezochten...... ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

Vanmorgen op zo ongeveer alle landelijke nieuwszenders in West-Europa het bericht dat de Britten via camerabeelden hebben besloten dat Russen 'inderdaad' de Skripals hebben vergiftigd met novitsjok...... Welke beelden vraag je je af? Simpel, beelden van Russen die voor deze 'aanslag met novitsjok' GB waren binnengekomen en daarna het land weer verlaten hebben...... ha! ha! ha! ha! Dagelijks komen er vele tientallen Russen het land in, om van een paar dagen tot weken daarna weer terug te reizen naar hun moederland...... Voor de Britse geheime diensten en politie is dit het bewijs dat de Russen verantwoordelijk zijn voor de vergiftiging met novitsjok......

Over novitsjok gesproken: als de Skripals daadwerkelijk met dit chemische wapen werden vergiftigd, hadden ze bij wijze van spreken al lang en breed onder de groene zoden gelegen, novitsjok is dodelijk, zelfs tot op vele tientallen meters van de plaats van vergiftiging!! (ofwel dan waren er veel meer slachtoffers gevallen...) Men had Sergei Skripal zelfs al in de Russische gevangenis kunnen vermoorden......

Bovendien hebben de Russen herhaaldelijk gevraagd om een staal van het gif, zodat men dit zelf kan onderzoeken, verzoeken die telkens weer worden afgewezen door de kwaadaardige regering May........

Zoals zo vaak op deze plek betoogt: -de Russen hadden er totaal geen belang bij de Skripals te vergiftigen, zeker niet in de aanloop van het WK voetbal in Rusland, -niet omdat de Russen al van alles wat er mis gaat op deze planeet worden aangewezen als dader (en zoals gezegd: als Rusland Sergei Skripal dood wilden hebben, was hij dat al lang en breed geweest, zonder dat iemand de doodsoorzaak zou hebben kunnen toeschrijven aan de Russen....).... Bovendien zijn er genoeg dodelijke stoffen, die niet uit de voormalige Sovjet-Unie komen (daarnaast hadden ook andere voormalige Sovjet staten de formule voor novitsjok en voldoende mogelijkheid dit gif te maken.....)

Gezien dat laatste is het zeer goed mogelijk dat bijvoorbeeld Oekraine Rusland in een kwaad daglicht wilde stellen, ofwel had een false flag operatie kunnen uitvoeren in GB.... Met de toevoeging dat dit niet met novitsjok is gebeurd, zoals eerder betoogd......

De tweede vergiftiging met novitsjok zou best eens kunnen zijn uitgevoerd met het echte spul..... Een vergiftiging waaraan een vrouw, die op geen enkele manier te verbinden is met Rusland, na een week overleed.... Goed mogelijk dat deze vrouwe moest sterven puur en alleen om het publiek te overtuigen dat de Skripals inderdaad met novitsjok werden 'aangevallen...'

Zonder enig commentaar op de vergiftiging met novitsjok, bijvoorbeeld met de toevoeging dat de vergiftiging met novitsjok van de Skripals feitelijk onmogelijk is en te wijzen op het totaal ontbreken van bewijs voor deze leugen, berichtten de reguliere media vanmorgen dat het bewijs voor de vergiftiging met novitsjok is geleverd.......

De leugen dat de Skripals zijn vergiftigd met novitsjok is totaal ongeloofwaardig en uitermate belachelijk!! Ofwel de reguliere westerse media hebben zoals gewoonlijk een enorme berg fake news (nepnieuws) gebracht en daarmee het zoveelste geval van (ongefundeerde) anti-Russische propaganda!!

Tot slot nog de volgende vraag: waarom mogen de Skripals geen contact hebben met de pers....??? Is men in GB bang dat met dergelijk contact het novitsjok verhaal en de beschuldiging aan het adres van Rusland al helemaal als belachelijk te boek komt te staan???

A Tale of Two Poisonings

Shaping a story to fit the agenda

July 18, 2018 "Information Clearing House" -  Poisoning enemies has a long history with Augustus Caesar’s wife Livia allegedly a master of the art, as were the Borgias in Renaissance Italy. Lately there has been a resurgence in allegations regarding the use of poisons of various types by several governments. The claims are particularly damaging both morally and legally as international conventions regard the use of poisonous chemical compounds as particularly heinous, condemning their use because they, when employed in quantity, become “weapons of mass destruction,” killing indiscriminately and horribly, making no distinction between combatants and civilians. Their use is considered to be a “war crime” and the government officials who ordered their deployment are “war criminals,” subject to prosecution by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.


There are two important poisoning stories that have made the news recently. Both are follow-ups to reporting that has appeared in the news over the past few months and both are particularly interesting because they tend to repudiate earlier coverage that had been largely accepted by several governments as well as the media and the chattering class of paid experts that appears on television.


The first story relates to the poisoning of former Russian intelligence agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March. There was quite a bit that was odd about the Skripal case, which relied from the start “…on circumstantial evidence and secret intelligence.” And there was inevitably a rush to judgment. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson blamed Russia less than forty-eight hours after the Skripals were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury England, too soon for any chemical analysis of the alleged poisoning to have taken place.

British Prime Minister Theresa May threw gasoline on the fire when she addressed Parliament shortly thereafter to blame the Kremlin and demand a Russian official response to the event in 36 hours, declaring that the apparent poisoning was “very likely” caused by a made-in-Russia nerve agent referred to by its generic name novichok. The British media was soon on board with a vengeance, spreading the government line that such a highly sensitive operation would require the approval of President Vladimir Putin himself. The expulsion of Russian diplomats soon followed with the United States and other countries following suit.


Repeated requests by Russia to obtain a sample of the alleged nerve agent for testing were rejected by the British government in spite of the fact that a military grade nerve agent would have surely killed both the Skripals as well as anyone else within 100 yards. As the latest British account of the location of the alleged poison places it on the door handle of the Scripals’ residence, the timetable element was also unconvincing. That meant that the two would have spent three hours, including a stop at a pub and lunch, before succumbing on a park bench. Military grade nerve agents kill instantly.


The head of Britain’s own chemical weapons facility Porton Down even contradicted claims made by May, Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, and British Ambassador in Moscow Laurie Bristow. The lab’s Chief Executive Gary Aitkenhead testified that he did not know if the nerve agent was actually produced in Russia, a not surprising observation as the chemical formula was revealed to the public in a scientific paper in 1992 and there are an estimated twenty countries capable of producing it. There are also presumed stocks of novichok remaining in independent countries that once were part of the Soviet Union, to include Russia’s enemy du jour Ukraine, while a false flag operation by the British themselves, the CIA or Mossad, is not unthinkable.


Nevertheless, the politically weak May government, desperately seeking a formidable foreign enemy to rally around against, insisted that Russia, almost certainly acting under orders from Vladimir Putin himself, carried out the killing of a former British double agent who had been released from a Kremlin prison in a spy swap and who was no longer capable of doing any damage to Russia. Putin apparently did all that in spite of the fact that he had an election coming up and would be the host of the World Cup in the summer, an event that would be an absolute top priority to have go smoothly.

Now there has been an actual death in Amesbury near Salisbury that has been attributed to novichok. On June 30^th, Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess were admitted to hospital after being found unconscious. Sturgess died eight days later. The May government has not yet blamed it on Putin or even on a clumsy Russian operative that might have inadvertently left behind a vial of poison or a used syringe, though Home Secretary Sajid Javid came close to that when he suggested that Russia was using Britain as a “dumping ground for poisons.” Police suggestions that the poisoned couple appear to have handled novichok infused material of some kind before succumbing appears to be contradicted by inability to find the actual source of the alleged exposure.


British government dancing around the issue notwithstanding, there have been suggestions that the closest source of more novichok might well be the U.K. government labs at nearby Porton Down, only seven miles from Salisbury and Amesbury, which increases suspicion about the original story promulgated by Downing Street. Would the British government actually poison an expendable ex-Russian spy and his daughter to divert attention from a domestic political problem at home? It’s worth considering as the “blame it all on Putin narrative” becomes even less credible.

The second story comes from Syria, where there is also a Russian hand as Moscow is aiding the government of Bashar al-Assad. The by now notorious April 7, 2018 alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held Syrian city of Douma was widely blamed by Western countries and the mainstream media on Assad’s forces. This resulted in a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to order massive U.S.-led retaliatory airstrikes against targets reportedly involved in chemical production in and around Damascus.


Trump blamed “animal Assad” for “using nerve agents” and both the media and most European governments followed that line, concluding that Damascus had ordered the chemical attacks a mere moments after videos purporting to show scores of chemical attack victims first surfaced from rebel sources, long before U.S. intelligence could have made its own assessment. A 5-page White House assessment released on April 13th, just days after the alleged attack asserted that sarin was used at Douma, claiming that “A significant body of information points to the regime using chlorine in its bombardment of Duma, while some additional information points to the regime also using the nerve agent sarin.”


Independent sources warned at the time that not a single neutral observer was on the ground to confirm that chemical agents launched by the Syrian government had, in fact, been used, but were ignored. All of the sources reporting the attack were either affiliated with the rebels who occupied the area or were not physically present in Douma.


Now, finally, three months later, there has been a credible independent report on what was determined about the attack through chemical analysis of traces recovered in Douma. A preliminary report published last Friday by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) found no traces of any nerve agent like sarin at the site. The OPCW reportstates this clearly: “No organophosphorous nerve agents or their degradation products were detected in the environmental samples or in the plasma samples taken from alleged casualties.”


This means that the Trump Administration claimed to have details relating to an event in a foreign country that it did not know and could not actually confirm to be true. And it used that as a justification for ordering an airstrike that killed people and destroyed targets in Syria. Will the White House respond to the OPCW report and apologize, possibly to include reparations for an unjustified attack on another sovereign nation? Don’t hold your breath.


The Salisbury and Douma attacks are illustrative of just what happens when a government is prepared to dissimulate or even lie to go the extra mile to make a case to justify preemptive action that otherwise might be challenged. Theresa May is, unfortunately, still in power and so is Donald Trump. In a better world an outraged public would demand that they be thrown out of office and even possibly subjected to the tender ministrations of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. With power comes accountability, or at least that should be the rule, but it is a dictum that has for some time been ignored. Even given that, one might hope that the blunders will not be repeated, but there is not even any assurance that either May or Trump is much given to “lessons learned” or that a Mike Pence or Boris Johnson would be any better. That is our tragedy.

BBC: propaganda-orgaan voor het neoliberalistische beleid van de conservatieven

Gisteren op het blog van Stan van Houcke een artikel van the Canary, dat op 6 mei vorig jaar werd gepubliceerd. Het handelt hier over wie macht uitoefent via de BBC, de publieke Britse omroep, die intussen gerust een gezwel kan worden genoemd, als je alle aftakkingen in het buitenland ziet, zoals die in Canada.

Op dit blog heeft u al vaak kunnen lezen, over de propaganda die de BBC dag in dag uitstort over het Britse publiek, neem de Brexit of de enorme hoeveelheid leugens over de strijd in Aleppo (en het weglaten van feiten, zoals de terreur die de 'gematigde rebellen' uitoefende op de bevolking in Oost-Aleppo....)........

The sorry facts which show the BBC has moved beyond bias, into pure propaganda

EDITORIAL

The BBC and its political editor Laura Kuenssberg are under fire this week, following local election coverage which has been dismissed as nothing short of propaganda by people across the country. But how did we get here?

Who runs the BBC?

The current abysmal state of BBC News and Politics makes much more sense when you see who has been appointed to plot its editorial course.

The BBC Trust is responsible for granting licenses to all BBC outlets and stations, managing value for money on licence fee payments and ‘the direction of BBC editorial and creative output’. The Trust consists of 12 Trustees and is headed by Rona Fairhead – who also happens to have been a longtime board member of HSBC bank.

As The Canary’s James Wright reported earlier this year:

Fairhead has entrenched ties to the Tory government. In fact, she and Osborne are old friends. Fairhead worked for the Conservative government as a cabinet office member, until being appointed by the previous Conservative culture secretary – Sajid Javid – as the new head of the BBC Trust. She is still business ambassador for David Cameron.

Fairhead has also sat on the board of HSBC directors for a long time. And what is even more shocking than her other Conservative links are claims that she was actually appointed chairwoman of the BBC Trust to keep a lid on Cameron’s involvement in covering up a £1bn fraudulent HSBC scam on British shoppers. Whistle-blower Nicholas Wilson made various freedom of information requests that confirmed that Fairhead’s appointment did not follow proper procedure. She was rushed to the position after the application date closed, with no mention of her on any contemporary media shortlist.

Her appointment does not coincide with the normal process, and many questioned why a business tycoon was right for the job. What it did coincide with was a string of interconnected visits from the BBC, HSBC, the Houses of Parliament and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to Wilson’s website where he details the scam and the FCA and Cameron’s involvement in covering it up.

But the conflicts of interest do not stop at Fairhead.

The Director of News and Current Affairs at the BBC, James Harding, is a former employee of the Murdoch Press. While Editor of The Times newspaper, he was responsible for exposing the identity of police blogger NightJack by hacking the blogger’s email accounts – which his legal team then covered up during a court case against the action. Harding has also gone on the record as ‘pro Israel’.

This is the calibre of the figures responsible for hiring the news teams, presenters and journalists who will report on matters of hacking, privacy, and the Middle East.

These are not trivial conflicts of interests. The two individuals primarily responsible for driving the News and Politics agenda for the BBC, are instead driving forward their personal and professional causes – and the licence fee payer is footing the bill.

What is the impact on reporting?

These conflicts of interest affect the reporting of News and Politics at the BBC in a very real way. In 2013, researchers at Cardiff University undertook a major content analysis of BBC coverage – funded in part by the BBC Trust. They studied the impartiality of BBC reporting across several areas, including the Israel-Palestine conflict, the EU, business and economics, and politics.

The findings revealed that:

• Whichever party is in power, the Conservative party is granted more air time.
• On BBC News at Six, business representatives outnumbered trade union spokespersons by more than five to one (11 vs 2) in 2007 and by 19 to one in 2012.
• When it comes to the Financial Crisis, BBC coverage was almost completely dominated by stockbrokers, investment bankers, hedge fund managers and other City voices. Civil society voices or commentators who questioned the benefits of having such a large finance sector were almost completely absent from coverage.

On top of this, BBC reporting of Israel-Palestine has been woefully partisan – and in 2013, we found out one reason why.

In 2013, a devastating report by Electronic Intifada, revealed that Raffi Berg, online editor for BBC News, was instructing journalists to skew reports on Israel-Palestine in favour of Israel. While hundreds of Palestinians were losing their lives during Israel’s eight day assault on the Gaza strip in 2012, Berg was emailing journalists with ‘guidance’ to maintain a pro-Israel tone in their reports. This from the report:

In one, he asked BBC colleagues to word their stories in a way which does not blame or “put undue emphasis” on Israel for starting the prolonged attacks. Instead, he encouraged journalists to promote the Israeli government line that the “offensive” was “aimed at ending rocket fire from Gaza.”

This was despite the fact that Israel broke a ceasefire when it attacked Gaza on 14 November, a ceasefire which the Palestinians had been observing — firing no rockets into Israel.

In a second email, sent during the same period, Berg told BBC journalists:

“Please remember, Israel doesn’t maintain a blockade around Gaza. Egypt controls the southern border.”

He omitted to mention that the United Nations views Israel as the occupying power in Gaza and has called on Israel to end its siege of the Strip. Israel’s refusal to do so is a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1860.”

Berg is still in his role.

All that’s left is propaganda

Recently, these two vested interests – pro-neoliberalism and pro-Israel – converged on an area of common interest: opposition to Jeremy Corbyn.

This united bitter Blairites, Conservatives and pro-Israel groups – who ran perhaps the most toxic smear campaign against the Labour party and its leader in living memory. In the run up to the local elections on May 5, the headlines across the BBC and wider media’s flagship television and radio programs was not the 1 million people in the UK reliant on food banks to eat, but the intrigue of the smear campaign.

Prior to the elections, the reporting by Kuenssberg was dominated almost exclusively by claims of crisis within Labour, providing a platform to a minority of bitter Blairites, and applying pressure on Corbyn to stand aside – or at the very least prepare to.

On Friday morning – when Corbyn’s vote had not collapsed, but increased, compared to Miliband’s general election performance of 2015 – there was no apology for the wrongful prediction. Instead, the narrative wheeled on regardless. While the SNP lost their majority in Scotland, and Labour advanced in England and Wales – this was the BBC website’s response.

The situation brings to mind the moment when the BBC’s Andrew Marr interviewed Noam Chomsky about the role of the mainstream media as a propaganda service. Chomsky was discussing the role of self-censorship by journalists, and Marr repudiated the claim, asking:

“How can you know if I am self-censoring?” Arguing he had never been censored, or told what to think.

Chomsky calmly responds, as if he were explaining the non-existence of Santa Claus to a child:

“I’m sure you believe everything you’re saying, but what I’m saying is that if you believed something different, you wouldn’t be sitting where you’re sitting.”

And therein lies the rub with the role of the BBC, and the wider mainstream media, as a vehicle by which to advance the causes of those who own and run them. There is a monopoly of wealth and power in our society which translates directly into a monopoly of the media. The result is a staggering lack of diversity and pluralism of voices and opinions in the mainstream space. The media has become little more than a monotonous, relentless monologue – when as a country, and a world, we need to be having a conversation.
