Honduras in de greep van VS 'vriendelijke terreur': een deel van de bevolking vlucht richting VS

Ongelofelijk dat men werkelijk denkt dat met Biden de situatie voor veel landen zal verbeteren als het gaat om mensenrechten en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid >> waarom zou men dat denken als je ziet dat Biden tot de weinige VS presidenten behoort die al voor diens presidentschap aangemerkt moet worden als oorlogsmisdadiger...... Deze 'twijfelachtige eer' verwierf Biden al onder 'vredesduif' Obama, als diens vicepresident is hij mede verantwoordelijk voor de illegale oorlogen die de VS aanging en de oorlogen die de VS veroorzaakte tijdens de administratie van Obama...... Dit nog naast medeverantwoordelijkheid voor het ingrijpen in landen middels het organiseren van opstanden en zelfs staatsgrepen, zoals die in het Honduras van 2009..... Deze coup werd door Hillary Clinton, destijds VS minister van buitenlandse zaken, georganiseerd en samen met de CIA geregisseerd..... (nogmaals: onder medeverantwoordelijkheid van Joe Biden en Barack Obama....)

'Large Groups of Hondurans Set Off for U.S., as Mexico Pledges to Block Them' (Wall Street Journal)

Sinds die tijd is er een waar (beter: zwaar) terreurbewind gaande in Honduras, waarvan al velen het slachtoffer zijn geworden en milieu- en mensenrechtenactivisten als Berta Cáceres vogelvrij zijn verklaard......... Een aantal van hen zijn als Cáceres vermoord en niet zelden op een vreselijk barbaarse manier....... Ondanks dat de verkiezingen die sinds de staatsgreep in Honduras werden gehouden en die overduidelijk waren gestoken, werd er geen kritiek geleverd door de VS of de rest van het westen, dit in sterke tegenstelling tot andere landen in Latijns-Amerika, die niet als een hond achter de VS aanlopen en waar de westerse landen na elke verkiezing stellen dat deze werden gemanipuleerd (hoewel internationale waarnemers ze wel als eerlijk beoordeelden, zoals de laatste verkiezingen in Venezuela)......

Het gaat de VS en de rest van het westen dan ook om het veiligstellen van grondstoffen en belangenbehartiging van westerse bedrijven in die landen, zo heeft de NAVO nu ook 2 bases in Colombia....... Over Colombia gesproken: gisternacht op BBC World Service het bericht dat de regering van Álvaro Uribe Vélez, veelal aangeduid als (Álvaro) Uribe, die het land regeerde van 2002 tot augustus 2010, verantwoordelijk is voor massamoorden, dit door de vondst van massagraven waarover men bekend maakte dat daar 6.500 burgers werden gevonden, vermoord door regeringstroepen...... (eerder ging men uit van rond de 2.000 moorden) Uribe, de fascist die goede banden onderhield met zowel George W. Bush als 'vredesduif' Obama......

Trump sloot een verdrag met Honduras en Guatemala, om vluchtelingenkaravanen richting VS uit elkaar te slaan (mensen die vluchten vanwege overheidsgeweld en de uitzichtloze situatie voor de sterk verarmde grote onderlaag). Je zou verwachten dat Biden onmiddellijk een streep heeft gezet door dat misselijkmakende verdrag, gezien zijn woorden in aanloop van de verkiezingen, maar niet is minder waar >> Biden laat Honduras en Guatemala gewoon doorgaan met de zware repressie en het uiteenslaan van vluchtelingen karavanen, die na het verdwijnen van Trump weer zijn ontstaan en waarvan er een paar alweer op weg zijn naar de grens tussen Mexico en de VS, waar al 25.000 vluchtelingen wachten om te worden toegelaten tot de VS, of die ten einde raad de gevaarlijke illegale overgang van de grens zoeken, waar velen het leven laten in de woestijn......

Roberta Jacobson, Bidens hoogste ambtenaar die de opdracht kreeg om een nieuwe, veilige en humane migratie politiek te vormen, heeft Biden gevraagd geduldig te zijn en heeft er bij hem op aangedrongen geen nieuwe migranten toe te laten...... (nogmaals terwijl er al 25.000 mensen aan de grens wachten om te worden toegelaten, mensen die daar vaak al langer dan een jaar wachten, terwijl zij op de vlucht zijn voor door de VS veroorzaakte terreur...).... Overigens is het de vraag wat Biden en Jacobson achter gesloten deuren hebben besproken, daar het bepaald niet ondenkbaar is dat deze woorden van te voren door Biden werden ingefluisterd, immers de man is een enorme hypocriet....)

Bidens immigratie politiek houdt o.a. in dat de VS 4 miljard dollar zal spenderen aan Honduras, Guatemala en El Salvador, om met dat geld de reden voor het vluchten tegen te gaan, waarbij de Biden administratie ervan uitgaat dat dit puur economische redenen zijn, wat ze duidelijk niet zijn en dat moet hij gezien zijn geschiedenis weten!!! Volkomen terecht dan ook dat John Perry, de schrijver van het hieronder opgenomen artikel, stelt dat geld pompen in landen waar de regering voor enorme ellende zorgt niet zal helpen, sterker nog dat kan het probleem alleen maar verergeren (en nogmaals: totdat de foute machthebbers weg zijn, al is dat zelfs geen garantie zoals Perry opmerkt, daar het systeem erop is gericht om de belangen van het westen veilig te stellen..... Een 'Catch 22' situatie, immers Biden en zijn administratie zullen op zeker niets doen tegen deze belangenbehartiging.....

Perry schrijft in zijn artikel dat eerder op London Review of Books werd gepubliceerd en dat ik overnam van Information Clearing House (ICH), o.a. over de in feite onwettige president van Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández (JOH), dat deze van Honduras een narcostaat heeft gemaakt en dat een laboratorium voor cocaïne, onder zijn verantwoording beschermd door het leger, verantwoordelijk is voor de maandelijkse 'export' van honderden kilo's cocaïne naar Miami (Florida)...... Terwijl organisaties die verantwoordelijk zijn voor herstel na bijvoorbeeld orkanen amper of niet werken, de hulpgelden verdwijnen voor een groot deel in 'bepaalde zakken', vandaar ook dat men in Honduras zegt dat wanneer deze organisaties drugslaboratoria waren geweest, de boel wel zou werken.....

February 18, 2021 "Information Clearing House" - On the day he was inaugurated, Joe Biden halted the construction of Trump’s Mexican border wall. A few days earlier, 1500 miles to the south, a new ‘caravan’ of at least eight thousand Honduran migrants had set off northwards, partly in the hope that by the time they tried to cross into Texas, Biden’s promised softening of immigration policy might have taken effect.

Obstacles left by Trump still stand in their way. Agreements he made with Honduras and Guatemala led to police attacking and dispersing the refugees. Scattered groups are still heading towards the Mexican frontier at Chiapas – according to one Trump-era official, ‘now our southern border’ – where they will face Mexican troops. If they eventually reach the Rio Grande, they’ll join 25,000 asylum seekers in camps, waiting to be processed by US border officials. Roberta Jacobson, Biden’s official charged with forming his new ‘secure, managed and humane’ migration policy, has asked them to be patient and pleaded for no new arrivals.

Why do people take these risks? The truth is that Honduras is a failed state and, unless US policy towards it changes radically, many thousands more will head north. Since the military coup in 2009 there have been three corrupt elections. The last, in 2017, which saw Juan Orlando Hernández (JOH) re-elected when he had clearly lost, led to even more repression. Persecution of human rights defenders is unceasing, even after international condemnation of the murder of Berta Cáceres five years ago. Seven were killed in 2020, and four young leaders from Garifuna communities, abducted in a single night seven months ago, are still missing.

Curfews during the Covid-19 pandemic appear to have worsened the day-to-day violence: eleven corpses were found in the street in one week in January; bodies are being chopped up and left wrapped in plastic. Perhaps the most emotive case occurred earlier this month: a doctor and student nurse, who had been working with Covid patients, were arrested for breaching the 9 p.m. curfew. The doctor was freed, but the nurse died in police custody. Protests erupted. Five people were arrested, tortured by the police and forced to confess to crimes they didn’t commit.

In November, two hurricanes hit a country totally unprepared for them, destroying 6000 homes and seriously damaging 85,000 more. By December, JOH was touring financial institutions in Washington looking for money. He collected more than $3 billion in aid for hurricane victims, despite well-publicised corruption in the disbursement of funds donated earlier to tackle Covid-19. Shortly after his visit, federal prosecutors in New York –who a year ago established that JOH had created a narco-state – filed documents in a new drugs case. After quoting JOH saying he would ‘shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos’ by flooding the US with cocaine, they accuse him of ‘embezzling aid money provided by the United States through fraudulent non-governmental organisations’. A Honduran narcotics lab, protected by the military on JOH’s orders, had been sending hundreds of kilos of cocaine to Miami every month.

The massive disruption caused by the storms provoked a fresh peak of Covid-19 infections: 1100 new cases on a single day in mid-January, the highest so far. Weakened by corruption and underfunding, the health service is overwhelmed. At least 75 doctors and dozens of nurses have died, many as a result of overcrowded wards and poor equipment. ‘We have to wait until someone dies to give their bed to someone else,’ a doctor said. To fill the gaps, seven mobile hospitals were ordered last March but only two are working properly. The head of the agency which made the $47 million deal, accused of corruption, was sacked. People protested under the banner: ‘If it were a narco lab, it would be working.’

Biden’s immigration policy includes spending $4 billion in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to address the problems that spur migration. It should be obvious, not least from the evidence accumulated by New York prosecutors, that the ruling party in Tegucigalpa is unfit to govern, even if JOH is replaced in elections in November. But the problems go much deeper than that: the whole governing system serves the needs of big business – often North American companies – as it exploits both the land and the workforce, destroying the environment and maintaining the second biggest gap between rich and poor in Latin America. Throwing money at the problems could simply make them worse unless Biden makes the fundamental changes in US policy that both Obama and his secretary of state Hillary Clinton refused to contemplate. Perhaps aware that this won’t be achieved quickly or easily, Biden officials appear to have quietly asked Mexico and its neighbours to continue to deter migrant caravans, even as a new one is said to be forming.

JOH meanwhile faces not only political rejection but possible extradition if the US turns against him. He’s reported to be ‘trying to figure out how to refashion himself from a Trump ally into a Biden one’. He tweeted a photo of himself with Biden in 2015: ‘I hope we can work together,’ he wrote, ‘like in the past.’

Westen hekelt Rusland en China voor het verspreiden van anti-Coronavaccins in arme landen

Ongelofelijk maar een feit: in Nederland en verder in het westen wordt er steeds meer agressief ingehakt op de zogenaamde vaccindiplomatie van Rusland en China.....

Niet omdat men het vaccin niet vertrouwt, maar omdat men vermoedt dat de vaccins niet zo maar worden weggegeven....... Rusland en China zouden hiermee invloed 'kopen' in de landen waar men de vaccins verspreidt.......

Wat je ook vindt van het vaccin, het is zonder meer te zot voor woorden dat het westen, die alle westerse vaccinproductie zo ongeveer heeft opgekocht en daarmee de arme landen laat zitten zonder vaccins, nu een grote bek durft te hebben op landen die wel verantwoordelijkheid tonen voor hun mede wereldburgers...... Men heeft er in het westen zelfs geen moeite mee dat Israël met opzet vaccins voor de Palestijnen tegenhoudt, nee, Israël is goed bezig met vaccineren van de eigen (Joodse) bevolking en dat wordt overal met veel omhaal gebracht, terwijl het tegenhouden van vaccins voor de Palestijnen geen aandacht krijgt.... En dat gezegd hebbende, moet ik ook nog uitkijken ook met deze kritiek niet voor antisemiet te worden uitgemaakt........

Foto uit Parool waar de ondertitel luidt: 'Vaccindiplomatie: China en Rusland gebruiken vaccin voor imagoboost......' (maar wat goedkoop om daar een Aziatische vrouw, waarschijnlijk een Chinese arts of verpleegkundige, voor te misbruiken; vergeet niet dat je daarmee ook haat zaait tegen deze Nederlanders.....)

Tijdens het schrijven van dit artikel luisterde ik naar BBC World Service radio, toevallig was daar een programma bezig waarin men wees op deze 'vaccindiplomatie', die zoals in het Parool werd verkocht als imagoboost voor China en Rusland, ofwel onversneden westerse propaganda..... Gelukkig dat men op de BBC een verstandige deskundige aan het woord heeft gelaten, die stelde dat de landen die het westen zo laat zitten, lak hebben waar het vaccin vandaan komt, als er maar gevaccineerd kan worden.....

Het voorgaande is ook logisch daar COVID-19 als de 'gewone griep' vooral slachtoffers maakt onder mensen die om de één of andere manier zwak zijn, of dat nu ouderen zijn, dan wel mensen die honger moeten lijden, of zelfs verstoken zijn van goede medische zorg en medicatie, al deze mensen hebben veel minder weerstand tegen besmettelijke ziekten, dan mensen die in grotere welstand leven....... Niet vanwege gebrek aan medische zorg of medicijnen, eiste en eist het virus ook in Groot-Brittannië grote aantal slachtoffers, niet vreemd als je bedenkt dat in GB al voor de Coronacrisis zo'n 4 miljoen kinderen dagelijks met honger naar school moesten....... In de VS is het niet anders, ook daar veel dodelijke slachtoffers. De VS waar een groeiend aantal kinderen als ouderen honger moet lijden, daar gaat het intussen al om meer dan 14 miljoen kinderen en logischerwijs is het aantal oudere mensen die honger moeten lijden nog veel groter......... Brazilië en andere landen waar grote delen van de bevolking verzwakt zijn door ondervoeding of een gebrek aan medische zorg en waar het armste deel van de bevolking meestal noodgedwongen bovenop elkaars lip moet leven, hebben dan ook een groot aantal dodelijke slachtoffers.....  

Na dat programma zette ik de zender op WDR 5, daar was juist een column van een journalist te horen die de draak stak met de Russische vaccins, waarbij deze zelfs Stalin van stal dacht te moeten halen, terwijl Duitsland met Hitler als voormalig leider nationaal en internationaal nog wel wat verder ging dan Stalin.......

Het Care 2 team heeft een petitie opgesteld, waar in terecht wordt gesteld dat we als mens niet alleen hebben weggekeken van de klimaatverandering die in een paar decennia de dood heeft veroorzaakt van een enorm aantal mensen en daarbij honderden miljarden aan schade heeft veroorzaakt, maar dat de mens ook bijna niets heeft gedaan tegen het bewust en onbewust uitmoorden van wilde diersoorten, waardoor in slechts 50 jaar tijd 68% dus meer dan de helft van de bekende wilde diersoorten is verdwenen....... Eén en ander is gebaseerd op het Living Planet Report 2020. (de link naar dat rapport vindt je in de tweede alinea van de Care 2 petitie onder dit schrijven)

Dit is bijzonder tragisch aldus het team, daar het bestaan van deze dieren belangrijk is voor de ecologische balans op aarde en voor het bewoonbaar houden van de aarde...... We misbruiken de wereld door overontwikkeling, ontbossing, en het vervuilen van lucht, bodem en water, plus de niet duurzame landbouw (in de breedste zin, dus inclusief de intensieve veehouderij, ook verantwoordelijk voor het afbranden van het Amazonewoud t.b.v. sojateelt voor veevoer en inrichting van intensieve veehouderij)..... Met deze misdaden tegen onze planeet, ons thuis, hebben we massa's wilde dieren, niet alleen verbrand, maar bij wijze van spreken voorgoed begraven........

Volkomen terecht weer dat het team in vet lettertype meldt dat we de cirkel van het leven hebben verstoord en verstoren, als we hiermee doorgaan zal de planeet reageren door totaal onleefbaar te worden...... (zie het oprukken van de woestijn en het verwoestijnen van grote gebieden, zoals een groeiend deel van Spanje......) 'We' maken ons hysterisch druk om COVID-19, terwijl we wegkijken van deze veel dodelijker zaak, waarbij niet vergeten moet worden dat het Coronavirus en andere besmettelijke ziekten voortkomen uit het massaal vermoorden van 'consumptie dieren.....' (een walgelijke woordcombinatie, zo walgelijk als de intensieve martelveehouderij is!!)

Volgens het Living Planet Rapport 2020, opgesteld door het Wereldnatuurfonds (WWF) en de Zoological Society in Londen, is de wereldwijde dierlijke populatie met 68% afgenomen sinds 1970. Ofwel (en nogmaals) meer dan de helft van de dieren op aarde is dood en dat m.n. in gebieden dicht bij de evenaar, zoals de tropen in Zuid-Amerika, maar ook Zuidoost-Azië en Australië* dat ten zuiden van de evenaar ligt**, waar de opwarming van de aarde in alle extremiteit is te voelen, in die gebieden is de populatie van de wilde dieren zelfs tot dicht bij de 94% afgenomen....... Dit ligt niet ver meer van de 100% en waar dieren eenmaal zijn verdwenen, zijn deze voorgoed verloren en daarmee gaat ook het milieu verloren die het leven mogelijk maken.....

Lees en teken ajb de petitie gericht aan de VN om een interventie team te vormen dat de taak moet krijgen de negatieve effecten van de klimaatverandering nog enigszins terug te dringen, effecten die de tropische gebieden in Zuid-Amerika (en elders) nu al ondervinden en onbewoonbaar maken door de klimaatverandering en waar zoals gezegd het grootste deel van de dieren al voorgoed is verdwenen...... Zo moet men ook stoppen met het verbranden van oerwoud voor bijvoorbeeld de sojateelt t.b.v. onze enorme veestapel van 600 miljoen dieren (ja meer dan een half miljard!!!)...... Er zou dan ook met de grootste spoed een eind moeten worden gemaakt aan de doodsindustrie die men intensieve veeteelt noemt!!*** En geeft het door aan familie, vrienden en kennissen!! Onder het artikel heb ik nog een schrijven opgenomen van de Compassion in World Farming (CIW) directeur, ook dat gaat over het uitsterven van dieren, met ook daaraan gekoppeld de waarschuwing dat dit een gevaar is voor de rest van de ecosystemen en de aarde, maar zoals je al kon lezen: ook voor de mensheid....... A new report just revealed that human action has killed over half the world’s wildlife in just 50 years

 

As experts for decades have warned, we have not done nearly enough to combat climate change and we are starting to see the devastating effects of a warming planet. And the first victims of these effects are the animals! This is especially tragic because even the mere existence of these creatures is a massive part of what keeps our earth's ecology balanced to keep our world habitable. As we abuse the earth with overdevelopment, deforestation, air, water, and soil pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices, we are burying masses of wildlife beneath our transgressions. We are disrupting the circle of life, and if we take things too far, our planet will respond by becoming totally unlivable.

According to the Living Planet Report 2020 provided by World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of London, worldwide animal populations have plummeted 68% on average since 1970. Over half the world's animals, dead. And in areas closest to the equator like the tropical Americas, which experience global warming to the extreme, animal communities shrank by closer to 94%.

That is nearly 100%. Once these animals are lost, they are lost forever, and with them the chain of events that keep our environment hospitable to life itself. Sign the petition to implore the United Nations to create a task force specific to the tropical Americas that would prop up conservation efforts, restrictions on habitat decimation, and sustainable solutions to the ticking time bomb that is factory farming!

Make no mistake -- it is human action that has caused this mass death. The Living Planet Report 2020 does not skirt around the point. We flatten forests, 'the earth's lungs,' to make way for our own masses of machinery, farms, or waste. The animals that once called those forests home perish. We overuse freshwater resources for processing and farming, paying no mind to conservation, leaving lake and river beds dry or polluted. The organisms we stole from shrivel and die. We pollute the air, we overfish, we kill animals at unnecessarily high rates, our actions cause global temperatures to rise, and now we are seeing patterns of mass death in wildlife. And somehow, many of us are fooling ourselves into believing we won't be next.

But we will be. The scientists behind this report, which has been labeled "uncharacteristically bold and direct," are desperate to get through to us. The report literally says, "biodiversity keeps us alive, so we need to ensure that we stop destroying it." Let's do just that.

The United Nations is a vital resource, bringing nations together since, at the end of the day, we are one big global community. Larger, wealthier countries need to be held responsible for the plights of smaller nations for two main reasons. One: these countries, like the United States, are often wealthier and more powerful because they exploit smaller countries that cannot defend or support themselves. And two: the bigger players contribute far more to climate change through industry, emissions, and pollutants; they should have a proportionate contribution to also fighting climate change. The tropical Americas experiencing an almost 100% loss of biodiversity is not entirely, or even mostly, their fault. They need aid in the form of the UN redistributing resources. 

Sign the petition and ask the UN to form a special task force to address the contributing factors to an almost 100% decrease in animal populations in the tropical Americas. We need global solutions for the world's animals survival, now!

Nieuw rapport adviseert: Planten eten om de aarde te redden

                  

Wilde olifanten op Sumatra vallen wanhopig dorpen aan op zoek naar voedsel, gedreven omdat het bos waarin ze leven wordt gekapt. Zuid-Afrikaanse pinguïns moeten op zoek naar een ander leefgebied, omdat de zee waaruit ze hun voedsel halen is leeggevist. Jaguars in Brazilië worden bejaagd door veehouders op het ontboste land dat eerst hun leefgebied was. Het zijn allemaal dramatische voorbeelden van diersoorten die met uitsterven bedreigd worden door menselijk handelen ¹⁾. Het zijn prachtige en unieke dieren, die we voor geen goud zouden willen missen, net zoals zoveel andere unieke dier- en plantensoorten die in hun voortbestaan bedreigd worden.

Biodiversiteit holt achteruit 

Volgens schattingen van wetenschappers wordt 25% van het aantal soorten (dieren en planten) op aarde met uitsterven bedreigd en verloopt het uitsterven van soorten momenteel minstens tien en mogelijk zelfs honderden malen sneller dan in de afgelopen 10 miljoen jaar. Sinds 1970 daalde het aantal wilde zoogdieren, vogels, vissen, reptielen en amfibieën op aarde naar schatting met 68%.

Dit verlies aan biodiversiteit is voor elke soort op zich al een ramp, maar het proces verloopt momenteel zo snel dat nu ook hele ecosystemen verdwijnen. Het massaal vernietigen van grote ecosystemen, zoals het tropisch regenwoud, draagt enorm bij aan de opwarming van de aarde: het is een regelrechte bedreiging voor veel leven op onze planeet, mensen inbegrepen.

Voedselsysteem is de oorzaak

In een nieuw wetenschappelijk rapport legt de Britse denktank Chatham House²⁾ de vinger op de zere plek: het mondiale voedselsysteem is de hoofdverantwoordelijke voor het steeds sneller verlopende verlies aan biodiversiteit. Doordat we steeds meer voedsel willen produceren, dat bovendien steeds goedkoper is, is het systeem op hol geslagen en legt het een steeds groter beslag op grond, ten koste van natuur en de leefomgeving van talrijke dieren. Haarfijn leggen de wetenschappers uit hoe dit 'cheap food paradigm' leidt tot allerlei vicieuze cirkels die de teloorgang van de biodiversiteit niet alleen in stand houden maar zelfs versnellen. De wereldwijde groei van de veehouderij speelt daarbij een belangrijke rol. Zij heeft, aldus de wetenschappers een 'disproportionele' impact op de biodiversiteit, het landgebruik en het milieu.

Meer plantaardig voedsel

Ik ben erg blij met dit uitgebreide en degelijke rapport. De wetenschappers leggen namelijk ook uit hoe we het verlies van tienduizenden dier- en plantensoorten kunnen voorkomen en de opwarming van de aarde binnen de perken kunnen houden. Daarvoor is een wereldwijde verandering nodig in de manier waarop we voedsel produceren. Volgens professor Tim Benton, de hoofdauteur van het rapport, gaat het er niet om simpelweg steeds meer voedsel te produceren (omdat de wereldbevolking groeit), maar moeten we het juiste voedsel produceren om mensen in staat te stellen te kiezen voor gezond én duurzaam geproduceerd voedsel.

Om het tij te keren moeten we daarom wereldwijd overschakelen op een ander voedselsysteem dat veel minder gebaseerd is op de productie van vlees en zuivel en juist meer op plantaardige voeding. Dát is de belangrijkste aanbeveling van de auteurs, die er ook op wijzen dat het daardoor ook mogelijk wordt landbouwgrond terug te geven aan de natuur en te voorkomen dat nóg meer natuur wordt opgeofferd aan landbouwgrond. Tenslotte raden de auteurs van het rapport aan de industriële landbouw, met haar monoculturen, kunstmest en pesticiden, te vervangen door landbouw die samenwerkt met de natuur, in plaats van deze te vernietigen. Ook dat wordt mogelijk als we overschakelen op meer plantaardig voedsel.

2021: cruciaal jaar voor de toekomst

Dit jaar organiseren de Verenigde Naties een drietal belangrijke conferenties over de aanpak van de grote crises waar de wereld, ook na corona, mee kampt. Hoe houden we de opwarming van de aarde binnen de perken? Hoe zorgen we voor voldoende gezond voedsel voor iedereen? En hoe stoppen we het rampzalige verlies aan biodiversiteit? Hiermee wordt 2021 een cruciaal jaar, waarin we het tij moeten keren om de natuur, ons voedsel en het welzijn van miljarden dieren te beschermen.

Wij zijn erbij!

Het rapport van Chatham House is een belangrijke sleutel bij de aanpak van de grote crises. Compassion in World Farming zal daarom dit jaar bij alle drie de VN conferenties aanwezig zijn om de onontkoombare conclusie van het rapport naar voren te brengen: het is de hoogste tijd om wereldwijd de handen ineen te slaan en een einde te maken aan de industriële veehouderij - voor dieren, voor mensen en voor de aarde.

Capitol Hill bestorming: leugens in de massamedia

Glenn Greenwald heeft een lijvig stuk (iets te, m.i.) geschreven over de bestorming van Capitol Hill afgelopen 6 januari en dan m.n. over de moord op een politieagent met een brandblusser, plus de rol die de media daarin spelen. Uiteraard veroordeelt Greenwald het gebruikte geweld, echter er dient wel gekeken te worden wie de slachtoffers waren.....

Greenwald stelt dat elke kritiek die men levert op de berichtgeving over wat er al meer dan een maand lang werd geschreven, wordt of afgedaan als een excuus voor de bestorming van Capitol Hill, dan wel je bent een aanhanger van de Trump supporters......

In tegenspraak met de berichtgeving, werden 4 van de 5 doden niet om het leven gebracht door de relschoppers, terwijl de enige dode die met geweld om het leven werd gebracht een ongewapende Trump supporter was: Ashli Babbitt, die van dichtbij door de politie werd neergeschoten ofwel vermoord......

Echter niet volgens de media in de VS, die kennen nog een dode, politieagent Brian Sicknick, de New York Times (NYT) was het eerste medium dat met het verhaal kwam dat Sicknick werd vermoord met een brandblusser en dan natuurlijk door een Trump aanhanger......

Echter tot op de dag van vandaag is er geen autopsie uitgevoerd op het lichaam van Sicknick en ondanks dat er gigantische veel beelden zijn 'geschoten' door veiligheidscamera's en smartphones, is er niet één beeld dat het verhaal van de NYT bevestigt...... Uhh van de NYT? Al heel snel na het artikel van dat nieuwsmedium nam zo ongeveer de hele reguliere (massa-) media in de VS dit verhaal over en hoe........ De hysterie was en is nog steeds compleet over dit valse verhaal.....

Je kan er dan ook donder op zeggen dat dit is ingegeven door de politiek, immers e.e.a. gebeurde nog voor de impeachment poging tegen Trump..... Tja kijk, als je met een vermoorde politieagent op de proppen komt krijgt zo'n zaak natuurlijk veel meer gewicht......

The False and Exaggerated Claims Still Being Spread About the Capitol Riot

Insisting on factual accuracy does not make one an apologist for the protesters. False reporting is never justified, especially to inflate threat and fear levels.

February 17, 2021 "Information Clearing House" - What took place at the Capitol on January 6 was undoubtedly a politically motivated riot. As such, it should not be controversial to regard it as a dangerous episode. Any time force or violence is introduced into what ought to be the peaceful resolution of political conflicts, it should be lamented and condemned.

But none of that justifies lying about what happened that day, especially by the news media. Condemning that riot does not allow, let alone require, echoing false claims in order to render the event more menacing and serious than it actually was. There is no circumstance or motive that justifies the dissemination of false claims by journalists. The more consequential the event, the less justified, and more harmful, serial journalistic falsehoods are.

Yet this is exactly what has happened, and continues to happen, since that riot almost seven weeks ago. And anyone who tries to correct these falsehoods is instantly attacked with the cynical accusation that if you want only truthful reporting about what happened, then you’re trying to “minimize” what happened and are likely an apologist for if not a full-fledged supporter of the protesters themselves.

One of the most significant of these falsehoods was the tale — endorsed over and over without any caveats by the media for more than a month — that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick was murdered by the pro-Trump mob when they beat him to death with a fire extinguisher. That claim was first published by The New York Times on January 8 in an article headlined “Capitol Police Officer Dies From Injuries in Pro-Trump Rampage.” It cited “two [anonymous] law enforcement officials” to claim that Sicknick died “with the mob rampaging through the halls of Congress” and after he “was struck with a fire extinguisher.”

A second New York Times article from later that day — bearing the more dramatic headline: “He Dreamed of Being a Police Officer, Then Was Killed by a Pro-Trump Mob” — elaborated on that story:

After publication of these two articles, this horrifying story about a pro-Trump mob beating a police officer to death with a fire extinguisher was repeated over and over, by multiple journalists on television, in print, and on social media. It became arguably the single most-emphasized and known story of this event, and understandably so — it was a savage and barbaric act that resulted in the harrowing killing by a pro-Trump mob of a young Capitol police officer.

It took on such importance for a clear reason: Sicknick’s death was the only example the media had of the pro-Trump mob deliberately killing anyone. In a January 11 article detailing the five people who died on the day of the Capitol protest, the New York Times again told the Sicknick story: “Law enforcement officials said he had been ‘physically engaging with protesters’ and was struck in the head with a fire extinguisher.”

But none of the other four deaths were at the hands of the protesters: the only other person killed with deliberate violence was a pro-Trump protester, Ashli Babbitt, unarmed when shot in the neck by a police officer at close range. The other three deaths were all pro-Trump protesters: Kevin Greeson, who died of a heart attack outside the Capitol; Benjamin Philips, 50, “the founder of a pro-Trump website called Trumparoo,” who died of a stroke that day; and Rosanne Boyland, a fanatical Trump supporter whom the Times says was inadvertently “killed in a crush of fellow rioters during their attempt to fight through a police line.”

This is why the fire extinguisher story became so vital to those intent on depicting these events in the most violent and menacing light possible. Without Sicknick having his skull bashed in with a fire extinguisher, there were no deaths that day that could be attributed to deliberate violence by pro-Trump protesters. Three weeks later, The Washington Post said dozens of officers (a total of 140) had various degrees of injuries, but none reported as life-threatening, and at least two police officers committed suicide after the riot. So Sicknick was the only person killed who was not a pro-Trump protester, and the only one deliberately killed by the mob itself.

It is hard to overstate how pervasive this fire extinguisher story became. Over and over, major media outlets and mainstream journalists used this story to dramatize what happened:

Television hosts gravely intoned when telling this story, manipulating viewers’ emotions by making them believe the mob had done something unspeakably barbaric:

After the media bombarded Americans with this story for a full month without pause, it took center stage at Trump’s impeachment process. As former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy noted, the article of impeachment itself stated that “Trump supporters ‘injured and killed law enforcement personnel.’” The House impeachment managers explicitly claimed on page 28 of their pretrial memorandum that “the insurrectionists killed a Capitol Police officer by striking him in the head with a fire extinguisher.”

Once the impeachment trial ended in an acquittal, President Joe Biden issued a statement and referenced this claim in the very first paragraph. Sicknick, said the President, lost “his life while protecting the Capitol from a violent, riotous mob on January 6, 2021.”

The problem with this story is that it is false in all respects. From the start, there was almost no evidence to substantiate it. The only basis were the two original New York Times articles asserting that this happened based on the claim of anonymous law enforcement officials.

Despite this alleged brutal murder taking place in one of the most surveilled buildings on the planet, filled that day with hundreds of cellphones taping the events, nobody saw video of it. No photographs depicted it. To this day, no autopsy report has been released. No details from any official source have been provided.

Not only was there no reason to believe this happened from the start, the little that was known should have caused doubt. On the same day the Times published its two articles with the “fire extinguisher” story, ProPublica published one that should have raised serious doubts about it.

The outlet interviewed Sicknick’s brother, who said that “Sicknick had texted [the family] Wednesday night to say that while he had been pepper-sprayed, he was in good spirits.” That obviously conflicted with the Times’ story that the mob “overpowered Sicknick” and “struck him in the head with a fire extinguisher,” after which, “with a bloody gash in his head, Mr. Sicknick was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support.”

But no matter. The fire extinguisher story was now a matter of lore. Nobody could question it. And nobody did: until after a February 2 CNN article that asked why nobody has been arrested for what clearly was the most serious crime committed that day: the brutal murder of Officer Sicknick with a fire extinguisher. Though the headline gave no hint of this, the middle of the article provided evidence which essentially declared the original New York Times story false:

In Sicknick's case, it's still not known publicly what caused him to collapse the night of the insurrection. Findings from a medical examiner's review have not yet been released and authorities have not made any announcements about that ongoing process.

According to one law enforcement official, medical examiners did not find signs that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma, so investigators believe that early reports that he was fatally struck by a fire extinguisher are not true.

The CNN story speculates that perhaps Sicknick inhaled “bear spray,” but like the ProPublica interview with his brother who said he inhaled pepper spray, does not say whether it came from the police or protesters. It is also just a theory. CNN noted that investigators are “vexed by a lack of evidence that could prove someone caused his death as he defended the Capitol during last month's insurrection.” Beyond that, “to date, little information has been shared publicly about the circumstances of the death of the 13-year veteran of the police force, including any findings from an autopsy that was conducted by DC's medical examiner.”

Few noticed this remarkable admission buried in this article. None of this was seriously questioned until a relatively new outlet called Revolver News on February 9 compiled and analyzed all the contradictions and lack of evidence in the prevailing story, after which Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, citing that article, devoted the first eight minutes of his February 10 program to examining these massive evidentiary holes.

That caused right-wing media outlets to begin questioning what happened, but mainstream liberal outlets — those who spread the story aggressively in the first place — largely and predictably ignored it all.

This week, the paper that first published the false story — in lieu of a retraction or an explanation of how and why it got the story wrong — simply went back to the first two articles, more than five weeks later, and quietly posted what it called an “update” at the top of both five-week-old articles:

With the impeachment trial now over, the articles are now rewritten to reflect that the original story was false. But there was nothing done by The New York Times to explain an error of this magnitude, let alone to try to undo the damage it did by misleading the public. They did not expressly retract or even “correct” the story. Worse, there is at least one article of theirs, the January 11 one that purports to describe how the five people died that day, which continues to include the false “fire extinguisher” story with no correction or update.

The fire extinguisher tale was far from the only false or dubious claim that the media caused to circulate about the events that day. In some cases, they continue to circulate them.

In the days after the protest, numerous viral tweets pointed to a photograph of Eric Munchel with zip-ties. The photo was used continually to suggest that he took those zip-ties into the Capitol because of a premeditated plot to detain lawmakers and hold them hostage. Politico described Munchel as “the man who allegedly entered the Senate chamber during the Capitol riot while carrying a taser and zip-tie handcuffs.”

The Washington Post used the images to refer to “chatters in far-right forums explicitly discussing how to storm the building, handcuff lawmakers with zip ties.” That the zip-tie photo of Munchel made the Capitol riot far more than a mere riot carried out by a band of disorganized misfits, but rather a nefarious and well-coordinated plot to kidnap members of Congress, became almost as widespread as the fire extinguisher story. Yet again, it was The New York Times that led the way in consecrating maximalist claims. “FBI Arrests Man Who Carried Zip Ties Into Capitol,” blared the paper’s headline on January 10, featuring the now-iconic photo of Munchel at the top.

But on January 21, the “zip-tie man’s” own prosecutors admitted none of that was true. He did not take zip-ties with him from home or carry them into the Capitol. Instead, he found them on a table, and took them to prevent their use by the police:

Eric Munchel, a pro-Trump rioter who stormed the Capitol building while holding plastic handcuffs, took the restraints from a table inside the Capitol building, prosecutors said in a court filing Wednesday.

Munchel, who broke into the building with his mom, was labeled "zip-tie guy" after he was photographed barreling down the Senate chamber holding the restraints. His appearance raised questions about whether the insurrectionists who sought to stop Congress from counting Electoral College votes on January 6 also intended to take lawmakers hostage.

But according to the new filing, Munchel and his mother took the handcuffs from within the Capitol building - apparently to ensure the Capitol Police couldn't use them on the insurrectionists - rather than bring them in when they initially breached the building.

(A second man whose photo with zip-ties later surfaced similarly told Ronan Farrow that he found them on the floor, and the FBI has acknowledged it has no evidence to the contrary).

Why does this matter? For the same reason media outlets so excitedly seized on this claim. If Munchel had brought zip-ties with him, that would be suggestive of a premeditated plot to detain people: quite terrorizing, as it suggests malicious and well-planned intent. But he instead just found them on a table by happenstance and, according to his own prosecutors, grabbed them with benign intent.

Then, perhaps most importantly, is the ongoing insistence on calling the Capitol riot an armed insurrection. Under the law, an insurrection is one of the most serious crises that can arise. It allows virtually unlimited presidential powers — which is why there was so much angst when Tom Cotton proposed it in his New York Times op-ed over the summer, publication of which resulted in the departure of two editors. Insurrection even allows for the suspension by the president of habeas corpus: the right to be heard in court if you are detained.

So it matters a great deal legally, but also politically, if the U.S. really did suffer an armed insurrection and continues to face one. Though there is no controlling, clear definition, that term usually connotes not a three-hour riot but an ongoing, serious plot by a faction of the citizenry to overthrow or otherwise subvert the government.

Just today, PolitiFact purported to “fact-check” a statement from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) made on Monday. Sen. Johnson told a local radio station:

"The fact of the matter is this didn’t seem like an armed insurrection to me. I mean armed, when you hear armed, don’t you think of firearms? Here’s the questions I would have liked to ask. How many firearms were confiscated? How many shots were fired? I’m only aware of one, and I’ll defend that law enforcement officer for taking that shot.

The fact-checking site assigned the Senator its “Pants on Fire” designation for that statement, calling it “ridiculous revisionist history.” But the “fact-checkers” cannot refute a single claim he made. At least from what is known publicly, there is no evidence of a single protester wielding let alone using a firearm inside the Capitol on that day. As indicated, the only person to have been shot was a pro-Trump protester killed by a Capitol police officer, and the only person said to have been killed by the protesters, Officer Sicknick, died under circumstances that are still completely unclear.

That protesters were found before and after the riot with weapons does not mean they intended to use them as part of the protest. For better or worse, the U.S. is a country where firearm possession is common and legal. And what we know for certain is that there is no evidence of anyone brandishing a gun in that building. That fact makes a pretty large dent in the attempt to characterize this as an “armed insurrection” rather than a riot.

Indeed, the most dramatic claims spread by the media to raise fear levels as high as possible and depict this as a violent insurrection have turned out to be unfounded or were affirmatively disproven.

On January 15, Reuters published an article about the arrest of the “Q-Shaman,” Jacob Chansley, headlined “U.S. says Capitol rioters meant to 'capture and assassinate' officials.” It claimed that “federal prosecutors offered an ominous new assessment of last week’s siege of the U.S. Capitol by President Donald Trump’s supporters on Thursday, saying in a court filing that rioters intended ‘to capture and assassinate elected officials.’” Predictably, that caused viral social media postings from mainstream reporters and prominent pundits, such as Harvard Law’s Laurence Tribe, manifesting in the most ominous tones possible:

Shortly thereafter, however, a DOJ “official walked back a federal claim that Capitol rioters ‘intended capture and assassinate elected officials.’" Specifically, “Washington's acting U.S. Attorney, Michael Sherwin, said in a telephone briefing, ‘There is no direct evidence at this point of kill-capture teams and assassination.’"

Over and over, no evidence has emerged for the most melodramatic media claims — torn out Panic Buttons and plots to kill Vice President Mike Pence or Mitt Romney. What we know for certain, as The Washington Post noted this week, is that “Despite warnings of violent plots around Inauguration Day, only a smattering of right-wing protesters appeared at the nation’s statehouses.” That does not sound like an ongoing insurrection, to put it mildly.

All this matters because it inherently matters if the media is recklessly circulating falsehoods about the most inflammatory and significant news stories. As was true for their series of Russiagate debacles, even if each “mistake” standing alone can be dismissed as relatively insignificant or understandable, when they pile up — always in the same narrative direction — people rightly conclude the propaganda is deliberate and trust in journalism erodes further.

But in this case, this matters for reasons far more significant than corporate media’s attempt to salvage the last vestiges of their credibility. Washington, D.C. remains indefinitely militarized. The establishment wings of both parties are still exploiting the emotions surrounding the Capitol breach to justify a new domestic War on Terror. The FBI is on the prowl for dissidents on the right and the left, and online censorship in the name of combatting domestic terrorism continues to rise.

One can — and should — condemn the January 6 riot without inflating the threat it posed. And one can — and should — insist on both factual accuracy and sober restraint without standing accused of sympathy for the rioters.
