De
oliemaatschappijen en hun machtige lobby proberen in Australië hun
gore agenda door te drukken en zo toestemming te genereren voor het
winnen van gas en olie op moeilijke locaties als in diepzee, zoals in de 'Grote Australische Bocht.......'*
Bij gas-
en oliewinning gaat altijd een grote hoeveelheid methaangas verloren,
een broeikasgas dat meer dan 80 keer zo sterk is dan CO2....
Toevallig werd afgelopen week bekend gemaakt dat in 2017 een nooit eerder
gemeten record aan methaangas werd gevonden in de atmosfeer: 600
miljoen ton en de verwachting is dat dit in 2019 nog ver werd
overtroffen..... (de cijfers voor dat jaar zijn nog niet bekend)
Te gek voor woorden dan ook dat de Australische National
Covid-19 Coordination Commission (NCCC) bestaat uit CEO's en directeuren van (grote) bedrijven..... Zij moeten zorgen dat de economie van Australië een 'kickstart' krijgt en zullen bepalen in welke bedrijven de Australische regering moet investeren om die 'kickstart' mogelijk te maken...... Niet moeilijk te verzinnen welke industrieën dat zullen zijn, op zeker dat oliemaatschappijen en de steenkoolmaffia bij de eersten zullen behoren die overheidsgeld (door de belastingbetalers bij elkaar gebracht) krijgen........ Sterker nog: de Australische premier Scott Morrison heeft de leden van de NCCC samengesteld en zoals je wellicht weet, deze plork is grote voorstander van het leegtrekken van de Australische bodem, of dat nu op land of onder de zee is.....
Juist nu is het van belang in te zetten op duurzame energie en een duurzame industrie, dat geldt in nog grotere mate voor Australië, waar bij de enorme bosbranden zoveel natuur en dieren (rond de miljard dieren....) vernietigd werden..... Premier Morrison is een klimaatscepticus en hij is dan ook mede verantwoordelijk voor het graven van een kanaal dwars door het Groot Barrièrerif, zodat enorme kolenschepen nog meer steenkool kunnen afvoeren, per dag wordt er al 1 miljoen ton steenkool geëxporteerd door Australië en dat 365 dagen per jaar......
Steenkool dat door Australië en de VS wordt gedumpt op de wereldmarkt, zodat arme landen kiezen voor kolencentrales, i.p.v. duurzame vormen van energie als wind en zon...... Trouwens niet alleen arme landen namen deze beslissing, Balkenende 4 (CDA en PvdA) keurden de bouw van 4 nieuwe kolencentrales goed, daar de steenkool zo goedkoop was (en is)........

Why fossil fuel executives get to reshape the country

The
fossil fuel lobby is trying to take advantage of this pandemic,
pushing for a dangerous gas expansion that will line their pockets
and drive up dangerous emissions.
Right
now, powerful fossil fuel executives are trying to hijack our
recovery from COVID-19.
And
I need your help to stop them
By
now, you may have heard of the National
Covid-19 Coordination Commission,
or the NCCC. They’re the small hand-picked group of corporate CEOs
and directors who’ve been brought together to guide Australia out
of this pandemic, and will recommend industries to invest in to
kickstart the economy.
This commission should be our chance to create thousands of blue-collar jobs in renewables and zero-emissions manufacturing. But instead, Scott Morrison hand-picked the commissioners, which means that fossil fuel execs and lobbyists dominate the group. And they’re advocating for massive amounts of public money to prop up fossil fuels, particularly gas. Surprise, surprise.
Let's
not mince words: throwing
public money at dangerous gas extraction would be disastrous for the
fight against climate change.
Like coal and oil, fossil gas produces dangerous greenhouse emissions that lead to chaotic climate change, making bushfires worse and putting our Reef at risk.
Even
worse, fossil gas projects leak methane, a gas that is 86 times more
damaging to the climate than carbon dioxide.
But it’s not all bad news. We’ve already started fighting back.
Nev
Power, the head of the commission, has already stepped back from the
board of a major gas company due to conflicts of interest. He was
then grilled in the Senate, and has since tried to distance himself
from his fossil gas interests.
This
means our opponents are vulnerable to criticism, so
now’s the time to ramp up the pressure.
Our
analysis shows that not enough Australians know about this murky and
secretive fossil-fuel stacked commission, or that gas is a fossil
fuel that will drive catastrophic climate change and push their
energy bills through the roof.
That’s
where you come in.
I’ve
made this explainer video on the NCCC and why gas is a rubbish idea.
The more people who see this video, the more there’ll be who won’t
be fooled by the fossil fuel lobby’s propaganda and self-interest.
This
recovery isn’t just a risk. It’s an incredible opportunity to
make record investments in renewables, that will provide thousands of
jobs across the country.
It’s
a chance to #buildbackbetter with towns and cities powered by the
wind and sun, that put people and our planet before the profits of
fossil fuel execs.
I
know it’s hard to imagine what our country could look like months
from now - let alone years. But together, we can stop our opponents
from destroying our future for their self-interest, whilst building
the clean and green country we all deserve.
