De laatste woudreuzen van Canada dreigen gekapt te worden

Je snapt werkelijk niet wat bestuurders bezielt als je leest dat men nog steeds bossen kapt ten tijde van de huidige snelle klimaatverandering, terwijl tegelijkertijd wereldwijd enorme gebieden met bos zijn verbrand dan wel in brand staan, er zijn zelfs dwazen die in Nederland volledig houten huizen willen bouwen, alsof we gvd een overschot aan bossen hebben......

In Canada waar nog slechts 1% van de grote oude woudreuzen staan die het land eerder rijk was, stopt men zelfs niet met de houtkap in de gebieden waar deze laatste zeer oude en hoge bomen staan...... Bovendien gaat het hier om oude bossen (oerbossen) die zoals je begrijpt verreweg de meeste CO2 uit de lucht halen, juist deze bossen moeten behouden blijven vanwege de al genoemde snelle klimaatverandering.... 

Nogmaals; je snapt niet hoe bestuurders dergelijke zaken toestaan of zelfs stimuleren........

Stand.earth, een onderdeel van Greenpeace vraagt ook niet-Canadezen de petitie te tekenen, een petitie die men voor het behoud van deze oude bossen is gestart. Niet meer dan terecht, deze kleine planeet is van ons allemaal en niet van een stel op macht en geld beluste politici en 'captains of industry', zoals dat laatste geteisem zich een tijdlang het liefst zag (als kapitein, niet alleen van een bedrijf maar van de wereld)! Bovendien om nog eens een cliché aan te halen: de klimaatverandering houdt niet op bij landgrenzen maar raakt de hele wereld................ 

Lees en teken de petitie ajb en geeft het door!! (binnenkort zijn er verkiezingen in Brits-Columbia, het is zaak om voor die tijd zoveel mogelijk handtekeningen te verzamelen zodat de kandidaten zien dat ze in de gaten worden gehouden en later niet kunnen zeggen: "Wir haben es nicht gewusst...."):

Protect old growth forests from logging

Canada’s westernmost province is home to some of the rarest and most carbon-rich old-growth forests on the planet. But while the British Columbia government says that “old forests” still fill out the province’s landscape, less than 1% of its forests still have big, old-growth trees. The majority of these old-growth forests are still open to logging, and don’t recover once they're chopped down.

The good news is, right now there’s a critical opportunity to put this issue at the top of the agenda for decision-makers. Because in just a few weeks, B.C. is holding an election.

If concerned people around the world add their names to the petition asking the B.C. government to immediately ban logging in the most at-risk old growth forests, it will force them to pay attention during a moment where they're looking for every possible way to win more votes.

Will you sign the petition to show politicians that the world is watching, and pressure them to protect these irreplaceable old-growth forests from logging?

The fires that continue to rage across the Pacific Northwest, covering our communities in smoke, are a clear reminder that climate change is here now. And these irreplaceable forests are key to addressing this crisis. As we scramble to reach the targets laid out in the Paris Agreement, these trees can not be lost. Yet even as I type this message to you, roads are being built into old-growth rainforests and trees that are hundreds or even thousands of years old are being logged.

There is a solution: the B.C. government could take immediate action and declare an emergency moratorium on the logging of the most endangered old-growth forests. In fact, B.C.’s own independent old-growth panel recently recommended just that. The election is a chance to win this necessary change. During the campaign period, politicians are more attentive to the issues raised by community members as they fight to win votes. With your help, this could be a turning point for the protection of some of the world’s last big trees.

Next week we’ll be delivering this petition to politicians. To prove just how important this issue is, it’s critical we have thousands of signatures from people all over the world.

The last giants are falling in British Columbia. Old growth forests, home to tall, ancient trees, are still being commercially logged. Now, less than 1% of forests in BC are home to stands of large, old trees.

This issue affects communities across Canada. Healthy, old growth forests clean the air, shield us from fire and flooding, and store massive amounts of carbon. Once logged, it takes hundreds of years to recover the majority of that stored carbon. Protecting old growth forests is one of the most effective things we can do to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

BC recently released an independent report confirming the urgent need to ban logging for the most at-risk old growth forests. But instead of taking action, the government has left the majority of these forests on the chopping block.

These ancient forests need our protection.
