The oil and gas industry has pressured the Obama administration for years to alow it to use deadly seismic blast testing to look for oil beneath the ocean. They're close to getting their way.
Tell the Obama administration to protect whales and other marine species from deadly seismic blasts!
The Department of Interior has estimated that the proposed seismic blast testing would injure or kill 138,500 dolphins and whales, including highly endangered North Atlantic right whales. Yet, in the recently released Environmental Impact Study (EIS), the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) concludes that there would be “minor to negligible” impact to most wildlife. Nearly 140,000 dead or injured marine animals and millions more disturbed--this is not what we consider minor or negligible. And this is all just in the hopes that the industry locates oil miles beneath the ocean surface.
Tell BOEM to cancel these plans for dangerous seismic testing today.
Fewer than 500 North Atlantic right whales are alive today and would be exposed to these blasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during their annual migration. Imagine the sound of a jet engine, but 100,000 times more intense. That is what these whales that rely on their hearing for life's most basic functions, such as orientation and communication, would be subject to under this plan.
The Obama administration has extended the time allotted for the public to comment on this plan. Please tell the BOEM that you don't think this potential loss of marine life is "minor to negligible" and ask them to cancel this plan.
Thank you for taking action for wildlife and wild places.
Sincerely,
